FILMS
GENERAL INFO AND MAPS
As we explored the variety of film being produced this year, it became evident that the filmmaker’s stories are reflective of our times…they are political, environmental, socially active and inspirational. The films are also full of passion, music, humor and love. Come journey with us as we travel to Germany, Egypt, Spain, Iran, Iraq, Syria, France, England, Sweden and Israel, as well as to US cities and small counties… bringing the world to the Berkshires.
BIFF will close with the highly acclaimed SXSW hit, LUCKY starring the superb Harry Dean Stanton and directed by actor-turnedfilmmaker John Carroll Lynch. The film also stars David Lynch and Tom Skerritt.
The festival opens with an incredible, inspiring documentary film STEP! This film was an instant hit at Sundance and will bring us all to our feet. At it’s Sundance premiere, a Variety review wrote, “It’s rare for a documentary to inspire applause during the feature, but there you have the power of Amanda Lipitz’s STEP, an inspiring crowd-pleaser that provides a positive look at the lives of every day teens in Baltimore… STEP is a universal story of triumph.” Opening night festivities include a cocktail party followed by a dinner/dance party for pass-holders catered by Rita Welch Catering at St. James Place, sponsored by the Jane Iredale Companies. BIFF will open at the Beacon in Pittsfield with the witty and wonderful THE TRIP TO SPAIN with comedy buddies Steve Coogan and Rob Bryden as they eat their way through the cultural landscape of Spain. The opening night will begin with a party at Hotel on North followed by the presentation of the EIGHTH annual “Next Great Filmmaker Award” sponsored by Berkshire Bank – you can cast
Founder and Director
BIFF is extremely proud this year to pay tribute to the iconic and legendary Academy Award winning actor, Christopher Plummer for his remarkable Achievement in Film. We are honored to pay tribute to this extraordinary actor for his body of work he has left behind him and for the creative peaks he continues to climb. The Special Event festivities include a cocktail party and dinner-by-the-bite for pass-holders catered by MAX Ultimate Food at St. James Place, sponsored by GWFF.
In addition to the films, BIFF will host some special events throughout the weekend including GWFF USA’s Juried Prize Award for narrative and documentary filmmaking, free family film screenings, panel discussions and “Tea Talks” with HBO’s Sheila Nevins, Karen Allen, and Paul Krugman, and a special screening with Jacob’s Pillow. I want to thank everyone that has joined and continues to support the REEL Friends Film Society...it is vital to the organization and allows us to bring the best film to the BIFF and throughout the year. I must thank my incredibly dedicated and generous board of directors, Lauren and the festival staff, the endless, selfless efforts of the advisory board and programming producers, the generous support and loyalty of our sponsors, the energy and spirit of our volunteers, the Triplex and Beacon staff, the Mahaiwe staff as well as the towns of Great Barrington and Pittsfield and the support of the merchants, restaurant-owners and selectman of both towns. So, leave your passport at home because BIFF will bring the world to you! Join me as we kick-off another wonderful cultural season in the Berkshires and let the cameras roll!

THE REEL FRIENDS It has been quite a year for the REEL Friends with a record number of monthly screenings and events. No matter where we fall on the political spectrum, we come to understand that film and the stories that are told, are one of the most important ways to bring our world together. Every year, as we select and curate a world-class film festival from around the globe to bring to you, we understand this more deeply. By becoming a REEL Friend, your donation supports this important work and the stories that are taking place around the world. The stories that must be told. You support our two-day Filmmaker Summit. Bringing expert guidance and advice from industry professionals to our aspiring filmmakers, as they make their mark in the world. Thank you for understanding the role that films play in our lives. And the importance of supporting this film festival through the REEL Friends, that brings the films and often the filmmakers right to your doorstep. BIFF would not be what it is, without your support!

STEP US, 2016, 83 min. STEP chronicles the senior year of a girls’ high-school step dance team against the background of inner-city Baltimore. These young women find a unity through their team that pushes them to challenge themselves on and off the stage. Empowered by their teachers, teammates, counselors, coaches and families, they chase their ultimate dreams: to win a step championship and to be accepted into college. This all female school is reshaping the futures of its students’ lives by making it their goal to have every member of their senior class accepted to and graduate from college, many of whom will be the first in their family to do so. Emotionally inspiring, STEP embodies the true meaning of sisterhood through a story of courageous young women worth cheering for. Director // Amanda Lipitz Producers // Steven Cantor, Amanda Lipitz

In reviewing his memoir, In Spite of Myself, Alex Witchel for the New York Times writes “...In spite of himself — his relentlessly high artistic principles; his penchant for playing the underdog, even when he was the star; his keen ear, equally attuned to the precision of Elizabethan verse and to what passes as truth across a whiskey at 5 a.m. — this man has experienced a life rich in textures, and he is able to give most of them glorious voice. His is a life in the theater lived hard and true, in the grand tradition of those distinguished players who went before, whom he has surely made proud.” The Berkshire International Film Festival is proud to honor Christopher Plummer with a Lifetime Achievement Award for the body of work he has left behind him and for the creative peaks he continues to climb.

And if awards were given for living life to its fullest, Christopher Plummer would have
run out of clever acceptance speeches by now. A legendary rake. A lustful lush. A classical musician. An adroit raconteur. A world traveller. The drinking buddy of Peter O’Toole and Albert Finney. He has known, loved, drunk, acted and/or brawled with everyone who is anyone in the past seventy years of international celebrity.
BIFFMA.ORG
It would be easier to list the awards Christopher Plummer hasn’t won in his nearly seven decades of work in film, television, stage and concert hall. Multiple Tony awards, Emmy awards, the Golden Globe, the Genie, Screen Actor’s Awards, Canada’s Companion of Honor, countless Film Critic honors, nominations too numerous to mention, and of course an Academy Award have been earned for a body of work that is nothing less than an encyclopedia of the arts in the 20th and 21st Centuries. From his breakout role as Captain Georg von Trapp in The Sound of Music, Mr. Plummer has inhabited Oedipus, Rudyard Kipling, the Archduke Ferdinand, Sherlock Holmes, Mike Wallace, Santa Claus, Aristotle, Julius Caesar, Leo Tolstoy, Ebenezer Scrooge, Hamlet, Don Juan, F.D.R., F Lee Bailey, Iago, John Barrymore and King Lear… as well as fictional villains, scientists, thieves, doctors, bankers and, in his Oscarwinning role in The Beginners, a widower who at age 81 takes his first steps out of the closet and finds love. The New York Times called him “the finest classical actor of North America.”
A riveting World War II thriller that is filled with espionage and romance in equal measure, THE EXCEPTION follows German soldier Stefan Brandt (Jai Courtney) as he goes on a mission to investigate exiled German Monarch Kaiser Wilhelm II (Christopher Plummer). The Kaiser lives in a secluded mansion in The Netherlands, and as Germany is taking over Holland, the country’s authorities are concerned that Dutch spies may be watching the Kaiser. As Brandt begins to infiltrate the Kaiser’s life in search of clues, he finds himself drawn into an unexpected and passionate romance with Mieke (Lily James), one of the Kaiser’s maids whom Brandt soon discovers is secretly Jewish. When Heinrich Himmler (Eddie Marsan), Head of the SS, decides to come for an unexpected visit with a large platoon of Nazis in tow, the stage is set for a breathtaking showdown, as secrets are revealed, allegiances are tested, and Brandt is forced to make the ultimate choice between honoring his country and following his heart.

UK, 2017, 110 min. After jaunts through northern England and Italy, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon embark on another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. This time around, the guys head to Spain to sample the best of the country’s gastronomic offerings in between rounds of their hilariously off-thecuff banter. Over plates of pintxos and paella, the pair exchange barbs and their patented celebrity impressions, as well as more serious reflections on what it means to settle into middle age. As always, the locales are breathtaking, the cuisine to die for, and the humor delightfully devilish. BAR BAHAR (IN BETWEEN) Israel, 2016, 100 min. Lalia (Mouna Hawa), Salma (Sana Jammelieh), and Nur (Shaden Kanboura) share an apartment in the vibrant heart of Tel Aviv. Lalia, a criminal lawyer with a wicked wit, loves to burn off her workday stress in the underground club scene. Salma, slightly more subdued, is a DJ and bartender. Nur is a younger, religious Muslim girl who moves into the apartment in order to study at the university. Nur is both intrigued and intimidated by her two sophisticated roommates. When her conservative fiance visits, he is horrified by her secular friends, entreating her to hasten their marriage, leave Tel Aviv, and assume her rightful role as a wife. She refuses, and his violent rebuttal leaves all of the women shaken. Salma and Lalia also face turmoil: Lalia has found love with a modern Muslim man whose acceptance proves less than unconditional, and Salma discovers that her Christian family in a northern Galilean village is not as liberal as they claim. These three very different women find themselves doing the same balancing act between tradition and modernity, citizenship and culture, fealty and freedom. THE HERO stars the legendary Sam Elliott as an aging actor confronting mortality in the moving new film from writer/ director Brett Haley (I’LL SEE YOU IN MY DREAMS). Lee Hayden (Elliott) is a Western icon with a golden voice, but his best performances are decades behind him. He spends his days reliving old glories and smoking too much weed with his former-co-star-turned-dealer, Jeremy (Nick Offerman), until a surprise cancer diagnosis brings his priorities into sharp focus. He soon strikes up an exciting, contentious relationship with stand-up comic Charlotte (Laura Prepon), and he attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Lucy (Krysten Ritter), all while searching for one final role to cement his legacy. THE HERO is a beautiful and poignant celebration of life and the legacies we all leave behind.
Tehran’s air pollution has reached maximum levels because of thermal inversion. Unmarried 30-something Niloofar lives with her aged mother, and stays busy with her alterations shop. When doctors insist that her mother must leave smoggy Tehran for her respiratory health, Niloofar’s brother and family elders decide that she must also move away to accompany her mother.
Born in the American Midwest, nothing in her background destined farm girl Loïe Fuller to become the toast of Europe’s Belle Epoque cabarets, even less to dance at the Paris Opera. Hidden behind metres of silk, her arms extended by long wooden rods, Loïe reinvents her body on stage and enthralls her audiences a little more every night with her revolutionary Serpentine dance. Dazzling the Capitol, she becomes an icon, the blazing symbol of a generation. Eminent admirers fall at her feet: Toulouse-Lautrec, the Lumière Brothers, Rodin. Even if the physical effort risks destroying her back, even if the glare of the stage lights sears her eyes, she will never falter in the quest to perfect her art. But her meeting with Isadora Duncan – a young prodigy hungry for glory – will lead to the downfall of this icon of the early 20th Century… The remarkable destiny of a modern woman who revolutionized her era. The news breaks that Wallonia, Belgium’s southern half, has declared its independence. The King, bursting with purpose, must return home at once to save his kingdom. And for once, he declares, he will write his own damn speech. As they rally to depart, a solar storm strikes the earth causing communications to collapse and airspace to shut down. No phones. No planes. To make matters worse, Turkish security coldly dismisses the King’s suggestion they return home by road. But the King has no intention of waiting out this storm. Lloyd, sniffing an opportunity of historical proportions, hatches a dubious escape plan that involves flowery dresses and singing Bulgarians.

MENASHE
MERCENARY
France/Belgium, 2016, 85 min.
US, 2017, 81 min.
France, 2016, 110 min.
Filmed in Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon’s signature whimsical style, LOST IN PARIS stars the filmmakers as a smalltown Canadian librarian and a strangely seductive, oddly egotistical vagabond. When Fiona’s (Gordon) orderly life is disrupted by a letter of distress from her 93-year-old Aunt Martha (delightfully portrayed by Academy Award® nominee Emmanuelle Riva) who is living in Paris, Fiona hops on the first plane she can and arrives only to discover that Martha has disappeared. In an avalanche of spectacular disasters, she encounters Dom (Abel), the affable, but annoying tramp who just won’t leave her alone. Replete with the amazing antics and intricately choreographed slapstick that has come to define Abel and Gordon’s work, LOST IN PARIS is a wondrously fun and hectic tale of peculiar people finding love while lost in the City of Lights.
Set within the New York Hasidic community in Borough Park, Brooklyn, MENASHE follows a kind but hapless grocery store clerk trying to maintain custody of his son, Rieven, after his wife, Lea, passes away. Since they live in a tradition-bound culture that requires a mother present in every home, Rieven is supposed to be adopted by the boy’s strict, married uncle, but Menashe’s Rabbi decides to grant him one week to spend with Rieven prior to Lea’s memorial. Their time together creates an emotional moment of father/son bonding, as well as offers Menashe a final chance to prove to his skeptical community that he can be a capable parent.
A young man of Wallisian origin in New Caledonia defies his father to go and play rugby in France. Living on his own on the other side of the world, he learns there is a price to pay to find success.

Shot in secret entirely within the Hasidic community depicted in the film, and one of the only movies to be performed in Yiddish in nearly 70 years, Menashe is a warm, life affirming look at the universal bonds between father and son that also sheds unusual light on a notoriously private community. A film inspired by the life and work of Nelly Arcan. The portrait of a fragmented woman, lost between irreconcilable identities: writer, lover, call girl and star. Several women in one, navigating between great exaltation and great disenchantment. A film mirror of a violent life and a radical work; a tribute to a dense writing, chilling and necessary.
As India, the world’s largest democracy, braces itself for another general election with 9 million polling booths, more than 800 million voters, and costing nearly $5 billion - Newton Kumar, a rookie government clerk finds himself entrusted with a task that appears deceptively simple: conducting elections in a remote village in the jungles of central India.

US, 2016, 108 min.

Chile, 2016, 90 min.
PATTI CAKE$ introduces Australian native Danielle Macdonald in a breakout role, as aspiring rapper Patricia Dombrowski, a.k.a. Killa P, a.k.a. Patti Cake$. Fighting an unlikely quest for glory in her downtrodden hometown in Jersey where her life is falling apart, Patti tries to reach the big time in the hip hop scene with original and affecting music. Cheered on by her grandmother (Cathy Moriarty) and only friends, Jheri (Siddharth Dhananjay) and Basterd (Mamoudou Athie), Patti also shoulders her mother’s (Bridget Everett) heartaches and misfortunes.
This movie, set in the 19th and 20th Centuries, follows the life of the German artist Paula Modersohn-Becker. It especially focuses on her most productive years in Worpswede (Germany) and Paris (France). One central topic is the discrimination of women in the world of art, while the story also follows Modersohn-Beckers’ relationships with other artists and poets of her time, friends and family.
Since their parents split up, Sara and her younger sister lived with their mother, whose new partner is a woman. Everyday life for the four of them is very similar than it is for other families. The situation is actually totally fine with Sara. But not everyone sees it that way – her father in particular has his doubts. As Sara’s 13th birthday approaches, she feels rather overwhelmed: her first crush, her body is starting to change and to top it all off, conflicts over loyalty with her parents… Everything feels wrong.

An accident during a bar mitzvah celebration leads to a gender rift in a devout Orthodox community in Jerusalem, in this rousing, good-hearted tale about women speaking truth to patriarchal power. Charismatic young Rabbi David appears to be a savior after the accident, but slowly starts pushing his fundamentalist ways and tries to take control. Thirty years ago, a group of improbable heroes came together on a mission that was both medical and moral, and, by everyone’s estimation other than their own, highly unlikely to succeed. Their goal was simple but daring: to make highquality healthcare available to everyone, even in the world’s poorest countries. Fighting entrenched diseases, political and bureaucratic machinery, and the charityindustrial complex itself, these crusaders forced the international community to embrace the idea that healthcare must be a basic human right in every society, and went ahead to provide it. In doing so, they have changed the lives of millions of people across the globe. Told through interviews, rare archival material and onthe-ground contemporary footage featuring Dr. Paul Farmer (legendary founder of Partners In Health), Dr. Jim Yong Kim (maverick President of the World Bank), and Dr. Agnes Binagwaho (controversial Health Minister of Rwanda), the film is an emotionally charged, dramatic and inspiring journey with these brilliant and headstrong heroes. BUGS Netherlands, 2016, 80 min. Insects as food is a hot topic. Particularly over the last few years, since the UN recommended edible insects as a resource to combat world hunger, they have been heralded for their taste by cooks and gastronomes, for their low ecological impact by environmentalists and for their nutritional content by public health scientists. It would seem that insects are the new superfood that will fix all our problems of global food security. For the past three years a team from Copenhagenbased Nordic Food Lab made up of chefs and researchers Josh Evans, Ben Reade and Roberto Flore have been travelling the world to learn what some of the two billion people who already eat insects have to say. In BUGS, film director Andreas Johnsen follows them as they forage, farm, cook and taste insects with communities in Europe, Australia, Mexico, Kenya, Japan and beyond. During their journey they encounter everything from revered termite queens and desert-delicacy honey ants to venomous giant hornets and long-horned grasshoppers, trapped using powerful floodlights, that sometimes cause their catchers temporary blindness. Are insects a mirror that reflects our broken food systems, or the silver bullet that will fix them?

For Lorenzo Pisoni, growing up as the golden child in the cult classic comedy troupe, The Pickle Family Circus, all he wanted to do was run away from it. But when your father is the head clown in charge, and you’re expected to follow in his oversized footsteps, your relationship is bound to get complicated. In the case of Lorenzo’s father, Larry, it became difficult and almost downright impossible to see the man behind the face paint. And ultimately, it was Larry who ended up running away. In CIRCUS KID, we delve deep into the past to learn more about the family business, and the legends and tragedies that grew out of it. But most notably, we follow Lorenzo Pisoni as he reconnects with his father, Larry, to try and get a better understanding of what was going on behind the laughs, and solve some of the mysteries of his father’s epic life – from child runaway, to circus innovator, to absent father – all of which have so far in the past twenty years gone unanswered. DOLLS OF DARKNESS/ THE ART OF MICHEL ADJAR Canada/US/France, 2017, 70 min. What is a doll? What is a doll? It’s something strange. It’s something in the shadows. It’s something from the earth. It’s something from the origin. It’s something magical. It’s something paternal. It’s something forbidden. It’s something from God. It’s something distant. It’s something without eyes. It’s something animal. It’s something birdlike. It’s something silent. It’s something eternal. It’s something of mud. It’s something of pebbles. Something vegetal. Something from childhood. Something cruel. Something joyous. Something screaming. Something mute. That’s it! - Michel Nedjar (From Gregory Whitehead & Allen S. Weiss, L’Indomptable, France Culture, 1996) DOLLS OF DARKNESS is a feature length film by Allen S. Weiss and Tom Rasky that explores the mysteries and profundities of dolls, puppets and marionettes in the context of the grotesque rag dolls of contemporary French artist Michel Nedjar. It focuses on his studio and his vast collection of magic dolls and masks from around the world, and examines the role of the Holocaust in the artist’s creative process. DOLLS OF DARKNESS is the English subtitled version of Poupées des ténèbres (2016, 63”).

With unprecedented access to both Dolores and her children, the film reveals the raw, personal stories behind the public figure. THE ISLANDS AND THE WHALES Netherlands, 2017, 85 min. In their remote home in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islanders have always eaten what nature could provide, proud to put local food on the table. The land yields little, so they have always relied on harvesting their seas. Hunting whales and seabirds kept them alive for generations, and gave them the way of life they love; a life they would pass on to their children. But today they face a grave threat to this tradition. It is not the controversy surrounding whaling that threatens the Faroese way of life; the danger is coming from the whales themselves. The Faroese are among the first to feel the affects of our ever more polluted oceans. They have discovered that their beloved whales are toxic, contaminated by the outside world. What once secured their survival now endangers their children and the Faroe Islanders must make a choice between health and tradition. Director // Mike Day
LOOK AND SEE: A PORTRAIT OF WENDELL BERRY US, 2017, 82 min. LOOK & SEE is a cinematic portrait of farmer and writer Wendell Berry. Through his eyes, we see both the changing landscapes of rural America in the era of industrial agriculture and the redemptive beauty in taking the unworn path. Henry County, Kentucky, like many rural landscapes across America, has become a place of quiet ideological struggle. In the span of a generation, virtues of simplicity, land stewardship, local economies and rootedness to place have been supplanted by a capital-intensive model of industrial agriculture characterized by machine labor, chemical fertilizers, soil erosion and debt all of which have frayed the fabric of communities. Writing from a long wooden desk beneath a forty-paned window, Wendell Berry has watched this struggle unfold, becoming one the most passionate and eloquent voices in defense of agrarian life. THE PARIS OPERA
US/Iraq, 2017, 90 min.
France/Switzerland, 2017, 110 min.
After the Americans left Iraq in 2011, a male nurse named Nori Sharif was asked to report on the state of his country, providing unique access into one of the world’s most dangerous and inaccessible areas – the “triangle of death” in central Iraq. Working in the local hospital in Jalawla, he filmed the victims of war over the course of five years. The shocking images show families torn apart, maimed and damaged by the violence in Iraq. And every day more arrive, as the conflicts continue and life is disrupted by attacks over and over again. Often it isn’t even clear who the adversaries are. But the threat level increases, and when the Iraqi army pulls out in 2013 because of militant groups, the population flees – accompanied by the majority of the hospital staff. Sharif is one of the few who remain. When IS advances on Jalawla in 2014 and finally takes over the city, Sharif continues to film. Then he too has to flee at a moment’s notice, to bring himself and his family to safety.
This all-access documentary goes behind the scenes of the Paris Opera, following the array of personnel—management, performers, costumers, cleaning crew— who work to bring breathtaking spectacle to audiences night after night. Over the course of a season, director Jean-Stéphane Bron nimbly juggles a dizzying number of storylines, from labor disputes to procuring a live bull for Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron to a PR crisis involving Benjamin Millepied, the head of the company’s ballet. Sweeping in scope yet full of intimate human moments, THE PARIS OPERA offers a candid look at everything that goes into operating one of the world’s foremost performing arts institutions.

SCHOOL LIFE Ireland/Spain, 2016, 100 min. Housed in an 18th century estate, school life at Headfort embraces tradition and modernity. For John, rock music is just another subject alongside Math, Scripture and Latin, taught in a collaborative and often hilarious fashion. For his wife Amanda, the key to connecting with children is the book, and she uses all means to snare the young minds. For nearly half a century these two have shaped thousands of minds, but as John and Amanda ponder retirement, the film poses a quietly profound question: Will their intimate and caring cultivation of future generations live on, or will it vanish like so many communitycentered practices? US, 2017, 70 min.
More than 15 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the US in 2014; 90% of them on women. Yet plastic surgery remains an unseemly subject in our culture. Thankfully, we have plenty of comedians— female comedians—and no one is better equipped to dismantle taboos.
World-renowned Himalayan expedition leader Gerry Moffatt embarks on a 4,000mile solo motorcycle adventure across the Himalayas for his 50th birthday, intent on exploring changes he’s seen over 30 years of guiding. As challenges and tragedies unfold, his adventure unexpectedly reveals that the biggest changes over the past 30 years were inside him. Inspired to finally revisit a river that almost killed him 20 years ago, Moffatt finds gratitude and closure in the crucible of one of the most dangerous whitewater canyons on the planet. THE TENTH STEP is an inspiring journey through self-discovery and recovery - set amidst a fascinating backdrop of adventure travel history.
This irreverent, hilarious new documentary is former costume designer and journalist Joan Kron’s filmmaking debut—and, at 89, Kron isn’t about to mince words for the sake of social niceties. WHOSE STREETS? US, 2017, 103 min. Told by the activists and leaders who live and breathe this movement for justice, WHOSE STREETS? is an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising. When unarmed teenager Michael Brown is killed by police and left lying in the street for hours, it marks a breaking point for the residents of St. Louis, Missouri. Grief, long-standing racial tensions and renewed anger bring residents together to hold vigil and protest this latest tragedy. Empowered parents, artists, and teachers from around the country come together as freedom fighters. As the National Guard descends on Ferguson with military grade weaponry, these young community members become the torchbearers of a new resistance. A DOMESTIC DILEMMA US, 1991, 30 min. Academy-Award Nominee producer and production designer Kristi Zea (AS GOOD AS IT GETS, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, GOODFELLAS, and REVOLUTIONARY ROAD) takes on Carson McCullers short story “A Domestic Dilemma” in her directorial debut, originally produced in 1991 by Jonathan Demme for the HBO Ace nominated series Women and Men 2: In Love There are no Rules. Set in the early 1950s, advertising man Martin Meadows (Ray Liotta - GOODFELLAS, FIELD OF DREAMS) must rush home from the office regularly to check on his children under the neglectful care of wife Emily (Andie MacDowell - GREEN CARD, SEX,LIES AND VIDEOTAPE), whose alcoholism and denial now threaten their safety. Martin is far from innocent, however, since his passion for Emily proves just as seductive as her taste for sherry. This bittersweet story underscores Carson McCullers’ sensitivity and appreciation of the frailty of love and the complexity of the human condition. Last year Zea’s documentary ”Everybody Knows... Elizabeth Murray” premiered at the Whitney Museum as part of the TriBeca Film Festival and also screened at BIFF. The New York Times Critic’s Pick played at the Film Forum earlier this year to enthusiastic audiences. Carson McCullers was born in Columbus, GA in 1917. Considered one of the greatest American writers of the 20th Century, her work is being celebrated throughout the world in her Centennial year of 2017 for the extraordinary influence her writing has had on the many generations of writers who have followed in her footsteps. Her groundbreaking work in her first novel, “The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter”, established her, at the age of 22, as a unique voice in literature. She examined the psychology of lonely, isolated characters, and depicted them with deep empathy. Her later novels included “Reflections in a Golden Eye”, which was made into a film directed by John Huston starring Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor; “A Member of the Wedding”, adapted to both a film and a play on Broadway which launched the career of a young Julie Harris,’ “The Ballad of a Sad Café”, adapted into a play by Edward Albee; and “The Clock Without Hands”. Her remarkable short stories, essays and poems have been published under the title “Collected Works” and recently re-issued by the Library of America. In a recent New Yorker essay Sarah Schulman wrote “McCullers had an almost singular ability to humanize any kind of person, many of whom had never appeared in American literature before she created them.” The Carson McCullers Center for Writing and Music is located at Columbus State University in Columbus, GA and has recently acquired the house in Nyack, NY where Carson lived for the last 20 years of her life. Due to a childhood illness that compromised McCullers health throughout her life, she died in 1967 at the age of 50. She wrote the story “A Tree. A Rock. A Cloud.” at the age of 25.

KICK-OFF THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND WITH BIFF'S SPECIAL SCREENING OF “THE HAPPY FILM” AT THE MAHAIWE THEATER
JUNE 1-4, 2017
WITH ARTIST AND DIRECTOR STEFAN SAGMEISTER, DIRECTOR BEN NABORS AND DR. SHEENAH HANKIN IN ATTENDANCE
94
Friday, May 26 at 6:30PM
Austrian designer Stefan Sagmeister is doing well. He lives in New York, the city of his dreams, and he has success in his work, designing album covers for the Rolling Stones, Jay-Z and the Talking Heads. But in the back of his mind he suspects there must be something more. He decides to turn himself into a design project. Can he redesign his personality to become a better person? Is it possible to train his mind to get happier? He pursues 3 controlled experiments of meditation, therapy, and drugs, grading himself along the way. But real life creeps in and confounds the process: art, sex, love, and death prove impossible to disentangle. His unique designs and painfully personal experiences mark a journey that travels closer to himself than ever intended.
