(Hold that thought – let me clarify.) For many of us, 20-60 hours of our week is spent making a living. There is a variety of existing career fields, whether you work for someone else or call your own shots. But how do you feel about what you do? Is it invigorating or debilitating? Crunching numbers at a tax accounting firm began to run its course for Wendy Tartaglia, our featured graduate. This former KSU student yearned for something different, and a tip from a pharmacist about continuing education led Wendy back to her old stomping grounds and to a satisfying new career. She enrolled in our Pharmacy Technician certificate program, opting for our new daytime course. The class format as well as mentorship from award-winning instructor Tim Sanders, R.Ph., was instrumental in Wendy’s outcome. Learn more about her achievements on page 16. Now, back to my question: Are you bored? If your answer is “yes,” then let us help you find and pursue your passion. It’s a new year – make the most of it. Say yes to your success!

Pharmacy Technician Grad Lands Rewarding Job in the Field
OCCUPATIONAL TRENDS • Employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 12% through 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. • Increased demand for prescription medications will lead to more demand for pharmaceutical services. • Pharmacy technicians with formal education or training, previous work experience, and national certification will be specifically sought after to meet these demands. As she sat at her desk processing
tax returns, Wendy Tartaglia realized her job at a tax accounting firm wasn’t for her. Ready for a change, she wanted to do something that fit her family better and paid a higher income. Already familiar with KSU during her time as an undergraduate, Tartaglia, now a wife and mother of two teenagers, didn’t have the time to invest in returning to complete her degree. Then a chance conversation changed her future. “I wanted to do something that provided a quicker path to making more money,” Tartaglia said. “My local Publix pharmacist recommended the Pharmacy Technician continuing education course at KSU.” It turns out Tartaglia’s pharmacist is friends with Tim Sanders, one of the Pharmacy Technician certificate program’s instructors. Based on her previous experience in various volunteer roles in the medical industry, Tartaglia felt it would be a natural fit. The course is typically three months long, but to her delight, a separate, accelerated option was available that could be completed in just six weeks. “I was nervous going back to school and wondered how I was going to learn all the information in such a short period of time. Tim [Sanders] put us completely at ease from the beginning. He offered encouragement and hope, along with real-life experiences, to help us understand what life as a technician would be like in the real world.”
My boss was impressed by what I learned in this class. Wendy Tartaglia, Pharmacy Technician Graduate

Tartaglia cited several impactful aspects that she gained from the program with the most important being the discovery of what life is like in a pharmacy. The course also covers the necessary math skills required in the field, the different classifications of drugs and their uses, how to properly mix medications (known as compounding), and the codes used in the industry (known as sig codes). “Knowing that it was going to take a concerted amount of effort to accomplish this task in such a short period of time, I threw myself into the work,” she said. “I was determined to work hard and succeed.” “Wendy was a successful student because she wanted to succeed,” Sanders said. “The pace was fast and, if you fell behind, it would have been easy to give up. But she excelled.” Two weeks after completing the class, Sanders alerted Tartaglia of a job lead. As a result, she is now happily employed as a pharmacy technician with the Publix at Sandy Plains Exchange in Marietta. The referral, coupled with her class experience, was the difference maker. “You are more hirable by taking this class and having more knowledge of the industry under your belt,” Tartaglia said. “My boss was impressed by what I learned in the course.” The same week she was hired at Publix, Tartaglia took the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam and passed. She has since added the letters CPhT next to her name and received a new job title of certified pharmacy technician. The national certification will allow her to work at any pharmacy across the country. “There’s a lot of opportunities in this field,” Tartaglia said. “I’m just getting my feet wet, getting good experience and looking forward to what’s next.”

The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point, and then back out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path
shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Trained and Certified Labyrinth Facilitator. Extended labyrinth walk, meditation and journal writing time from 3-4 p.m.
