Administrative Professional Graduate Increases Her Workplace Worth

“Education never stops.”

This is one of the many credos valued by Delores Armstead. The quintessential example of a lifelong learner, Armstead discovered Kennesaw State after her daughter began attending as an undergraduate. The Oxford, N.C., native knew she wanted to pursue a career that matched her strengths. “I’ve always had great secretarial and computer skills,” she said. Once again, due to her daughter’s influence, Armstead found herself at KSU Center – home of the College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE). In an effort to sharpen her computer skills, Armstead earned her Microsoft Office certificate. The program is comprised of classes in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. Upon completion, she decided to pursue a legal interest and began work in our Paralegal certificate program. After finishing a few of the program’s required 13 classes, Armstead landed a full-time role as a member of a legal affairs team. She entered that position with an extensive background in law office management and legal support experience with corporate in-house counsel, shareholders and law firms – based on her past employment and continuing education course work.

The coursework has given me greater confidence and effectiveness in that I can meet and exceed the expectations set forth in my position.

Delores Armstead, Administrative Professional Graduate

4 APRIL - JUNE 2017 // 470-578-6765 // ccpe.kennesaw.edu

Armstead’s first order of business was to request permission from her supervisor to complete our Paralegal program. Instead, he recommended CCPE’s Administrative Professional certificate course. Previously unaware of the class, Armstead is now thankful for the opportunity it presented. “The course was so informative and very detailed,” she said. “Nothing went uncovered.” Reflecting more on her experience in the Administrative Professional program, Armstead said it allowed her to enhance the level of excellence and diligence needed to support key attorneys and their direct reports by effectively managing key priorities. “The coursework has given me greater confidence and effectiveness in that I can meet and exceed the expectations set forth in my position,” she said. “More importantly, it has allowed me to communicate with others by enhancing my communications skills, productivity and my professional development to build a network outside of legal affairs. My interpersonal skills have been strengthened, producing improved working relationships with colleagues at all levels.” When asked about the most important aspects she learned in the course, Armstead cited calendar management, effective correspondence, memorandums, preparing a filing system, effective PowerPoint presentations, customer service, honing computer skills, organizational abilities, and expense reporting and developing a travel portfolio for the executive. Armstead boasted, “I have gained a wealth of knowledge in office efficiency taught by some amazing instructors. It has certainly attributed to effective learning, success-building techniques and strategies that are vital in achieving workplace goals and objectives.” As she continues her journey in lifelong learning, Armstead plans to return to CCPE to complete her Paralegal certificate in an effort to become an even more valuable member of her organization.

WHO NEEDS CUSTOMER SERVICE?

W

Instructor Tracey Carter Reveals Why New Customer Service Specialist Program Is Vital

With the increase of technology,

human interaction with customers has become critical. Whether it relates to retention, serving your audience, or converting inquiries into sales, superior customer service is vital in organizational success. In fact, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of customer service representatives is projected to grow 13% through 2022. In a Q&A with program instructor Tracey Carter, she explains why honing your skills in this certificate training program will benefit you in a wide range of positions. Share a little bit of your background and how it relates to teaching this class. I have over 20 years of professional experience. I currently manage a call center for a utility company. I have held positions that provided internal customer service to my co-workers as well as external customer service for clients doing business with my organization. Give us an overview of the class. What can students expect to learn? The class is designed to teach the skills necessary to give optimal customer service. Because in most organizations, customer service is entry into the company, we also focus on

professional and entry-level management skills. Students that receive the Customer Service Specialist certificate are well equipped to provide not only excellent customer service skills, but are also prepared to be a polished professional addition to any organization. Who is the ideal student for this class? Any person that provides customer support externally and internally is an ideal candidate. The class focuses on support for call centers, in-person contact and sales positions. Why is this class important? Organizations generally utilize their customer service roles as entry-level positions. Frequently, depending on the business, the customer service staff is the face of the organization and has the capability of bringing a great deal of success or failure to a company. What types of industries/employers are looking for customer service professionals? Many large, reputable companies have call centers that staff customer service representatives. Verizon, Home Depot, Bank of America and Gas South are all good examples of this. Additionally, there is Carvana in the car sales industry.

Success Looks Like

NATALIA HIGGINS

I

In 2015, Natalia M. Higgins

graced the cover of this magazine and shared her success in the payroll industry. She’d completed the PayTrain® Fundamentals Certificate program, passed her national certification exam, and earned a promotion as a result. Since that time, Natalia has earned regional and national awards for her determination and dedication to her career field and lifelong learning. “My career is successful because of my education,” Natalia Higgins told a crowd of more than 600 attending the awards luncheon at the 101st annual UPCEA Conference in San Diego in 2016. It was the central message of her acceptance speech as she received the Outstanding Continuing Education Student Award, an annual honor given by the University Professional & Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) to a student who achieves excellence in the pursuit of educational goals. In 2014, shortly after earning her Executive MBA, Natalia enrolled in PayTrain® Fundamentals, the first course in our Payroll Certificate program. She went on to take and pass the Fundamental Payroll Certification exam, a national credential administered by the American Payroll Association. As a result of her success, she was offered a promotion. Natalia currently serves as the director of Client Account Management at ADP, one of the world’s largest payroll companies. “I commend her for her fortitude to take on a new challenging role with her company while also

devoting many hours a week to attend and study the material for the class,” said her former instructor, Lucinda Ramondetta, CPP, in a letter of recommendation for the award. “Natalia did an excellent job in the course and passed with confidence.” Natalia was first recognized for this award at the regional level in 2015 by UPCEA South before being selected as the national winner. “The experience has been amazing,” she said. “The most important thing to me is being able to be an example. My goal is to continue to inspire other students.” Natalia said education is essential to career growth and success. And she’s still learning, too. She completed the Human Resources Management SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP Certificate in April 2016 and is studying for the certification exam. Her advice to individuals looking to reach their personal best? “First, have your priorities straight,” she said. “Second, making time for yourself and your education will make you better — as an individual and a professional.”

Web Design & Development Certificate

Unleash your creativity and gain invaluable career training in the high-demand field of web design. With projections of a 20% job increase through 2020, along with potential six-figure salaries (Bureau of Labor Statistics), this intensive nine-month course will instill you with the integral design principles and industry tools to put you at the forefront of technology. This is achieved by mastering and executing the following four modules:

Module 3 Development

Module 1 Discovery

Design can captures a visitor’s attention, but successful Web designers must also be adept with industry tools and practices such as search engine optimization (SEO) and Web analytics to drive traffic to their sites. Students will learn CMS basics, how to use version control for their code and gain confidence in committing changes to public repositories. Textbooks are required at the first class meeting and are available at the KSU Center bookstore. A BlueHost account is optional for the second half of class. Internet access is also required.

This foundational module will expose students to design principles, usability, the Web development process and file basics. You will learn how to scope a project, design applying usability-based ideas and create assets for your sites, including logos and other content. Additionally, an introduction to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator will provide the essential knowledge needed to begin producing website designs.

Module 2 Design

Students will begin applying design principles learned in Module 1 to Web page layout. Multiple design ideas and complete website designs will be accomplished through the practices learned in Module 1. Designing for multiple screens and further design theory will be discussed concerning how to produce elements as designers specifically for the web. Students will continue to improve design skills and generate working design comps through group and individual projects, and introduce Dreamweaver into the workflow.

Though HTML and CSS provide the foundation for much of the Web, modern websites interactively engage visitors. In this module, students will use JavaScript to provide such interactivity. Students will also learn vanilla JavaScript and use libraries like JQuery and MooTools, as well as PHP for building functionality into websites.

Module 4 Deployment

I took the Web Design class so that I could work from home and just make a living while still being home with my kids. It was a lot of work but it was really rewarding.

The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point, and then back out again. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. HISTORY Spirits of The Great American West

This class is a very unique look at American History westward from the Mississippi River to California. Major historical events are chronologically tied together with personal accounts, legends and myths. Little known and rarely addressed events and characters are woven together in a classroom lecture & group discussion environment using source documents and hard copy maps. Some historical questions are addressed, but are left as “histories mysteries” since there are no complete explanations that resolve them. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one. Students find that Quentin Thomas, a recognized historian, author and cowboy poet, is an entertaining, informative and enlightening instructor. $99, 12 Hrs Instructor(s): Quentin Thomas 04/05/17 - 05/24/17 8 Session(s) Wed 10AM - 11:30AM Course# 174SHIS2565A NEW COURSE

Faces of “America’s Greatest Generations” Since 1776

The “American Experience,” sometimes called the “American Dream” rises from the ashes of war again and again since the founding of the American nation in the late 18th century. In the 19th century the term “Manifest Destiny” exploded to the forefront of the explanations and justifications for frontier “pioneers” to patriotically fill in all that land between both oceans no matter the personal sacrifice. The 20th century, pockmarked with a new form of poverty and massive systems failure, resonates to this day with the hopes and achievements of successfully “Making the World Safe for Democracy.” Our 21st century mantras have often clustered around themes of multiple faces of “Keep America Great”...students will leave this course knowing why. $129, 16 Hrs Instructor(s): Russell Osmond 04/04/17 - 05/23/17 8 Session(s) Tue 7PM - 9PM Course# 174SHIS2615A

Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Trained and Certified Labyrinth Facilitator. We move on to look at how the defenders establish winners and take their sure tricks. Then we see how the defenders can interfere with declarer’s plan to make the contract. Finally, we take a look at how the defenders formulate their plan and put it into action. This course does not require completion of the first two courses in the series but it is recommended that the student consider taking those classes prior to taking this class. $99, 16 Hrs Instructor(s): Margaret Peabody 04/25/17 - 06/13/17 8 Session(s) Tue 1PM - 3PM Course# 174SHRC1058A

The mixture of academics plus a creative atmosphere result in a one-of-a-kind experience. “Last year was our biggest turnout to date,” said Andrea Cochran, program director. “We always look forward to camp season because it adds an extra level of energy in our building. This year, we’re excited to introduce many new camps.” New camp offerings are highlighted by Extraordinary Earth, Capture It! Photography, Interior Decorating for Teens, Junior Detectives, Persuasive Presentations and Debates, The Creative Writer, Little Coders and Pinterest Crafting. Back by popular demand is the return of the Chet Austin Teen Leadership Academy. Team building, community service and public speaking are all slated for this weeklong session named for the former CEO of Tip Top Poultry. SummerU starts June 5 and ends July 21. Camps are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at KSU Center. Parents can drop off children beginning at 8:30 a.m., and Extended Care is available until 6 p.m. for an additional fee.
