Welcome to the exciting 2011 annual Berkshire International Film Festival. After our tremendous 5th anniversary year, I am pleased to be building on that success to bring our community and audience a festival that will entertain, challenge, engage, inspire and amaze us. Good filmmaking is synonymous with good storytelling and the stories our filmmakers are sharing with us are wonderful and heroic. We love film because it takes us places physically, visually and emotionally and connects us to the world in our own backyard and places a million mile away. I continue to be amazed at the amount of inspired filmmaking that is being created and I celebrate those filmmakers who share their stories and their talent. So come journey with us to Afghanistan, Cambodia, Australia, Iran, England, France, China, Italy, Rwanda, Chile and South Korea. In addition to the films, BIFF will host some special events throughout the weekend including GWFF USA’s Juried Prize Award for narrative and documentary filmmaking, free family film screenings and a panel discussion called “Small Acts, Big Changes” on Human Rights with awardwinning filmmakers and industry professionals on Sunday, a special event sponsored by Berkshire Media and Film Commission of A LETTER TO ELIA written and directed by Pittsfield native, Kent Jones and Martin Scorcese on Saturday. The BIFF is honored to have our second annual Jury include, actors Peter Riegert, Jayne Atkinson, and Michel Gill, award-winning screenwriters Courtney Hunt and John Orloff, distribution guru Josh Braun, Production Designer Kristi Zea and casting agent Gretchen Rennell. We are also very pleased to present the second annual “Next Great Filmmaker Award” sponsored by Berkshire Bank – you can cast your vote until May 31 at www.biffma.org - vote today and be part of the excitement! BIFF is extremely proud to this year pay tribute to the legendary special effects icon and beloved Berkshire resident...Doug Trumbull! Doug pioneered the visual effects in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Blade Runner, each of which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. He then went on to direct the iconic films Silent Running, Brainstorm, and Back to the Future... The Ride which is fondly remembered in the Berkshires since the effects were created in his Sheffield studios. The Berkshires celebrates the iconic, groundbreaking work of Mr. Trumbull and his contributions to all of us in this community. We are proud to call him our own. I want to thank everyone that has joined the REEL Friends Film Society and because of the tremendous response we have held monthly events for our film society with special screenings, receptions with filmmakers and events making the BIFF year-round. As always, a great many people have spent the entire year helping to bring this celebration to our community. I must thank my incredibly dedicated board of directors and staff, the endless, selfless efforts of the advisory board and programming producers, the generous support and loyalty of our sponsors, the energy and spirit of our volunteers, my PIC and the Triplex and Beacon staff, the Mahaiwe staff as well as the towns of Great Barrington and Pittsfield and the support of the merchants, restaurant-owners and selectman of both towns. So let’s kick-off another wonderful cultural season in the Berkshires and let the cameras roll!

In the tradition of great fly-on-the-wall documentaries, Andrew Rossi’s riveting documentary PAGE ONE: INSIDE THE NEW yORK TIMES deftly gains unprecedented access to the New york Times newsroom and the inner workings of the Media Desk. With the Internet surpassing print as our main news source and newspapers all over the country going bankrupt, PAGE ONE chronicles the transformation of the media industry at its time of greatest turmoil. Writers like Brian Stelter, Tim Arango and the salty but brilliant David Carr track print journalism’s metamorphosis even as their own paper struggles to stay vital and solvent, while their editors and publishers grapple with upto-the-minute issues like controversial new sources and the implications of an online pay-wall. Meanwhile, rigorous journalism is thriving—PAGE ONE gives us an up-close look at the vibrant cross-cubicle debates and collaborations, tenacious jockeying for onrecord quotes, and skillful page-one pitching that brings the most venerable newspaper in America to fruition each and every day.

THE HORSE WHISPERER may be the stuff of Hollywood legend, but the charismatic horseman who inspired the novel and the film is very real. For Buck Brannaman - a true cowboy who is also part guru and part philosopher - horses are a mirror of the human soul. BUCK, a richly textured and visually stunning films, follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his unusual approach to horse-training. Eschewing the violence of his past, he teaches people to communicate with horses through instinct, not punishment. He possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses - and people - with his understanding, compassion and respect. In the film, the animal-human relationship becomes a perfect metaphor for meeting the challenges of daily life. A truly American story about an unsung hero: an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds.

From writer/director Mike Mills comes a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments. Beginners imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Golden Globe Award nominee Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent of Inglourious Basterds) only months after his father Hal (Academy Award nominee Christopher Plummer) has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who— following 44 years of marriage—came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal’s new honesty by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they’d ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to l ove Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him.

As the country became a slaughterhouse, mosques became places of refuge where Muslims and Christians, Hutus and Tutsis came together to protect each other. Kinyarwanda is based on true accounts from survivors who took refuge at the Grand Mosque of Kigali and the Imams who opened their doors to give refuge to the Tutsi and to those Hutu who refused to participate in the killing. The story interweaves six different tales that together form one grand narrative.

At 8:30am on December 11th, 2008 two federal agents entered the New York City penthouse and arrested Bernard Madoff, the admitted mastermind behind the largest act of financial fraud in world history. Ten years prior, Boston-based Securities Analyst Harry Markopolos discovered that Bernard L. Madoff Securities was a Ponzi scheme. Comparable to Eliot Ness and Al Capone, the film is the compelling story of Harry Markopolos and his team of investigator’s ten-year struggle to expose the harrowing truth behind the infamous Madoff scandal. Throughout the decade long investigation, Markopolos pieced together a chain of white-collar predators consisting of financial fraudsters, lieutenants, and henchmen, all linked to the devastating Ponzi scheme. CHASING MADOFF is a documentary that reveals the frightening true story behind the Bernard Madoff scandal from the team that discovered it ten-years before the public.

In 1983, Deborah Peagler, a woman brutally abused by her boyfriend, was sentenced to 25 years-to-life for her connection to his murder. 20 years later, a California law allowing incarcerated domestic-violence survivors to reopen their cases was passed. Enter a pair of rookie land-use attorneys convinced that with the incontrovertible evidence that existed, they could free Deborah in a matter of months. What they didn’t know was the depth of corruption and politically driven resistance they’d encounter, sending them down a nightmarish, bureaucratic rabbit hole of injustice. The outrageous twists and turns in this consummately crafted saga are enough to keep us on the edge of our seats. Meanwhile, the spirit, fortitude, and love all three characters marshal in the face of this wrenching marathon is nothing short of miraculous.

Film in Juried Competition Sometimes a film makes history; it doesn’t just document it. So it is with Granito: How to Nail a Dictator, the astonishing new film by Pamela Yates. Part political thriller, part memoir, Yates transports us back in time through a riveting, haunting tale of genocide and returns to the present with a cast of characters joined by destiny and the quest to bring a malevolent dictator to justice. As if a watchful Maya god were weaving back together threads of a story unraveled by the passage of time, forgotten by most, our characters become integral to the overarching narrative of wrongs done and justice sought that they have pieced together, each adding their granito, their tiny grain of sand, to the epic tale.

A memorial for those who believed in freedom and lost their lives in support of Iran’s Green Revolution, the film uses animation, interviews, blogs, tweets and cell phone footage to bring the audience into the streets with the protesters. Green is the color of hope. Green is the color of Islam, and Green was the symbol of recognition among the supporters of Iranian presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi. This touching documentary-collage illustrates the dramatic events before and after the 2009 presidential elections in Iran, sharing the feelings of the people behind the historic Green revolution.

On December 7th, 2005, federal agents conducted a nationwide sweep of radical environmentalists involved with the ELF, an organization the FBI has called America’s “#1 domestic terrorism threat.” This film is the remarkable story of the group’s rise and fall, told through the transformation and radicalization of one of its members, Daniel McGowan. Part coming-of-age tale, part cops-and-robbers thriller, the film interweaves a chronicle of McGowan facing life in prison, with a dramatic investigation of the events that led to his involvement with the ELF. Using never-before-seen archival footage and intimate interviews with cell members, the prosecutor and detective who were chasing them, the film asks hard questions about environmentalism, activism, and the way we define terrorism.

In 1958, the young French-Algerian couturier Yves Saint Laurent met and fell in love with the industrialist and patron Pierre Bergé, forging a relationship that would endure fifty years of extraordinary success, emotional turbulence and lingering devotion. In 2008, following the death of Saint Laurent, Bergé decided to auction off the art collection that was the result of their decades-spanning union, spread across three lavish homes, inside of which both men exercised a mutual passion for beauty — in objects, places, people, and, above all, through their personal and professional union. How does one walk away from so much beauty cultivated over time? Do we shape the things that surround us, or do those things shape us?

Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America and challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of them, making it difficult for them to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality--and not in her capacity as a leader.

For 12 years, film maker Leonard Retel Helmrich followed an Indonesian family from the slums of Jakarta and this resulted in the trilogy Eye of the Day, Shape of the Moon, Position among the Stars. In this third part Position among the Stars, the maker continues to show us the underlying patterns of life in Indonesia, both literally and metaphorically with his revolutionary camera work. The Sjamsuddin family is the microcosm of the most important issues of life in Indonesia: corruption, conflict between religions, gambling addiction, the generation gap and the growing difference between poor and rich.

In the wake of the turbulent ‘60s, a new style of song and songwriter came to the fore – a style marked by vulnerable introspection and raw, naked emotion. Backed by little more than a lone acoustic guitar or simple piano, these exciting voices descended upon Los Angeles, now emerging as the center of the American music scene. Their epicenter for self-expression became an old beatnik folk club and a fitting name: The Troubadour. The film traces Carole King, James Taylor and the singer/songwriter scene during the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. The film also interweaves the intriguing story of the ‘world famous’ Troubadour club that cemented their musical legacy. TROUBADOURS tells the story of when rock n’ roll grew up.

WE WERE HERE is the first documentary to take a deep and reflective look back at the arrival and impact of AIDS in San Francisco. It explores how the City’s inhabitants were affected by, and how they responded to, that calamitous epidemic. Though a San Francisco-based story, WE WERE HERE extends beyond San Francisco and beyond AIDS itself. It speaks to our capacity as individuals to rise to the occasion, and to the incredible power of a community coming together with love, compassion, and determination.

Wind power… it’s sustainable, it burns no fossil fuel, it produces no air pollution. What’s more, it cuts down dependency on foreign oil. That’s what the people of Meredith, NY first thought when a wind developer looked to supplement the rural farm town’s failing economy with a farm of their own and 40 industrial wind turbines. Israel’s film, documents how this proposal divides Meredith’s residents, as they fight over the future of their community. Attracted at first to the financial incentives that would seemingly boost their dying economy, the townspeople grow increasingly alarmed as they discover the impacts that the 400-foot high windmills slated for Meredith would bring to their community. WINDFALL looks at both sides of wind energy development.

An entertaining and revelatory “secret history” of Feminist Art, !W.A.R. deftly illuminates this under-explored movement through conversations, observations, archival footage and works of visionary artists, historians, curators and critics. Starting from its roots in 1960s antiwar and civil rights protests, the film details major developments in women’s art through the 1970s and explores how the tenacity and courage of these pioneering artists resulted in what is now widely regarded as the most significant art movement of the late 20th century. With a rousing score by Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein.

The film tells the unprecedented story of the return of the Wampanoag language, the first time a language with no speakers has been revived in a Native American community. The Wampanoag’s ancestors ensured the survival of the first English settlers in New England, the “Pilgrims,” and lived to regret it. A century ago, their language virtually disappeared. Spurred on by an indomitable Wampanoag woman named Jessie Little Doe Baird, recent MacArthur “genius” award winner, the Wampanoag are now saying loud and clear, and in their Native tongue, “Âs Nutayuneân,” We Still Live Here. The film interweaves contemporary, unfolding scenes of cultural revival with darkly animated historical events that nearly obliterated Wampanoag culture, and ends on a hopeful note, with an image of Jessie’s youngest daughter, the first Native speaker of Wampanoag in a century.

The celibate life isn’t for everyone. Sixteen-year-old Shakers Josiah and Miriam are getting ready to fly their spiritual community life in a Shaker village in order to live married in the world. On the road, they encounter a broken family, an older couple with two children, who have lost their faith in the romantic ideals of marriage and are seeking refuge inside the Shaker life. Should the youngsters leave the village, considering this older couple’s hardships? Set in 1850’s new England amidst the natural beauty of real Shaker villages and authentic shaker dancing and song, Come Life is a simple, meditative inquiry into questions of community and partnership.

A LETTER TO ELIA Writer: Martin Scorcese | Kent Jones Director: Kent Jones | Martin Scorcese US | 2010 | 60 min FILMMAKER and pittsfield native kent jones IN ATTENDANCE
Saturday, 1:30 PM - Beacon* *Q&A with Kent Jones to follow and screening of Kazan’s Wild River to follow after a brief break at 3:30 PM
For Martin Scorsese, growing up in Little Italy, seeing On the Waterfront and East of Eden as a young man was a life-changing experience. Scorsese appears on and off camera throughout A Letter to Elia, taking us through Kazan’s life and through his own as well, and through his growing realization that there was an artist behind the camera, someone “who knew me, maybe better than I knew myself.” The film is about being exposed to the right movies at the right moment in your adolescent life, when you’re wide open and ready to connect, to be spurred on by the work up there on the screen, and then, maybe, to chart a course toward making your own movies. Composed of clips, stills, readings from Kazan’s autobiography and his speech on directing (read by Elias Koteas), a videotaped interview done late in Kazan’s life, and Scorsese’s commentary on and offscreen, A Letter to Elia takes a close look at the life of art and its creation – the work, the distractions, the inspirations, the complications, the intersections between art and experience. A Letter to Elia, written and directed by Scorsese and his longtime collaborator Kent Jones, is a deeply personal film, a frank portrait and self-portrait, and an equally frank acknowledgement of the closeness and the distance between artists and their art. The film was awarded the prestigious 2010 Peabody Award.

The S&P 500 Index (S&P) has been used as a comparative benchmark because the goal of the above strategy was to provide equity-like returns. The S&P is one of the world’s most recognized indexes by investors and the investment industry for the equity market. The S&P, however, is not a managed portfolio and is not subject to advisory fees or trading costs. Investors cannot invest directly in the S&P 500 Index. The S&P returns also reflect the reinvestment of dividends. Berkshire Money Management is aware of the benchmark comparison guidelines set forward in the SEC Clover No-Action Letter (1986) and compares clients’ performance results to a benchmark or a combination of benchmarks most closely resembling clients’ actual portfolio holdings. However, investors should be aware that the referenced benchmark funds may have a different composition, volatility, risk, investment philosophy, holding times, and/or other investment-related factors that may affect the benchmark funds’ ultimate performance results. Therefore, an investor’s individual results may vary significantly from the benchmark’s performance. All indicated stock market calls and associated commentary are that of Allen Harris & Berkshire Money Management and have no relationship to NDR/MDR.
