HAS IT REALLY BEEN 10 YEARS? A FULL DECADE? WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DECADE CAN MAKE!

But I want to thank everyone here in the Berkshires for supporting this endeavor, this dream, this vision, to create “the BIFF.” A great many people have spent the entire year (make that 10!) helping to make this festival so special for our community. I must thank my incredibly dedicated and selfless board of directors and staff, the endless and supportive efforts of the advisory board and programming producers, our Tenth Year Anniversary Gala Chairs and Committee, the generous support and loyalty of our sponsors, the energy and spirit of our volunteers, my PIC and the Triplex, Beacon and Mahaiwe staff, as well as the towns of Great Barrington and Pittsfield and the support of their merchants, restaurantowners and selectmen. And perhaps the strangest part of our first decade was that I started BIFF so I could have a job and be a stay-at-home mom. And now my kids have grown up and are all out of the house pursuing their passions and dreams...wow, what a difference a decade makes! Here’s to the Berkshires, here’s to the filmmakers and their films, and here’s to the BIFF!

“ROLL CAMERA!”

BIFFMA.ORG #BIFFMA

We kicked off this 10th anniversary season with an unforgettable gala at the Great Barrington airport under beautiful late summer skies. We celebrated Governor Deval and First Lady Diane Patrick, who were about to finish their 8 years in the Statehouse, (!) and we celebrated with nearly 300 friends, including a wonderful video from James and Kim Taylor. Since then, we have hosted dozens of special events, screenings, reunions, and collaborations in New York City and the Berkshires...it’s been

quite a celebration! It all culminates in this 4-day Festival for which we’ve scoured the far reaches of the world and our own back yard, so we could curate and bring you the very best in independent film. We have a record number of filmmakers and industry professionals who are traveling from as far away as Krygyzstan!

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS MAY 28 - 31, 2015

Some of you will remember when BIFF first opened on a warm Spring evening in May, with the film A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION. We had a sold-out audience at the Triplex and a modest party at Pearl’s. That weekend, BIFF showcased 40 premieres of independent films over a 2-day weekend. The Mahaiwe was not open, the Beacon was not open, the Triplex had not built the Screening Room and Deval Patrick was running for Governor! Well, we’ve come a long way, baby. BIFF has doubled the number of screened films, doubled the number of screens, doubled the number of locations for our screenings, doubled the length of the festival, tripled the number of filmmakers and industry professionals in attendance to share their films, created a year-round organization dedicated to celebrating the best of independent film and we’re bringing the world to the Berkshires! As a community we share that growth, because without a supportive, engaged, involved and dynamic community, filmmakers and distribution companies would take their films and talents elsewhere. But they don’t...they bring them to BIFF. I hope you share in the pride we feel when our community not only showcases the best in dance, music, theater, and art, but also has a world-class film festival that attracts the best in film and the most talked-about filmmakers each year.

Peggy Guggenheim collected not only art, but artists. Her colorful history included affairs with such figures as Samuel Beckett, Max Ernst, Jackson Pollock, Marcel Duchamp and while she fought through personal tragedy, she maintained her vision to build one of the most important collections of modern art, which is today enshrined in her Venetian palazzo. Based on her sole authorized biography from the director of “Diana Vreeland the Eye Has to Travel,” PEGGY GUGGENHEIM is a compendium of the greatest 20th century art mixed with the wild and iconoclastic life of one of the most powerful women in the history of the art world.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS MAY 28 - 31, 2015

“LIVE FROM NEW YORK!” is a feature documentary exploring the cultural and historical impact of 40 years of "Saturday Night Live.” Saturday Night Live has been reflecting and influencing the American Story for 40 years. Live From New York! explores the show’s early years, an experiment from a young Lorne Michaels and his cast of unknowns, and follows its evolution into a comedy institution. The film looks at SNL as a living time capsule, encompassing decades of American politics, media, tragedy, and popular culture with an irreverent edge. Archival footage is interwoven with stolen moments and exclusive commentary from SNL legends, journalists, hosts, musical guests, crew and others influenced by the comedy giant. LIVE FROM NEW YORK! captures what has enabled SNL to continually refresh itself over nearly 800 episodes and keep America laughing for 40 years.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS MAY 28 - 31, 2015

THE END OF THE TOUR tells the story of the five-day 1996 interview between Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky (Eisenberg) and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace (Segel), which took place right after the 1996 publication of Wallace’s groundbreaking, Infinite Jest. As the days go on, the men bob and weave around each other, sharing laughs and also possibly revealing hidden frailties – but it’s never clear how truthful they are being . Ironically, the interview was never published. The two men did not meet again. The film is based on Lipsky’s critically acclaimed memoir about this unforgettable encounter, written following Wallace’s 2008 suicide.

Berkshire Bank, America’s Most Exciting BankSM, in collaboration with the Berkshire International Film Festival, has created The Next Great Filmmaker Award 6 years ago.

BELTRACCHI THE ART OF FORGERY

For me, there is nothing more satisfying than connecting significant, challenging new films from around the world with the fantastic, curious and responsive audience we have here in the Berkshires. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to program films that confront difficult, sensitive issues, whether through fiction or documentary; films that create dialogue around the burning issues of our times.

ABERDEEN

France, 2014, 110 min

Hong Kong/China, 2014, 97 min

January 20, 2006: after dinner with his family, Ilan Halimi gets a call from a beautiful girl who had approached him at work and makes plans to meet her for coffee. Ilan didn’t suspect a thing. He was 23 and had his whole life ahead of him. The next time Ilan’s family heard from him was through a cryptic online message from kidnappers demanding ransom in exchange for their son’s life. Based on a book co-written by the victim’s mother, this cinematic adaptation offers a harrowing view into this ordeal: from his kidnapping and torture at the hands of the Gang of Barbarians, to the nearly 700 phone calls, insults, and threats received by his family. Meanwhile the Parisian police fail to recognize the antiSemitic hatred of his abductors.

ABERDEEN revolves around the extended Cheng family, which, like Aberdeen harbor’s Chinese namesake, represents today’s “Little Hong Kong” and its myriad of contradictions between traditions and modernity; superstitions and materialism; family and individuality. Maha has always been passionate about film, and as a set designer she’s become an expert at creating imaginary worlds. Under immense pressure at work, she sights another life on the horizon and begins slipping between realities—one resembling the film set she’s designed and the other her supposed real life. As she grows ever more entangled in each, the border between the real and imagined becomes blurred. Maha walks a fine line between her parallel lives, and must decide for the first time what she truly desires.

THE NEW GIRLFRIEND

RESULTS

France, 2014, 105 min

Recently divorced, newly rich, and utterly miserable, Danny (Corrigan) would seem to be the perfect test subject for a definitive look at the relationship between money and happiness. Danny’s well-funded ennui is interrupted by a momentous trip to the local gym, where he meets self-styled guru/owner Trevor (Pearce) and irresistibly acerbic trainer Kat (Smulders). Soon, their three lives are inextricably knotted, both professionally and personally. The end result is a charming shaggy-dog tale that’s been hitting the gym: taut, limber, and powerful.

In acclaimed writer-director Francois Ozon’s provocative new film, Claire (rising French star Anais Demoustier) befriends David (Romain Duris), the husband of her recently deceased best friend, Laura. But when the widowed David reveals his deepest secret to Claire, their newfound friendship is tested, forcing Claire to explore her own unexpected feelings and desires. With dashes of George Cukor and Douglas Sirk, THE NEW GIRLFRIEND is Ozon at his finest: a witty yet moving exploration of the boundaries of sexuality that imaginatively depicts the flexibility of love in our modern age. THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT USA, 2015, 122 It is the summer of 1971. Dr. Philip Zimbardo launches a study on the psychology of imprisonment. Twentyfour male undergraduates are randomly assigned to be either a guard or a prisoner. Set in a simulated jail, the project unfolds. The participants rapidly embody their roles—the guards become power-hungry and sadistic, while the prisoners, subject to degradation, strategize as underdogs. It soon becomes clear that, as Zimbardo and team monitor the escalation of action through surveillance cameras, they are not fully aware of how they, too, have become part of the experiment. Based on the reallife research of Dr. Zimbardo (who was a consultant on the film), this period piece remains relevant 40 years later. An intense, visceral film about the role of power that plays to both chilling and exhilarating effect. BELTRACCHI THE ART OF FORGERY

BEST OF ENEMIES

Germany, 2014, 93 min

Dead last in the ratings, ABC hired two towering public intellectuals to debate each other during the 1968 Democratic and Republican national conventions. William F. Buckley Jr. was a leading light of the new conservative movement. A Democrat and cousin to Jackie Onassis, Gore Vidal was a leftist novelist and polemicist. Like rounds in a heavyweight battle, they pummeled out policy and personal insult—their explosive exchanges devolving into vitriolic name-calling. Live and unscripted, they kept viewers riveted. Ratings for ABC News skyrocketed. And a new era in public discourse was born. Directed by Academy Award-winning alum, Best of Enemies unleashes a highbrow blood sport that marked the dawn of pundit television as we know it today.

For nearly 40 years, Wolfgang Beltracchi was responsible for the biggest art forgery of the postwar era. He found gaps in the oeuvres of great artists – Max Ernst, André Derain and Max Pechstein above all – and filled them with his own. Auctioneers at Sotheby’s and Christie’s were hoodwinked, just like Hollywood star Steve Martin and collectors worldwide. In BELTRACCHI THE ART OF FORGERY, Wolfgang chats openly about his quixotic adventures in an art world ruled by blind greed and the unanswerable question: what is an original and what is a forgery. CITY OF GOLD

USA/Mexico, 2015, 98 min

USA, 2014, 91 min

CARTEL LAND is a harrowing look at the journeys of two modern-day vigilante groups and their shared enemy – the murderous Mexican drug cartels. In the Mexican state of Michoacán, a smalltown physician leads an uprising against a violent drug cartel that has wreaked havoc on the region. Meanwhile, in a 52-mile-long desert corridor known as Cocaine Alley, an American veteran heads a paramilitary group whose goal is to stop Mexico’s drug wars from seeping into Arizona. CARTEL LAND is a chilling meditation on the breakdown of order and the blurry line between good and evil.

CITY OF GOLD chronicles Pulitzer Prizewinning restaurant critic Jonathan Gold’s relationship to his beloved and sprawling metropolis, Los Angeles. Gold has long been adored in his hometown for his cultural writing about LA’s hidden culinary treasures; he was one of the first critics to review small family owned restaurants in far-flung ethnic enclaves with as much passion as the haute cuisine establishments of Beverly Hills. With a stroke of his pen, he’s changed the lives of countless immigrant chefs, newly discovered by voracious foodies who avidly track his reviews. CITY OF GOLD explores the rigor, knowledge, and curiosity that make Gold’s style of criticism nationally recognized. Mapping Los Angeles through his Odyssey-like quests for new food experiences, Jonathan Gold reveals a complex, paradoxical urban landscape that will surprise newcomers and locals alike.

FRAME BY FRAME

USA, 2014, 93 min

Afghanistan, 2015, 85 min

Amid the seismic cultural shift of the 1970s, American comedy got a sharper edge when a newly minted magazine named National Lampoon stuck its middle finger up at the establishment. Lampoon’s irreverence spanked nearly every available social taboo and exploded onto America’s cultural consciousness attracting talents as Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Bill Murray, and Chevy Chase. Douglas Tirola weaves neverbefore-seen footage together with the magazine’s beautiful and often shocking art, reliving National Lampoon’s meteoric rise from counterculture to a brand synonymous with Hollywood’s biggest comedies. Energetic, revolutionary, gently perverted, and often hilarious, DRUNK STONED BRILLIANT DEAD elevates nostalgia to a roof-raising experience.

When the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, taking a photo was a crime. After the regime fell in 2001, a fledgling free press emerged and a photography revolution was born. As foreign troops withdraw, Afghan journalists are left to stand on their own. Set in a modern Afghanistan bursting with color and character, FRAME BY FRAME follows four Afghan photojournalists who navigate a dangerous media landscape to reframe Afghanistan for the world. Through cinema vérité, photojournalism, and never-before-seen footage shot during the Taliban, the film reveals the realities of building free press.

FROM THIS DAY FORWARD

HOW TO DANCE IN OHIO

USA, 2015, 80 min

USA, 2015, 88 min

FROM THIS DAY FORWARD is a moving portrayal of an American family coping with the most intimate of transformations. When director Sharon Shattuck’s father came out as transgender and changed her name to Trisha, Sharon was in the awkward throes of middle school. Her father’s transition to female was difficult for her straight-identified mother, Marcia, to accept, but her parents stayed together. As the Shattucks reunite to plan Sharon’s wedding, she seeks a deeper understanding of how her parents’ marriage survived the radical changes that threatened to tear their family apart.

In Columbus, Ohio, a group of teenagers and young adults on the autism spectrum prepare for an iconic American rite of passage -- a Spring Formal. They spend 12 weeks practicing their social skills in preparation for the dance at a local nightclub. Working with their psychologist, they take the challenges expressed in their respective therapy groups from one level to the next: picking dates, dresses, and, ultimately, a King and Queen of the Prom. MADINA’S DREAM

USA, 2014, 80 min

USA, 2015, 82 min

A document of Jon Imber’s courageous and sometimes darkly humorous response to a death sentence, a diagnosis of ALS. The film traces the artist’s life, career, and adaptations, switching from painting from his right hand to his left, and then to both hands held at his waist as the degenerative condition progresses. Adversity only makes him more determined to paint, and paint he does: more than 100 portraits in a four month span. We first encounter Imber in his studio for the first time painting with his left hand while he and his partner, painter Jill Hoy, analyze Jon’s self-portrait and talk about the anxiety to come. The painting becomes an unsettling metaphor of his psychological journey living into his dying through his art.

An unflinching and poetic glimpse into a forgotten war, MADINA’S DREAM tells the story of rebels and refugees fighting to survive in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains. After decades of civil war, South Sudan achieved its independence from Sudan in 2011. But inside Sudan, the conflict continues. Sudan’s government employs aerial bombings and starvation warfare against the inhabitants of the Nuba Mountains. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have fled to refugee camps in South Sudan or remain trapped in the war zone. Eleven-year-old Madina and countless others dream of a brighter future for the Nuban people.

THE MAN WHO SAVED THE WORLD

ROMEO IS BLEEDING

Denmark, 2014, 105 min

A fatal turf war between neighborhoods haunts the city of Richmond, CA. Donté Clark transcends the violence in his hometown by writing poetry about his experiences. Using his voice to inspire those around him, he and the likeminded youth of the city mount an urban adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with the hope of starting a real dialogue about violence in the city. Will Richmond force Donté to compromise his idealistic ambitions? Or will Donté end Richmond’s cycle of trauma?

On September 26th, 1983, nuclear alarms indicated that five American missiles had been launched against the USSR. Russian Lt. Colonel Stanislav Petrov defied the system and ignored the warning systems. He followed his instinct and decided it was a false alarm. His decision saved the world from nuclear holocaust. Two decades later, this forgotten hero finally receives acknowledgement by the UN for his historical deed. THE MAN WHO SAVED THE WORLD seamlessly mixes extraordinarily accurate and compelling reenactments of the 1983 incident with Stanislav’s current day roadtrip across America seeing the missiles for himself and visiting his idol Kevin Costner. In the 1950s, Tab Hunter is number one at the box office and on the music charts. He is Hollywood’s most sought-after star and America’s boy next door. Natalie Wood, Debbie Reynolds and Sophia Loren are just a few of the actresses he is romantically linked to. Nothing, it seems, can damage Tab Hunter’s career. Nothing, that is, except for the fact that he’s secretly gay. Featuring John Waters, Clint Eastwood, George Takei, and Debbie Reynolds, in TAB HUNTER CONFIDENTIAL, the real Tab Hunter shares the story of a happy, healthy survivor of Hollywood’s roller coaster.

WELCOME TO LEITH

THE WOLFPACK

USA, 2015, 85 min

The six Angulo brothers spent their entire lives locked in a Lower East Side apartment. Nicknamed “The Wolfpack,” they’re all bright, homeschooled, and have practically never left their home. All they know of the outside world is gleaned from the films they watch obsessively and recreate meticulously. But after one of the brothers escapes the apartment (wearing a Michael Meyers mask for protection), the power dynamics in the house are transformed, and all the boys begin to dream of venturing out. Capturing the thrill of the Wolfpack’s discoveries without skirting the darker questions of abuse and confinement, THE WOLFPACK charts a fascinating coming of age story and a true example of the power of movies to transform and save lives.

WELCOME TO LEITH is a feature documentary chronicling the attempted takeover of a small town in North Dakota by notorious white supremacist Craig Cobb. As his behavior becomes more threatening, tensions soar, and the residents desperately look for ways to expel their unwanted neighbor. The unsettling underpinning of the film is how we wrestle with our democratic principles when they’re pushed to the limit. Directors // Michael Beach Nichols, Christopher K. MESOCOSM An ongoing series of animated landscapes that develop and change over time in response to probability equations that trigger narrative elements, MESOCOSM is drawn by hand, frame-by-frame, yet its choreography is dynamic—not predetermined or linear—and runs in realtime. The cycle has no fixed beginning or end. Northumberland, UK is an algorithmic work, representing the passage of time on the moors of Northeast England. One hour of world time elapses in each minute of screen time, so that one year lasts 146 hours. The man with his back to us is a character based on Lucian Freud’s painting of Leigh Bowery, the performance artist, designer, and drag queen whose larger than life personality helped to catalyze the interdisciplinary experimental art scene in London in the 1980s. Wink, TX is located on private oil company property—boils, gushes, flows and expels objects: plastic bags, oil and dark clouds that whirl out of the sinkhole’s vortex in ghostly choreography. This sinkhole has been widening steadily since it emerged in 2002. Presented as a variable format triptych on three flat screens or projections, Times Square loosely corresponds to the spatiotemporal organization of Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. “Sometimes you meet someone, and it’s so clear that the two of you, on some level belong together. As lovers, or as friends, or as family, or as something entirely different. You just work, whether you understand one another or you’re in love or you’re partners in crime. You meet these people throughout your life, out of nowhere, under the strangest circumstances, and they help you feel alive. IT’S ME, HILARY: THE MAN WHO DREW ELOISE

THE PAPER TRAIL

USA, 2015, 36 min

A collection of authors and colleagues, many based in the Berkshire literary belt, reflect on when and why they began reading and writing. In one on one interviews, Susan Orlean, Simon Winchester, Luc Sante, John Patrick Shanley, Courtney Maum, Steve Heller and others weigh whether the push for speed necessarily pays off — and conclude it can still take a long time to craft a good story.

A portrait of the artist behind the iconic “Eloise” books, as he reflects on his life as an illustrator and his relationship to his most successful work. At 88, Hilary Knight has the desire to work but limited access to the subject he would most like to work with: Eloise. What emerges is a portrait of an artist stunted by early success and haunted by personal failures, deeply devoted to his most famous creation.

We knew that the BIFF was unique in its first year. The honoree was a local guy, Mike Haley, who was Mike Nichols’s 1st AD on more than 12 films. That wonderful party included a film tribute to Haley and a roster of illustrious guests. Nichols came to honor Haley, Leonard Nimoy was there, Andrew Bergman, writer of Blazing Saddles, and the president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Sid Ganis. The BIFF is grassroots but it brings the world to the Berkshires with soul, style and substance. TOM AND SUKY WERMAN (ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS)
