Heart Health
WebMD reported a study, Women Get Worse Care for Heart Attack from the September 29, 2020 issue of HealthDay News. The study was published in the journal Circulation: Heart Failure. The key points of the study were: • Young women who suffer a condition called cardiogenic shock after a heart attack are 11% more likely to die from it than men. • Women aged 18-55 are less likely to receive the tests and aggressive treatment than men. • Lead researcher, Dr. Saraschandra Vallabhajosyula, a clinical fellow in interventional cardiology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta stated: “Very difficult to understand exactly what is causing this but a lot is related to unconscious or conscious bias when it comes to women and acute cardiac conditions.” • Women don’t always have the same symptoms as men and heart attacks are missed in women. • Women are also more likely to dismiss their symptoms and wait longer before going to the hospital. • Women have to be their own advocates and take their bodies’ signals very seriously. • This study included data on more than 90,600 U.S, men and women who had heart attacks complicated by cardiogenic shock. You can find this article and more health information at www.WebMD. com. Men

Valentine Scavenger Hunt around the World – can you guess the country? Record your answers on page 15
1. Valentine’s Day is a relatively new holiday in this country (celebrated since the early 1990s), the country has embraced February 14th with its own twist. Rather than roses, friends and sweethearts exchange pressed white flowers called snowdrops. On February 14th, men also give women gaekkebrev, a “joking letter” consisting of a funny poem or rhyme written on intricately cut paper and signed only with anonymous dots. If a woman who receives the gaekkebrev can correctly guess the sender, she earns herself an Easter egg later that year.

2. It’s been said that the first Valentine’s Day card originated in this country, when Charles, Duke of Orleans, sent love letters to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415. 3. Valentine’s Day is a popular holiday for young couples in this country; variations of the holiday are celebrated monthly from February through April. The gift-giving starts on February 14th when women treat their men with chocolates, candies and flowers. Then on March 14th, a holiday known as White Day, men shower their sweethearts with chocolates, flowers, and a gift. For those who don’t have much to celebrate on either Valentine’s Day or White Day, there is a third holiday: Black Day. On April 14th, it’s customary for singles to mourn their solitary status by eating dark bowls of jajangmyeon, or black bean-paste noodles. 4. You won’t find the people of this country celebrating Saint Valentine -- instead, they celebrate Saint Dwynwen, the country’s patron saint of lovers, on January 25th. 5. On the eve on Valentine’s Day, women in this country used to place five bay leaves on their pillows -- one at each corner and one in the center -- to bring dreams of their future husbands. In the county of Norfolk, Jack Valentine acts as a Santa of sorts for Valentine’s Day. Children anxiously wait to hear Jack Valentine knock at their doors, and although they don’t catch a glimpse of Old Father Valentine, children enjoy the candies and small gifts left on their porches. 6. With a large national celebration held sometime in February or March each year, residents of this country skip the February 14th celebration and instead celebrate Dia dos Namorados, or “Lovers’ Day,” on June 12th. In addition to the usual exchanges of chocolates, flowers and cards, music festivals and performances are held throughout the country. Gift giving isn’t limited to couples; people celebrate this day of love by exchanging gifts and sharing dinner with friends and relatives, too. The following day is Saint Anthony’s Day, which honors the patron saint of marriage. On this day, single women perform rituals called simpatias in hopes that St. Anthony will bring them a husband.

Cognitive super agers defy typical age-related decline in brainpower
Studies show that some people remain cognitively sharp into their 80s, 90s and beyond so even though it’s normal for brainpower to decline as we age, it is not inevitable. National Institute on Aging supported researchers are exploring the cognitive super agers and the factors that set them apart.

Easy Valentine’s Day Jar Candle Holder
Directions:

Step 1: Use a small piece of tape to secure the doily to the front of the vase.

Step 2: Wrap the twine around the jar several times, ending by tying a bow in front of the doily. Supplies: • Fat Glass Vase or Decorative Jar • White Heart Doily • Clear Tape (2 sided works great!) • Pink or Red Bakers Twine • Approximately 1/2 pound of dried Lima Beans (or whatever type you have on hand) • Glass Votive Candle
Step 3: Add lima beans to fill the bottom 2 inches of the vase. Step 4: Add the votive candle on top of the lima beans, pressing down to nest it in the beans a bit.
Decorating doesn’t have to be expensive. As I get older, I have also realized that subtle decorations in a room are much more appealing than the over the top, overly elaborate trimmings that I once felt necessary. So gather you some lima beans, a doily, baker’s twine and five minutes of your time and create an attractive pretty candle holder! Here’s how to make it:

One day I received a B minus on a theme paper. In hopes of bettering my grade and in the spirit of the valentine season, I sent her an extravagant heart-shaped box of chocolates with the pre-printed inscription: “BE MINE.” The following day, I received in return a valentine from the teacher. It read: “Thank you, but it’s still BE MINE-US.” 8. I met my husband while I was working in a science library. He came in every week to read the latest journals and eventually decided to take out the librarian instead of the books. After a year and a half of dating, he showed up at the library and started rummaging through my desk. I asked what he was looking for, but he didn’t answer. Finally he unearthed one of the rubber stamps I used to identify reference books. “Since I couldn’t find the right engagement ring,” he said, “this will have to do,” and he firmly stamped my hand. Across my knuckles, in capital letters, it read “NOT FOR CIRCULATION.

Chocolate dipped pretzels for Valentine’s Day Ingredients: • 6 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate • 1 to 1 /2 tbsp shortening • 5 dozen pretzel rods or large pretzel twists • Assorted sprinkles, small candies or chopped nuts (optional) • 8oz white chocolate chip (optional) Directions: 1. Prepare a couple of baking sheets by lining them with aluminum foil, parchment paper, or wax paper. 2. Combine the chocolate chips or chopped chocolate and the shortening in a large microwave-safe bowl, and microwave until the chocolate is melted, stirring after every 30 seconds (for 16 oz of chocolate, it takes about 1 minute and a half in total). When chocolate gets overheated it thickens and becomes unworkable, so watch your chocolate carefully! Take it out of the microwave when there are still unmelted chips remaining, and stir until the final chips melt. Alternatively, you can put the bowl with chocolate chips on top of a simmering pot of water and stir the chocolate until it meltsthis way your chances of seizing the chocolate are not as high as if using the microwave (at least from personal experience), you just have to be careful not to get burned by the steam of the simmering water. Make sure the burner is set on LOW- you want a low simmer, not a boil. 3. If dipping pretzel rods, hold a rod by one end and dip in the chocolate, leaving an inch or two uncovered. Tap off the excess chocolate until the pretzel looks nice and smooth. If you are dipping pretzel twists, drop the whole pretzel in the chocolate and submerge it slightly. Use a fork to pull the pretzel out of the chocolate. Shake the chocolate-dipped pretzels several times to remove excess chocolate, and place it on the prepared baking sheet. If you are using sprinkles or small candies, sprinkle them on when the chocolate is still wet. Repeat with remaining chocolate and pretzels. 4. Place the pretzels in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to set the chocolate (or just leave out for a couple of hours or overnight). 5. If desired, melt the white chocolate and drizzle it over the pretzels for a decorative look, or do the reverse, for fun). Leave to set. You can purchase pretzel bags in the baking section of most stores. You could also wrap them in Saran wrap and tie off both ends. These are great for sharing.

February Holidays February 2: Groundhog Day Groundhog Day is celebrated in the U.S. each year on February 2. On this day the groundhog awakens from a long winter’s nap, and goes outside of his den to see if he sees his shadow. According to legend, if the groundhog sees his shadow (a sunny morning), there will be six more weeks of winter. He then returns to his den and goes back to sleep. If however, he does not see his shadow (cloudy days), he plays around outside of his hole for a while. If he does not see his shadow, spring is just around the corner. Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is the site of the annual Groundhog event. Punxsutawney Phil, the resident groundhog, has been making this annual winter prediction since 1887. The comedy film Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell debuted in 1993 and has become a classic.
