Walkers & Talkers* Willow Springs Park Interpretive Hike, Johnson City (Ages 50+) Cost: Free Wednesday, September 18, 9:30a The trail consists of approximately 2.0 miles of mostly paved surface that loops around Willow Springs Park. The trail is flat and provides a pleasant view of the area with pond, ducks and turtles. City Naturalist, Connie Deegan will provide an interpretive discussion of the area and upcoming fall season. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 12:00p.

Hiking 101* Steele Creek State Park, Lake Side Loop, Bristol, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $2 Tuesday, September 10, 7:30a The trail begins at Rooster Front Park and follows the creek to Steele Creek Dam and surrounding lake. The trail is a relatively flat gravel surface beside the lake with benches and picnic tables. The trail is an in-and-out hike rated as easy with a maximum total of 4.2 miles round trip. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 12:00p.

Hip Hikers* Overmountian Victory Trail, Hampton Creek Cove State Natural Area, Roan Mountain, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $2 Thursday, September 5, 7:30a Hike through pasture and forest while hiking on the historic trail. We will hike up the Victory trail to the intersection with the Burchfield trail and return to trailhead. Trail is a 3.5 mile loop and is rated as intermediate. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 3:00p. AT/Hugh Gap to Little Rock Knob, Roan Mountain, TN (Ages 50+) Cost: $2 Thursday, September 12, 7:30a Little Rock Knob, Tennessee’s 37th highest peak, is one of the principle summits flanking the west side of Roan Mountain. The trail is a total of 5.0 miles out and back with 878 feet of elevation gain and is rates as intermediate. The trial is forest covered and provides views of the area mountain ranges. Bring a snack or light lunch and plenty of water. Transportation van from MPCC and carpooling if needed; returning to MPCC by 3:00p. AT/Max Patch to Lemon Gap, Hot Springs, NC (Ages 50+) Cost: Free Thursday, September 26, 7:30a Hike to the bald of Max Patch Mountain on the AT. The hike is 5.3 miles and is a point to point with a shuttle. The hike is rated as challenging Bring lunch and plenty of water. Carpooling from MPCC; returning to MPCC by 4:00p.

Washington County S.A.L.T. Council

The Washington County S.A.L.T. Council (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) meet on a quarterly basis. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, September 17 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jonesborough Senior Center. Kathleen Collins with the Northeast Regional Health Office Emergency Preparedness will be the presenter. The “READYS!” is an emergency preparedness training that is applicable to everyone. The program focuses on how to prepare for an emergency or disaster, and the importance of creating a personal emergency plan and emergency go-bag. Participants will learn how to make a plan that includes family, friends and emergency responders, and how to build a kit for emergencies

Tour of Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary in Petros, TN Thursday, September 19 Leave MPCC at 8:30a, return approx. 4p Cost: $8 for transportation, $12 to be paid when we arrive. The facility was established in 1896 and operated until 2009 and is located just 16 miles from Oak Ridge, TN. The prison is nearly encircled by rugged wooded terrain in a remote section of the Cumberland Plateau, adjacent to Frozen Head State Park and Natural Area. Tours are self-guided, former prison guards and former inmates guards will be nearby to answer any questions or share a brief story. There are more than 30 stations, each containing the story of what happened in that particular spot. As you move from one station to another, you will be able to imagine what life would have been like behind these walls. Lunch will be on your own at the Warden’s Table, located on site. There is a $12 admission fee to be paid when we arrive at the facility.

We have a surplus of fabric which has been donated to the center. In an effort to give back to the community, we want to be a blessing to those in need by sewing oversized lap quilts and/or pet beds. Sewing machines will be set up and all supplies will be made available to make them. These will be donated to the community.

Due to large and generous donations of yarn we will be crocheting and knitting for community service. Afghans and Blankets for those in need and Hats, Scarves and Gloves for the Girls Inc. Power Walking (Adults and Seniors) Instructor: Heidi Perry M-W-F 10-11a Cost: $3 per session or $25 per month

An adult only time for therapy that you can engage in activities of your choice to fit your therapeutic needs. This pool is for low impact swimming. You will not be allowed to jump, splash or make big waves. Exception: Private swim lessons conducted by City of Johnson City contract employees.

Cardio Waves (Teens, Adults and Seniors) Instructor: Heidi Perry M-W-F 6-7p Cost: $3 per session or $25 per month This is a high intensity water aerobics program geared towards individuals who are looking to push their limits! All equipment is provided.

Arthritis Class (Adults & Seniors) Instructor: Heidi Perry T & Th 11-11:40a Cost: $3 per class This class will help you get your gears moving, not grinding in the morning with an expertly tailored workout. Arthritis class is instructed by an American Arthritis Foundation certified instructor. All equipment is provided. A doctor’s note is required but you are welcome to try a class without the note and bring one to the next session.

Silver Sneakers® Splash (Seniors) Instructor: Heidi Perry T & Th 11:45a-12:45p Cost: $3 per class (Free to Silver Sneaker® participants) A fun low impact program geared toward senior citizens looking to improve the quality of their social life and physical well-being.

Keep It Moving A supervised exercise program for individuals who have finished Cardiac Rehab, Physical Therapy or been told by your physician that you need to exercise but don’t know how. This program serves as the next step in your progression in establishing a safe, independent exercise program. This program requires a referral from a medical professional. This is an ideal program for the individual who is facing total joint replacement both before surgery and after finishing postsurgical physical therapy.
