JCSC Foundation News
At the printing of this newsletter, the Johnson City Senior Center remains closed following the Executive order from Governor Bill Lee. The August edition of Senior Lifestyles includes our Year End Review highlighting accomplishments, events and data from the past fiscal year since we are not able to have an actual Year End Review dinner and presentation as we normally do. August is also National Wellness month so we will be highlighting the six dimensions of wellness in this edition.
Congregate meal service is currently being served as a drive- thru.
So thankful that the Johnson City Senior Center @ Memorial Park Community Center building has a great drive thru area that is working great for us! Calls are being made on Tuesdays and Wednesdays taking meal orders from those individuals who have paperwork on file with FTHRA for the following week. If you ordered a meal, the pick-up times are from 11:30a-12:00p each day Monday through Friday.

Goals and Accomplishments
1. Achieve reaccreditation through National Council on Aging/National Institute of Senior Centers. - We are on hold with our reaccreditation due to COVID 19 and the center being closed. Our notebooks have been reviewed and we are waiting for our onsite reviewer to schedule a visit or do a virtual visit once we reopen. 2. Provide opportunity for assisted living participants to experience the Johnson City Senior Center by offering transportation and targeted programs during National Assisted Living Week. We offered an afternoon ballroom dance with Curt Mathson for Assisted Living participants. 3. Develop a Johnson City Senior Center information/new member packet to be given to retiring employees from the City of Johnson City and other Johnson City businesses. - This packet has been developed and we will start distributing once the center reopens. 4. Offer Bingo-cize® program monthly starting in November. This program is being offered twice a week and was averaging 10-15 participants per session. What About Funeral Services During These Times? Yes, funeral service attendance is now limited. No, that does not mean you cannot hold a service. Morris-Baker is an expert at webcasting funerals. We’ve offered this capability for years for family overseas and relatives/friends who could not attend, etc. Fortunately, we can use this same technology to allow anyone in the world to view a funeral service from afar during the COVID-19 outbreak. Call us for more information.

Trips & Outings
It was a busy year for JCSC Seniors on the Go as we explored places near and far. Late summer found travelers in beautiful Cape Cod. Cape Cod has been the most popular charter trip offered by the Center, and this last trip didn’t disappoint! A day trip to Martha’s Vineyard and a visit to the JFK Museum were highlights for many. September was the time for baseball. Participants enjoyed a doubleheader with the Atlanta Braves on an overnight trip to Atlanta. The 2020 travel year kicked off with the annual Let’s Go! Travel Show in October. Entertainment was provided by the Sweetwater Troubadours, with more than 150 participants in attendance. In November, travelers escaped the cool East Tennessee weather with a trip to sunny Jacksonville, St. Augustine and Amelia Island, Florida. New favorite day trips were discovered as charter buses visited the Southern Christmas Show and the Billy Graham Christmas Dinner in Charlotte, North Carolina; the Wohlfahrt Dinner Theatre in Wytheville; Barter Theatre in Abingdon; the Horn in the West play and dinner at the Dan’l Boone Inn in Boone; and the SoCon tournament in Asheville to cheer on our ETSU Bucs. The senior center buses were busy as well. A new discovery was the Historic Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Petros. Tickets to Lantern Express Christmas Train in Knoxville quickly sold out. Equally as fun was local favorites that included Jonesborough Repertory Theatre, Milligan College Christmas concert, Troyers Market, Rogersville Heritage Days, Erwin Apple Festival, National Weather Service Tour, Gatlinburg, Dolly Parton’s Stampede, and Osceola Island picnic. And JCSC Seniors on the Go are enthusiastic supporters of ETSU, with numerous outings to football and basketball games. JCSC Seniors on the Go meet monthly, on the second Thursday at 3:00 pm. This is always a time for fun, for making new friends, and for learning about upcoming trips. All are invited! The staff and volunteer team look forward to the time that we can travel together again. In the meantime, remember, the famous words of Babs Hoffman: Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and enjoy the journey. Explore new places on the internet, read a good book about other’s journeys, and keep yourself physically and mentally active, as we continue on a quest to enjoy Active Life through Active Living.

National Wellness Month
Wellness
August is National Wellness Month. What is wellness? Wellness is an active process of making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. When our senior staff programmers are developing programs, they are required to meet at least one of the six dimensions of wellness. What are the six dimensions of wellness? Physical – Recognizes the need for regular physical activity. It promotes personal health and safety. It also includes learning about diet and nutrition. Physical benefits of looking good and feeling terrific leads to psychological benefits of enhanced self-esteem, self-control, determination and a sense of direction. Social – Fosters meaningful interactions within a diverse community. It encourages contributing to one’s environment and community. Actively seek ways to preserve the beauty and balance of nature and making willful choices to enhance personal relationships and friendships while helping build a better living space and community. Emotional – Facilitates an awareness and acceptance of one’s feelings. The well person maintains satisfying relationships with others. Awareness of and accepting a wide range of feelings in yourself and others is essential to wellness. Better to be aware of our feelings and accept them than to deny them. Being optimistic in our approach to life is better than pessimistic. Vocational – Finding one’s calling and being a good giver and receiver. Even in retirement, one can contribute using their unique gifts , skills and talents which leads to meaningful and rewarding accomplishments. Intellectual – Stimulates the use of one’s mind. A well person cherishes intellectual growth and stimulation. We are never too old to learn. It is better to stretch and challenge our minds than to become self-satisfied and unproductive. Get those creative juices flowing.
August 2020
Spiritual – Encourage a life of meaning, values and purpose. Includes the development of a deep appreciation for the depth and expanse of life and natural forces that exist in the universe. Living each day in a way that is consistent with your values and beliefs. Each class offered by Johnson City Senior Center must meet one or more of the above dimensions. You will see the following symbols that represent the dimension by each class offering.
August is National Wellness Month
Each program that the Johnson City Senior Center offers must meet at least one of the following wellness dimensions. When staff are planning a program it is there responsibility to identify the wellness dimension their program offers.
