EDITOR LETTER
Dear reader, A few weeks ago, on a seemingly ordinary night, my kids had just gone to sleep (or were at least pretending). I was on Facetime with Frenchie. For those who didn’t read the last letter, Frenchie is—as my Aunt Kitty put it—my new beau. We were having a discussion (he calls all conversations discussions, which I rather like), and my heart rate increased out of nowhere. Now, if you’re a woman without a heart problem, it might be reasonable to assume, “Well, she just really likes him.” But my heart problem—pregnancy induced cardiomyopathy stemming from my second pregnancy—started while I was sitting on my couch, eating grapes, and I went into ventricular tachycardia out of nowhere. I was twenty-seven. From that point on, an increased heart rate has never been simple. At first, I didn’t say anything to Frenchie. Of course, he knew in abstraction that I have a heart problem, but it’s a whole other thing to hear from your girlfriend that her heart is out of control. So, instead I tried to pretend it wasn’t happening. My logic was If I ignore this, it will go away. So, I tried to concentrate on what he was saying, but I ended up telling him anyway. Now I’m freaked out, he’s freaked out, so I ask him to time me for sixty seconds and I put my fingers up to my neck to count my pulse. This is mostly to give him something to do—I know my pulse is high, too high. 120s, but I don’t give him the number. We wait a few minutes and do it again. 130s. At some point, I text Lindsey and tell her she might have to come over to stay with my boys while I go to the hospital. Times like this, I’m always grateful to know that if the boys wake in the middle of the night and I’m not there, Aunt Lindsey will be. My fear has never been dying. It’s always been leaving them too early. There’s no one else I would want them to be with if the worst happened. I took my pulse with Frenchie a couple more times. I texted Lindsey and told her I wasn’t going into the hospital. Because breakthrough cases with the Delta variant are happening and emergency waiting rooms are full of people with COVID, I made the decision to stay home that night. I got off Facetime and tried to sleep. I don’t remember falling asleep, but I must have because I woke up the next morning with a normal pulse. You might think I made the wrong decision. You might even be right. But that night, it worked. My decision would have been different pre-COVID. I would have gone in because it’s 12
BOZZIMEDIA.com / OCTOBER 2021
better safe than sorry. I would have been annoyed sitting in the waiting room for hours only for the ER to run tests that have nothing to do with my condition (not their fault—protocol). But I would have been monitored, electrodes displaying my annoying heart, and if something happened while I was under the team’s care—such as going into ventricular fibrillation—I would have had a good shot at being saved. They would tell me if I would be more comfortable being monitored overnight, they could do that, and I would say yes because that is what my mom would want me to say. I can hear her, Better safe than sorry, Meg. But that wasn’t the decision I made that night. Instead, I made the decision to wonder, “What if I’m staying home and this is the time I need it?” More and more ICU beds are going to people suffering the worst effects of COVID-19 and a majority of those patients are unvaccinated. If you’re not getting vaccinated, it’s important to understand that you aren’t just making a decision for yourself. You’re making it for all the sick people who might need those hospital beds. People who are waiting for surgeries—a Sept. 17 Spokesman-Review article told the story of Emily Wynne, a forty-four year-old woman waiting to get a tumor in her breast removed. Her surgeon’s medical team is in the COVID ward. This is preventable. “I know I am not the only one; it’s just frustrating,” Wynne told The SpokesmanReview. “I have two young kids, and I feel like I’m a young person, and I just think if this delay in surgery affects my prognosis it really sucks. I was up for doing whatever I need to do to give me the best chances.” You’re deciding for her, and many other people like her. There is too much at stake for me to be anything but direct. If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, do it. No, I can’t make this decision for you, but you’re deciding the fate of others. Put your finger to your neck, feel your pulse. That’s a gift. Don’t squander it. Sincerely, Megan Louise

SPOKANE RISING
I n a l l , h e r e a r e f i f t e e n r e a s o n s t o m a ke the drive down to Pullman this fall: 1 . MISS HUDDY’S BARBECUE — When the Schotzkos first launched their barbecue business, named for their daughter Hudson, the wait was sometimes two or more hours. And that was outdoors in winter in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. Patrons started lining up as early as 7:30 a.m. Prep starts Monday the week of a cook. Tuesday, Tim trims the brisket. Wednesday, he makes sausage, grinding trimmings, and stuffing casings. Thursday, he cold-smokes sausages. Friday, Molly makes sides: mac and cheese, slaw, beans, potato salad based on her mom’s recipe, and banana pudding. Saturday, Tim’s up early to cook, a process that lasts well into the night. Sunday, they’re on site around 7:30 a.m. Service starts at 11, and patrons come from throughout the Palouse as well as Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston, Clarkston, Tri-Cities, Walla Walla, and more. “We love that they’re willing to drive to taste our food,” Tim says. “We also love that they’re probably visiting other places in Pullman, not just us. That’s good for our entire community.” misshuddysbarbecue.com. 2. WSU FOOTBALL — Martin Stadium is back open at full capacity for football games for the first time since the 2019 season. The Cougs are scheduled to play at home on Gesa Field three times in October and once in November. Games are Oct. 9 versus Oregon State, Oct. 16 versus Stanford, Oct. 23 versus Brigham Young and Nov. 19 versus Arizona. wsucougars.com/sports/football. 3. FERDINAND’S ICE CREAM SHOPPE — WSU’s on-campus scoop shop is
usually open Monday through Friday but also opens on home football game days. This is your chance to get Cougar Gold straight from the source. Buying the beloved cheese here saves customers approximately $10 to $15 per can. Other flavors include sweet basil, smoky cheddar, dill garlic, Natural Viking, and Crimson Fire! (Yes, the exclamation point is part of the spicy cheese’s proper name.) Don’t forget the ice cream. Like the cheese, it’s made from milk from WSU’s own dairy herd. Favorite flavors are Cougar Tracks, Huckleberry Ripple, and Apple Cup Crisp. creamery.wsu.edu and visitor.wsu.edu.
4. STUDENT-GROWN VEGGIES — The farm stand at WSU’s Eggert Family Organic Farm is open 3-6 p.m. on Fridays through October. Stock up on sugar dumpling and delicata squash, pumpkins, shallots, yellow onions, carrots, cucumbers, beets, potatoes,

5. ART — Admission is free at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU, which features a couple shows this fall exploring issues of race. The Black Lives Matter Artist Grant Exhibition celebrates twenty Washington artists—including Grace June of Spokane—who are using their talents to respond to systematic racism. The exhibit runs through Dec. 18. Mirror, Mirror: The Prints of Alison Saar runs through March 12 and features prints and sculptures from the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his family foundation. Saar is a Los Angeles artist whose work narrates the African American experience. museum.wsu.edu.
6. BIG BUTTES — The popular Pine
Ridge Trail is an approachable 3.5-mile loop to the 3,651-foot summit at Kamiak Butte State Park, fourteen miles north of Pullman, where admission is free. If you don’t feel like hiking but still want to check out sweeping vistas of the Palouse, get a Discover Pass and drive the winding road around Steptoe Butte State Park, thirty miles north of Pullman. The 3,612-foot summit—the site of a hotel that opened in 1888 and burned down in 1911—is popular with photographers for its panoramic views. parks.state.wa.us/592/Steptoe-Butte.
7. BILL CHIPMAN PALOUSE TRAIL — This easy, seven-mile trail follows
11. HOT NOODS — The belly-warming broth at O-Ramen doesn’t come out of a bag. Owner
8. A ROUND OR TWO WITH A VIEW — WSU’s Palouse Ridge Golf
12. RICO’S — This downtown public house, established in 1909, has been a mainstay for
a former rail line connecting Pullman with Moscow. It’s flat and paved and perfect for cycling, walking, running, and rollerblading.
Orin Ford —he’s the O in O-Ramen—simmers his for twelve hours to get that rich umami flavor. Opened in 2019, his downtown eatery serves up its best-selling tonkotsu (pork, pickled ginger, wood ear mushrooms, seaweed, soy sauce, a jammy egg, and green onions) along with edamame, fried pork dumplings, vegan ramen made with garbanzo bean broth, and more. o-ramen.com. generations of college students. Club’s eighteen-hole course offers specialevent packages for home football game weekends. Aprés-golf, relax at Round Top Public House, overlooking the course. It offers the best views of the region’s rolling hills of any restaurant in town. Popular dishes include crab beignets and a flat iron steak with chimichurri. palouseridge.com and roundtopph.com.

downtown restaurant offers one of the best dining experiences in the Inland Northwest. Start with the signature appetizer: pork souvlakia with pita bread and tzatziki sauce. Mains include the oft ordered carbonara and moqueca, a traditional Brazilian seafood stew. My go-to is roasted chicken on a bed of mashed potatoes with bread salad, roasted kale, and fresh herb pan jus. The Black Cypress is also known for its craft cocktails. theblackcypress.com. Pullman’s premier night club and lounge, opened in 2015, wanted to pay homage to its downstairs neighbor, Black Cypress, with its name. It offers a variety of craft cocktails and an Art Deco vibe. Think wallpaper, exposed brick, an eclectic vinyl record collection, and five crystal chandeliers, one of which came from the estate of actor Burt Reynolds. Highly recommended are the old-fashioned and other classics such as the Negroni, Manhattan, and Sazerac. Etsi Bravo also hosts comedy nights, deejay sets, themed nights, and more on the second story of a historical downtown building. Well done, indeed. etsibravo.com.

The Boz was a great guy; a good friend; a real character; a Hillyard kid who had the dream of having his own magazine, even running a neighborhood publication when he was just a boy. He made his dream came true, not with just one magazine, but several quality publications, local and statewide, plus events, venues, catering, and more. Vince’s greatest contribution was making Spokane proud of itself and bringing people together on a regular basis to celebrate our region. The magazines and events showed us how special, interesting, vibrant, and COOL we are. Vince “called them like he saw them” and wasn’t afraid to say so. “Lilacs and Lemons” gave him a chance to sound off. He’s a tough act to follow, as are the others who have kept the column going. It’s a real honor and privilege to sit in for Vince this month. LILACS for the Spokane Coeur d’Alene Living team who are keeping the dream alive every month, showing us what a fantastic place we are fortunate to live in. Thank you for your creativity, your fortitude, and your perseverance. And Lilacs as well to the advertisers for making it possible. LILACS to Mayor Nadine Woodward. When she was running for office I thought, “Oh no, we had a newscaster mayor once before, from the same station! And that didn’t turn out so well.” Nadine, on the other hand, has stepped up for her community big time, hitting the ground running, speed climbing a huge learning curve, and doing an outstanding job guiding us through unprecedented difficulties. Imagine what she can accomplish when she doesn’t have a Damn-demic to deal with. Thank you, Madame Mayor! LEMONS to ninety percent of the car, truck, and SUV commercials on TV. Amazon Praise Reveals Faulty Economic Development Goals 22
BOZZIMEDIA.com / OCTOBER 2021
In September, Amazon opened its second local distribution center, dubbed “GEG2.”
This warehouse, located in Spokane Valley, focuses mostly on larger products, like lawnmowers and patio furniture. Its grand opening was accompanied by a characteristically self-congratulatory press release from the company, noting its average starting wage of about seventeen dollars an hour and generous comprehensive benefits, including health insurance. Even local politicians and economic developers got in on the praise—like Ben Wick, Spokane Valley’s mayor, who noted that “Amazon brings great jobs with great pay and benefits as well as opportunities for longer-term careers.” Gary Ballew, VP of Economic Development at Greater Spokane Incorporated, said it may spur other e-commerce companies to move to the region. Of course, as with all economic development stories, it pays to dig a bit deeper. First, Amazon isn’t making these moves on their own––it’s receiving millions of dollars in public investment. In Spokane Valley, the company will benefit from more than twentysix million dollars in road improvements. In Airway Heights, the company received various
forms of subsidy––from transit extensions to road and sewer improvements. At the airport, the former West Plains PDA is even constructing and leasing an air cargo facility to the company. Second, remember what Ben Wick said about Amazon’s fulfillment jobs turning into long-term careers? The reality is much less positive. According to a Bloomberg investigation, similar jobs at unionized warehouses typically pay about double what Amazon pays. And Amazon promotes fewer of its employees—just a third of the average for the logistics industry. Even if you’re willing to accept those tradeoffs for the supposedly “higher wage” jobs that Amazon brings in, the investigation found that after the company locates in a community, compensation across the entire logistics industry in the area can fall by as much as six percent. Third, while Amazon may be adding one thousand jobs at “GEG2,” the company’s anticompetitive practices mean that those jobs may come at the expense of jobs at locally owned businesses. According to a survey from the Institute for Local SelfReliance, which researches the impacts of big companies on small business, fiftythree percent of small businesses face a significant negative revenue impact because of competition from Amazon. Even among businesses which sell on the platform–– who should be its biggest boosters—just eleven percent described their experience as successful. Over time, as these small businesses—beloved local institutions like Auntie’s or 4,000 Holes––face increasing pressure, they’ll shed jobs and revenue. Suddenly one thousand new Amazon jobs doesn’t sound like as much of a net gain. There is an alternative, of course. Local policymakers could prioritize helping local businesses grow, so they can hire more people and pay better wages. And when companies outside the region want to locate in Spokane, they could require certain actions from the employer—higher wages, better working conditions, prioritizing WMBE businesses as contractors and subcontractors—in exchange for road improvements and other subsidy. It probably won’t result in as many big-name headlines. But it would result in a more equitable, resilient economy in the long-term.

“The clock was ticking toward midnight,” says Bill Simer, a retired CPA and longtime Symphony board member who played a key role not only in keeping that wrecking ball at bay, but also in the thirty-one million dollar, seven-year transformation of the Fox, which took it from faded and forlorn movie palace to fabulous, state-of-the-art concert hall. Rescuing and restoring the theater, Bill says, “was something that simply had to be done, for the Symphony and for the community.” The Fox opened in 1931, part of the nationwide Fox film studio empire. It was designed by Robert C. Reamer, whose other notable Northwest works include the Chinese-inspired 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle and the Moorish Mt. Baker Theater in Bellingham, but who is perhaps best known as the architect of the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park. The exterior of Spokane’s Fox is handsome but restrained, barely hinting at the opulence inside, where Reamer, in collaboration with muralist Anthony Heinsbergen, created a whimsical Art Deco fantasy world for moviegoers. Depression-era audiences were eager for an escape into glamour and wonder.

The Tale of the Fox and the Symphony
A
by Michael Schmeltzer
fter months of eerie quiet, the elegant Art Deco auditorium of the Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox is open once again for music and more. The Spokane Symphony returned to the Fox stage in September, performing for a live audience in its home hall for the first time since the pandemic shut down everything in March 2020. A long list of other upcoming performances and events is on the books. That’s surely good news, but that’s not all: The Fox itself turns ninety years old on September 3, and that’s a milestone well worth celebrating— and not just because it once seemed certain that the old theater at the corner of Sprague and Monroe was doomed to a date with the wrecking ball. Instead, it turned out that the Symphony and the Fox may have saved one another, and along the way sparked new life into a decaying downtown neighborhood and breathed fresh energy into the city’s cultural vitality.

“The truth is, the Opera House was just never a good fit,” Jim says. “For the Symphony, the size was wrong, and the acoustics were wrong. Musicians didn’t like it and audiences didn’t really like it either.” Of course, a lot of things had to fall into place—quickly and consistently—to create this bit of civic kismet. Even after Bill convinced the would-be buyer to allow the Symphony to step in as the purchaser, there was still the matter of coming up with $1.2 million in just ninety days to consummate the deal. “Beyond support for the Symphony, people were aghast at the idea that the Fox could be torn down,” Jim says. “The community really got behind the fund-raising effort, but that was a huge ask with a very short deadline.” The final days of that fundraising period arrived with the Symphony barely halfway to its goal. Like a fairy godmother, local arts lover and philanthropist Myrtle Woldson quietly stepped in with a one-million-dollar gift to make the purchase possible. Bill and the rest of the Symphony board were of elated, of course, but there was another problem—and this one had a much higher price tag. “We had saved the Fox, but now we needed to fix the Fox,” Bill says. “Our best estimate was that restoration was going to cost thirty million dollars.” Woldson, who died in 2014 at the age of 104, contributed another two million dollars to ensure that the theater would carry the name of her late father, pioneer Spokane businessman 28

Martin Woldson. The Cowles family, which owns The Spokesman-Review and KHQ-TV, both neighbors of the Fox, also made significant donations. Bill and other fundraisers tirelessly pursued tax credit swaps for historic building rehabilitations and worked their connections for seven million dollars in local leadership gifts and another $8.2 million in state funding, finally turning the Symphony’s dream home into reality after seven long years. A lot of magic happened along the way, Bill says. “The original architectural plans for the Fox showed up one day. We discovered that the New York company that had done the original interior painting was still in business.” “It’s really astonishing that a symphony of this size in a city of this size was able to pull it off,” Jim says. “A lot of people doing a lot of difficult work got that done in the face of really long odds.” What’s more, the rebirth of the Fox, especially in tandem with the restoration and reopening a few years earlier of the nearby Historic Davenport Hotel, sparked a revitalization of a once-downtrodden part of downtown, where a strip of seedy bars and skid row apartments gave way to hip new hotels, entertainment venues, apartments, and restaurants. “The Fox became the anchor of Spokane’s entertainment district,” Jim says. Jeff vom Saal, executive director of the Symphony since 2016, calls the Fox “the cultural living room of the community”—a place not just for Symphony concerts, but for all types of music, for movies, meetings, graduations, weddings, and the like. Still, at its heart, vom Saal says, the Fox is “a beautiful concert hall with incredible acoustics that in itself is an exquisite instrument for our orchestra.” That instrument plays beautifully for others, too. Bill recently recalled a performance by Tony Bennett shortly after the restored Fox reopened in 2007. “After a couple of pieces, he stopped and said, ‘I want to thank this community. You have something really extraordinary here.’ And then he turned off his mic and he sang a cappella. The sound was incredible. In that moment, he made the case for everything we had done. It still gives me goosebumps.”

Every good thing must come to an end. Such is the sad truth that my time here in Spokane is ending, and it is time for me to start a new
chapter. For the past year, I’ve shared with you some of the books that I hold near and dear to my heart, and I hope that in some way these books have spoken to you, too. My goal was to prompt you, dear reader, with challenges—to read outside your comfort zones, hear from people who don’t look like you, don’t speak your languages, don’t act like you. I wanted to champion voices that are so often pushed to the margins or stifled by others. Many books I’ve provided over the year have been challenging, overwhelming, and heartbreaking. While the final books I will recommend to you may also prove to have these qualities, they also have cathartic endings. Not necessarily “happy,” but they leave you with a sense of resolution, or at least a feeling of completion and wholeness. All three of these books explore a coming to terms with one’s identity, and a journey of self-exploration and self-discovery. Readers, enjoy. It has been the most exquisite pleasure to be able to share with you.
The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen
This is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel following a young protagonist, Tiến, and his coming of age and selfdiscovery, alongside woven in fantasy tales and his mother’s experience immigrating to the US. Tiến finds comfort in literature, stories, and in his few friends that allow him to be his authentic self. Tiến struggles with the English to Vietnamese language barrier he has with his parents and wrestles with how he will tell his parents that he’s gay. Through the literature he reads almost nightly with his family and through the personal stories his mother recalls, Tiến is able to find the courage—and language—needed to share his truth. The illustrations in this novel are beautiful, full of color, and are colorized differently depending on whether the story is following present day Tiến, his mother’s past, or one of the fantasy tales Tiến is reading.
The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta
In The Black Flamingo, poems are interspersed throughout, however the entirety of the novel is written in a free verse, prose-like language so that it feels almost as if the entire novel is a poem. It’s a fast-paced read that takes you quickly throughout the adolescence and young adulthood of Michael—a black, Greek Cypriot, gay man living in the UK. It explores identity, Michael’s longing for an understanding of his culture and trying to fit in in a way that feels fresh and relevant. It is easy to become attached to the characters, as they are vibrantly described throughout and drive the story. I really enjoyed this YA and felt like it would have been beneficial for me to read when I was younger. 30

This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
I don’t often read sci-fi, but I’m so glad I picked up this book. While it took a while to get the hang of these universes and learn how to read the book, as soon as I did, I was completely sucked into the many worlds of Red and Blue. It is written partially in the epistolary style, with Red and Blue two writing letters back and forth to each other (and back and forth across time and space), interspersed with chapters of narration which ultimately give backstory into each character. This is How You Lose The Time War is the enemies-to-lovers trope reimagined and fresh. Their star-crossed romance feels tangible, heartbreaking, inevitable. This short novel is the perfect foray into science fiction/speculative fiction.

Love Awaiting Burial
by LeAnn Bjerken When she wants love she starts by filling up glass jars and burying them in the backyard at night like a desperate dog moving bare bones to safer places. She’s always on the hunt keeping her pantry well stocked with all manner of grave goods. She has a hankering for trust and faithfulness but her passion is a deep red wine with notes of chocolate. She spends every sunset in the kitchen whipping delight into foamy peaks throwing salt over her shoulder with a whispered kiss. 32
BOZZIMEDIA.com / OCTOBER 2021
She’ll fill each jar with pickled promises boiling off the excess desire leaving them to marinate in sweetness until they’ve set the smartly dressed, the freshly canned, awaiting burial.
She’ll lie beside them awhile holding her breath and pretending she’s in the ground too feeling the spell weave itself to life drawing from the dark, stirring the roots beneath.
Then she walks out to the field to dance and dig and chant while the moon spills down the clouds to blanket the open holes.
Originally from Minnesota, LeAnn Bjerken is a poet and writer who has called Spokane home for nine years now. She has an MFA in creative writing from Eastern Washington University, and previously worked as a journalist before turning her hand to freelance writing. Her poetry has appeared in Miracle Magazine, The Pacific Northwest Inlander, and online publications including; Devilfish Review, The Artistic Muse, The Lake, Fox Adoption Magazine, and Plants & Poetry Journal.
She covers each jar with crumbs from her hands and rakes the topsoil closed with her nails.

by Kiantha Duncan, Soulful Leadership Architect Kiantha Duncan is a lover of conversations, dinner parties, and mankind. As the woman behind “Conversations with Kiantha,” her passion is derived from helping others actualize their potential through conversations and the art of storytelling. She understands how one’s story can be a place for healing, finding common ground, and actualizing one’s full potential.
Fall has always been my favorite time of the year. The trees changing colors from bright greens to the warm yellows and oranges brings me a sense of hope. This time of the year is when I feel my most open and free to create. My spirit seems to know when fall has come. I see fall as a time to snuggle up and get close. Most importantly, fall carries me gently into the season of change. Just as we begin to add layers of clothing to keep us warm from the crisp air, we naturally long for the coziness that only connection brings. There is something about feeling warm and safe that our souls long for. As we move into this season of change, there is an invitation for us to shift our intentions, impact, and understanding of the world around us. How amazing would it be if we collectively leaned into and accepted this invitation? Our beliefs, views, and thinking are just a few of the areas that we should all be evaluating this fall season. Shedding beliefs that no longer serve us or ones which we’ve held
so tightly can be extremely scary. Change of any kind is frightening, yet our souls call for us to do our work. During this pandemic, we have certainly had our share of adversity. If it is true that in the face of adversity and catastrophe is where we find out who we really are, it is also in that space that we can be transformed to all that we imagine and hope to become in the next season of our lives. The clearer we see ourselves in this season, the clearer we see others and therein lies the transformation. Soulful living happens when we cozy up to the belief that there is always room to improve how we show up in the world and in this season our very survival depends on our ability to shed those things that no longer serve us and to connect. See yourself as the change that your family, workplace, and community need. Fear not and live SOULFULLY, —Kiantha

P
eople across the world have tackled immense challenges since the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic, from social isolation to financial burdens, in a distanced and digitally enabled world. As a result, many important projects were put on hold. But at the same time, many people took the opportunity to make bigger and better plans—and are ready to make these dreams a reality. In a recent global survey conducted by Project Management Institute (PMI), nearly four in five consumers (seventy-nine percent) said they consider 2021 to be a “do-over,” and eighty-six percent plan to work harder this year to bring their ideas to life. “The pandemic disrupted countless 2020 plans, but many leaders and innovative thinkers used the time wisely to map out their next moves,” says Mike DePrisco, chief operating officer for PMI. “As more communities and organizations across the globe cautiously turn to recovery and revival, teams are increasingly focused on turning their stalled projects into reality.” But turning ideas into reality doesn’t come easy. Whether you’re looking to level up in your career, kickstart a new project or create a completely new business, PMI outlines the power skills you need to continue advancing:
skills for successfully turning ideas into reality
1. Communication Effective communication maximizes success and minimizes risk. It involves not only conducting outwardbound communication, but also listening, taking feedback, understanding nonverbal cues, and interpreting what is meant versus what is said. In a team setting, communication helps team members stay on the same page as they work toward success. 2. Empathy Empathy allows team members to build greater trust and connections—with each other and with other stakeholders—by helping them understand the wide range of people and work styles they encounter. Empathy also strengthens teams by helping team members feel appreciated and heard.

3. Collaborative leadership A collaborative leadership style is more effective in inspiring and bringing team members together in pursuit of a shared vision and common goals. Collaborative leaders recognize that each member of the team has something to contribute—in executing a plan and in helping shape objectives. 4. Innovative mindset An innovative mindset ensures teams are applying new ideas and fresh perspectives to how they organize work and address the myriad obstacles that emerge when turning ideas into reality. An innovative mindset also allows teams to remain agile and pivot more quickly in the face of challenges. 5. Purpose-driven goals Having a for-purpose orientation helps minimize risks and ensures the organization’s values and commitment to social good are infused in all aspects of project design and implementation. Clear goals also empower changemakers to use their skills to bring about positive social change within teams, companies, and communities.
To learn more about these skills and effective project management, visit PMI.org/ MakeReality, a virtual hub of inspiration with the tools you need to get started on your next big, bold idea. Find support and inspiration from changemakers across the globe turning their ideas into reality; determine your changemaker persona; and view PMI courses that help you take your project or idea and Make Reality, such as KICKOFF, a free, forty-five-minute digital course and toolkit that guides learners through the basics of project management with bite-sized content and downloadable templates they can quickly implement on the job. —BPT

Today, BECU holds a two-billion-dollar presence in Eastern Washington, with 19,000 members and 300 employees in Eastern Washington and Idaho, ranking BECU in the top four credit unions in that geographic market. “People have really embraced the BECU brand and what we stand for, which is helping to improve the financial well-being of our members and communities,” Wanda says. “The alignment between BECU’s core values and the Eastern Washington community is what made this growth possible.”
BECU’s decision to base Wanda’s position in Spokane also demonstrates its commitment to growing in the region. She supports and operates the credit union’s events and sponsorships for all 56 of BECU’s locations across its footprint, three of which are in the Spokane area. She’s held this position for a year; prior she had held the position of branch manager for the Spokane Valley location. “It’s been an exciting opportunity. Not only is it fun to get out into the community, but it’s also rewarding to see the difference we’re making.” Wanda says. Another strong indication of BECU’s commitment is that it has invested in and established its only Home Loan Center in Spokane, which specifically focuses on educating and helping members through the home-buying experience. In just five years, BECU has impacted the community in substantial ways, supporting nearly $1.9 million in charitable giving and providing support to at least fifty organizations. On top of that, each NFC received an additional $25,000 budget to put toward community initiatives, such as local event sponsorships and support for food banks and other nonprofits making a meaningful impact. “Being held to our principle of people helping people, being in the community, and having that credit union feel has been a wonderful experience,” Wanda says. “People helping people is the credit union principle, and that’s what we really pride ourselves on.” As a proud Washington State University alumna, Wanda also loves BECU’s affinity relationship with the WSU Alumni Association. In that capacity, BECU supports alumni events, contributes to the scholarship program, and provides crucial financial education to both alumni and current students. BECU has also held similar financial education programs with SNAP.

Make Your Porch Welcoming
F
by Kim Mehaffey
all is my favorite time of year; it’s all about creating that warm and inviting space. I love to get out my crockpot and make a delicious comfort dish to share with friends and family. Because I love to entertain, part of my fall ritual is sprucing up my front porch to welcome guests. I have an artisan black bench made of whiskey barrels that stays on the porch year-round. Since my porch is covered, I decided to bring a little indoors to the outside this year. I wanted it to be cohesive

without overdoing it, so I chose a simple black and white theme. Part of the reason I choose this pallete was that I already had everything and only had to purchase a lavender plant and some small white pumpkins to pull it together. Because my husband was a firefighter and is always limiting my candle usage, I look for other ways to use my lanterns. So, in this instance, I simply stacked a couple of miniature white pumpkins on top of each other and loved the look of the matching matte black lanterns. The black and white striped pillow always grabs attention, and, in this case, I paired it with a simple little pillow with a cute message. The birch sticks bring in a natural element and frankly, they match my color scheme without spending anything. The area rug defines the space, just as it would inside the home. I pulled the wire spheres from my backyard and I love that this design element is unexpected. There is no right or wrong when outfitting your front porch. It only took me about an hour to get the look I wanted, and my process was the same as when I change anything inside the house. I could have added some fresh white mums as well, but the truth is that I do not have a green thumb and the life expectancy for flowering plants at my house is extremely short. Instead, I played to my strengths and kept the evergreen from summer and added the lavender in the black pot into my design. Again, try using what you have to create that warm, inviting entrance to your home. And remember, you don’t need to spend a fortune—play to your strengths. Cheers. grew up in this home, along with my mom and dad and two older brothers, an older sister, and my grandma,” says Dana Foster, who owns this 1906 Corbin Park craftsman with her husband, Kevin. Dana’s grandmother purchased the home in the early 1940s, and over the past eight decades it’s continued in its role as a beloved shelter for the family. “This house has always been filled with laughter and love and really positive vibes,” says Dana. “It’s just had a history of happiness,” for her immediate family—and the extended one as well. “When you live with your grandma, everybody

The goal was to create a more open space that felt updated yet timeless. “The rooms were really charming and cozy with really classic architecture, but they were pretty compartmentalized,” says Dana. They wanted to retain the home’s integrity while creating a functional, family-friendly floor plan that worked for them as well
as their visiting kids, grandkids, and greatgrandkids. They hired Shaleesa Mize of Pacific Design Co. as their interior designer and Tim Solodyankin with Solo Homes as their contractor.

“Shaleesa kind of blew our minds by saying, ‘We’ll just make this whole thing a wet room.’” This clever solution means the showerhead is placed in the center of the room, and there’s also space for the original clawfoot tub, now reglazed. “We would never, never have thought of [the wet room], but it’s fantastic,” says Kevin.
Dana and Kevin has found it immensely helpful to work through the design of the entire home with professionals. “Shaleesa and Tim really made it doable because we could never have figured this out on our own,” says Dana.

The shared family history with the home has meant a lot to Shaleesa as well. “We discovered this family connection shortly after starting the design project,” she says. “The most interesting thing about designing for this home was how easily the design concept came to me—almost as if the perfect pieces were finding us and intuitively I just knew they were the right choices.” “The special part about the whole design process was incorporating historical pieces from the home into its new design. It was important to keep the family stories alive. Refinishing pieces like the original clawfoot tub and the laundry basin sink are the same decisions that many people would have probably made. However, knowing that it was my own ancestors that once used these pieces to care for their families in this home over the last eight decades was very impactful and special.” The location of the home is also a meaningful part of its history. Kevin and Dana love living across from Corbin Park, watching the seasons cycle through the starker colors of winter, the burst of life in spring and summer, and fall’s vibrant colors. “We can rake leaves for months!” says Dana. “Every so often I think, I haven’t strayed too far from home. I’m still raking the same leaves I raked as a kid.” “The multigenerational aspect of things is really important to us,” says Kevin. The full-circle realization that they are now the grandparents and great-grandparents the extended family is coming to visit at this same home is not lost on them. “We don’t intend to move anywhere else, ever,” he says. “It’s really our forever home, and we hope it stays in our family,” says Dana. “When we’re long gone we want to imagine that the history of this home continues.”

There are many other effects, including dry skin and hair or faded clothing. Understanding your
Breast Cancer
RISK
I
n the US, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, the most common cancer among women. The fact is no one is immune from the effects of breast cancer. Even if you are lucky enough to never experience breast cancer yourself, chances are within your lifetime, you’ll know someone who has. Many women might only think about breast health after hearing news of a breast cancer diagnosis. Early detection is key to catching breast cancer or precancerous conditions when they are most treatable. Some risk factors can be controlled, and others cannot.

About thirteen percent of women diagnosed with cancer have a mother, sister, or daughter who has also been diagnosed with breast cancer. Additionally, women who have relatives with breast or ovarian cancer are at higher risk. You cannot change age or gender—the biggest risk factors—or your family history, including genetics. Some things that you can do to reduce your breast cancer risk are: Maintain a healthy weight Eat a healthy diet Do not use tobacco and limit alcohol Exercise regularly

Genetics: You cannot change your genes. About thirteen percent of women diagnosed with cancer have a mother, sister, or daughter who has also been diagnosed with breast cancer. Additionally, women who have relatives with breast or ovarian cancer are at higher risk. With every additional family member diagnosed before menopause, this risk increases. If this is the case for you, consult with your physician or a genetics counselor. Consider getting a baseline mammogram at least ten years before the age your family member was diagnosed. For example, if your mother was forty-five, your baseline mammogram should be performed at age thirtyfive. Self-Exam: Breast self-awareness is an important part of your health. You are the best judge of what’s “normal” when it comes to your own body. Monthly self-exams can keep you familiar with the look and feel of your breasts, making it easier to identify and share any changes with your primary care provider. There have been multiple studies that show it’s not important how you do a self-breast exam, so much as it is that you do it regularly. Screening: The American Cancer Society recommends that women at average risk for developing breast cancer get yearly mammograms starting at age fortyfive. Others recommend starting at age forty to fifty. The National Preventative Task Force recommends starting at fifty, and every one to two years thereafter. However, depending on your history, your physician may recommend you start screening at the age of forty. The problem is there is no absolute consensus. If you want to know if mammograms help you live longer, you must look at studies with mammograms done thirty years ago to know what will happen to you in thirty years. However, those mammograms are not as advanced as today’s. As imaging has improved, finding small tumors is more routine. We know that finding tumors smaller correlates with improved survival. There are many diagnostic tools available, but many consider digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography, to be the new standard of care. With 3-D mammography, images are produced from multiple angles using a digital scanner that rotates in an arc over the breast. This technology allows radiologists to move and enlarge images to better view any area of concern. This improves the detection of smaller breast cancers earlier and provides greater accuracy in distinguishing tumor size and location. If you minimize your cancer risk by practicing some principles, such as good nutrition, regular aerobic exercise, alcohol avoidance, and screening to detect a cancer as early and as treatable as possible, you will have the best chance of avoiding or beating breast cancer.

Finding a Gym or Workout You
Love 112
BOZZIMEDIA.com / OCTOBER 2021
Ann Foreyt (they/them) is a project manager by profession and a runner and CrossFit/HIIT enthusiast by passion. They also practice and teach aerial silks. Their goal is to make fitness accessible and enjoyable for all bodies and ability levels.
It sounds like such a simple thing: “Join a workout class!” or “Join a gym!” But is it really that easy? This month, let’s talk about how to find, try, and assess gyms and fitness classes. Not every class or gym is for everyone and being able to figure out what works for you, for your body, and with your goals, is important. For simplicity’s sake, from here on out, I will be using “gym” as a catchall to mean all classes, facilities, and modalities (group classes, personal training, online training, etc.). First, what are your needs in searching for a gym? Defining what it is you’re looking for and what your focus is can really help you narrow down your search.
Some questions to ask yourself:
Determine your preferred focus: Are you looking for a new experience or a challenge unlike anything you’ve previously done? Or are you looking for a return to something you already know? Alternately: Are you looking to focus on one activity or type of movement, or do you just want to have space to move your body somewhere that’s not your basement?
Most gyms offer intro series or classes that allow you to test out their offerings, but determining whether you’re looking for an everyday workout or something to challenge yourself with once or twice a week is important.
I know from personal experience that just because a gym or studio costs a lot, has a gorgeous and well-appointed space, or has a great social media presence, it doesn’t mean that it is automatically safer (either physically or emotionally) than a less Instagram-worthy option. Finding a gym, class, or instructor who both protects your body and makes you feel good about having shown up is imperative.
Determine your preferred modality: Do you want strict programming, or do you want to be able to do your own thing? Do you like the atmosphere of a group? Or do you prefer more one-on-one coaching? Some people thrive Dealing with the awkwardness of being the new in an environment where the workouts are always programmed kid: and there’s a coach or trainer that leads the majority of activity. Showing up for your first day of any activity can be intimidating. Others prefer less structure and enjoy being able to program for How can you reduce that “first day of school” feeling? themselves, or just do their own thing on a day-to-day basis. First, there’s a reason I mentioned emotional safety above. An I know that personally, I like the idea of being able to program instructor should always make you feel welcome, even on your for myself, but I see more improvement, and first day. Class one: I acknowledge that I am coming need to settle in. as a beginner, so all I might get out of this class And what’s the cost of not attending? Niche or discipline-focused gyms can be is an understanding of the space, a “feel” for the pricey, but even big-box spaces come with a class/instructor, and a basic comprehension of cost, especially when you choose to stop attending. Beyond just the class structure and/or skills. figuring out what makes sense for your budget, cost-wise, also Class two: I now know the space and the basic format of class, think about what type of pricing structure makes sense for you. so I can start discerning whether I actually enjoy this activity. Trying a third time allows me to test that talk about assessing the offerings at your chosen space. feeling.
Some considerations:
Safety (both physical and emotional): First and foremost, safety is key. Regardless of discipline, regardless of whether it’s a big-box open gym or an expensive boutique studio, safety and cleanliness should be a focus. Is the equipment well-maintained? Are there appropriate cleaning procedures in place and evident? In a trainer/coach/ instructor-led environment, are they coaching students on correcting and improving form? Are coaches encouraging and supportive in a way that feels beneficial to you?
Do I like it? Finally, just because something feels like a good workout doesn’t mean that it’s right for you. Did you enjoy it? Are you excited to come back? On days when you don’t really want to work out, will this still make you think, “Yeah, that still sounds fun”? A workout/ class/gym you’re not excited about, even if it’s something you feel like you should like, is one that you won’t stick with. Find the thing that makes you want to show up. Good luck finding a gym, a class, an instructor, or a movement-type that makes you genuinely happy to partake in. It’s out there, I promise! OCTOBER 2021 / BOZZIMEDIA.com

or me, fall isn’t complete without that "sticks to my bones and warms me to my soul" feeling. What says fall more than pumpkins and squash? Japanese curry is so popular in Japan that it could be their national dish. It varies from other curries with the addition of a dark roux, which adds a nutty spice that matches perfectly with the kabocha squash. The squash itself is sweeter and a bit nuttier than a pumpkin. This year, when you’re at Green Bluff picking out your carving pumpkins, grab a kabocha squash and try something new.

Prep kabocha by cutting off the top, scooping out the seeds and insides, including the top. Coat the inside of the kabocha with half the oil and 1 tbsp (or to taste) curry powder and salt. Place on a lined cookie sheet and set aside. 3. Add the remainder of the oil to a medium frying pan and preheat the pan on medium-high. Season the chicken with 1-2 tbsps of the curry powder or to taste. Add to the pan and brown on all sides. Remove from pan and place inside the squash. 4. Add onions to the frying pan with the chicken drippings. Cook on medium until soft but not browned, and then add carrots and green beans. Cook until all veggies are soft but not browned, remove from the pan, and add into the squash. 5. To the frying pan, add the chicken stock, cooking wine, and curry cubes. Whisk on medium low until the curry cubes are dissolved and sauce is starting to thicken, assuring it is lump-free. Taste the sauce and, if need be, add a bit more curry powder. 6. When you’re satisfied with the taste of the sauce, add to the squash. You may need to add chicken stock to cover the chicken and veggies. Place the top of the squash and filled squash into your oven, preheated to 425°. Cook for ninety minutes, or until the chicken reads an interior temperature of 160° and the squash is cooked through. 7. To serve, place the squash into a dish that can hold the sauce. You can scoop out the curry while scooping some of the squash, but my preference is to cut the squash into wedges. Serve with rice and garnish with cilantro.

Every coffee joint has the standard bakery fare, but at Ladder, you can also indulge in amazing breakfast options.
Eastward & Upward
Ladder Coffee & Toast won my heart as soon as it opened a Spokane Valley location. I’ve
lived in Valley communities for sixteen of my twenty-three years in the Inland Northwest, and while I understand the Valley may lack the charm of some other neighborhoods, more businesses and residents would do well to embrace opportunity in the oft-avoided easterly side of our county. (Free and easy parking, anyone?). But that isn’t what this column is for, so let’s get down to coffee. Owner Aaron Rivkin opened his first Ladder location downtown on the edge of Browne’s Addition in a 1904 apartment building begging for new life. Its chic, modern space fits the bill for the feel Aaron says he wanted to achieve: a “living room” atmosphere. With bright walls, ample windows, and plants draped across shelves, it does possess an inviting vibe. The smell of bread in the bakery across the hall adds a feeling of home. Barely after opening the first shop, a second and unique opportunity arose. As Spokane Federal Credit Union began its rebranding as Canopy, it sought to reach a younger population of banking customers. Inspired by the example of Capital One Cafes, Canopy and Ladder created a mutually beneficial relationship in a shared facility. The East Sprague location in the Valley opened at the unfortunate timing of pandemic restrictions, but eastside residents (at least my husband and I) vowed to keep them going. This fall, Canopy and Ladder opened another location, this time on the Northside. One might think that the atmosphere of a coffee shop connected to a financial institution could be rather cold or corporate. While the comfy couches and bright colors of the downtown Ladder shop give way to more formal black and white designs in the Canopy business setting, the friendly environment on any given day could include a gathering of moms with young children, or a mild-mannered service animal resting by a student typing away on a laptop. In other words, a standard coffee shop ambiance. Ladder’s new headquarters and primary roasting and training facility fall somewhere in

the middle of those spots, taking over the former Vessel coffee shop on North Monroe. As for the coffee itself, Aaron partners with Onyx Coffee, which specifically supports economic development in Guatemala, and Red Fox Coffee Merchants, known for its quality sourcing from throughout the coffee belt in Central and South America and Africa. Aaron says Ladder shops offer two types of roasts—the “approachable” 509 seasonals and the Expo ’74 blend, and what he calls the “wild” options for those with more adventurous palates.
EXTENDING FURTHER
Aaron intends for Ladder to keep climbing, expanding beyond Spokane and into the larger markets of Seattle, L.A., and his hometown of Phoenix. The brand is already experiencing wide exposure through nationwide distribution of its canned cold brew—available in original, single origin, and nitro. In Spokane, pick it up at My Fresh Basket.
LET’S TALK FOOD
Every coffee joint has the standard bakery fare, but at Ladder, you can also indulge in amazing breakfast options. The classic avocado toast is a strong contender, but if you want something different, try the waffles, available in sweet or savory selections. While my heart remains in the Valley, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention a visit to the Browne’s Addition location may score you extra points with your partner or friends. The bakery across the hall—Rind and Wheat – will have something special to take home. Grab a baguette or focaccia, and ask the turophile (cheese connoisseur) for details on the many European cheeses available. Great coffee, fresh bread, and amazing cheese in one place? Trifecta.

October is synonymous with Harvest Festival at Green Bluff. Luckily, I live a mere six-minutedrive from this autumnal mecca, so weekday foodie tour enabled me to avoid weekend crowds. Armed with my camera, a couple fancy plates, and a photo backdrop, my friend Lindsay and I hit the road to find the best sweet, savory, and boozy offerings.
SWEET What is Green Bluff in October without the long lines for Beck’s Harvest House pumpkin donuts? The donuts—made from scratch every weekend using an award-winning family recipe and served warm with a dusting of cinnamon sugar—live up to the hype. Harvest House’s other sweets at their Country Kitchen include saucer-sized cinnamon rolls, huckleberry cheesecake, ice cream, and their house-made cherry pie. A little off the beaten path, you will find Hidden Acres Orchard, where you can buy jams and jellies, jars of pickled veggies, and locally harvested produce and eggs. They have a shack where you can buy mini-pumpkin donuts made in-house every weekend, but the sweetest surprise we found were their blackberry and apple hand pies that were perfectly sized
and easy to hold while picking apples and pumpkins at their orchard. Right across the street is Walter’s Fruit Ranch, which has a huge selection of readyto-bake frozen pies. You can also purchase slices to eat at their Orchard Cafe. We went for the huckleberry-apple pie a la mode, a uniquely Inland Northwest flavor combination. We also shared an order of their famous bacon bacon bacon cheeseburger, a little savory break well worth it. New to Green Bluff is a family-owned-andoperated confectionary called Sweet Stuff Creations at Halbig Family Farm. Owners Richard and Erica Halbig bought the farm almost two years ago and set out to create their own line of caramels, chocolates, and brittles, using locally sourced ingredients. Their caramels and chocolates are the only ones of their kind in the area, and they are great for snacking and gift-giving.
SAVORY Also new, Lexi Westover and her father, Bert, bought the old Siemers Farm early this year (keeping its original name) and opened up Siemers Castle Pizza over the summer. For the first time, people can now enjoy pizza at Green Bluff during Harvest Festival. We ordered the “Whole Farm” pizza,

Country Store, you can order their famous paninis from their Bistro & Deli counter at the back. Their tomato pesto panini is especially delicious, paired with some fries and slices of peach.
LIBATIONS For those of you twenty-one and over, Green Bluff has a growing number of places that offer wonderful libations. On weekends at
with pepperoni, sausage, onions, green peppers, and olives, washed down with Inland Cider Mill’s Strawberry Rhubarb hard cider, made with Siemers’ famous candy-sweet Benton strawberries. You can also order croissant sandwiches, macarons, and other baked goods as well as specialty coffees from miFLAVOUR, at their popup shop at Siemers Farm this season. While shopping with your friends at High Country Orchard’s

Townshend Cellar, sit on the patio or their indoor tasting room and pair their wine flights with design-your-own-charcuterie ingredients. You can also purchase wine by the glass or take an entire bottle (or six) home to enjoy later. Big Barn Brewing has live music and food trucks every weekend, so you can relax with friends over pints of beer (most of which are made with local hops grown in their backyard).
If hard cider is more of your style, you can head to Twilight Cider Works’ tasting room and sample a variety of their pressed hard ciders, made with fruits grown at various Green Bluff farms. Twilight’s cider tasting only costs five dollars (to try five different ciders), and includes a souvenir glass. You can also sample mead flights at Hierophant Meadery while petting adorable animals in their backyard sanctuary. Mead is wine

made with honey, and Hierophant’s meads are concocted with as much local honey as they can source. Hierophant’s rotating list of seasonal flavors—like the popular Harry-Potter-inspired Butterbee—can be sampled in their tasting room as part of their eight-dollar flight or be enjoyed by the glass. On a non-boozy note, take home a gallon or two of seasonal apple cider. Swing by Hansen’s Apple Orchard for their famous apple cider to-go, made with as many apple varieties as available. Don’t forget a jar of Karen Hansen’s famous chunky applesauce. I hope that you find this list helpful and that it inspires you to go off the beaten path to support some smaller farms.

CLARKSVILLE/rocket man
clarksville by Doug Clark
Doug Clark is a Spokane native and lead singer/ songwriter for his band, Trailer Park Girls. He recently retired from The Spokesman-Review after writing three columns a week for more than 30 years.
2021
A SPACE ODDITY That’s one small step for a band; one giant boost to my self-esteem. --
Apologies to Neil Armstrong, but I’m over the Moon thanks to my recent rocket ride into Lower Space. And it’s all because of a Spokane stained glass artist with a rather eccentric hobby. David Glass builds high-power rockets (“like model rocketry, only bigger”) and sends them soaring into the heavens. When stars and legalities align, naturally. Glass, bless his soul, is also a loyal Clarksville fan. This superior personality trait led him to construct a rocket with a trailer-shaped nose cone. He christened it “Trailer Park Girl” in honor of my band—Trailer Park Girls. Glass then sent me an email asking if I’d like to witness the rocket’s maiden flight. Would I? Does Luke Skywalker have daddy issues? “I’m speechless,” I told Glass. “This honor is, well, overwhelming.” Glass originally planned to send our baby aloft during the spring of 2020. But then— cue the Vader theme—that infernal virus called Covid intervened. 128
BOZZIMEDIA.com / OCTOBER 2021
Aw, say it ain’t so. Close Disneyland, if you must. Shut down baseball and schools and the NBA. But ground Trailer Park Girl? What manner of monster are we dealing with!?! And so, the days and months passed in a depressing slog, until… Saturday morning last Labor Day weekend. I met the white-bearded Glass on a grassy rural field a few miles north of Pasco. Welcome to Sod Blaster 2021, an annual festival of rocket firing sponsored by the Tri-Cities Rocketeers. My lovely wife, Sherry, and I scooched into our pickup and drove 134 miles to this sod farm in Franklin County, not knowing what to expect. To be perfectly honest, I envisioned a dozen old geeks in sandals jawboning about Klingons and, you know, space stuff. Boy, was I wrong. I pulled my truck off Sagemoor Road and found a parking spot at the end of a long
line of RVs, campers, and cars. Well, whattaya know. There were more rocket men here than at a convention of Elton John tribute acts. Women and kids, too. And rockets. Short rockets. Skinny rockets. Flying saucer rockets. A pig-themed pink rocket. One sixfooter was fashioned into a perfect replica of a copper-jacketed rifle cartridge. But a trailer? Ha! Only one three-foot, eightinch rocket had the Right Stuff in that department. What a fascinating scene. Venders selling rocket motor reloads. A guy passed me wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with “Rocket Scientist @ Work.” I stood and watched as Glass opened the trunk of his rental sedan. He pulled out Trailer Park Girl, which he had painted a lovely mid-century turquoise and white. Glass grew up in California. He said he loved rocketry as a kid, fashioning his first ones out of cardboard toilet paper tubes. There was a time when he considered physics as a career. Then came a satori moment of enlightenment. Assessing his pocket protector-wearing classmates, Glass thought: “Who are these people and what am I doing with them?” Glass is an artist at heart. And, ironic name notwithstanding, he found his calling working with glass. He opened a stained glass studio not long after migrating to Spokane in 1977. I tagged along as Glass toted Trailer Park Girl to a table for registration. “Is that a parking meter?” asked Marty Weiser, quickly adding, “No. No. It’s a trailer.” “That’s a creative take right there,” complimented Rich Harshberger. As we learned from space shuttles Columbia and Challenger, plenty can go wrong with a rocket launch. Rocketeers have their own Urban Dictionary to cover a variety of mishaps, said Glass. Say a rocket topples over and zooms off horizontally. Call that a land shark. Or maybe a rocket makes a loop and
Clark’s humor and general-interest commentaries have won scores of local, state and regional honors along with three awards from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. He can be reached at dougclarksville@gmail.com.
plows straight into the earth. “A lawn dart,” explained Glass with a chuckle. Failure to launch is probably the most common problem. Mercifully, there are pills to help with that. Another concern stems from the ol’ “what goes up must come down” truism. These rockets shoot so high that it’s sometimes difficult to keep track and the Lost in Space syndrome sets in. A middle-aged rocketeer passed me muttering that he’d “walked seven miles” in a vain search for the rocket he’d set off a day earlier. I knew exactly how he felt. Once while playing golf, I managed to lose five balls and a 7 iron—on ONE HOLE!! Hmm. I suddenly began to entertain dark thoughts about how such a personalized launch could turn out to be an even bigger embarrassment than the time I tried to nominate myself for a Pulitzer. On second thought, however, there’s no honor for the chickenhearted. We are living in the Golden Age of space privatization, after all. And I’m proud to add Clarksville to the ranks of Elon Musk, Richard Branson, and that greedy Amazon dickweed, Jeff Bezos. I followed Glass to the rows of launchpads and helped him position Trailer Park Girl onto a yellow metal stand. Number 24. Glass had already inserted a lengthy tube of solid propellant up the rocket’s, um, wazoo. Sorry to be crude. But when it comes to rocket lingo, I don’t know azimuth from Asimov. One of the final procedures was to hook a wire from the rocket to a junction box that linked to Mission Command: a lone announcer sitting under a canopy. Once that was done, we wandered back
to mingle amid the rocket gawkers. “This is the largest turnout I’ve ever seen here,” Glass observed. No kidding. A post-event Sod Blaster wrap-up revealed “a record-shattering 610 flights for the weekend!” These Tri-Cities Rocketeers know how to host a helluva sky party. One by one, the rockets for our round of liftoffs were introduced by name and builder before being counted down from five. And one by one, each rocket took off with varying degrees of smoke, speed, and vroom. Finally, the big moment arrived. Announcer Dude read the following from a paper Glass had prepared as a surprise.
“This flight of Trailer Park Girl is in honor of Doug Clark who recently retired as a columnist for The Spokesman-Review, having written for the paper since its founding in 1894,” the man said. A year or two off on the math. But I can live with that.
Announcer Dude continued: “He is the shining star of the band Trailer Park Girls, which was the inspiration for this rocket.” Five. Four. Three. Two… Loud roar. Trailer Park Girl shot up high enough to finally prove the Flat Earth Theory, becoming a mere flyspeck set against the blue clear sky. I had planned to snap an iPhone photo of Trailer Park Girl leaving Earth. Houston, we have a reflex problem. By the time I touched the shutter all I managed to document was a wispy column of gray smoke. Glass the rocket builder knew what he was doing. High in the sky, a small burst of smoke signified the separation of nose cone from rocket body, exactly as planned. Down the nose floated gently thanks to a bright yellow parachute. A red chute did the same for the tubular body. In my excited state I lost track of both parts. Good thing keen-eyed Sherry was there to follow TPG to terra not so firma. A short walk later, Trailer Park Girl was put back together and looking no worse for gravitational abuse. As a token of kindness, my affable new friend gave me his rocket to keep. How cool is that? Thank you, David. And rest assured, Trailer Park Girl will join my ’55 Seeburg jukebox, Expo ’74 coffee maker, ’51 Telecaster, and all the other treasures in the Museum of Clarksville Keepsakes.
