Welcome to the 8th annual Berkshire International Film Festival. I am thrilled at the incredible array of films and events we are bringing to our community this year and look forward to sharing a festival that will entertain, challenge, engage, inspire and amaze all of us. One of the things I love about the BIFF, is the diversity of films that our filmmakers bring to the Berkshires, and each year we cultivate film from around the world to reflect our ever-changing, ever-growing, and ever-hopeful global community.
Table of Contents
I am excited to kick-off this years’ Festival with the documentary TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM, which also opened Sundance this year. This wonderfully crafted documentary looks at the numerous, talented, and mostly unsung backup singers who have performed onstage with some of the last fifty years’ biggest names in music, from Sting and the Rolling Stones to Bruce Springsteen and the Talking Heads. We are also thrilled to welcome the incredible Darlene Love to the Mahaiwe on Opening Night. The BIFF will host a very special screening and panel discussion around the powerful film GIRL RISING. In cooperation with the Interdependence Movement and 10x10, GIRL RISING, is a groundbreaking film, directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Robbins, which tells the stories of 9 extraordinary girls from 9 countries, written by 9 celebrated writers and narrated by 9 renowned actresses, including Meryl Streep, Kerry Washington, Anne Hathaway, and Freida Pinto. An engaging discussion will follow the film with a notable group of political, media and cultural figures who are both well known nationally and committed to the cause of girls’ education. BIFF will close with the highly anticipated new film from director Noah Baumbach, FRANCES HA, starring the delightful and talented Greta Gerwig. We are pleased that Noah Baumbach will be in attendance for a Q&A moderated by artist Gregory Crewdson. As always, I want to thank the dedication of the BIFF board, the sponsors, the staff, the community, the volunteers and of course, the filmmakers. I would like to dedicate this years’ Festival to the memory of our dear friend and colleague Ken Regan, the legendary photographer, whom we lost last fall. He was a huge fan of the BIFF and a founding board member. Ken lead an extraordinary life and was one of the most incredible and prolific photographers of his time, documenting the behind-the-scenes magic of some of the great moments in boxing, rock and roll, television and film. We were fortunate to have him as part of the BIFF family, so please, join me in celebrating his extraordinary life and his legacy - his was a life well lived. So let’s kick-off another wonderful cultural season in the Berkshires, and I look forward to seeing you at the movies!

Part psychological thriller and part provocative character study, A TEACHER explores the unraveling of a young high school teacher, Diana (Lindsay Burdge), after she begins an affair with one of her teenage students, Eric (Will Brittain). What starts as a seemingly innocent fling becomes increasingly complex as the beautiful and confident Diana gets fully consumed by her emotions, crossing boundaries and acting out in progressively startling ways. Lindsay Burdge delivers a deeply compelling and seamlessly naturalistic performance that brings us into the mind of an adult driven to taboo against her better judgment. FILMMAKER IN ATTENDANCE

When, one day, Skunk discovers her bitter and angry older neighbor, Mr. Oswald, savagely beating Rick, a psychologically-troubled boy from the neighborhood whom Mr. Oswald’s daughter has callously and fictitiously accused of rape, Skunk’s innocence begins to vanish. Jamie is a boorish, insensitive American twentysomething traveling in Chile, who somehow manages to create chaos at every turn. He and his friends are planning on taking a road trip north to experience a legendary shamanistic hallucinogen called the San Pedro cactus. In a fit of drunkenness at a wild party, Jamie invites an eccentric woman—a radical spirit named Crystal Fairy —to come along. What is meant to be a devil-may-care journey becomes a battle of wills as Jamie finds himself locking horns with his new traveling companion. But on a remote, pristine beach at the edge of the desert, the magic brew is finally imbibed, and the true adventure begins. Die Welt is the debut of Dutch-Tunisian director Alex Pitstra. We follow Abdallah, a young DVD salesman from Tunis, who starts dreaming of a better life in Europe, or Die Welt, as his father calls the other side of the Mediterranean. The film is based on Pitstra’s own observations in Tunisia, the land of his father, which he was unfamiliar with for the first 25 years of his life. With fresh cinematic audacity and convincing performances, including his own father, Pitstra paints an engaging picture of daily life in post-revolutionary Tunisia.

As the two brothers vocally face the questions they have about mortality, they simultaneously hold their own silent debates within their minds that build into seemingly insurmountable moral peaks. In September 2011, The Occupy Wall Street movement propelled issues of economic inequality into the spotlight. 99% - The Occupy Wall Street Collaborative Film goes behind the scenes of the movement, definitively revealing what happened, and why. Personal stories imbue analysis of big picture issues with the real-world struggles of those compelled to take action, speak up, march, and risk arrest and brutality at the hands of oppressive police forces around the country. Supporters, participants, experts and critics shed light on why and how this movement took off with such explosive force, and ask what the next phase might encompass. Made in a unique and unprecedented collaboration of almost 100 filmmakers across the country, the production process of this feature film offers a uniquely diverse way of bringing context to the movement that has swept up America, and much of the world, with its story. Since the assassination of Dr. George Tiller in Kansas in 2009, only four doctors in the United States continue to perform third-trimester abortions. These physicians, all colleagues of Dr. Tiller, sacrifice their safety and personal lives in the name of their fierce, unwavering conviction to help women. But for some in the pro-life movement, these doctors are “murderers” who must be stopped. Offering audiences an unprecedented perspective, After Tiller is an intimate look into each of the four physicians’ private and professional struggles. Decades after Roe v. Wade legalized abortion, the issue remains one of the most volatile in our public sphere. After Tiller sensitively and artfully extricates the controversy from the ideological realm and humanizes those who have been demonized. FILMMAKERs IN ATTENDANCE

Many of us have experienced the excitement and awe of watching 8,000-pound orcas, or “killer whales,” soar out of the water and fly through the air at sea parks, as if in perfect harmony with their trainers. Yet, in our contemporary lore this mighty black-and-white mammal is like a two-faced Janus—beloved as a majestic, friendly giant yet infamous for its capacity to kill viciously. Blackfish unravels the complexities of this dichotomy, employing the story of notorious performing whale Tilikum, who—unlike any orca in the wild—has taken the lives of several people while in captivity. So what exactly went wrong? This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.

Casting By puts the spotlight on filmmaking’s unsung heroes – the casting director – and takes us on a fast-paced journey through the last half century of Hollywood history from an entirely new perspective. Pioneers like Marion Dougherty and Lynn Stalmaster were iconoclasts whose exquisite taste and gut instincts helped to put the final nail in the coffin of the old studio system and usher in the New Hollywood with movies like Midnight Cowboy, The Graduate, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Afforded the unprecedented freedom and power of the new medium of television, they broke away from the traditional typecasting of Hollywood and brought a new kind of leading man and leading lady to the screen (Actors like James Dean, Dustin Hoffman, Bette Midler, Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman, et al). Tom Donahue combines personal narratives from countless actors and directors with extensive archival material to reconstruct the untold tale of Hollywood’s most invisible and unheralded profession. Flex Is Kings documents the hopes and realities of the under-acknowledged and totally unfunded group of Brooklyn artists behind the urban dance movement called “Flexing.” Despite high crime rates and few educational or job opportunities, a large and growing group of young men is resisting gang life to pioneer a form of narrative dance that tells the story of their streets. “Flex” is the name of the dance style. Filmed over two years, Flex Is Kings, offers rare access to the emotional journey of several young dancers as they each vie for a chance to make something of themselves by battling it out through this DIY art form. Structured around a season of “Battlefest,” the central organizing event of the flex movement, the film captures a world of discipline, sacrifice, disappointment and exhilaration.

Freda Kelly was just a shy Liverpudlian teenager when she was asked to work for a local band hoping to make it big. Though she had no concept of how far they would go, Freda had faith in The Beatles from the beginning, and The Beatles had faith in her. History notes that The Beatles were together for 10 years, but Freda worked for them for 11. Many people came in and out of the band’s circle as they grew to international stardom, but Freda remained a staple because of her unfaltering loyalty and dedication. As the Beatles’ devoted secretary and friend, Freda was there as history unfolded; she was witness to the evolution – advances and setbacks, breakthroughs and challenges – of the greatest band in history. In Good Ol’ Freda, Freda tells her stories for the first time in 50 years. One of few documentaries with the support of the living Beatles and featuring original Beatles music, the film offers an insider perspective on the beloved band that changed the world of music. Recounting the deadliest day in modern mountain climbing history, in August of 2008, 22 climbers from several international expeditions converged on High Camp of K2, the last stop before the summit of the most dangerous mountain on Earth. 48 hours later, eleven had been killed or simply vanished into thin air. Like a horror movie come-to-life, it was as if the mountain began stealing lives, one climber at a time. The Summit puts the audience in the boots of those facing life and death decisions on the mountain and shows how a band of like-minded adventurers can be torn apart by the elements and the glory at hand.

In the summer of 2008, a small group of civilians ran 4,000 miles across America. They called themselves Run for the Fallen, and their mission was to run one mile for every service member killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Jon Bellona founded the Run in memory of his best friend and college roommate, 1st Lt. Michael J. Cleary of Dallas, PA. Michael was killed on December 20, 2005, while serving in Iraq. He was 24 years old. Jon put together a team comprised of Mike’s fiancée, sister, and other friends. They did not run for or against the war, and refused any political affiliation. The Run began in Fort Irwin, CA, and ended in Arlington National Cemetery, VA, ten weeks later. The team marked each mile with an American flag and personalized memorial card in honor of each fallen service member, and these cards were made by students from all across the U.S. Along the way, the runners met many others who had lost their own loved ones, and who came out to participate in this moving memorial. In February 2008, a classroom shooting shattered the coastal, working-class town of Oxnard, California. As the community reeled and the national media descended, a 15-year-old lay dead and his 14-year-old attacker awaited trial for murder. Was this a hate crime, retaliation for unwanted playground flirting or something more complex? Through interviews, cinéma vérité footage and the examination of details and documents leading up to and including that fateful day (later brought into trial), filmmaker Marta Cunningham unravels the multifaceted human narrative that links Larry and Brandon. Both were troubled individuals growing up in difficult homes. The film raises key questions facing schools and communities all over the country: what do you do to help kids like Brandon and Larry before violence occurs—and what do you do after you’ve failed?

Venus and Serena takes an unfiltered look into the remarkable lives of the greatest sister-act professional tennis has ever seen. In a sport where they were not welcomed, the indomitable Williams sisters faced the opposition with grace and courage not only breaking new ground for female and African American athletes everywhere, but dominating the women’s game for over a decade. The film tells the inspiring story of how these two women, against all odds, but the help of visionary parents, made it to the top.

Friday, 11:15Am - TRiplex #2 Director/ProducerS: Jenni Gold
From the early days of silent films to present day, from Chaplin to X-Men, disability portrayals are ever changing. This dynamic documentary will take a detailed look at the evolution of “disability” in entertainment. Our indepth investigation will go behind the scenes to interview Filmmakers, Studio Executives, Film Historians, and Celebrities, as well as utilize vivid clips from Hollywood’s most beloved motion pictures, television programs, and commercials to focus attention on the powerful impact that entertainment and the media can have on society. Do disability portrayals in the media impact society or does the media simply reflect our ever-changing attitudes? In this important documentary we will see if media has had a hand in transforming the societal inclusion of the disabled and determine if an enlightened understanding of disability can have a positive impact on the world. and other cures for debilitating self-esteem issues, he moved to Los angeles to become a screenwriter. After serving time as a studio story analyst at MGM and Tri-Star, he got his first screenwriting assignment re-writing Revenge Of The Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise. For some reason, a period of unemployment followed the release of this sweeping epic, but during his ample free time he came up with the idea for Rookie Of The Year. The release of that movie was followed (a mere 10 years later) by Just Married, Cheaper by The Dozen, Cheaper By The Dozen 2, Open Season, Housebroken and Rio. During that time he also worked on Night At The Museum, The Little Rascals, Dunston Checks In, Fat Albert, Like Mike, Aliens In the Attic, Garfield, Marmaduke and Ice Age 2 for which he received no on screen credit. But he’s not bitter about that. Really. He’s not. Sam is currently finishing a young adult novel, producing a low budget independent feature and happily preparing to return to New York. Chris Noth CHRIS NOTH is an accomplished graduate of the Yale School of Drama that continues to build upon a versatile career in film, television and on stage. Among his credits are two of the most successful series in television history: “Law & Order” and “Sex and the City.” Noth originated the role of Mike Logan on the first five seasons of “Law & Order” and then reprised the role on “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” He shared two SAG Award nominations for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series with his fellow cast members. For his portrayal of Mr. Big in HBO’s “Sex and the City,” Noth earned a Golden Globe nomination. His performance as Peter Florrick in the CBS drama “The Good Wife” earned him a Golden Globe nomination as well as two SAG Award nominations for Outstanding Ensemble. In addition to “The Good Wife,” Noth can be seen in the upcoming feature
