BIFF will open at the Beacon in Pittsfield with the rock-and-rolling BAD REPUTATION about the one and only Joan Jett. The documentary follows her incredible, uncompromising and influential career. You will leave singing “I love rock ‘n’ roll!” The opening night begins with a party at the Beacon Cinema followed by the presentation of the NINTH annual “Next Great Filmmaker Award” sponsored by Berkshire Bank—cast your vote until before May 30 at www.biffma. org and be part of the excitement! It is a pleasure, and a huge honor, to pay tribute to the Academy Award-winning actor, Rachel Weisz for her remarkable achievement in film. Over the past 25 years, Ms. Weisz has displayed her fearlessness, intelligence and talent in over 64 roles and has won or been nominated for nearly every industry award—from a BAFTA, to a Golden Globe, to an Oscar. We celebrate the incredible body of work she has already created and the creative peaks she continues to climb. After a conversation with Ms. Weisz on the stage of the Mahaiwe, BIFF will screen her new film DISOBEDIENCE. The special event’s festivities, sponsored by GWFF, include a cocktail party and dinnerby-the-bite for pass-holders catered by The Red Lion Inn at the BIFF tent.

Finally, BIFF’s biennial gala is this Labor Day weekend—BOLLYWOOD IN THE BERKSHIRES! To introduce the Berkshire community to the wonderful film world of Bollywood, BIFF presents 3 FREE Bollywood films at Simon’s Rock on June 2. Join us in celebrating, Bollywood in the Berkshires! Thank you to everyone that who has joined and continues to support the REEL Friends Film Society. It is vital to the BIFF and allows us to bring the best films to the festival and throughout the year. I must thank my incredibly dedicated and generous board of directors, our new executive director Laura Palmer, Lauren Ferin and the festival staff, the endless and selfless efforts of the advisory board, Lillian Lennox and the programming producers, the generous support and loyalty of our sponsors, the energy and spirit of our volunteers, the Triplex, Beacon, Mahaiwe and Simon’s Rock staff as well as the tremendous support from the towns of Great Barrington and Pittsfield. So, leave your passport at home because BIFF will bring the world to you! Join me as we kick-off another wonderful cultural season in the Berkshires and let the cameras roll!

GENERAL INFO AND MAPS

The festival opens this year with the Sundance hit AMERICAN ANIMALS. This docudrama is the extraordinary and thrilling true story of four friends who brazenly attempt to execute one of the most audacious art heists in US history. At its Sundance premiere, a Variety reviewer wrote, “this Sundance crowd-pleaser is a… wildly entertaining true-crime thriller.” The Hollywood Reporter had this to say, “Both as a writer and director, Bart Layton delivers the dramatic goods here with the skill of a pro at the top of his game while adding the rueful perspective of time’s reassessment of youthful indiscretions; this has to rate among the most accomplished and fully realized big-screen debuts of recent times.” Opening night festivities also include dinner, drinks and a dance party for pass-holders catered and sponsored by MAX Ultimate Food.

In addition to the dozens of remarkable films, BIFF will host some special events throughout the weekend including GWFF USA’s Juried Prize Award for narrative and documentary filmmaking, free family film screenings, and panel discussions. It is also our second year hosting “Tea Talks.” This year’s lineup includes a conversation with the Berkshires own, Cynthia Wade, preceded by a special sneak preview of her new prereleased film GRIT. The filmmaker and crew will be in attendance. We are also hosting a conversation with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Charles Randolph (THE BIG SHORT) who will be joined by acclaimed artist, Gregory Crewdson. Our third Tea Talk will be a sneak preview of a film from an award-winning director who will be in attendance for a conversation with his cast and crew. And don’t miss the staged reading of the upcoming film MUMBET followed by a Q&A with the director, writer, cast, producers, designers and special guests.

While this year’s festival will transport you to foreign lands, we are also bringing you important, engaging, powerful and fun stories from around the US and right here in the Berkshire community.

BIFF will close with the highly acclaimed Sundance hit, WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? about the life and legacy of Mr. Rogers. The film was directed by Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville and produced by Nicholas Ma who will be in attendance for a Q&A after the screening.

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BIFF EXPERIENCE! There are a lot of moving parts to the BIFF. The following rules and suggestions are to ensure that everyone who comes to the BIFF has the best experience possible and that our volunteers and staff can manage all of our events and screening.

ADMISSION

NOTE TO OUR PASSHOLDERS: To guarantee admission and priority early entry, you must be present at the venue 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time—a standard for all film festivals. Late seating is only permitted if easily accessible seats are available. Empty seats will be sold to festival-goers waiting patiently in our RUSH LINE.

RE-ENTRY INTO THEATERS

If you must exit the theater you must alert a BIFF usher to ensure re-entry to that same screening. This policy applies to passholders too.

FESTIVAL ETIQUETTE

• Do not bring outside food into the festival theaters. In addition to their ongoing support of the BIFF, our theater partners offer a variety of food and drink through their concession stands. • Exit the theaters immediately after all screenings. This will allow staff and volunteers to clean and ready the theater for the next screening. • Do not save seats for other guests between shows. • Take your trash with you when you leave the theater. • Keep talking to a minimum when exiting theaters as to not disturb patrons in other theaters. • Recording equipment is not allowed in the theater. • Turn off all cell phones during the screening. • Refrain from talking during the screening so all of our guests may enjoy the film. • There is no late seating if the theater is at full capacity. • Lines may lead outside of the theater and temperatures in the theater vary. For your comfort, bring layers and dress appropriately.

“This Sundance crowdpleaser is a… wildly entertaining true-crime thriller” - Variety “Both as a writer and director, Layton delivers the dramatic goods here with the skill of a pro at the top of his game while adding the rueful perspective of time’s reassessment of youthful indiscretions; this has to rate among the most accomplished and fully realized big-screen debuts of recent times.” - Hollywood Reporter

American Animals is the extraordinary and thrilling true story of four friends who brazenly attempt to execute one of the most audacious art heists in U.S. history. Centering on unpredictable wild child Warren (Evan Peters) and aspiring artist Spencer (Barry Keoghan), two friends from the middle-class suburbs of Lexington, Kentucky, the film follows the duo through college life at separate universities, as adult pressures begin to weigh heavily on their futures. Realizing their lives may never be important, they organize the brazen theft of some valuable books from the special collections library of Spencer’s college, including Audubon’s Birds of America, valued at $10 million. Enlisting two more friends, budding accountant Eric (Jared Abrahamson) and fitness fanatic Chas (Barry Jenner), the gang meticulously plots the theft and subsequent fencing of the stolen volumes, taking cues from popular heist movies. But the thieves’ plan goes awry, placing their bright futures in limbo. Unfolding from multiple perspectives, and shifting between the fictionalized central narrative and documentarystyle interviews with the real-life figures on which the story is based, writer-directed Bart Layton (The Imposter) elevates the heist movie to bold and thrilling new heights.

This is the true story of an unsung American hero who was truly a founding Mother of our country.

SNEAK PREVIEW of a soon-to-be-released new film from an award-winning writer and director. The film was shot entirely in the area and includes an Emmy-Award winning actress and a wonderful ensemble cast. The director and members of the cast and crew will be in attendance immediately following the film. An event you do not want to miss!

When Dian was six years old, she heard a deep rumble and turned to see a tsunami of mud barreling towards her village. Her neighbors ran for their lives. Sixteen villages, including Dian’s, were plunged under 60 feet of mud. A decade later, nearly 60,000 people have been displaced from what was once a thriving industrial and residential area in East Java, Indonesia. The cause? Lapindo, a multinational company drilling for natural gas in 2006, struck an underground pocket of mud and unleashed a violent flow of hot sludge from the earth’s depths. Despite initial assurances to do so, Lapindo has not provided promised reparations to the victims. With factories and offices buried deep, the victims turn the disaster site into a popular tourist destination. Dian’s mother spends her days guiding curious Indonesians across the wasteland so the tourists can snap photos of the boiling muck spurting violently into the sky. The vast lunar landscape is littered with bizarre activities: fashion photographers take stylish photos of models in ball gowns; vendors sell selfie sticks; protesters smear mud over their bodies in stubborn acts of resistance. Dian is determined to rise out of the muddy life. She and her mother fight against the corporation accused of one of the largest man-made environmental disasters in recent history. The film bears witness to Dian’s transformation into a politically active teenager as she questions the role of corporate power and money in the institution of democracy itself.

CONTENDING SHORT FILMS: GAME FEVAH REBUILDING IN MINIATURE WALLS WITH MY TWO HANDS

Joan Jett is so much more than “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll.” It’s true, she became mega-famous from the number-one hit, and that fame intensified with the music video’s endless play on MTV. But that staple of popularity can’t properly define a musician. Jett put her hard work in long before the fame, ripping it up onstage as the backbone of the hard-rock legends The Runaways, influencing many musicians— both her cohort of punk rockers and generations of younger bands—with her no-bullshit style. Bad Reputation gives you a wild ride as Jett and her close friends tell you how it really was in the burgeoning ’70s punk scene, and their interviews are laced with amazing archival footage. The theme is clear: even though people tried to define Jett and keep her stuck to one hit, she never compromised. She will kick your ass, and you’ll love her all the more for it Director // Kevin Kerslake Writer // Joel Marcus Exec. Producers // Dan Braun, Justus Haerder, Kathy Rivkin-Daum

THE CHARMER

EDIE

EIGHTH GRADE

Iran/Holland, 2017, 100 min.

UK, 2018, 115 min.

US, 2018, 95 min.

The Charmer” is an intense psychological drama about Esmail, a young Iranian man who is desperately looking to meet women who can secure his stay in Denmark. As time is running out he falls in love and his past catches up with him.

Edith Moore (Edie) is a bitter, gruff woman in her eighties. In the months following her husband George’s death, Edie’s strained relationship with her daughter Nancy begins to worsen. The question over Edie’s future looms large; while Edie tries hard to convince Nancy she can manage fine by herself, Nancy is making plans for her mother to move to a retirement home. Edie feels like it is the beginning of the end. It seems she will die with all the regrets of her past intact and one regret haunts her most of all. When Edie was married, her father planned a climbing trip for them in the Scottish Highlands. Edie yearned to go, but her husband George, a difficult and controlling man, made her stay at home, nearly thirty years later, Edie decides to make the trip herself alone.

Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school—the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year— before she begins high school.

THE ETERNAL FEMININE

THE GUILTY

Mexico, 2017, 90 min.

When police officer Asger Holm (Jakob Cedergren) is demoted to desk work, he expects a sleepy beat as an emergency dispatcher. That all changes when he answers a panicked phone call from a kidnapped woman who then disconnects abruptly. Asger, confined to the police station, is forced to use others as his eyes and ears as the severity of the crime slowly becomes more clear. The search to find the missing woman and her assailant will take every bit of his intuition and skill, as a ticking clock and his own personal demons conspire against him. This innovative and unrelenting Danish thriller uses a single location to great effect, ratcheting up the tension as twists pile up and secrets are revealed. Director Gustav Möller expertly frames the increasingly messy proceedings against the clean Scandinavian sterility of the police department, while Cedergren’s strong performance anchors the film and places the audience squarely in Holm’s tragically flawed yet well-intentioned mindspace.

Rosario Castellanos is an introverted university student who doesn’t seem to belong to her time. In the early 1950s in Mexico City, she is fighting to have her voice heard in a society run by men. She is about to become one of the biggest female writers in Mexican literature, but her tumultuous love story with Ricardo Guerra will manifest her fragility and contradictions. At the peak of her career and her marriage, she will ignite a discussion that will mark a turning point in her life. L’INSTANT INFINI

THE INVISIBLES

France/Switzerland, 2017, 90 min.

Germany, 2017, 110 min.

France, 2017, 110 min.

Young and pretty Mary believes she’s responsible for the death of her little daughter and became a self-pleasure addict to keep her mind from reliving the terrible event.

Four young Jews survive the Third Reich in the middle of Berlin by living so recklessly that they become “invisible.” Hanni, Cioama, Eugen and Ruth. Four ordinary German youths trying to navigate the scarcities and prohibitions of Berlin at the height of World War II. They hailed from different social classes and different neighborhoods, but they shared a single common secret: they were Jews. While Goebbels infamously declared Berlin “free of Jews” in 1943, some 1,700 managed to survive in Nazism’s capital until liberation. Claus Räfle’s gripping docudrama traces the stories of four real-life survivors who learned that sometimes the best place to hide is in plain sight. While moving between cinemas, cafés and safe houses they dodged Gestapo and a dense network of spies and informants, knowing that certain death was just one mistake away. Yet their prudence was at odds with their youthful inclination towards recklessness, sometimes prompting them to join the resistance, forge passports, or pose as Aryan war widows. Masterfully weaving the different story threads together, THE INVISIBLES is a testament to the resourcefulness, willpower, and sheer chance that permit us to survive against incredible odds.

By a little bay near Marseille lies a picturesque villa owned by an old man. His three children have gathered by his side for his last days: Angela, an actress living in Paris, Joseph, who has just fallen in love with a girl half his age and Armand, the only one who stayed behind in Marseille to run the family’s small restaurant. It’s time for them to weigh up what they have inherited of their father’s ideals and the community spirit he created in this magical place. The arrival, at a nearby cove, of a group of boat people will throw these moments of reflection into turmoil. LOVELING

MAZE

Brazil/Uruguay, 2018, 95 min.

Ireland, 2017, 93 min.

Irene is married to Klaus. They live in Petrópolis, a small city on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, and have four children. Fernando, Rodrigo, and the twins. The couple has been struggling for years to finish building their new house. Irene works as an independent seller while finishing her studies to get her high-school diploma. Klaus runs a small copy shop where he also sells books. Fernando, their eldest son, plays handball. After being the highlight of the season, the boy is invited to join a professional team in Germany and will leave his parents house much sooner than expected. Among the everyday issues of their family’s life, Irene will have to deal with the early separation from Fernando and adapt to a new life without him

MAZE charts how inmate Larry Marley, played by Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Love / Hate), becomes chief architect of the largest prison escape in Europe since World War II – an escape which he plans but does not go on himself. Up against him is the most state-of-the-art and secure prison in the whole of Europe - a prison within a prison. While scheming his way towards pulling off this feat, Larry comes into close contact with prison warder Gordon Close, played by Barry Ward (Jimmy’s Hall). Larry and Gordon’s complex journey begins with cautious, chess-like moves. Initially, Gordon holds all the power in their relationship and rejects all of Larry’s attempts at establishing a friendship between them. Bit by bit, Larry wears down Gordon’s defenses, maneuvering himself into a position of trust. As each man begins to engage with the other as an equal, the barrier between prisoner and warder has been broken. During all this time, however, Larry has been scheming behind Gordon’s back, gleaning as much information as he can and working with other prisoners in a separate block, trying to engineer their escape. When the escape finally takes place, thirty-eight prisoners reach the main gate and nineteen get away. Gordon is stunned by Larry’s betrayal and his own foolishness. Still, both of them have been irrevocably changed by their interaction. Their relationship represents the beginning of dialogue between the two sides, the first green shoots of the eventual peace process. As both the epicentre of an enduring conflict and the source of its eventual resolution, the story of MAZE is the story of the troubles themselves.

17-year-old Asher has always been the impulsive troublemaker, from primary school, all through junior high and high school. It’s hard for him to concentrate in class, and he is compelled by a lot of rage and violence; yet he is also endowed with a considerable amount of charm and street wisdom. While his strict father sees him as a natural successor to the family’s scaffolding business, Asher finds a different masculine role model in his gentle literature teacher Rami and forges a special connection with him. Torn between the two worlds, Asher looks for a chance for a new life and new identity. When a sudden tragedy occurs, he has to take the ultimate test of maturity.

Two women trapped in a safe house where nothing is safe and no one can be trusted. Based on “The Link” by Shulamit Hareven. A subtle thriller set in Germany involving Mona, a Lebanese woman (Golshifteh Farahani), and Naomi, an Israeli Mossad agent (Neta Riskin) sent to protect their informant while recovering from plastic surgery for her new identity. Mona and Naomi - together for two weeks in a quiet apartment in Hamburg. A safe house. A shelter. In this game of deception, beliefs are questioned and choices are made that are not their own. And yet their fate takes a surprising turn in this suspense-laden, elegant neo-noir.

La Tuque, autumn 1926. Félix Leclerc, 12, accompanies his father Léo, his brother and his uncle on their daily work. Along the way, he meets Fidor, a boy his age from a very poor family. The two kids build a strong bond of friendship throughout the coming year, which is filled with a number of firsts and lasts for Felix. The first impossible love with the pretty nurse who shelters his horse in the Leclerc stable. His first perilous trip to a remote corner of the Mauricie, where Léo, a coureur des bois in his soul, intends to found a village. It’s also Félix’s last summer in La Tuque, because next September, he’ll be leaving the parents he loves to go to school in Ottawa. Netherlands/Spain, 2017, 90 min.

Germany/Italy, 2018, 95 min.

When a 20-year old girl meets the charismatic boy living across the street, it starts her on the road to becoming a successful drug dealer on Silk Road. Along the way she gets caught up in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game played by police, criminals, and her own boyfriend. How far will she go? Who can she trust – and just who is using who?

In order to get out of a financial crisis, high school teacher Balz Naef (53) starts recruiting and training streakers for illegal sports betting. While he and his team help streaking become the new trend sport, his situation does not improve. On the contrary: His troubles have only just begun.

As a man courts the acceptance of his girlfriend’s son, the unstable triangle heads for a harrowing fight for survival. Fatherhood, suspicion and resentment are a combustible formula in Jan Zabeil’s elegant, unnerving domestic thriller. German Aaron (Alexander Fehling, Homeland) has found the woman of his life in his French girlfriend Lea (Bérénice Bejo, The Artist) but her young son Tristan still imagines his mother reconciling with his American father. On what should be an idyllic vacation in the soaring Italian Dolomites, Aaron fights to win over Tristan and cement his place in this family, while Lea wrestles with conflicting loyalties to her son and her lover. Yet when Tristan disappears into the mountains, it’s unclear who is in the most danger. Complex, deceptive and gripping to the last second, THREE PEAKS chips away at our darkest nightmares to reveal the everyday anxieties on which they feed.

UNDER THE TREE

WOMAN WALKS AHEAD

US/France, 2018, 90 min.

US, 2017, 110 min.

UNDER THE EIFFEL TOWER is a comingof-middle age tale that follows bourbon salesman Stuart (VEEP’s Matt Walsh) after a heart-crushing break up in Paris sets in motion a life crisis that lands him on a journey across the French countryside where a possible romance blooms with local wine saleswoman, Louise (Cesarnominated actress, Judith Godreche). Featuring a notable comedy ensemble cast including Reid Scott (VEEP), David Wain (WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER), Gary Cole (TALLADEGA NIGHTS), Michaela Watkins (CASUAL), and Dylan Gelula (FLOWER), the dark comedy landscape of UNDER THE EIFFEL TOWER takes the viewer on an emotional comedic journey where, like wine, the heart can transform and age to its proper multi-layered vintage.

UNDER THE TREE follows a man who is accused of adultery and forced to move in with his parents. While he fights for custody of his four-year-old daughter, he is gradually sucked into a dispute between his parents and their neighbors over an old and beautiful tree. What starts as a typical spat between suburban neighbors unexpectedly and violently reaches a boiling point, soon spiraling out of control.

Based on a true story, this riveting western follows a headstrong New York widow (Jessica Chastain) as she takes a dangerous journey west to paint Sioux chief Sitting Bull, facing off with an army officer (Sam Rockwell) intent on war with Native Americans.

US/Hungary, 2018, 88 min.

In 1998 there were less than 1,500 breweries in the United States - now there are over 7,000. BREWMASTER tells the story of the rise of craft beer through two young men pursuing their dreams in the world of beer. Drew is a New York lawyer who wants to start his own brewery. He uses every free moment to make this a reality while preparing for a pitch with a potential investor. Brian, an ex-telemarketer, is studying to become a Master Cicerone - the beer equivalent of a sommelier which requires taking a test only 13 people have ever passed. Set in the craft beer community, the film features successful brewers Sam Calagione, John and Jen Kimmich, Jim Koch, Garrett Oliver and Rob Tod.

When siblings Elan and Jonathan Bogarín lose their grandma, they uncover an extraordinary universe in the seemingly ordinary home they inherit. Their overwhelmed mother tells them to “Sell the house, and throw everything out!”, but instead they embark on an epic journey to discover what life remains in the objects left behind. Grandma’s house and all of the collected junk at 306 Hollywood Avenue springs to life in the cinematic playground of this rule-breaking, magicalrealist documentary. The filmmaking duo’s odyssey leads from suburban New Jersey to ancient Rome — using fashion, physics, dance, and archeology to illuminate how the most ordinary objects can transform into a vast metaphor for the nature of memory, time, and history.

Amidst a landmark class action lawsuit over illegal policing quotas, CRIME + PUNISHMENT intimately observes the real lives and struggles of a group of black and Latino whistleblower cops known as “The NYPD 12” and the young minorities they are pressured to arrest and summons in New York City. Over four years of unprecedented access, the film cinematically exposes the interconnected stories of systemic injustice in New York City policing through the bold efforts of a group of active duty officers, an innocent young man stuck in Rikers and one unforgettable private investigator. They bravely risk their safety, careers and livelihoods to bring light to harmful policing practices which have plagued the precincts and streets of New York City for decades.

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ANDRE

THE HUMAN ELEMENT

IMPOSED PIECE

US/Iceland, 2018, 80 min.

US, 2017, 95 min.

Renowned environmental photographer James Balog (CHASING ICE) uses his camera to reveal how environmental change is affecting the lives of everyday Americans. Following the four classical elements— air, earth, fire and water— to frame his journey, Balog explores wildfires, hurricanes, sea level rise, coal miners, and the changes in the air we breathe. With compassion and heart, THE HUMAN ELEMENT tells an urgent story while giving inspiration for a more balanced relationship between humanity and nature.

IMPOSED PIECE is a cinematographic chronicle revealing one of the most prestigious violin’s competition: the Queen Elisabeth. Through this documentary, the audience meets some of the twelve finalists and follows their intense preparation. These young and talented musicians finally have the chance to manifest themselves as soloists after years of practice and sacrifices. Pressure and expectations are high. In complete seclusion and during an eight-day period, they must study a compulsory piece and a concerto of their choice. Little by little, the film reveals how they prepare, how they cope with stress and how they reflect on their past and future.

André Leon Talley has been a fixture in the world of fashion for so long that it’s difficult to imagine a time when he wasn’t defining the boundaries of great style. Kate Novack’s intimate portrait, THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ANDRÉ takes viewers on an emotional journey from André’s roots growing up in the segregated Jim Crow South to become one of the most influential tastemakers and fashion curators of our times. Weaving together a wealth of archival footage from the most glamorous moments in fashion history with André’s poignant reflections on his life and career, THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ANDRÉ is a cinematic monument to one of the most unique figures of 20th Century American culture.

MOVING STORIES US/India/Iraq/Romania/South Korea, 2018, 85 min. Six dancers from an acclaimed New York dance company travel the world, working with young people who’ve experienced war, poverty, prejudice, sexual exploitation, and severe trauma as refugees. The film follows them to India, where they work with girls rescued from sex trafficking and gender violence; to Romania, with Roma (gypsy) kids from one of Europe’s worst slums; to South Korea, with young North Koreans who risked their lives to escape; and to Iraq, where they work with a gifted young Muslim dancer, fighting to survive. Incredibly, they have just one week to teach the tools of choreography and collaboration to kids who may be enemies, who may have been abused, who may be suspicious and fearful, so that they can tell their stories through dance and perform for their communities. As they struggle to break through, the dancer-teachers confront their own frustrations. Yet their students respond in extraordinary ways - and as they prepare to perform in public in what seems an impossibly short time, both students and teachers experience surprising transformations, unlocking feelings and stories in wellsprings of creativity. STUDIO 54 US, 2018, 98 min. Studio 54 was the epicentre of ’70s hedonism—a monumental magnet for beautiful stars, casual sex, and mounds of cocaine, a den of excess that defined its own rules and enshrined the ostracized, queer, and fabulous. Matt Tyrnauer (Valentino: The Last Emperor) chronicles the rise and fall of this nightclub’s founders: two best friends from Brooklyn, Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, who conquered New York City only to have it crumble before their eyes. With rare footage, a parade of colourful patrons and staff, and brutally honest interviews with Schrager himself, STUDIO 54 is a riveting study in contradictions. Inside the palatial theatre-turned-disco, the crowd revelled in an atmosphere of total acceptance, whether drag queen, octogenarian, waiter, or celebrity. Yet outside, a frenzied, excluded mob yearned to be noticed by the doorman and ushered into the sanctum of pulsating love. Schrager and Rubell’s glittering creation sprang from carefree naiveté and unbridled ambition—yet those same instincts managed to destroy it. This bracing story reveals how even the most culturally potent and transformative phenomena can be vulnerable and fleeting. Director // Matt Tyrnauer

THIS IS HOME: A REFUGEE STORY

THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS

WHAT LIES UPSTREAM

US/Jordan, 2018, 90 min.

US, 2018, 95 min.

THIS IS HOME is an intimate portrait of four Syrian refugee families arriving in America and struggling to find their footing. Displaced from their homes and separated from loved ones, they are given eight months of assistance from the International Rescue Committee to become self-sufficient. As they learn to adapt to challenges, including the newly imposed travel ban, their strength and resilience are tested. It is a universal story, highlighted by humor and heartbreak, about what it’s like to start over, no matter the obstacles.

New York, 1980: three complete strangers accidentally discover that they are identical triplets, separated at birth. The 19-yearolds’ joyous reunion catapults them to international fame, but it also unlocks an extraordinary and disturbing secret that goes beyond their own lives – and could transform our understanding of human nature forever.

In this detective story, filmmaker Cullen Hoback investigates the largest chemical drinking water contamination in a generation. But something is rotten in state and federal regulatory agencies, and through years of persistent journalism, we learn the shocking truth about what’s really happening with drinking water in America. WHAT LIES UPSTREAM is a powerful document for the world at large on the perils of believing government organizations and corporations will take care of the human species. We all must join in the movement to protect water now and for generations to come.

of the human body is intertwined with her early role as a caretaker to her mother, who contracted polio when Elizabeth was a child. A generous presence, King devoted nearly 40 years to nurturing her adoring students at Virginia Commonwealth University, inspiring a generation of younger women artists in the school’s renown Sculpture Department. Newly retired from her teaching position, King is more than ever able to focus on her work, and examine her motives and making, and with major solo shows driving her, King seems poised to get her due. In studio visits, conversations with peers and art world figures, Double Take: The Art of Elizabeth King invites the viewer to consider what looking and seeing one another means in our increasingly visual world.

Double Take: The Art of Elizabeth King illuminates the aesthetic and engineering questions sculptor Elizabeth King puzzles over with an acute sensitivity to both life, and the life-like. Elizabeth King is a quiet iconoclast in the art world. She has created her own genre at the intersection of the classical and automata. An accomplished artist with an eye for the intimate meaning of gesture, King obsessively manipulates her materials to produce pieces that both approximate and challenge the viewer. Consumed by questions of art and automation, King approaches each day in the studio as an opportunity to problem solve on the way to making a piece work. A sought after solo exhibitor, whose work is featured in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, LACMA and the Hirshhorn, King’s individual and group shows punctuate her workaday world that is focused on parsing the distance between the automated and the alive. Her work is informed by a passionate interest in the fabled histories of objects that come to life. Her interest in the capacities and nuances

8 1 0 2 MAY 30 - 31 The Berkshire International Film Festival proudly presents its 7th annual Filmmaker Summit, a two-day talent academy that supports the advancement of filmmakers. Through roundtable discussions, tech presentations, panels, and networking events past and current BIFF filmmakers screening at the festival have access to the best of the industry. The Summit is held at special-effects master, Doug Trumbull’s state-of-the-art studio in Southfield, and gathers leading industry professionals to present a series of discussions covering the most compelling trends in entertainment. By providing filmmakers with direct access to these professionals, the Summit expands their perspective and knowledge of the industry: from development to exhibition, insurance to financing, scheduling to marketing, and the influence of fields such as social media, new media and mobile platforms.

Thank you to coordinator Carolyn Lancaster, our sponsors Mary Mott and Gordon Simmering, and our hosts Doug and Julia Trumbull. We could not present the summit without the participation of the industry professionals who donate their time and expertise.
