Table of Contents

We have programmed an incredible array of films dealing with complex subjects: politics, activism, the environment, family dynamics and of course, love. On that subject, we celebrate the most famous family in America in our opening night film, ETHEL, directed by Rory Kennedy, and we are honored to have members of the Kennedy family here for the screening. Throughout the weekend we invite you to take a small risk and see a film you wouldn’t normally see, while enjoying the films that speak to your heart. Every year during the selection process, a theme begins to emerge. This is the year of the artist. We are so proud to present the documentaries about Ai Wei Wei, Marina Abromovic, and Gregory Crewdson, and we are thrilled to be one of the only festivals to have both Marina and Gregory attending their screenings in person. Wow! As I have always said, the BIFF does not happen without a great deal of dedication and support from many people, and I would like to thank everyone who has joined the REEL Friends Film Society, which has allowed us to be a year-round organization hosting monthly events for our film society with prerelease screenings, receptions with filmmakers and special events. In addition, a great many people have spent the entire year helping to bring this celebration to our community. I must thank my incredibly dedicated board of directors, my staff Lauren and Sarah, my kids, the endless, selfless efforts of the advisory board and programming producers, the generous support and loyalty of our sponsors, the energy and spirit of our volunteers, my PIC and the Triplex and Beacon staff, the Mahaiwe staff as well as the towns of Great Barrington and Pittsfield and the support of the merchants, restaurant-owners and selectman from both towns. This year I would also like to thank the Academy of Motion Pictures for Arts and Sciences for their support through the funding of the Filmmaker Summit and the terrifically, diverse industry professionals and filmmakers who were able to attend our inaugural year. BIFF recognizes the hard work and dedication it takes to be a filmmaker, and we celebrate the stories they share with us, So… let’s celebrate another great year at the BIFF! See you at the movies!

As the BIFF kicks-off the cultural season in this dynamic and engaged community, we are proud to once again bring the world to your doorstep. Every year people come up to me and say “I love reading a New York Times review about some amazing film coming to town, and I can say… I already saw it at the BIFF.” For everyone who works so hard on this festival those are gratifying words. Over the last year, our board and programming committee have pored through hundreds of films from around the world and selected what we think are the best in narrative, documentary and short filmmaking this year.

ETHEL is a feature-length documentary about the remarkable life of Ethel Kennedy, told by those who know Ethel best: her family. Directed by her EmmyŽ Award-winning daughter, Rory Kennedy, the film features candid interviews with Ethel and seven of her children. The film is a personal portrait of Ethel’s political awakening, the life she shared with Robert F. Kennedy, and the years following his death when she raised their 11 children on her own. Intimate, funny, and deeply moving, ETHEL offers a rare look inside a political dynasty strengthened by family bonds, a compassion for others, and a wisdom forged from both hardship and triumph. The film is scheduled to be seen on HBO in 2012.

Seductive, fearless, and outrageous, Marina Abramović has been redefining what art is for nearly forty years. Using her own body as a vehicle, pushing herself beyond her physical and mental limits––and at times risking her life in the process––she creates performances that challenge, shock, and move us. Through her and with her, boundaries are crossed, consciousness expanded, and art as we know it is reborn. She is, quite simply, one of the most compelling artists of our time.

Elevating traditional documentary techniques with an artistic gloss befitting its subject, MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ THE ARTIST IS PRESENT is by no means a typical “art film.” With total access granted by Abramović and The Museum of Modern Art, MARINA ABRAMOVIĆ THE ARTIST IS PRESENT is instead a mesmerizing cinematic journey inside the world of radical performance, and an intimate portrait of an astonishingly magnetic, endlessly intriguing woman who draws no distinction between life and art.

Acclaimed photographer Gregory Crewdson doesn’t just “take” his images, he creates them, through elaborate days and weeks of invention, design, and set-up. The epic production of these movie-like images is both intensely personal and highly public: they begin in Crewdson’s deepest desires and memories, but come to life on streets and soundstages in the hills towns of Western Massachusetts. In his decade-long project “Beneath the Roses” he uses light, color and character to conjure arresting images, managing a crew of 60 amidst seemingly countless logistical and creative obstacles.

SUNday, 9:00AM - Triplex #1 Writer: Hubert Delarue | Serge Frydman | Vincent Garenq | Alain Marécaux Director: Vincent Garenq Cast: Philippe Torreton | Wladimir Yordanoff | Noémie Lvovsky

This film tells the story of Alain Marécaux, “the bailiff,” and his terrible ordeal in the Outreau affair. He and his wife were arrested in 2001 with 12 other people for horrible acts of paedophilia that they never committed. It’s the story of an innocent man’s descent into hell faced with an incredibly unjust and inhuman judicial system. It’s the story of his life, and the life of his loved ones, heartlessly crushed by one of the most important judicial errors of our time.

Saturday, 2:00PM - Triplex #1 SUNday, 4:00PM - Beacon #5 Writer: Sarah Koskoff Director: Todd Louiso Cast: Melanie Lynskey | Blythe Danner Christopher Abbott | John Rubinstein

Selected as the opening night film for Sundance 2012, HELLO I MUST BE GOING features acclaimed actress Melanie Lynskey (WIN WIN, UP IN THE AIR, TWO AND A HALF MEN) in her breakout role as Amy, a recent divorcée who seeks refuge in the suburban Connecticut home of her parents (Blythe Danner and John Rubinstein). Demoralized and uncertain of her future, Amy begins an affair with a 19-year-old actor (GIRLS’ Christopher Abbott) that jumpstarts her passion for life and helps her discover an independence and sense of purpose that she has missed for years. Coupling Danner’s subtly riveting performance as a frustrated empty nester with Lynskey’s endearing and nuanced depiction of both the comic and tragic avenues of an existential crossroads, HELLO I MUST BE GOING is a modern, unconventional love story infused with sex, humor, and emotional honesty – everything Amy will need to get on in life.

Sunday, 9:15PM - Triplex #2 Writer: Paul Hengge (screenplay) | Wolfgang Murnberger Director: Wolfgang Murnberger Cast: Moritz Bleibtreu | Georg Friedrich | Ursula Strauss

MY BEST ENEMY takes its place in the great tradition of the comedies of Ernst Lubitsch and Charles Chaplin, but always remains realistic and deals not with artificial characters, but with genuine people. Murnberger succeeds in relating the story of a long-lasting friendship against the background of the Nazi era – a friendship that never quite totally disappears in spite of everything. When Victor sees that Rudi has also survived the plane crash, he is upset, since he knows that he doesn’t have the heart to kill Rudi. The film also relates a love story that is emotionally gripping without ever being sentimental. Lena feels abandoned by Victor; she would have fled to Switzerland with him, but he rejected this idea. He feels it’s more important that she stay in Austria and watch over the family property in Vienna. When Rudi asks her to marry him, she cannot refuse without risking the loss of the property.

Candice Lecoeur is a local beauty, gracing the famous ”Belle de Jura” cheese packaging, who has gotten it into her head that she might well be the reincarnation of Marilyn Monroe. The two will meet in the coldest village in France, but only after Candice has been found dead. The case was closed before it even opened and the cause of death declared suicide by sleeping pills. Rousseau is the only one who doesn’t buy it. Reality turns out to be stranger than fiction – and a source of inspiration – as Rousseau uncovers the truth about Candice’s past and her untimely death. Making the transition from still photography to video, New York artist Martine flies to LA to finish her latest work. Upon the recommendation of a friend, the headstrong young woman takes up residence in a wealthy family’s Silver Lake home to record audio under the guidance of Hollywood sound designer Peter. Although Martine is focused and determined to finish her piece, her arrival creates tension in the family, as Peter’s wife, Julie, becomes aware of her husband’s lingering glances toward their alluring guest and Martine’s presence causes Julie’s teenage daughter Kolt to begin investigating her own influence over the opposite sex. While many films have examined the ways in which the introduction of a stranger changes the dynamics within a family, Ry Russo-Young and cowriter Lena Dunham focus their attention on how this change affects the stranger, the catalyst for the various awakenings in the people around her.

Director Chris Kraus presents the masterly portrait of a segment of civilization and humanity sliding into chaos and anarchy. Shot on the Baltic coast in and around a spectacularly precarious mansion, the film features a gallery of superb actors, led by the radiant young breakout star Paula Beer.

Writer/Director: Lynn Shelton Cast: Emily Blunt | Rosemarie DeWitt | Mark Duplass | Mike Birbiglia

From award-winning filmmaker Lynn Shelton (HUMPDAY), this film is a tale of grief, romance and sibling rivalry that continues to showcase Shelton’s extraordinary ability to portray human stories with remarkable humor, sensitivity and warmth. A year after his brother Tom’s death, Jack is an emotionally unstable slacker. When he makes a scene at a memorial party, Tom’s ex-girlfriend Iris offers up her family cabin on an island in the Pacific Northwest so Jack can seek catharsis in solitude. Once there, however, he runs into Iris’ sister Hannah, a lesbian reeling from the abrupt end of a seven-year relationship. Emotional performances from an all-star cast, Shelton once again honestly explores the complexities of interpersonal relationships while gently poking fun at her characters’ predicaments.

As part of The Mount’s ongoing celebration of Edith Wharton’s 150th birthday, we are please to present a free screening of Terence Davies’ adaptation of The House of Mirth. Considered by many Wharton’s most important work, The House of Mirth, published in 1905, tells the story of Lily Bart, a beautiful woman of limited means living in a society that she describes as a “hot-house of traditions and conventions.” Tempted by luxury and practicality, Lily plans to marry a rich heir but her morality interferes, and so begins her downfall. The House of Mirth reveals the consequences of Lily’s choices. Davies both wrote and directed the 2000 film which stars Gillian Anderson, Eric Stoltz, and Laura Linney. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called the adaptation outstanding and a “… picture with more sinew and power than almost any other period drama of recent times. It gripped me like a thriller throughout...”

A Fierce Green Fire US | 2011 | 120 min

Film in Juried Competition

Friday, 1:45PM - Triplex #2 Saturday, 11:30AM - Beacon #4 Based on the book by Philip Shabecoff Director: Mark Kitchell ProducerS: Mark Kitchell | Marc N. Weiss

A FIERCE GREEN FIRE: The Battle For a Living Planet is the first big-picture exploration of the environmental movement—grassroots and global activism spanning fifty years from conservation to climate change. From halting dams in the Grand Canyon to battling 20,000 tons of toxic waste at Love Canal; from Greenpeace saving the whales to Chico Mendes and the rubbertappers saving the Amazon; from climate change to the promise of transforming our civilization, the film tells vivid stories about people fighting — and succeeding—against enormous odds. The film focuses on activism. It’s about movements more than issues. It’s a more engaging approach, full of drama and passion. It’s also a more open-ended approach than cant and rant. We emphasize synthesis, bringing together all the pieces of the environmental picture to explore connections, resonance, larger visions and deeper meanings. Never has a film told the full story of environmentalism. Our hope is it will be a defining film that reaches and teaches a huge and hungry audience. FILMMAKER IN ATTENDANCE

Named by ArtReview as the most powerful artist in the world, Ai Weiwei is China’s most celebrated contemporary artist, and its most outspoken domestic critic. In April 2011, when Ai disappeared into police custody for three months he quickly became China’s most famous missing person, having first risen to international prominence in 2008 after helping design Beijing’s iconic Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium-and then publicly denouncing the Games as party propaganda. Renowned artist and dissident Ai Weiwei has waged an uncompromising battle against censorship and authoritarian government using imagination, skill and the social media of the day. This up-close, riveting look at the artist and rebel is a persuasive portrait of today’s China and the union of art and politics in a globalized age. English subtitles

In 2008, a baby girl is born in Bhopal, India, the site of the worst industrial disaster in history: the Union Carbide gas leak. What should be a celebration is a tragedy. She has severe birth defects due to the contaminated water, but the American company that’s responsible still refuses to make amends 24 years after the incident. Award-winning director Van Maximilian Carlson paints a chilling portrait of shattered lives such as hers, and the gross negligence and class disparities that keep them from finding justice, safety and peace of mind.

In the turbulent 1960’s, an ordinary man rose to face extraordinary challenges. Pat Brown’s granddaughter and award-winning Director, Sascha Rice, gives an inside look into political power and a family dynasty called by some “the West Coast Kennedys.” This premiere account of former Governor Pat Brown’s life takes on startling new significance now that his son, Jerry Brown is Governor of California – again. An exciting tale of the West comes into focus as the filmmaker wrestles with the inherited optimism of her grandfather’s legacy. The documentary gracefully pivots from a tumultuous decade in American history to the contemporary challenges that California faces today. This dynamic American Dream story follows the journey of a man overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles to shape the future of modern California.

In the spring of 2005, National Geographic™ photographer James Balog headed to the Arctic on a tricky assignment: capture images of glaciers and help tell the story of the Earth’s changing climate. Despite his scientific upbringing, Balog was a climate change skeptic and a cynic about the nature of academic research. That first trip north opened his eyes to one of the biggest stories in human history and sparked a challenge within him that would put his career and his very well-being at risk. The story spawned a much larger and longer-term project that would reach epic proportions for Balog. Part adventure, part environmental activism, and full of gorgeous photography unlike anything seen before, CHASING ICE is a one-of-a-kind documentary that both celebrates the beauty of our world and raises important issues of what is happening to it.

ESCAPE FIRE: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare tackles one of the most pressing issues of our time: what can be done to save our broken medical system? The film examines the powerful forces trying to maintain the status quo in a medical industry designed for quick fixes rather than prevention, for profit-driven care rather than patient-driven care. After decades of resistance, a movement to bring innovative high-touch, low-cost methods of prevention and healing into our high-tech, costly system is finally gaining ground. ESCAPE FIRE follows dramatic human stories as well as leaders fighting to transform healthcare at the highest levels of medicine, industry, government, and even the US military. The film is about a way out. It’s about saving the health of a nation.

In the dark days of 1987, the country was 6 years into the AIDS epidemic, a crisis that was still largely being ignored until the sudden emergence of the activist group ACT UP in Greenwich Village, largely made up of HIV-positive participants who refused to die without a fight. Emboldened by the power of rebellion, they took on the challenges that public officials had ignored, raising awareness of the disease through a series of dramatic protests. They became recognized experts in virology, biology, and pharmaceutical chemistry. Their efforts would see them seize the reins of federal policy from the FDA and NIH, force the AIDS conversation into the 1992 presidential election, and guide the way to the discovery of effective AIDS drugs that stopped an HIV diagnosis from being an automatic death sentence and allowed them to live long lives. The film captures both the joy and terror of those days, and the epic day-by-day battles that finally made AIDS survival possible.

Jon Shenk’s The Island President is the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced—the literal survival of his country and everyone in it. After bringing democracy to the Maldives after thirty years of despotic rule, Nasheed is now faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most lowlying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable. Despite the modest size of his country, Mohamed Nasheed has become one of the leading international voices for urgent action on climate change. Discussion to Follow

In Joe Papp’s eyes, art is for everyone, not just a privileged few. Perhaps best known for giving a voice to future Broadway successes like Galt MacDermot (Hair) and Michael Bennett (A Chorus Line), Joe began as a radical. An active communist who concealed his Jewish heritage for most of his life, Joe’s private world was just as theatrical as his public one. In 1956, it was Joe who declared that theater should be a free enterprise, “like the library,” and put on his first Shakespeare production of Taming of the Shrew in Central Park to a packed audience of every ethnic and socioeconomic background in the city. An indomitable, streetwise champion of the arts, Joe reimagined King Lear as African-American and Edmund with a thick Puerto Rican accent, bringing more theater to more people than any other producer in history. Co-produced with American Masters and featuring Meryl Streep, Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen, Kevin Kline, James Earl Jones, and more, Joe Papp in Five Acts reveals Joe’s greatest accomplishments and tumultuous personal history according to the artists he helped create—and sometimes tried to destroy.

The Queen of Versailles is a character-driven documentary about a billionaire family and their financial challenges in the wake of the economic crisis. With epic proportions of Shakespearean tragedy, the film follows two unique characters, whose rags-to-riches success stories reveal the innate virtues and flaws of the American Dream. The film begins with the family triumphantly constructing the biggest house in America, a 90,000 sq. ft. palace. Over the next two years, their sprawling empire, fueled by the real estate bubble and cheap money, falters due to the economic crisis. Major changes in lifestyle and character ensue within the cross-cultural household of family members and domestic staff.

A recent USA Today study shows that 40% of US adoptions are transracial. While the dialogue on race in the United States is evolving, opposing sides continue to debate the benefits of tranracial adoption. Color Blind looks at the aftermath and follows two families with differing views. Just one year after their adopted son Luc arrives from Haiti, the Garwood family is establishing their own roots in a predominantly African-American neighborhood in South Los Angeles. Parents Allison and Reed, a white couple, immerse themselves in black culture through church and a strong circle of friends, but they can’t escape the opinions of the outside world. The Garwoods are joined by the Howertons, a multi racial family with two adopted boys. Color Blind provides an intimate glimpse into the experience of families who have adopted across cultural and racial lines.

The sisters are determined to give local women who are losing their hair, eyebrows and eyelashes a sense of normalcy and dignity in a traumatic and uncertain time. What starts as a quirky film about what hair means to us in our culture evolves into a deeply nuanced, funny and painful film about womanhood and marriage. Academy Award winning director (and full-time Berkshires resident) Cynthia Wade returns to BIFF for a third time with an unexpectedly uplifting story about hair, love and determination. Sunday, 12:00PM - MAHAIWE Writer/Director: Michel Ocelot Cast: Julien Beramis | Marine Griset | Michel Elias

Tales of the Night is renowned animation auteur Michel Ocelot (Kirikou and the Sorceress, Azur & Asmar)’s first foray into 3D animation. A hit at the Berlin Film Festival, the film extends the earlier shadow puppet style of Ocelot’s Princes and Princesses, with black silhouetted characters set off against exquisitely detailed Day-Glo backgrounds bursting with color and kaleidoscopic patterns – the subtle use of 3D creating a diorama-like effect. The film weaves together six exotic fables each unfolding in a unique locale, from Tibet, to medieval Europe, an Aztec kingdom, the African plains, and even the Land of the Dead. In Ocelot’s storytelling, history blends with fairytale as viewers are whisked off to enchanted lands full of dragons, werewolves, captive princesses, sorcerers, and enormous talking bees - and each fable ends with its own ironic twist. recommended for ages 7 to adult English subtitles | some mild adventure violence
