JCSC Foundation News
The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation has successfully completed their 2nd annual pickleball tournament Dink or Treat with 72 players. Friday allowed players the opportunity to play with different partners and lots of playing time in the round robin event. Saturday consisted of men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The Foundation would like to thank all those who played in the tournament and our sponsors: ETSU Health, Watauga Orthopedics, Hennessee Tax and Bookkeeping, Olive Garden, Wheeler’s Bagels and Pickleball Central, Chik-fil-a Johnson City and Little Caesar’s Pizza. The Foundation has decided to change the date and name of their Christmas Box project to Spring into Giving for Seniors with boxes being delivered March 30 – April 4, 2020 for seniors in need. Please be on the watch for more information and how you might be able to participate.

Congregate Meals will be served from 12:00-12:15 for those who have registered. At 12:15 continuing until 12:25 if there is food available, it will be served to those who did not register but have shown up to eat lunch. Please register in advance to ensure your meal!

Hiking 101* Persimmon Ridge Trail, Jonesborough (Ages 50+) Cost: $1.00 Tuesday, November 5, 9:30a The trail consists of a 2.8 mile loop that crosses several ridge lines and includes views of Little Limestone Creek. Come see the fall colors. The trail is rated as Easy with some elevation gain. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 1:00p.
Hiking 101 on South Holston Lake
Hip Hikers* AT/Shook Branch to Watauga Dam, Carter County, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $2.00 Thursday, November 7, 7:30a Hike the AT from Shook Branch to Watauga Dam. The trail follows the lake edge while slowly climbing to the Watauga Dam. The views from the dam are great. The trail is rated as intermediate and is a total of 5.5 miles out and back. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 2:00p. AT/ Chestoa to Curley Maple Shelter, Unicoi, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $2 Thursday, November 14, 7:30a Start at Chestoa picnic area and follow the Nolichucky River as we climb to Curley Maple Shelter on the Appalachian Trail. This is a Challenging hike of 8 miles with elevation gain and will be the last hike of the season. So come on out and enjoy the cool weather and view of the river. We will break for lunch at the shelter. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 3:00p. Preparation is the key to success! Remember to use your Hiking Checklist to pack for each trip. If you do not have a checklist, please contact the front desk to receive one.

AARP Drivers Safety Class (Ages 50+) Instructor: Diane Bolger Cost: $15 for AARP members, $20 for nonmembers to be paid to the Instructor on the day of the class 2 day class on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 12 and 13, 9a-1p Some of the topics the class will cover: •How to minimize the effects of dangerous blind spots •How to maintain the proper following distance behind another car •The safest ways to change lanes and make turns at busy intersections •Proper use of safety belts, air bags, antilock brakes and new technology found in cars today •Ways to monitor your own and others’ driving skills and capabilities •The effects of medications on driving (Source: AARP) and more. Please pre-register. Medicare Open Enrollment Event Medicare’s Part D Annual Enrollment Period is October 15 – December 7. This is the period each year when Medicare beneficiaries can join, switch or drop their Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage coverage. Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans change their coverage and costs each year, so it is important to review your plan and compare it to others on the market every fall. This year, the Johnson City Senior Center is partnering with the Tennessee State Health Insurance Assistance Program (TN SHIP) and ETSU’s College of Public Health to provide free and objective assistance in comparing Part D and Medicare Advantage plans. Trained Medicare counselors will be on hand on October 18th from 9am-12pm and November 8th from 9am-12pm to assist Medicare beneficiaries and their families in comparing Part D or Medicare Advantage plans for 2020. Appointments are preferred for these events. For more information and to set up
an appointment please call (423) 722-5205. Tennessee SHIP is a free program designed to help people in Tennessee with Medicare. Counselors are specially trained to answer questions and provide objective, easy-tounderstand information about Medicare. SHIP receives grant funding from the Administration for Community Living, Department of Health and Human Services, to provide direct, local assistance to Medicare beneficiaries through one-on-one, counseling sessions (both in-person and over the phone), presentations, and public education programs.

Whether your choice is swimming laps, aqua jogging, or just doing your ow thing, we have a time slot to fit your needs.
Adult Only Open Therapy (Adults & Seniors) M-W-F 7a-8:45p; T-Th 7a-11a, 12:45p-4p, 6p-8:45p; Sat 9-4:30p Cost: $2 per visit or $25 per month (Free to Silver Sneaker® participants) An adult only time for therapy that you can engage in activities of your choice to fit your therapeutic needs. This pool is for low impact swimming. You will not be allowed to jump, splash or make big waves. Exception: Private swim lessons conducted by City of Johnson City contract employees.
Water Aerobics (Teens, Adults and Seniors) Instructor: Heidi Perry M-W-F 9-10a Cost: $3 per session or $25 per month Enjoy a shallow water class which combines cardiovascular work, muscle toning, balance and core work in a fun environment. No swimming skills are needed and all equipment is provided. Power Walking (Adults and Seniors) Instructor: Heidi Perry M-W-F 10-11a Cost: $3 per session or $25 per month This shallow water locomotion class is perfect for those who need a workout but require a low impact program. All equipment is provided. Aqua Mix Aerobics (Teens, Adults and Seniors) Instructor: Kim McCleod T &Th 9:15a-10:15a Cost: $3 per session or $25 per month Looking for a challenging workout? This class will be located in the shallow in. The focus is on toning, cardiovascular strength, endurance and core work. No swimming skills are needed. Cardio Waves (Teens, Adults and Seniors) Instructor: Heidi Perry M-W-F 6-7p Cost: $3 per session or $25 per month This is a high intensity water aerobics program geared towards individuals who are looking to push their limits! All equipment is provided. Silver Sneakers® Classic (Ages 50+) Mondays and Wednesdays, 10a Cost: $3 (Free for Silver Sneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Lauren Qualls Increase muscular strength, range of movement and practice activities for daily living. Silver Sneakers® Circuit (Ages 50+) Fridays, 10a Cost: $3 (Free for Silver Sneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Lauren Qualls This class is designed to increase cardiovascular endurance and improve strength. This is a low impact class which offers upper body strengthening. Participant should possess consistent skills in agility, coordination and balance. Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention (Ages 18+) Mondays and Wednesdays, 11a Cost will be $5 per class (50% discount for SilverSneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Tai Chi for Arthritis is an evidence-based, low-impact Tai Chi form modified for seniors. It has been shown to reduce pain and stiffness associated with arthritis while improving strength, range of motion, and balance thereby reducing the risk of falling. Classwork includes gentle stretching, breath work, focus on body alignment, and slow, controlled movement. With adjustments the exercises are appropriate for individuals of all physical conditions and can be done seated in a chair. Qigong (Ages 18+) Mondays and Wednesdays, 12p Cost will be $5 per class (50% discount for SilverSneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Qigong is a part of traditional Chinese medicine that includes easy to learn, gentle, flowing movements that stimulate the meridian system of the body and promote relation and mindfulness. Class work also includes warmups, gentle stretching of all the major joints, and breath work. Evidence-based studies show that Qigong practice can improve a wide variety of chronic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, while reducing stress and promoting emotional health and mental function. With adaptations this class is appropriate for everyone regardless of physical limitations and can be done seated in a chair. All Out Fitness (Ages 18+) Tuesdays, 8:30a Cost: $2 Instructor: Lauren Qualls Blast your cardio fitness level through the roof with the best of any type of cardio training the instructor feels like throwing at you! You will challenge your aerobic threshold every time so come prepared to get your cardio on!

Pilates (Ages 18+) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:45a Cost: $2 Instructor: Lauren Qualls Pilates is an exercise system of movements that uses the mind and the body to enhance muscular strength, improve flexibility and overall health and wellness. Pilates movements requires control of your own body to properly execute precise repetitions during exercise. All movements will be performed on exercise mats so participants are encouraged to bring their own mat to each class.

There will be mostly floor work and encouragement of those who are stiff and suffering from winter cold. This will be a breath of fresh air as we explore the world of yoga postures, breathing practices, and relaxation techniques. This is a safe environment to empower, educate and inspire you to live healthier and happier lives. This class will offer a daily workout that participants will work through at their own pace. Modifications will be offered for a variety of fitness levels. Workouts will include weighted exercises, varied functional movements, and cardio intervals. Werq (Ages 18+) Tuesdays 6:30p Thursdays, 8:30a Saturdays 10:30a Cost: $5 Instructor: Jennifer Howard Werq is a hip-hop based dance fitness class that is sure to get you moving! Bingocize (Ages 50+) Tuesdays & Thursdays 11a-12p Cost: Free Bingocize® is a successful preventative health promotion program designed to increase the physical fitness, health knowledge, and social engagement of senior adults. Bingocize® has proved to be an effective, enjoyable, and easily replicated way to improve physical activity adherence and ultimately health- related quality of life. Bingocize® combines a bingo-like game with exercise and health education. Come out and enjoy the fun. Keep It Moving A supervised exercise program for individuals who have finished Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy or been told by your physician that you need to exercise but don’t know how. This program serves as the next step in your progression in establishing a safe, independent exercise program. This program requires a referral from a medical professional. This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing post-surgical physical therapy.
