We hear that you love soccer! When did you start playing and what position is your favorite? I started playing soccer when I was five on a team called the Bumblebees and I instantly loved it. My favorite position is forward because I like to score goals. What do you love the most about playing soccer? I love being on a team with good friends and I love scoring goals! Winning or losing isn’t as important to me as making sure my teammates are enjoying the game and we are all having fun. Are you currently on a soccer team? If so, which one? Yes! Right now I play for a rec team for LA Galaxy Carlsbad. I’ve been playing for the same coach for the last 4 seasons. I also play for an All Star team for the same league.

Hometown: Encinitas, CA Age: 11 Grade: 6 School: Park Dale Lane Elementary Hobbies: Soccer, Skateboarding, Drawing, Volunteering Favorite food: Japanese food Favorite thing about living in North County: Being able to go to the beach and all the skate parks almost every day!

We also hear that you volunteer regularly with Border Angels and Fill-a-Belly. Tell us about those causes and why you chose to volunteer for them. I volunteer with Border Angels on the first Saturday of the month to bring food and clothing to day laborers at Home Depot and other locations in Encinitas. My sister and I get up early and make sandwiches and we go with our Dad to talk with them and hand them out. We also travel with Border Angels’ volunteers to Tijuana Mexico to bring much needed supplies and food to Haitian refugees waiting in camps there. It is a very humbling experience to visit the children there. I really love helping the people of Mexico.
Fill-a-Belly is a homeless outreach program in Encinitas that happens every Tuesday night in Cottonwood Creek Park. We bring a meal and help serve it to the homeless guests and even sit and eat with them and get to talk with them, too. We also

make them sandwiches and hygiene kits to take with them. I love helping serve the people in my community! Why do you think it is important for not only children but all people to volunteer their time? I think it is really important for kids to serve in their communities because it really makes you feel happy and it makes the other people that you are helping happy. It also makes you grateful for what you have and helps everyone have a better attitude and life. The same goes for adults — everyone should serve each other because we are all the same! Tell us about your other interests. I love to draw landscapes and plants using pencil, charcoal and pen and ink. I also love to color in pen and ink designs like zentangles. I love to read and just finished the Hunger Games series. My favorite book of all time is The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. I also like to go on bike rides with my Dad and I love to skateboard! I try to skate whenever I can! What do you want to be when you grow up? I would love to be a professional soccer player and play for Barcelona but if that doesn’t work out I would like to become an architect or an engineer. Is there anything else you would like to add? Definitely go out and find a way to serve in your community. Once I started volunteering I couldn’t stop because it felt so good to give back and I just wanted to keep doing it. And just because you are a kid doesn’t mean you can’t volunteer! Get up, get outside and get moving! NCK

How has living in North County affected your surfing career? There are lots of different types of waves to surf in North County as well as a really fun skate park. I love the campground at Carlsbad and surfing right out front!

What do you love the most about surfing? Why? I love just being in the water with my family because we are all passionate about the ocean. My brother and dad surf a lot and my mom enjoys swimming and diving for treasures in the ocean.

Who are some local pros and companies that have helped you in your achievements? How? The company that’s helped me since I was really young is Surf Diva. The owners, Izzy and Coco, believe in me and encourage me not to just be a good surfer but to be a positive role model. They take really good care of me!

Have you ever had any shark run-ins? Other sea creatures? I had a really scary run in this summer in Costa Rica. We were visiting an area that I used to live in and it had been raining a lot so the rivers were flowing. I was in about waist deep water when a crocodile swam 10 feet in front of me! His mouth was open and I could see all his teeth and eyes. It was a little longer than my board! I was so scared!

Any advice to other surfers out there looking to improve their skills? Just have fun and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Do your best but don’t take it too seriously.

Where do you see yourself professionally in 5 years? I see myself still surfing and doing fun contests! I really want to do a semester at sea and keep all my options open.

Who is your favorite pro surfer? Carissa Moore is my favorite because I like her power surfing. John John is too because of his crazy airs and he reminds me of my brother. Where is your go-to surf gear shop? Clairemont Surf Shop and Surf Diva because they have everything I need! What’s the biggest wave you’ve ever surfed? Last Spring, we spent some time in Puerto Rico and scored waves! I ended up surfing double overhead Wilderness which was the biggest, most powerful surf I’ve been in so far! Is there anything else you would like to add? I’ve always wanted to be in this magazine! Thank you so much! NCK

THE KELSAY KIDS’ NORTH COUNTY REVIEW OF THE MONTH

The Coolest Pumpkin Patch on Earth: Bates Nut Farm By Aubrey Kelsay (Age 9) and Kirra Kelsay (Age 7), Edited by Mom

We love pumpkins and Halloween. We also like having fun, so when our Mom asked if we wanted to go to Bates Nut Farm we yelled, “YES”! It’s a really cool farm in Valley Center. It takes less than an hour to get there from Encinitas and is worth the drive because in October Bates Nut Farm turns into the most magical place on earth! There are pumpkins everywhere and lots of things to do to have fun all day long. Miss Sherrie Bates Ness runs the farm and is the nicest person ever! It was her great grandfather that bought the farm in 1921. She told us that when she was a kid the farm was full of walnut trees. She remembers being a little girl playing in piles of walnut shells just like we love playing in big piles of Fall leaves. Miss Sherrie gave us a tour of the farm. We got to feed animals, go through the straw maze, try fun flavors of fudge, learn about pumpkin plants, see cool scarecrows, check out the Farmer’s Daughter Boutique, and pick out pumpkins. It was such a fun adventure! When we were driving home, Aubrey decided that her favorite thing to do was try the different flavors of fudge. Kirra really liked running through the straw maze. Our little sister Juliet loved trying to find the biggest pumpkin in the pumpkin patch and our baby brother Chase liked feeding the animals and smashing a stink bug! Bates Nut Farm has so many fun things to do every weekend this month! So make sure you go with your family and check out the face painting, bounce houses, rock climbing wall, pony rides, petting zoo, hayride, and straw maze. But don’t leave without trying the PUMPKIN FUDGE!

Fun Facts about Bates Nut Farm: 1. The biggest pumpkin ever grown on the farm was 246 pounds! 2. The Bates retail store has 22 different kinds of homemade fudge to pick from! 3. Five generations of the Bates family members have helped take care of the farm. 4. There are over 50 animals on the Farm including sheep, goats, miniature donkey, alpaca, a blue butt pig, emu, tortoise, chickens, ducks, geese, and turkey. EVENT SPOTLIGHT

TOYS FOR JOY E very year on a crisp December Saturday morning, thousands of mothers, fathers and children line up at four locations in San Diego in hopes of receiving a free toy. For most of these families, money is tight, and if it weren’t for this event, their children might not be receiving Christmas gifts this year. Toys for Joy is an annual event hosted by the Rock Church that not only provides toys, but also lunches, groceries, clothes, and books. As the event’s tagline says, “It’s more than a toy.” One of the most popular stations of the day, besides the toy room, is the Rock Church’s Inner Beauty Makeover Ministry booth. The ministry provides hundreds of haircuts and manicures at the event to children (and parents) who can’t afford professional haircare. “It is challenging when you’re trying to provide for your child and you just financially can’t, so I think Toys for Joy plays an extremely big part in people’s lives who really need it the most,” said Candice Buckett, leader of the Makeover Ministry. This year the event will be held on Saturday, December 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The four locations are Lincoln High School, El Cajon Valley High School, San Marcos High School, and Southwest High School. The event was founded in 1996 by Pastor Miles McPherson and this year marks the 21st Toys for Joy. Besides running the ministry, Buckett also owns her own salon. During the year, the ministry serves other ministries at the Rock Church by providing beauty services to people in need. They also participate in other major events including a Military Appreciation event and Toys for Joy. “I just feel that we can bless people through our talents,” Buckett said. “What person doesn’t love a fresh cut or a fresh hair do or just being catered to? Especially if they are going through a difficult time?” The ministry also hosts events at her salon such as haircuts for people in homeless shelters. Because she owns the salon, her team of volunteers are able to pray with people and play Christian music while they give haircuts whereas if they went into the shelters, restrictions would prevent them from doing so. Buckett spends the months before Toys for Joy asking for and collecting donations from her connections in the beauty business, but she says the work it takes to pull resources together is “nothing just to bless somebody.” Last year, she said she collected hundreds

16

North County Kids | October 2017

of donated products, including shampoo, makeup, hair color, and lice kits that the volunteers were able to distribute to people in need. She also looks for volunteers to assist with the hundreds of haircuts and manicures that are completed in one day. Last year, it took about 60 people to accomplish 490 haircuts and 1,000 manicures. Though it can be difficult to find volunteers for a Saturday event, she said it always works out and that people from the church and community step up to give of their time and help others. “We most importantly need barbers and hairstylists,” Buckett said, noting that there will be many boys’ haircuts needed, and barbers are excellent at completing those haircuts quickly. Buckett said she enjoys blessing people with her talents. “People cry over what we do. They ask, ‘why would you even do this for me? Why would you even offer up your time?’ It’s just to see the joy on their faces,” she said. Buckett recalled one particular family that consisted of a mother and father and their four young boys who received haircuts at a previous Toys for Joy event. The mother was crying because she said it would have been expensive to get all six haircuts. “I’m a mother myself, and to see how moms wait in line just to get one toy for their child, it means a lot to me to be able to bless the family,” she said. “Kids don’t really worry about their haircuts, but parents definitely want their kids to look good. You’re blessing the parents.” For Buckett, the ability to serve others comes from an overflow of thankfulness for blessings in her own life. “I remember I was pregnant two Toys for Joy ago and they were like, ‘why would you be out here?’ When you’re really blessed and you want to thank God, the only thing you can do is serve others as He would want me to,” she said. Often times in the hair salon industry, we only think of the end result, the beautiful hair style. But with any transformation it requires getting your hands dirty. Their hair might not have been washed for days, not because they don’t want to, but because they don’t have shampoo and conditioner. Jesus washed people’s feet and this is equivalent to that.” Children in San Diego aged 0-11 are welcome to attend Toys for Joy to receive one toy. For more information about the event, to donate toys, or to sign up to volunteer, please visit toys-for-joy.org.

MOM TO MOM BOOK REVIEW

Megan Rath is a wife and mom of an 10 year old daughter and 6 year old son. She is the organizer of the Hip Chicks Book Club (www.meetup.com/hipchicksbookclub), a large group of diverse women of all ages that meets in North County every month. A native of North County all her life, she currently lives in Vista.

13 Little Blue Envelopes by Maureen Johnson Three months after her eccentric, artistic Aunt Peg dies, Ginny receives a little blue envelope from Peg, containing $1,000 and instructions to get a passport and plane tickets to London. Once in London, Ginny receives the next twelve envelopes, each containing instructions on where to go, what to do, and who to meet next, sending Ginny on a whirlwind adventure across Europe, as she lives as Aunt Peg did before she died. Warning: This may be a YA book, but it just might evoke a sense of wanderlust. It was a fun story that kind of made me wish someone would send me on a European scavenger hunt as well. I can’t wait to read the sequel. I give it a B-. If you like this book, try P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern.

Mr. Churchill’s Secretary by Susan Elia MacNeal When Maggie Hope’s grandmother passes away and leaves her the family home in London, Maggie decides not to go back to the U.S. right away, but instead gets a job as Winston Churchill’s secretary (despite being very over qualified, having graduated top of her class, and being accepted into MIT’s doctorate program). But 1940 London comes with its challenges, like the Blitz, and secret Nazi, and IRA, agents. Not to mention the gender inequality. Oh, and a few family secrets as well. This was a fun, quick read, with a little bit of everything: Action, mystery, and even little romance. I definitely enjoyed it, despite it being a bit predictable, and look forward to reading more in the series. I give it a B+. The second book in the Maggie Hope series is Princess Elizabeth’s Spy.

Halloween MadLib The Best Halloween Party Ever!

On a ______________ (kind of weather) Halloween night in the town of _____________ (name of town), _____________(friend’s name #1), ______________(friend’s name #2) and I were going to a Halloween party at ____________’s (a different friend’s name) house. DOWN TO EARTH DAD

HALLOWEEN Y

ears ago you knew it was October because your parents crammed you into the station wagon, gambled on your potential car sickness, and forced you to embark on a twisty drive out to Julian to look at fall foliage and consume

apple pie. Sadly, brown leaves and pastries are no longer required to symbolize the autumn transformation. Today the shift from September to October is distinctively marked by the annual makeover of the once-prosperousbut-now-empty-retail-space into a Halloween Superstore, packed with voluptuous nurse costumes. The recent emergence of the Halloween Superstore can’t be good for the American economy. Where we once had brick and mortar stores that sold books and appliances we now have retail space that lingers vacantly for eleven months, only to awaken every October to hawk faux lime-green bathing suits that will magically transform you into Borat for one ghoulish night (please don’t do this). Now, I’m no Paul Krugman, but I think the

30

North County Kids | October 2017

prosperity of the Halloween Superstore might be a negative indicator of economic recovery. However, my real problem with the Halloween Superstore isn’t the perceived economic significance—I struggle with them because they are the fast food drive-thru equivalent of Halloween costumes, and I believe in making your meal at home from scratch. So what am I going to be for Halloween this year? Well, I am going emaciate myself, shave my head, grow a goatee, order a pork-pie hat and sunglasses on Ebay, make a batch of raspberry rock candy, and go as Heisenberg from Breaking Bad. Unless I don’t have time, then I’m just going to drive over to the convenient Halloween Superstore and buy a yellow hazmat suit like everybody else. NCK The Down-To-Earth-Dad is a lawyer by day and youth soccer coach by night. He lives in Carlsbad with his wife and two kids.
