JCSC Foundation News Johnson City Senior Center Foundation - Who Are We? The Johnson City Senior Center Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization administered by a group of volunteers appointed by the Commissioners of Johnson City. The Foundation raises dollars to help support the center’s Community Health and Activity Coordinator, Jeanne Clarke, RN; fellowship program for low income seniors, day trip support; Senior Chorale through an Arts Grant match; and Christmas boxes for low income seniors. The Foundation’s major fundraising efforts include: Pickleball Tournament (October 25 & 26, 2019); Kroger Rewards program; donations from our senior center members and Christmas box donations. The Foundation will be kicking off our Spring Appeal for donations. Members will be receiving an appeal letter and donation card. Please consider making a donation to our Foundation. AT-Coon Den Falls to AT, Carter County, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $2 Thursday, May 9, 7:30a Trail is located in the Dennis Cove area of Carter County and loops 3.6 miles around the Coon Den Falls area. The trail has some challenging sections with an elevation gain of 1020 feet. It is rated as an Intermediate trail. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling; returning to MPCC by 2:00p.

Willow Springs Park, Johnson City (Ages 50+) Cost: Free Wednesday, May 15, 9:30a The trail consists of 1.5 mile paved surface loop around Willow Springs Park. The trail is flat and provides a pleasant view of the area. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 11:30a.

Hiking 101* Buffalo Mountain, Johnson City (Ages 50+) Cost: Free Tuesday, May 7, 9:30a The trail consists of 1 mile section to Huckleberry knob to view the Johnson City area. City Naturalist Connie Deegan will provide an interpretive viewpoint of flora and fauna. The trail is rated as Easy with some elevation gain. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 1:00p.

Martha Sundquist State Reserve, Tennessee Gulf Trail, Hartford, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $5 Thursday, May 16, 7:30a The fairly flat Tennessee Gulf Trail offers visitors a pleasant hike through rhododendron and magnolia trees along the Gulf Fork of Big Creek in Cocke County. The trail crosses the Big Creek several times via rustic eastern hemlock bridges, two of which are named for people who were instrumental in the acquisition of the forest and construction of the trail. The trail is out and back and is 7.0 miles long. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 3:30p.

AT Shook Branch to Watauga Dam, Carter County, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $2 Thursday, May 30, 7:30a Hike the AT from Shook Branch to Watauga Dam. The trail follows the lake edge while slowly climbing to the Watauga Dam. The views from the dam are great. The trail is rated as intermediate and is a total of 5.5 miles out and back. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 2:00p.

Iris Festival in Greeneville (Ages 50+) Saturday, May 18 Leave MPCC at 9:15a, return approx. 4p Cost: $2 Join us for a trip to beautiful Downtown Greenville for the annual Iris Festival. More than 160 crafters and merchants line the streets and fill the parking lots of the festival area, some of which demonstrate arts like wheel-thrown pottery, crocheting and woodworking. Many of the crafters provide samples like homemade apple butter and jellies to guests during the event Source: Greene County Chamber of Commerce.

The Johnson City Senior Center Dandy Line Dancers will be performing from 10:45a-11:30a, so go watch and support one of our volunteer groups. Please Pre-register.

This free camp, which won the 2018 Southeastern Association of Area

Agencies on Aging “Positive Images in Aging Award,” is open to third-graders through seniors and offers instruction from educators and experienced teachers in a number of music, art and movement classes.

Participants can select two of the specialized classes and join in several group activities. Lunch will be provided.

Instructors include Cherry Smith, Terry Countermine, Gail Morris, Gretchen Culp and the Johnson City Senior Chorale. Silver Sneakers® Circuit

(Ages 18+) Mondays and Wednesdays, 11a Cost will be $5 per class (50% discount for SilverSneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Tai Chi for Arthritis is an evidence-based, low-impact Tai Chi form modified for seniors. It has been shown to reduce pain and stiffness associated with arthritis while improving strength, range of motion, and balance thereby reducing the risk of falling. Classwork includes gentle stretching, breath work, focus on body alignment, and slow, controlled movement. With adjustments the exercises are appropriate for individuals of all physical conditions and can be done seated in a chair.

Qigong

(Ages 18+) Mondays and Wednesdays, 12p Cost will be $5 per class (50% discount for SilverSneakers® eligible participants) Instructor: Tonya Van Hook Qigong is a part of traditional Chinese medicine that includes easy to learn, gentle, flowing movements that stimulate the meridian system of the body and promote relation and mindfulness. Class work also includes warmups, gentle stretching of all the major joints, and breath work. Evidence-based studies show that Qigong practice can improve a wide variety of chronic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, while reducing stress and promoting emotional health and mental function. With adaptations this class is appropriate for everyone regardless of physical limitations and can be done seated in a chair.

All Out Fitness

(Ages 18+) Tuesdays, 8:30a Cost: $2 Instructor: Lauren Qualls Blast your cardio fitness level through the roof with the best of any type of cardio training the instructor feels like throwing at you! You will challenge your aerobic threshold every time so come prepared to get your cardio on!

Pilates

(Ages 18+) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:45a Cost: $2

Instructor: Lauren Qualls Pilates is an exercise system of movements that uses the mind and the body to enhance muscular strength, improve flexibility and overall health and wellness.

Pilates movements requires control of your own body to properly execute precise repetitions during exercise.

All movements will be performed on exercise mats so participants are encouraged to bring their own mat to each class.

Stretch and Sculpt Yoga

(Ages 18+) Tuesdays & Thursdays 11-12:15p Cost: $5 Instructor: Dixie Neth Join us for a softer, gentler, more flowing class. There will be mostly floor work and encouragement of those who are stiff and suffering from winter cold. This will be a breath of fresh air as we explore the world of yoga postures, breathing practices, and relaxation techniques.

FUNdamentals of Yoga

(Ages 18+) Wednesdays, 6p Cost: $5 Instructor: Carrie Maggard Learn proper alignment, poses, breathing and more all while having FUN! This is a safe environment to empower, educate and inspire you to live healthier and happier lives.

Designed with beginners and older adults in mind but all are welcome to enjoy this restorative practice.

Outshine Fitness

(Ages 18+) Fridays, 8:30-9:30a Cost: $2 Instructor: Lauren Qualls Its back! This outdoor workout is a great class to add to your fitness regimen. By combining an outdoor walk/run with weighted exercises, this class shows instant results!

The class features a “go at your own pace” format, so it welcomes all varieties of fitness levels. As your energy level and strength increase, so will the difficulty of the class.

Keep It Moving

A supervised exercise program for individuals who have finished Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy or been told by your physician that you need to exercise but don’t know how. This program serves as the next step in your progression in establishing a safe, independent exercise program. This program requires a referral from a medical professional. This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing post-surgical physical therapy. Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City Dominion Wants to Sock Out Alzheimer's One of our favorite events to participate in as a community and team is when we are able to come together to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease. Many lives have been touched by this disease in one way or another whether it be as a caregiver, family member, friend, or facing a diagnosis yourself. Each spring, Alzheimer’s Tennessee does a SOCK OUT Alzheimer’s Day. Everyone puts on purple and orange socks to draw people’s attention to our vision: making Alzheimer’s a memory. This is one small way our team participates and this year our team members knocked it out of the park!

Everywhere you looked someone was walking past you with their pants rolled up just enough to show their awesome socks.

The first Saturday in April every year we will gather with hundreds of others from around our community for our annual Light the Way Walk with the Northeast Division of Alzheimer’s Tennessee. It is events like our annual Sock Out Day, Legislative Day, and annual fundraisers that draw our attention back to the real reason that we do what we do; we have a heart for seniors and want to honor God through our service to them. It is because of the wonderful residents in our community that we will continue to work towards a future without Alzheimer’s Disease.
