JCSC Center News Spring is just around the corner. As we see flowering buds starting to pop out and bring a new freshness and brightness to our area, may you also see the light at the end of the tunnel of this pandemic. As our number of cases are starting to decline and more folks getting the vaccine we also can see a brighter spring and getting closer to being able to reopen the center. At the printing of this newsletter I cannot give you a set date but we are getting closer. Continue to be safe. The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation has been busy working on their Spring Forward for Seniors project which will provide groceries and household goods to 200 low income seniors. March 1-7, 2021, the Foundation is asking you to consider giving a donation to this project. Your donations can be made by going online to JC Parks Online. This will take to the Parks and Recreation site where you can make a donation. Click on the donation tab and it will ask you to set up an account to make your donation for this project. Or you can send your donations to Johnson City Senior Center, 510 Bert Street, Johnson City, TN 37601. Thank you!

Congregate Meal Drive-Thru Service:

The Johnson City Senior Center is currently closed. Congregate meals continue to be served as a drive thru service only. The food shall be served cold. Your meal will have reheating instructions on the packaging. Reordering process and pick up procedures will remain the same. If you ordered a meal, the pick-up times are from 11:30a-12:00p each day Monday through Friday. Please contact us if you are unable to pick up your reserved meal (423-434-6226 or 423-434-5723)

March Travel Special Events.pdf - updated 03-01-2021 It’s March – spring is almost here! It’s been a year since we last traveled together, but there are memories of past travels that bring a big smile.

One of the favorite trips with JCSC Seniors on the Go happened in March 2017. Do you remember the destination? Here’s a few hints: • Beignets • Riverboats • WWII Museum • Jackson Square Yes, it’s New Orleans! Here’s some fun facts about this favorite tourist destination: The First Opera Was Performed Here. The first opera in the United States of America was performed in the 1790s in New Orleans—a production of Ernest Grétry’s Silvain. The City is Famous for the Beignets. The beignets are New Orleans' signature sweet, and they are made from deep fried dough sprinkled with sugar. The Tombs Are above Ground. One interesting fact about New Orleans is that the tombs are located above the ground in cemeteries, given the high water table in the area. The Battle of New Orleans, which took place between December 24, 1814 and January 8, 1815, was the last major battle of the War of 1812. It took place after the treaty was officially signed, but word hadn’t reached the soldiers. The Superdome—where those Saints play—is the largest fixed domed structure in the world. Each seat inside is a different color than the one next to it, creating the illusion that the dome is fuller than it is.

Evaluate your sleep patterns and see if you need to make any changes to improve your sleep. Here are some simple steps to renew healthy sleeping habits this spring: • Eliminate light in the bedroom • Avoid blue screens one hour before bedtime • Exercise daily • Don’t eat before bedtime • Commit to a relaxing pre-sleep ritual

Spring is a great time for a Fresh Start! Spring cleaning needn’t be just around the house. It’s also a great idea to pay attention to any neglected areas in our lives. Maybe your diet could use some cleaning up or maybe you’ve been staying inside all winter and it’s time to get outside. Tips for “cleaning” up our routine:

LET NATURE NURTURE

As the weather warms up, get outside and enjoy some fresh air and a little sunshine. Take a walk outside, go for a picnic or visit a local park. Enjoy the flowers as they start blooming and listen to the birds. Contact with nature nurtures us in ways nothing else can. Even just imagining a vivid sunset or the sound of a stream can bring a sense of calm or rekindle memories. If you find it difficult to spend time outdoors, then consider bringing the outdoors inside. Freshen up your home with spring plants or flowers. Houseplants can brighten up our spaces, are natural air purifiers and can raise the humidity of the air around you. If you are able to go outside, take a trash bag and wear gloves so you can pick up some trash along the way. You get the benefit of added exercise and a more beautiful world!

REFRESH YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE

If you are in a rut or if you haven’t been moving much at all over the winter, spring is a great time to switch up your exercise routine or start a new one. Get outside for a walk, try a new route. Do an online class. Ask someone to be a workout buddy and be accountable to each other. Add some stretching and strength training. Start where you are and do what you can. Set achievable goals and remind yourself why you want to improve your fitness. Maybe you want to take a trip, be fit enough to keep up with the grandkids or be able to stay active and enjoy the things you love.

DE-CLUTTER YOUR DIET

A good way to get started with healthier eating is to clear out the junk. If it’s not there, you won’t eat it. So start getting rid of or not buying more of the junk food in your pantry and fridge. Let those treats be an every now and then food instead of an everyday food. Clear out food that has expired dates. This can surprise you! Stock up on your favorite fruits, veggies, nuts, whole grains and other healthy foods. Little changes can have big results. You don’t have to change everything at once. Start small, one meal at a time. You’ll be glad you did.

RESTOCK YOUR SPICE RACK

Not only will herbs and spices add flavor to your food, they also benefit your health and help you eat less salt. Throw out old or expired spices and restock with fresh ones. Buy spices in smaller quantities to keep them fresh and to avoid throwing them out next year. Fresh spices are more prevalent this time of the year. Spring is also a good time to plant some herbs.

RETHINK YOUR DRINK

Water makes up about 50% to 70% of your body weight. Every cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water to work properly. For example, water: • Gets rid of wastes through urination, perspiration and bowel movements • Keeps your temperature normal • Lubricates and cushions joints • Protects sensitive tissues We can get fluid from other sources like unsweetened tea or coffee, but most of your intake should be from water. The excess sugar and chemicals in soft drinks, energy drinks and other sweetened beverages can lead to obesity, diabetes and other health issues. If you find water boring, add some fruit slices, cucumber, or mint for flavor. How do you know if you are drinking enough? Your fluid intake is probably adequate if your urine is colorless or light yellow.

TAKE A TECHNOLOGY “DETOX”

Although technology can made life easier, too much technology can make life more difficult and leave us feeling stressed out. Consider a technology detox that cuts back on too much stimulation. Even taking a break from the news can help with our stress.

LESS STRESS

Along with sleep, stress can affect our health in big ways. Stress can result in multiple unhealthy behaviors and moods – such as overeating (especially junk food), skipping meals, smoking, self-medicating with alcohol, wakefulness at night, irritability and depression. • Just Breathe – take time each day to do some slow, deep breathing exercises. • Give yoga a try.

• Listen to relaxing music • Try a new craft or hobby • Try Journaling • Talk to a friend or counselor

They’re packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber but low in calories. Nutrition and brain health - taken from Cleveland Clinic Healthy Brains Since March is National Nutrition month, let’s look at how nutrition can play a part in brain health. In this article it states that research shows a diet rich in fish, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, olives and nuts helps maintain brain health and may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. This diet is known as the Mediterranean-style diet. This type of eating is similar to the cuisine of countries along the Mediterranean Sea. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown the Mediterranean diet to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death related to heart problems by 30%.

BIRDSEED ORNAMENTS

These easy DIY Birdseed Ornaments attract a wide variety of wild birds and only need 3 ingredients. PREP TIME ACTIVE TIME TOTAL TIME DIFFICULTY TOOLS • Scissors • Spoon

MATERIALS • Unflavored gelatin, 2 packets • Boiling water, 1/2 cup • Hemp twine • Cookie cutters • Birdseed, 2 cups • Cookie sheet • Parchment paper

1. Empty 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin into a bowl. 2. Pour 1/2 cup of boiling water into the bowl. 3. Stir the mixture with a spoon until the gelatin has dissolved. 4. Pour two cups of birdseed into the bowl. Stir the mixture until the birdseed is well-coated. 5. Place a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet, then arrange 3–4 cookie cutters on top of the parchment. 6. Use a small spoon to scoop the birdseed mixture into the cookie cutters until they are half full. 7. Place a loop of untreated hemp twine in the middle of each cookie cutter. Fill the cookie cutter the rest of the way with the birdseed mixture. 8. The parchment will prevent the mixture from sticking to your hands. 9. Allow the gelatin birdseed ornaments to set and dry for about 24 hours. 10. When the birdseed is set, gently pop the ornaments out of the cookie cutters, then hang outside! NOTES It is recommended to only offer gelatin feeders when the temperatures are 50˚ or below. If the temperatures are higher, the gelatin will melt.

Container Gardening March is a great time to think about Container Gardening! Here’s some ideas to get you started on your own container garden: Crops to Sow in March: • Chard • Chilies • Chives • Kale • Peas • Potatoes • Sweet Peppers Choose your Container: Select as large a container as possible. Plants with deep root systems will need a deep container. Think about weight – it will be heavy once it’s filled. If you plan to move the container around on a patio or porch to take advantage of sunlight, you may want to use a small caddy with wheels to hold your container. Where to place your Container: Most vegetables need at least six hours of sunlight each day. A windbreak of some sort will help protect the plants. Positioning the containers in clusters will allow larger plants to help shield smaller plants. Watering Vegetables require a consistent supply of water. A self-watering planter that is filled every few days is an easy way to make sure your plants absorb moisture when they need it. Fertilizing There’s a lot going on in a small space. Generally it is recommended that you mix an organic fertilizer into the soil when planting and then feed the plant weekly with a water-soluble fertilizer. The Best Vegetables for Containers Potatoes, chard, lettuce, cherry and bush tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, summer squash, Asian greens, pole beans, as well as a variety of herbs to season all those delicious meals you’ll prepare from your garden. Here are the minimum soil depths for healthy growth. FREE TAX ASSISTANCE

Volunteers working through AARP-VITA will prepare your Federal and Tennessee taxes for free beginning Monday, February 1, 2021. Acceptance of tax documents will be by appointment only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each Monday and Thursday until April 8. Due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, taxpayers documents will be scanned by an AARP-VITA volunteer, then the taxes will be prepared off site by other volunteers. The taxpayer will receive a second appointment to return and receive their completed tax return. If the return is for a married couple, both spouses must be present for both appointments.

Virtual Creative Card Making Instructor: Chyrl McLaughlin Cost: $7 Running low on greeting cards? Last month’s kits went quick! Participate in our virtual card making event. Drive through and pick up your packet of six card kits. This month we will be making an assortment of birthday and multi-occasion cards! These are cards that have not been made in previous classes. All supplies will be in the kit with the exception of a basic adhesive. You could use a tape runner or a glue stick. Pictures will be provided of each card for assembly purposes. The cutting, embossing and stamping have been done for you. Packets will not be sold or reserved prior to March 1. Don’t delay, kits are limited in number. Please call 423-434-6237 or 423-434-6226 to reserve your set! Drive through time will be set at time of reservation and money will be collected at time of pick up. Energy Bites Video Instructor: Chyrl McLaughlin Cost: Free Join Chyrl as she prepares some quick and easy energy bites. These yummy snacks will give you the right amount of energy to jumpstart your day or as an afternoon pick me up. The video can be accessed on the Johnson City Seniors’ Centers Facebook page early March.

All volunteers are trained using IRS and AARP-VITA standards and must pass an IRS test. They can prepare all individual and joint tax returns, with a few exceptions for certain complicated returns. There are no age or income limitations for this free service. For appointments, please email jctax2020@gmail.com starting January 4, 2021. You must bring your Social Security card and the Social Security cards of all dependents on the return, photo identification for all individuals, and all tax documents such as W-2s, 1099-Rs, SSA-1099s, 1099-Bs, one broker statement (due to the need to scan documents, we are only accepting returns that have a single broker statement), 1099-INTs and 1099-DIVs, as well as your filed 2019 tax return. If you purchased health insurance through the Marketplace, you must also bring your form 1095-A, which you will receive from the federal government. Until you have received all needed forms, the volunteers will be unable to complete your returns. All returns are e-filed, meaning refunds are generally issued with 10 days.

Inclement Weather Policy: When Johnson City Schools are closed due to inclement weather, Memorial Park Community Center will open at 10:00am with access to the following areas of the facility: fitness room, gymnasium, billiards and pool (lap swim/open swim/therapy only). Scheduled events and instructor led programs will be canceled. The center will close at 5:00pm.

When Johnson City Schools are on a delayed schedule due to inclement weather, Memorial Park Community Center will open at 10:00am and all events and programs will being at 10:00am. Center will close at normal house, unless inclement weather occurs later in the day that forces closure. When Johnson City Schools let out early due to inclement weather all programs and events scheduled for the remainder of the day will be canceled and the center will close at 5:00pm. If inclement weather occurs on a weekend when schools are not in session, the Parks and Recreation Department director will determine when parks and centers would open.
