Hiking 101 Hip Hikers It’s October and it is fall so we would like to highlight several of our parks that have hiking trails. Some of you may already be hiking on these trails but many of you may not so we wanted to give you some information and pictures about Buffalo Mountain and Jacobs Park located in Johnson City. Buffalo Mountain Park – 5750 High Ridge Road Let’s take a walk through the park.Buffalo

Mountain Park is a 725-acre natural resource area obtained in 1944 through a land swap with the U.S. Forest Service. The park is located on the north slope of Buffalo Mountain and consists of steep topography and densely forested land. The city park is only part of Buffalo Mountain it is by no means all of Buffalo Mountain. There are approximately 10 miles of trails. More than half of the park’s acreage burned in 2008 on the Johnson City side, or the west part of the park. There is over an 800 foot elevation change from the two trailheads to Tip Top or White Rock. You will hike uphill almost the whole way. There is only one building in the park

besides the guard shack at the entrance, Harris Pavilion, which offers 3 picnic tables. (No bathrooms) There are no trashcans. Pack it in, pack it out. Most trails in the park are considered “moderate.” The main stream in the park is Catbird Creek. The Noggin trail runs along it. There are no waterfalls in the park. Huckleberry Knob is only 2/10 mile from the Harris Pavilion. It faces west and offers a good view of Johnson City. People can pick out the ETSU dome, Science Hill water tower, the VA Hospital. And, yes there are huckleberries in July (Very similar to blueberries). White Rock is the most sought after view in the park. It faces east and sits at about 3200 feet. The total mileage for the White Rock Loop is 4.4 miles. Tip Top is a good “destination hike” because there is a picnic table and a great place to stop for a snack. The Lone Oak trail takes you out of the park. It is about two miles down to Dry Creek Road. There is a small gravel parking lot area near the trail head for about four cars. Trails are blazed (marked) on trees in the colors designated on the map. There is usually a blaze in front of you or behind

Page 3

you at any time, within your line of sight. There are ATV trails on another part of the mountain in Unicoi County, accessed by a parking lot off Dry Creek Road. The number to call for ATV information is 423638-4109. You can find more information about Buffalo Mountain Park and a map of the trails on the City of Johnson City website under Parks and Recreation then click on Parks & Facilities.

Another park within Johnson City to check out is:

Jacob’s Nature Park at Sinking Creek

This park is a testament to community in the wake of tragedy. In 2004, a lively little boy named Jacob Luis Francisco who loved nature and climbing trees, became suddenly ill with a malady that stumped the doctors. Tragically, Jacob could not be saved from what was later diagnosed to be a case of E. coli poisoning, which he caught from an unknown source. Since Sinking Creek was near their neighborhood and had a known E. coli issue, Jacob’s father, mother and brother became advocates for cleaning up the creek. Working with the Boone Watershed Partnership, they galvanized an outpouring of community spirit that resulted in local volunteers, students from East Tennessee State University and government and community organization support coming together to restore the Sinking Creek and its wetlands. The park encompasses 28 urban acres designated by Johnson City as parkland, and it is an incredibly diverse space with five acres of wetlands, meadows and a ridge of hardwood forest and Sinking Creek runs through it. Thousands and thousands of plants and seeds have been planted and established that have pollinator value. There is a big emphasis on native species. Hours of work are devoted to the task each year to removing invasive plants. No one mows at Jacob’s Nature Park.

This park is a certified monarch waypoint, has a 30 tree arboretum, is a certified backyard wildlife with the National Wildlife Federation and has won awards for its pollinator habitat. The park has two entrances, 1220 King Springs Road and 1991 Ocala Street. The Ocala St. entrance boasts a beautiful outdoor classroom with cedar benches and a green roof. This urban oasis focuses on educating people about E. coli and its sources, such as leaking septic tanks or cattle in the creek. The Johnson City community hopes to someday find that the wetlands cumulative work has won and Sinking Creek can be de-listed as an E. coli source.

This string art pumpkin project is such a simple craft to make and will add the perfect pop of fall to your table or mantel!

Page 7

Place the template on top of the wood and start hammering in the nails. Hammer the nails right through the paper using the lines on the template as a guide. Make sure not to hammer them in too far, about halfway down works well, and space them evenly throughout

I just love the look of string art and how easy it is to customize a string art project with different shapes, colors, and even words! Since fall is just around the corner (is anyone else ready for cooler weather?!) I thought it would be cute to make a pumpkin shaped string art to sit out on our table. I always end up with lots of scrap wood pieces from making other projects and they are perfect for these string art projects! Supplies • wood • paint or stain • sand paper (optional) • small wire brad nails • hammer • embroidery thread • scissors • pumpkin template

After all the nails are in place, pull up the paper template to reveal your pumpkin design. Take one end of the embroidery thread and tie it in a knot around one of the nails. Start the stringing process by wrapping the thread around each nail, going up, down, across, or diagonal. Continue this process until the pumpkin shape is filled with string. Tie off the end to a nail and trim any excess with scissors.

Using brown thread, I repeated the stringing steps to create the stem. Get creative with your string art – use different colors or even create a pattern with the string by zig zagging back & forth. So many possibilities! Instructions Start by painting or staining your piece of wood. If you want a more distressed look, sand the edges a little with sandpaper after the paint has dried. Print out a pumpkin template that is roughly the same size as the piece of wood. You can find free clipart shapes by using Google or you can draw one out on a piece of paper.

How cute would it be to create these pumpkins in a few different sizes or even use some unconventional fall colors, like teal and coral! String art is such a fun project to make for any holiday or season!

Yes, funeral service attendance is now limited. No, that does not mean you cannot hold a service. Morris-Baker is an expert at webcasting funerals. We’ve offered this capability for years for family overseas and relatives/friends who could not attend, etc. Fortunately, we can use this same technology to allow anyone in the world to view a funeral service from afar during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Tune-up Tuesday

Depending on whether you watch TV or not, you will have two options to choose: Option One: TV Watcher – During your favorite show or news hour – Each time a commercial comes on start walking either in place or down the hall whatever works best for you and continue to walk during the entire length of the commercial. Do this for each commercial during that one- hour program. Time the total amount that you walk during each commercial and total all the times and I bet you will be amazed at how much time spent on commercials. Option Two: Walking – total of 15 minutes. Follow the following instructions: Walk at a slow pace one minute Pick up the pace for 30 seconds Slower 30 seconds Alternate Faster walk then slower walk for 6 minutes (If you are timing from the start it would be at the eight minute mark) Walk at moderate pace for two minutes Then walk faster for 30 seconds, then slower for 30 seconds (This will start at the ten minute mark) Alternate fast walk and slow walk for 5 minutes (30 seconds each) Then walk slow for one minute to cool down Total time will be 16 minutes Be sure you work at your level. If you have not been walking already for 15 minutes, start out slower and gradually increase your time. Some of you may even be able to run for the fast time. Listen to your body. After you have done either option, try doing this pattern to work your brain – Right arm up, left hand down, then Left arm up, right arm out to the side. Repeat that 5 times Or work a puzzle, do something to work your brain.

Tips for Telemedicine Appointments

October 2020

Ready, Set, Serve…..Volunteer! On a mission to engage adults in Active Life through Active Living

Give yourself enough time for the initial set-up     

Ask the office staff what app or website they use for telemedicine and if they have a help desk or number to call if you have trouble or questions. If you are not comfortable with technology, ask a trusted friend or relative to assist in getting your device set up and stay close by during the appointment. Download the appropriate app or visit the website before the day of your first telehealth appointment and get familiar with it. Set up your account or login information, if needed. If the app or site allows, test both your speakers and microphone ahead of time to make sure you can hear and be heard.

Be prepared and minimize distractions     

Find a quiet place for your visit, and let others know to minimize noise and interruptions. Make arrangements for any children or pets so they don’t distract you. Make sure your device is charged and that you have a reliable internet connection. Have good lighting so that the provider can see you well. Usually having light or a window facing you is best. If you have home medical equipment, like blood pressure monitor, scale, glucometer or thermometer, check these readings right before the appointment or have the devices nearby in case the provider wants you to check these numbers.JOHNSON CITY SENIOR SERVICES

Eucalyptus Shower Melts Recipe

Page 13

Press your mixture firmly into your mold. It may get watery at the top once it settles. Just take a paper towel and blot the water away. Put it in the freezer to dry.

After about an hour, your shower melts are ready to use. Store them in a dry, airtight container for 1-2 months.

• • • • • • •

Ingredients 1 cup baking soda 2-5 tablespoons water 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil 10 drops peppermint essential oil 10 drops lavender essential oil Soap colorant (optional) Silicone mold

Directions Add baking soda to a glass or metal bowl. Slowly mix water with baking soda one tablespoon at a time until you reach a thick paste consistency.

You may not need 5 full tablespoons. I ended up using about 4 to get the consistency I was looking for.

Add in your essential oil and soap colorant if using and mix well. The amount of each is up to your personal preference. I used 10 drops of each scent, but if you want a stronger aroma, you could easily do 15-20 drops. You can also add a drop to the finished shower melt right before you get in the shower if they don’t turn out to be strong enough. I’ve used food coloring in the past without any issues, but you can get soap colorant for a reasonable price at places like Hobby Lobby or Amazon. This is what the mixture looks like after the soap coloring is added. It’s a little like wet sand.

This is the time when you can join, switch or drop your Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage coverage.

Taking the time to review your plan and compare it to others on the market every fall may reduce your out-of-pocket costs and ensure that you find a plan that covers all your prescriptions. Research shows that the average Medicare beneficiary can save $300 or more annually on their medications if they review their Part D coverage.
