Pedorthist Certificate
This certificate program is one of only three accredited training courses in the country currently offering the new Pedorthic curriculum. Uniquely partnered with the Foot Solutions Academy of Pedorthic Science, the class provides a review of human anatomy including muscles, nerves, bones and skin with a focus on the feet. Theory and actual practice of orthotics, therapeutic shoes, modifications and custom design are included as well as CAD/CAM technology. Students perfect their
skills in practice labs within a working state of the art orthotics laboratory. A successful Pedorthist specializes in comprehensive patient foot care using therapeutic footwear and supportive orthotic devices (arch supports), and designs and creates therapeutic shoes, foot orthoses, custom shoes, ankle-foot orthotics, and fillers for partial foot amputations. “The program was very beneficial in providing the classroom knowledge necessary for the Pedorthic practice,” said Terry Reed, 2014 graduate. “No stone was left unturned from anatomy, to orthotics, to Medicare guidelines, and everything in between. The lab time was very informative, giving hands-on exposure to a wide variety of equipment and various methodologies for working with peoples’ feet.”
Those interested in obtaining a Patient Care Technician (CPCT) national certification may be eligible to take the national exam upon successful completion of the following certificate programs offered by KSU: Certified Nursing Assistant, EKG Technician, and Phlebotomy Technician. Experience may be substituted in lieu of a KSU Certificate and will be evaluated by the testing organization on an individual basis as criteria for meeting the exam eligibility requirements.

Earning a professional certificate
can create many new opportunities. For TESOL graduate Morgan Attaway, it first helped her land a job teaching English in Atlanta. It also provided her the skills to develop a curriculum for a new Training for International Educators program at KSU, which led to a trip to Israel. She then embarked on her next great adventure — the Japanese Teaching & Exchange (JET) Program at her new home base of Obama City, Japan. “It feels like I have lived here for years, while at the same time it seems like only yesterday I stepped off the plane in Tokyo,” Attaway said. “This fresh off the boat feeling is at its strongest when I am in the midst of giving what is called in Japanese the jiko shokai — better known as a self-introduction.” Attaway’s first week in the classroom consisted solely of jiko shokai delivered to 11 different Japanese high school classes of varying English ability. Not only was she sharing her life story 11 times but she was doing so by being genki (happy, positive, energetic) for every delivery. “You quickly come to realize what works and what doesn’t,” she said. “In my position, the jiko shokai are expected by my school, but you might be given the option of whether or not you would like to do one,” Attaway said. “I say do what feels right for the class. If you have some extra time, even just a few minutes, it can make all the difference in the world to help your students get to know you more as a person than just as an intimidating English machine. Attaway has proven what continuing education, passion and desire can lead to. Are you the next Morgan Attaway?

The Labyrinth – A Walking Meditation
The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point, and then back
out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Labyrinth Facilitator. The Labyrinth – A Walking Meditation
The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point, and then back out again. Extended labyrinth walk, meditation and journal writing time from 3:00 – 5:00PM.

HISTORY Civil War in the Western Theater
From the 1862 capture of Forts Henry and Donelson, to 1864’s March to the Sea, many pivotal campaigns and battles during the American Civil War took place in the Western Theater. This area of operations consisted of all the geographic territory west of the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River. During the course, we will explore military action at Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and many other battles! Students will also learn about the commanding officers involved in an area, which most historians agree decided the outcome of the war. Spirits of The Great American West
This class is a very unique look at American History westward from the Mississippi River to California. Major historical events are chronologically tied together with personal accounts, legends and myths. Some historical questions are addressed, but are left as “histories mysteries” since there are no complete explanations that resolve them. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one.
Students find that Quentin, who is a recognized historian, author, and cowboy poet entertaining, informative, and enlightening. $99, 12 Hours Q. M. KSU Comes Full Circle
A
with Polish educators
A group of five Polish educators from the University of Rzeszow visited KSU’s College of Continuing and Professional Education from Nov. 8-16 to learn about best practices for teacher education. KSU’s connection with Poland began in 1996 with Barbara S. Calhoun, dean of the College. “A colleague and I wrote an 80-hour curriculum on how to establish continuing education programs in European universities where those programs had never existed before,” Calhoun said. “We delivered that training three different times over a 10-year period to over 15 different universities.” Dr. Steve Rebisz, assistant professor at University of Rzeszow, was in one of the original training groups. He and Calhoun have
continued to collaborate and visit each other’s respective countries for further education and training. During their recent trip to KSU, the group visited an elementary, middle and high school. They also spent time with faculty in KSU’s Bagwell College of Education where both groups shared information about higher education. Additional activities included a dinner event at Serenbe and a visit to the Georgia Aquarium. On Nov. 14, a reception was held at KSU Center where the educators met additional members of KSU’s continuing education staff. Dr. Richard Peczkowski, dean at University of Rzeszow, said, “Where there is a will of collaboration, there are no boundaries that can’t be crossed.”
