1930’s TIPS

ZERO WASTE

Grow a garden. In 1929, 20% of Americans lived on farms. Large family and community gardens were a common way for people to get food.

Food WASTE Be mindful about food waste. No part of an animal was wasted. Each part of an animal was used in a creative way, from storing fat to boiling feet for broth.

SECOND HAND

Buy secondhand. When kids outgrew their clothes they were given to people in need or passed down to younger siblings.

↖ Recycle. Used, old clothing was cut up to use as rags for various purposes from dusting to dish washing.

S H A R E

Share resources. People shared the produce they grew with their community in order to keep variety in their diets.
