Walkers & Talkers* Tweetsie Trail, Johnson City (Ages 50+) Cost: Free Wednesday, October 2, 9:30a Come out and enjoy the ever-popular Tweetsie Trail. We should be seeing the Fall colors as we walk out and back from the trailhead for a total of 3 miles. This is an easy walk to enjoy the local beauty. Transportation van from MPCC to trail head returning to MPCC by 11:30a.

Hiking 101* Holston Lake Spillway Trail, Bristol, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $2 Tuesday, October 8, 9:30a This is an easy out and back trail on a gravel service road with views of South Holston Lake and the beautiful Holston Mountain ridgeline. The hike should allow for the view of the Fall color. The trail is relatively flat and is a total of 3.5 miles roundtrip. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 1:30p.

Erwin Linear Path, Erwin, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $1 Tuesday, October 22, 9:30a

Hip Hikers* AT/Iron Mountain Gap to Cherry Gap Shelter, Unicoi, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $2 Thursday, October 3, 7:30a Start at the Iron Mountain Gap on Highway 107 and hike the ridgeline with views of the surrounding mountains and early Fall foliage. This section of the Appalachian Trail is rated as intermediate with an out and back mileage of 6.1 total miles. The goal is to hike to the Cherry Gap Shelter with an elevation of 3,900 feet where we will break for lunch. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 3:00p. Fred Behrend Trail, Roan Mountain State Park, Roan Mountain, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $2 Thursday, October 10, 7:30a Fred Behrend Trail is a moderate to difficult 2.35 mile hike with some short steep climbs that loops around the entire campground and meanders along the Doe River before entering lush thickets of rhododendron. Expect to see lots of mountain hollows and experience stream crossings. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 2:00p. AT/Hwy 91 to Double Springs Shelter, Shady Valley, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $3 Thursday, October 17, 7:30a Hike through the mountain pastures of Osborne Farms, enjoy scenic views of Shady Valley, and mountain forests as we hike to Double Springs Shelter. The hike is 7 miles out and back and is rated as intermediate. We will break for lunch at the shelter. Bring lunch and plenty of water. Carpooling from MPCC; returning to MPCC by 3:00p. Preparation is the key to success! Remember to use your Hiking Checklist to pack for each trip. If you do not have a checklist, please contact the front desk to receive one.

The trail is paved and mostly flat, coursing through the Cherokee National Forest northwest of Banner Hill. It winds through wooded areas and past natural ponds and wetlands lakes, as well as past light industrial areas on the western edge of the town of Erwin. Walk will consist of approximately 3 miles out and back starting at the northern trailhead. This is an easy hike for all levels of hikers to enjoy the Fall colors Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 12:30p.

Legal Aid-Estate Planning Clinic (Ages 18+) Monday, October 14 3p Cost: Free This a Free Walk-in CLINIC to assist seniors and other individuals who need assistance to prepare the following documents: Simple Last Will and Testament, Power of Attorney and Advanced Healthcare Plan/Living Will. Please register, walk in basis for assistance. This is not an informational class. This is a clinic, where you will meet individually with an attorney to prepare your document. Bring important paperwork with you. You Are the Help Until Help Arrives (Ages 18+) Monday, October 28 9a - 12p Cost: Free Instructor: Kathleen Collins, TN Department of Health Learn five simple steps that may save a life: Call 9-1-1, Stay Safe, Stop the Bleeding, Position the Injured, Provide Comfort. Life-threatening emergencies can happen fast and emergency responders aren’t always nearby. You may be able to save a life by taking simple actions immediately. You Are the Help Until Help Arrives is a training that teaches individuals what to do in the immediate aftermath of a disaster or emergency that can aid in saving lives. Participants will receive hands-on training with tourniquets and wound-packing techniques. The training is free and lasts three (3) hours. Medicare Open Enrollment EvenT Medicare’s Part D Annual Enrollment Period is October 15 – December 7. This is the period each year when Medicare beneficiaries can join, switch or drop their Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage coverage. Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans change their coverage and costs each year, so it is important to review your plan and compare it to others on the market every fall. This year, the Johnson City Senior Center is partnering with the Tennessee State Health Insurance Assistance Program (TN SHIP) and ETSU’s College of Public Health to provide free and objective assistance in comparing Part D and Medicare Advantage plans. Trained Medicare counselors will be on hand on October 18th from 9am-12pm and November 8th from 9am-12pm to assist Medicare beneficiaries and their families in comparing Part D or Medicare Advantage plans for 2020. Appointments are preferred for these events. For more information and to set up an appointment please call (423) 722-5205. Tennessee SHIP is a free program designed to help people in Tennessee with Medicare. Counselors are specially trained to answer

questions and provide objective, easy-tounderstand information about Medicare. SHIP receives grant funding from the Administration for Community Living, Department of Health and Human Services, to provide direct, local assistance to Medicare beneficiaries through one-on-one, counseling sessions (both in-person and over the phone), presentations, and public education programs. AARP Drivers Safety Class (Ages 50+) Instructor: Diane Bolger Cost: $15 for AARP members, $20 for nonmembers to be paid to the Instructor on the day of the class 2 day class on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 12 and 13, 9a-1p Some of the topics the class will cover: • How to minimize the effects of dangerous blind spots • How to maintain the proper following distance behind another car • The safest ways to change lanes and make turns at busy intersections • Proper use of safety belts, air bags, antilock brakes and new technology found in cars today • Ways to monitor your own and others’ driving skills and capabilities • The effects of medications on driving (Source: AARP) and more. We will park in the middle of Gatlinburg and you are off on your own. You can shop, go to the various museums, or take the Skylift to the new Gatlinburg Skybridge (admission is $20). Located at the top of the SkyLift, the Gatlinburg SkyBridge is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America and the most spectacular experience in the Smokies. From the mountain-top SkyDeck, the SkyBridge quite literally crosses the sky as it stretches 680 feet across a deep valley in a single span. Guests can walk across at their own pace, taking in the panoramic views and enjoying the spectacular setting before walking back when they’re ready. With a height of 140 feet at its midpoint, the SkyBridge is an incredible but easily attainable experience you’ll remember for a lifetime - especially as you cross the glass-floor panels in the middle of the span. The Appalachian Men’s Ensemble Concert

The Appalachian Men’s Ensemble is a community men’s choir based in Johnson City, will perform a concert titled, “Harvest Homecoming’ on Saturday, October 12, at 7:30p at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 20 S. Roan Street in Johnson City. The concert will include a variety of music that explores the idea of home and celebrates our region. Selections will include familiar hymns, spirituals, folk, and patriotic songs. A suggested donation of $10 will be collected at the door.

Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention (Ages 18+) Mondays and Wednesdays, 11a Cost will be $5 per class (50% discount for SilverSneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Tai Chi for Arthritis is an evidence-based, low-impact Tai Chi form modified for seniors. It has been shown to reduce pain and stiffness associated with arthritis while improving strength, range of motion, and balance thereby reducing the risk of falling. Classwork includes gentle stretching, breath work, focus on body alignment, and slow, controlled movement. With adjustments the exercises are appropriate for individuals of all physical conditions and can be done seated in a chair.

Qigong (Ages 18+) Mondays and Wednesdays, 12p Cost will be $5 per class (50% discount for SilverSneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Qigong is a part of traditional Chinese medicine that includes easy to learn, gentle, flowing movements that stimulate the meridian system of the body and promote relation and mindfulness. Class work also includes warmups, gentle stretching of all the major joints, and breath work. Evidencebased studies show that Qigong practice can improve a wide variety of chronic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, while reducing stress and promoting emotional health and mental function. With adaptations this class is appropriate for everyone regardless of physical limitations and can be done seated in a chair.

Pilates (Ages 18+) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:45a Cost: $2 Instructor: Lauren Qualls Pilates is an exercise system of movements that uses the mind and the body to enhance muscular strength, improve flexibility and overall health and wellness. Pilates movements requires control of your own body to properly execute precise repetitions during exercise. All movements will be performed on exercise mats so participants are encouraged to bring their own mat to each class.
