JCSC Foundation News

The Foundation has decided to change the date and name of their Christmas Box project to Spring into Giving for Seniors with boxes being delivered March 30 – April 4, 2020 for seniors in need. The Foundation is in the planning stages right now for this new project. You will be receiving more information in the mail regarding our new project so, please consider a donation to the center at the first of the year. Our Foundation Board consists of members: President Janice Shelton, President-Elect Rebecca Hennessee, Secretary Charles Hough, Treasurer Frank Calderala, Past President James Hunter, and members: Barbara Block, Bo Deaton, Ted Eades, Frank Hawkins, Jeff Johnson, Whitney Larkin, Deborah Marshall-Polon, Brackton Smith and Teresa Treadway. Wishing you a wonderful new year in 2020.

Inclement Weather Policy: If Johnson City Schools are closed for inclement weather, the center will open at 10:00am and all instructor lead programs cancelled and the center will close at 5:00pm. If the Johnson City Schools are on a 2 hour delay for inclement weather, the center will open at 10:00am and programs will occur as normal and the center will close at normal hours.

ALERT

Starting January 1, 2020 the Johnson City Senior Center will accept the Renew Active™ program by United Healthcare. Please see front desk staff to enroll in the Renew Active™ program at our center. You will be asked to provide a confirmation code assigned by United Healthcare. You will also be given a list of eligible classes through this program. We will still be offering the SilverSneakers® program for those whose insurance covers SilverSneakers®. So that our records are accurate, everyone will be required to renew your certification (SilverSneakers® or Renew Active™) through our center in January. Please see front desk staff for more information. Many of our members have fragrance sensitivity. Perfumes, aftershaves and other scented beauty products may cause allergic reactions. To be considerate of our members and staff please refrain from using scented products. Thank You!

FREE TAX ASSISTANCE Volunteers working through AARPVITA will prepare your Federal and Tennessee taxes for free at the Memorial Park Community Center beginning Tuesday February 4, 2019. Tax preparation will be by appointment only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and

4:00 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday until April 10. All volunteers are trained using IRS and AARP-VITA standards and must pass an IRS test. They can prepare all individual and joint tax returns, with a few exceptions for certain complicated returns. There are no age or income limitations for this free service. You must bring proof of your Social Security number and the Social Security numbers of all dependents on the return, photo identification for all individuals, and all tax documents such as W-2s, 1099-Rs, SSA-1099s, 1099Bs, brokers statements, 1099-INTs and 1099-DIVs, as well as your filed 2018 tax return. If you purchased health insurance through the Marketplace, you must also bring your form 1095-A, which you will receive from the federal government. Until you have received all needed forms, the volunteers will be unable to complete your returns. For appointments, please call the Center staff at 434-6237 beginning on January 13th.

We trust that you had a blessed and happy Christmas and New Year with your family and friends. Now that January is here, we have an important question – have you made your travel plans for 2020?? JCSC Seniors on the Go has a great selection of motor coach trips for you to consider. The first trip in 2020 will be to our Nation’s Capital, Washington DC! This trip includes many of the highlights of a trip to DC, including two day and one evening tour, Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, and the new Museum of the Bible. Price is only $799 pp/do, including 4 nights lodging, 8 meals, and your trip insurance. Final payment will be due on January 13. For spring, Steve and Scott invite you to join them on a fabulous tour to Philadelphia, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, and Atlantic City. Departing May 12, you will enjoy 4 nights lodging, 8 meals, guided tour of Philadelphia, and time at the Inner Harbor (Baltimore’s fantastic waterfront) and the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk, with time to walk along the shore, shop, ride the Boardwalk trolley, or try your luck at one of the Boardwalk casinos. Spring is a beautiful time to visit the northeast, and Steve and Scott are excited to share their favorite sights with you! This trip also includes a surprise stop on the way home. Cost for the trip is $825 pp/do; final payment is due by March 20. The January meeting will be on Thursday, January 9 at 3:00 pm. Hope to see you there! It has been shown to reduce pain and stiffness associated with arthritis while improving strength, range of motion, and balance thereby reducing the risk of falling. Classwork includes gentle stretching, breath work, focus on body alignment, and slow, controlled movement. Advanced class placement requires instructor approval. Qigong (Ages 18+) Mondays and Wednesdays, 12p Cost will be $5 per class (50% discount to Silver Sneaker™ and Renew Active™ participants) Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Qigong is a part of traditional Chinese medicine that includes easy to learn, gentle, flowing movements that stimulate the meridian system of the body and promote relation and mindfulness. Class work also includes warmups, gentle stretching of all the major joints, and breath work. Evidencebased studies show that Qigong practice can improve a wide variety of chronic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, while reducing stress and promoting emotional health and mental function. Bingocize® is a successful preventative health promotion program designed to increase the physical fitness, health knowledge, and social engagement of senior adults. Bingocize® has proved to be an effective, enjoyable, and easily replicated way to improve physical activity adherence and ultimately health- related quality of life. Bingocize® combines a bingo-like game with exercise and health education. Come out and enjoy the fun.

Keep It Moving

A supervised exercise program for individuals who have finished Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy or been told by your physician that you need to exercise but don’t know how. This program serves as the next step in your progression in establishing a safe, independent exercise program. This program requires a referral from a medical professional. This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing postsurgical physical therapy. The goal of this group is to build a community around helping people navigate their path towards becoming healthier by losing weight and increasing physical activity in their lives. If you have tried to lose weight, you know the challenge is staying on track. Many weight loss programs can work, but that’s crucial is commitment, support, and accountability. Group members will be able to rely on each other to help with inspiration and the belief they can sustain motivation and be successful.
