Jamboree On The Internet is designed to allow Scouts and Guides to make contacts around the world without the expense of taking part in an International Jamboree. Taking place on the third weekend in October every year, JOTI is now an established event on the Scouting calendar.
Once you are on the ScoutLink network, you can type "/list" to see all the channels, or chat rooms, that are open. These are usually named after the language that is spoken on that channel (so, to chat in English, you will want one of the #english channels). Simply double click on the name of the channel you want to join, then you will be connected and can start chatting. Although ScoutLink aims to be as safe as it can, please remember the basic rules of safe internet usage, especially when your youth members are taking part in JOTI.
The best way to take part in JOTI is to use Internet Chat (IRC) through the dedicated Scouting and Guiding network, Scoutlink (http://www.scoutlink.net). This network is set up to be as safe and secure online network as is possible, being constantly monitored by a large number of Leaders and other Scouting/Guiding volunteers from around the world.
Do not allow Young People to exchange phone numbers or home addresses with other JOTI users. If you wish to exchange badges through JOTI, then use a Group or PO box address for such exchanges. Remember that if methods to contact each other off ScoutLink are exchanged, then future contact will be moved away from the safety of the ScoutLink Network.
To take part in JOTI, you will need to connect to the ScoutLink network. This can be done in several ways:

Using a dedicated IRC client, such as mIRC for Windows. Once configured, this will give the most user-friendly way to connect and chat. Using the java chat on ScoutLink at http:// irc.scoutlink.net. Using this you will be able to connect and chat, without having to download and install your own software. If you try the two options above, but can't connect because of a firewall, then you

Congratulations and welcome back to Derwent and Dove Units after their exciting trip to the World Jamboree where they were excellent ambassadors for Derbyshire Scouting. A special thanks must go to the Unit Leaders: Gill, James, Steve, Matt, Gavin and Graham. We mustn’t forget those Leaders from Derbyshire who attended the Jamboree as members of the IST (international Service Team) who I am sure will share their tales of toilet cleaning to running activities.
We also welcome back the following groups from their travels overseas: 1st Melbourne & 1st Bakewell who both attended the Haarlem Jamborette in Holland, East Scarsdale Explorers who visited France, 1st Calow who went all the way to Canada, 1st Holymoorside who travelled to both Norway & Sweden and the County Network who had an actionpacked time at Kandersteg, Switzerland. Again great thanks to all the Leaders who gave up their time to enable such tremendous opportunities for our young people. Where will your Group go next year? Don’t forget our tremendous opportunities for an International experience next year courtesy of the Peak International Fund. There will be a subsidy for a Scout representative from each District to attend the Essex International Jamboree and an Explorer representative from each District to attend Jamboree Denmark. These representatives need to be chosen by 31st October so check with your DC, ADC (Scouts) or DESC to see how they are organising the selection process. We need Leaders to go as well, so if you are interested please get in touch (accinternational@derbyshirescouts.org) and request an application form which will need to be returned by 31st October. These places are also subsidised. The Summer holidays are a great time for. Remember it was to see where our County Badge or your Group Mascot could get to this year. Looking for programme ideas this term then what about Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) or Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) which will take place over the weekend of 15-16 October? The JOTA and JOTI are real jamborees during which Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are shared. They happen over the same weekend in October every year and are worldwide events. During the weekend, sections normally participate for 48hrs or part thereof. In 2010, one million Scouts took part in the JOTA/JOTI weekend. The vision is to
increase this to three million by 2015. Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) The Jamboree on the Air is an annual event in which half-a-million Scouts and Guides all over the world make contact with each other by means of amateur radio. Short-wave radio signals carry their voices to virtually any corner of the world. The use of amateur radio means that many Scouts grasp the opportunity to discover the skills of wireless radio techniques and electronics, while JOTA is also the only event that offers each individual Scout the opportunity to speak to other Scouts across the world. Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) Jamboree on the Internet connects Scouts across the world in a similar way to JOTA, but through the means of internet. Volunteer organisations like Scoutlink and Scoutnet provide the necessary technical support and server capacity. Don’t forget that you can still use ideas from your “Join-In-Jamboree” booklet but also look out for your next lot of programme support materials based on the Olympic Games, “Our Sporting Adventure”, which will be sent out with your next issue of Scouting magazine. Finally I went across to Sherbrooke Campsite in Nottinghamshire at the end of July to join with other Leaders and Ex-
plorer Scouts to sort books for the German Scout charity Bookbridge (www.bookbridge.org) which had been collected by Scout Groups across this country. Many thanks to those of you who were part of this. These are a few of the statistics: 28 Collection Centres (Scout groups) throughout the UK collected the books 30, 000 – the amount of books they aimed to collect 90, 000 – the estimated amount of books actually collected 75, 000 – books collected in the UK 15, 000 – books collected in Germany 15, 000 – the amount of books sorted into categories and sent to Siam Reap, Cambodia 15, 000 – the amount of books sorted into categories and sent to Takeo, Cambodia 25, 000 – approx. amount of books unsuitable for Bookbridge which have been donated to Oxfam 35, 000 – approx. number of books still in a container waiting to be sorted and used by Bookbridge
