the seat of your pants? As much as I like things to work out exactly how I’ve played them out in my mind, experience has taught me better. There is a saying that goes something like this: “It’s not a matter of what happens to you. It’s how you react to it.” Poet Carl Sandburg articulates this further: “Nearly all the best things that came to me in life have been unexpected, unplanned by me.” Nursing school was on the horizon for Melissa Amavisca, as it is her goal to be a traveling nurse. However, her Plan B has successfully charted her career in the healthcare field. Her end goal is still the same, but Melissa is thriving – and saving lives in the ER – along the way. She might look familiar to you as she has been featured in various CCPE commercials and videos as well as returned to our classrooms to connect with other healthcare students. Melissa is truly an inspiration. Learn more about this incredible woman on page 10. What’s meant for you might not always be so obvious. I am a proponent of education and lifelong learning. Knowledge is a long-term gift, whether it’s a 2-year degree, a bachelor’s degree, MBA, Ph.D, a professional certificate from continuing education – or a combination of them all! Weigh your options and forge your path. If it doesn’t work out the way you intended, that’s OK – keep going. That’s why so many options for education and career advancement exist. There are no limits on how successful you can truly be.

THE REAL

WORLD

BUSINESSES EMPOWER STUDENTS WITH REAL-WORLD TRAINING

W

When we tout hands-on training

from industry professionals, we truly mean it. From caramelization to CPR, continuing education students learn a variety of skills in the classrooms and apply them at apprenticeships, clinicals and externships. The benefits are reciprocal as both student and businesses receive a valuable educational benefit. Our Culinary Apprenticeship students have the distinct pleasure to learn from Chef Robert Gerstenecker (pictured on page 5) as part of their months-long training in our program. With Park 75 Restaurant at the Four Seasons Atlanta as one of their many classrooms, these future chefs get to take part in an amazing culinary experience. Chef Gerstenecker brings a wealth of knowledge to these future food professionals. He has been a part of the Four Seasons team for 26 years; 11 with the Atlanta location. “We were one of the first to partner with KSU’s [Culinary] apprenticeship program when there were only a handful of students,” he said. “I really found the idea of hands-on work to be so very important for the students today and wanted to support any way we could.” The growth of the students is a rewarding experience for Chef Gerstenecker. From proper knife skills to food prep to service – he describes it as a “complete experience” for them. His kitchen team is also involved in the educational factor: “It gives our full-time employees satisfaction of being able to share their passion with others and makes them feel valued as a teacher/mentor to the students.” The chef highlighted the ability to support the local community, provide future cooks with insight into the field, and a chance to connect with potential employees as additional value of serving as an apprenticeship site for the Culinary program. “We recently hired one of the students,” Chef Gerstenecker said. “It was very much based on performance and the student’s positive attitude.” Overall, this chef understands the value of apprenticeship-based learning. He said, “I think this type of education brings in people that a company would otherwise not be exposed to. It adds a fresh and exciting atmosphere to have students participate and bring in their curiosity and energy.”

Since 2005, our Certified Nursing Assistant students have been able to gain valuable experience at A.G. Rhodes Health & Rehab nursing home. This facility serves as a clinical site where CNA students are able to implement the skills they’ve learned in the classroom. Mary Helton, A.G. Rhodes HR Director, has hired numerous KSU CNA students because they met or exceeded expectations. She is also assured about their skills due to the caliber of the instructors in the CNA program. As students progress through the clinicals, Helton said the growth is apparent, considering how Mary Helton many have little to no experience in nursing homes. She added, “There are also a lot of negative misconceptions about nursing homes, and it is nice to see students broaden their perspectives and show a greater appreciation and understanding. Our residents also enjoy and benefit from the engagement and the additional care that the students provide when they are here.” This longtime partnership at A.G. Rhodes also allows experienced CNAs an opportunity to enhance their training and instruction skills when they work with the KSU students. Helton said, “When we open up our facility to students, we grow along with the students and find their feedback invaluable. We are always looking for ways to improve and do things more efficiently, and this relationship helps to foster that goal.” Additional benefits of this collaboration include giving back to the community, developing valuable relationships, and promoting growth and learning. “In today’s market with all of the employee challenges that companies face, these partnerships prove to be a vital tool for recruitment and retention,” Helton said. “We have opened our doors and partnered with a variety of programs, and overall it has been such a great experience.”

PRACTICAL PROGRAMS. RELEVANT INDUSTRIES. Prepare for Success with Office Professional Courses

I

In today’s competitive job

market, it’s imperative to invest in yourself in order to gain the skills that will separate you from the field. Several industries are experiencing growth and seeking prospective candidates proficient with office professional skills. Two professional certificate programs that will best prepare you to be a successful office professional are Administrative Professional (page 6) and Basic Office Technology (page 48). “These courses represent the core fundamentals required for most office positions,” said Pam Moss, program manager. “The importance of these skills is not overlooked by employers.” Our Administrative Professional course will help you develop the knowledge and skills necessary for workplace success in tasks such as telephone, records management, mail, financial records and presentations. You will also learn basic procedures for managing office tasks by studying time management techniques and completing applications in an office simulation format. In our Basic Office Technology class, you will experience real-world training of multiple devices such as apps, computers, smartphones and digital cameras. Additionally, you will become savvy with Microsoft Office 2013 products, security safety, ethics and privacy.

Kenneth Ellis, graduate

“This is a hardware and software class designed to get individuals returning to the workplace up to speed on office technology,” Doug Vanderbilt, class instructor, said. “It’s not a technology class – we’re not taking computers apart – but students will become comfortable with using technology in the workplace.” Investing in yourself is a concept Kenneth Ellis has modeled repeatedly. The aspiring author first completed our Administrative Professional program before he progressed to our Basic Office Technology course. As a result, he’s attended two graduation ceremonies to celebrate his success. Kenneth embodies the “I Did It” slogan adopted by many of our students as he is constantly striving for selfimprovement. Ellis says continuing his education is important to him because it puts him in a better position to command more compensation. “These KSU programs are 110%, 5-out-of-5 stars, and 20-out-of-10 points in building you up educationally,” he said. His work in our Administrative Professional program allowed him to establish a portfolio of office tasks to present to potential employers. “It has completely made all the difference with employers taking me seriously concerning clerical work (office placement),” Ellis said. Sometimes, “Plan B” ends up

being the best option. For Melissa Amavisca, her contingency plan put her on an alternate path to the same destination. The Harrison High School graduate knew from an early age she wanted to enter the healthcare field. “I’ve always had a passion for people and helping others,” Amavisca said. “I always wanted to become a nurse.” After graduating high school, she took the conventional route and enrolled at KSU and began working on her undergraduate core studies. The original plan was to enter KSU’s renowned WellStar School of Nursing. However, after several years of applying to no avail, Amavisca began to explore other options. Upon receiving our Course Catalog magazine, she attended one of our Open House events to learn more about the continuing education route. “I was interested in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program at first because I wanted to work in a nursing home to gain some experience,” she said. “I took the CNA program with no intent of taking anything else.” What happened next was not part of Amavisca’s plan. “I fell in love with KSU’s College of

Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) and the staff here,” she said. “I came back and took Phlebotomy Technician and EKG Technician.” Her drive and determination didn’t stop there. After completing each certificate training course, Amavisca successfully passed the state and national exams for each program. Additionally, she acquired a CPCT (Certified Patient Care Technician) certification to boost her résumé. As a result of the skills and knowledge she learned through her coursework, Amavisca landed a job as a phlebotomist at a local blood lab after a classmate alerted her of it. She later was promoted to office manager before the lab shut down. A few days after losing her job, Amavisca received a phone call from WellStar Paulding Hospital in Hiram and was hired as an emergency department technician. She says she can do everything a nurse can except medicate patients. “[Working in the emergency room], we touch patients more than anybody,” she said. “We are the eyes and ears of the floor.” Amavisca said working in the ER has been an eye-opening experience in that you realize how many sick people are in need of care. She lists her favorite parts of the job as getting to see people get better. Amavisca also appreciates the camaraderie of the close, family-oriented staff and she thrives in the chaos and unpredictability of the ER environment. Amavisca is planning to go back to school to receive an associate’s degree in nursing or surgical technology. She said, “I eventually want to be a traveling nurse.” Forever grateful of her CCPE education, Amavisca said the real-world, hands-on training was the most valuable aspect of the programs. “These classes are a stepping stone to entering the healthcare field,” she said.” I’ve discovered that companies really appreciate the KSU logo on your certificate.”

Theory and actual practice of orthotics, therapeutic shoes, modifications and custom design are included as well as CAD/CAM technology. Students perfect their skills in practice labs within a working state of the art orthotics laboratory. A successful Pedorthist specializes in comprehensive patient foot care using therapeutic footwear and supportive orthotic devices (arch supports) and designs and creates therapeutic shoes, foot orthoses, custom shoes, ankle-foot orthotics, and fillers for partial foot amputations. “The program was very beneficial in providing the classroom knowledge necessary for the Pedorthic practice,” said Terry Reed, 2014 graduate. “No stone was left unturned from anatomy, to orthotics, to Medicare guidelines, and everything in between. The lab time was very informative, giving hands-on exposure to a wide variety of equipment and various methodologies for working with peoples’ feet.” $3,200, 140 Hrs, 14 CEUs 2/6/17 - 2/25/17 18 Sessions M-Sa, 8AM - 5PM Course# 173PHLC5850A

A desire to help others in need

is what Rocio Colon and Mary Groover have in common. Both women, desiring a career in healthcare, were excited to learn about the CNA program in our catalog, “The Course.” After reading the description, they both knew it was the right fit for them. The program aligned with Rocio’s personal schedule and she knew the reputation of KSU as an institution of excellence in education. “I have always wanted to study nursing and now that I had the opportunity to do it. I registered and completed the course. It was my dream vocation since I like to help and take care of people,” Rocio said. “From the first day, I was very pleased and impressed with the knowledge and professionalism that each teacher had and with the enthusiasm and dedication that they taught every subject and skill with.” The combination of experienced instructors and being taught in a classroom with all the equipment needed to practice every skill was helpful. “The teachers also were very patient while explaining the concepts and skills and took extra time to explain details that were not too clear to me, due to many new concepts that I have not normally used or were aware of,” Rocio said. She also found the videos played during class were helpful in visualizing the skills they were reading about. For both, the hands-on experience added a lot to the program. The clinical training was Rocio’s favorite part while Mary liked the CPR/First Aid Training. Rocio said, “It allowed me to perform the skills I learned with people that had real needs and the personal touch was incredible.” Mary enjoyed meeting the variety of people in her class and was able to learn more about taking care of others, especially the elderly. This hit home

16 JANUARY - MARCH 2017 // 470-578-6765 // ccpe.kennesaw.edu

for her, knowing that one day her parents may need that assistance. “It feels rewarding to help others without them needing to leave the comfort of their homes,” she said. Mary is working as a CNA for Faith Medical Services based out of College Park but works with clients on the north side of Atlanta. She helps with the activities of daily living such as housekeeping, bill paying, doctor appointments, general activities and cooking meals. She is also a companion to people whose families can’t afford to miss work to take care or spend time with their loved ones. “The CNA program has made me even more compassionate towards the mentally challenged and the elderly,” she said. “I feel like I have a more purposeful job now.” After taking this course to reassure her interest, Mary is planning on applying to Clayton State in January to further her career in nursing. Rocio was able to reflect on her motivations for enrolling: “While taking this course I realized that my personal reason for taking care of others is bigger than what I thought. It gives me great happiness to be able to give relief to those in real need, bring compassion and see their faces of compliance and to know that their needs have been taken care of.” She wants to use the knowledge and skills the course taught her to start taking care of those less fortunate and in need of care. Both graduates advise students to take the course to help direct them in the healthcare profession. Rocio specifically suggests going to our Open House and gathering as much information as possible. Mary adds, “Even if you don’t see yourself as a long-term CNA, the knowledge from the coursework and clinical will help you achieve your goals.”

SAYONARA TESOL GRADUATE PREPARES FOR NEXT CHAPTER

Morgan Attaway, TESOL graduate, spent two years teaching in Japan. She returned to the U.S. to obtain her master’s degree in TESOL and spent some time reflecting on her experience.

My return to the U.S. will

mark two years of living, teaching, and growing in the “Land of the Rising Sun.” Looking back, I can barely recognize the person I was when I first arrived. I must admit that when I first found out that I had been accepted to the Japanese Exchange and Teaching program, I was terrified that I was making a huge mistake and getting in over my head. Little did I know at the time that it would become one of the best decisions I have ever made. The changes I have undergone and confidence I have gained are only the tip of a vast iceberg of experiences that sum up my life here. By working abroad, I have gained a level of confidence in myself and my abilities that I never achieved before. I learned how to adapt to a new culture, a new education system, and a new life. For me, this encompassed everything from learning Japanese, to having my first surgery, to losing loved ones back home, to keeping warm in freezing temperatures when there is no insulation in the buildings and no central heating (which is a lot harder than it sounds when you’re a Georgia girl like me). However cliché it may sound, I know now that no matter what ups and downs may come my way, I am able to handle them all. On the other side of that coin, however, are all the wonderful experiences that change your life forever. Japan is a delightful blend of old and new, filled to the brim with cherry blossoms, anime, temples, robots and sushi. While the virtues of Japan seem endless, I must say that I will miss the people here the most. By living in a small coastal town, I have had the chance to

become a part of a community where there are no strangers. I have met people with a vast array of backgrounds and worldviews and learned so much more about the world around me. While these past two years have been amazing, it is time to move on to the next adventure. For me, that next step is graduate school to obtain my Master’s degree in TESOL. Ultimately, I hope to manage and facilitate ESL programs at the university level and work as an English Language Fellow or Specialist for the U.S. State Department. For those considering the idea of teaching TESOL, or are already ESL educators and are contemplating a move overseas, get ready for a path unlike any other. Students are diverse and will come to your classroom with a story of their own. You will come home from work with stories and points of view that most people will never encounter in their lifetime let alone on a daily basis. Personally, I can’t envision myself doing anything else. Whatever may come, I can never express how thankful I am for having had the opportunity to live and teach abroad and to grow as an educator and as a person. Working as a TESOL instructor has allowed me to meet people, visit places, and experience moments that I never would have otherwise.

SUCCESS

ON THE BOOKS GRADUATE’S DRIVE LEADS TO REWARDING CAREER

A

Audrey Barfield graduated

from our Paralegal Certificate program in August of 2015. She works for Croy Engineering as a paralegal for the 2016 SPLOST Program, Right-ofWay Department. Our Paralegal Certificate is our longestrunning certificate program, with 31 years. The University Professional & Continuing Education Association named the Paralegal Certificate a Program of Excellence at its fall 2014 UPCEA South awards conference. In 2014, we unveiled the Joe R. Edwards Law Library which features more than 3,000 donated law books. During her time at CCPE, Barfield took as many classes at a time to be able to graduate sooner. The program consists of 13 courses. Each course meets for three hours one night per week for six weeks. Students can arrange their own schedule; they can take one to four courses per six-week session. Additionally, students receive hands-on experience in our on-site law library, a tour at the Cobb County Court House and conduct a title search in Cobb County. Barfield was able to take Jeff Gaba’s Real Estate Law class, and it was after this class that

30 JANUARY - MARCH 2017 // 470-578-6765 // ccpe.kennesaw.edu

an opportunity arose to work with one of Gaba’s partners. Barfield secured the job and now works with Gaba and his team as well as with other attorneys in Marietta. “This certificate has allowed me to obtain a career I never thought was possible,” Barfield said. “I absolutely love my job and what I do.” Our program intrigued Barfield due to her love of the law and every aspect of it. During the program, she gained new skills such as becoming more detail oriented and improving her organizational skills. “The research that I did alongside my attorney was extremely educational. He mentored me in a way and set me on my path to where I am today. I’m very thankful,” Barfield said. She encourages those coming into the program to join Cobb County Legal Professional Association before they graduate. “It is a fantastic group of people and they can also help you in your search for employment,” said Barfield. “My advice would be to not give up. This program will provide insight and knowledge for you to take to any job that is offered to you. Good luck!”

Web Design & Development Certificate

Unleash your creativity and gain invaluable career training in the high-demand field of web design. With projections of a 22% job increase through 2020, along with potential six-figure salaries (Bureau of Labor Statistics), this intensive nine-month course will instill you with the integral design principles and industry tools to put you at the forefront of technology. This is achieved by mastering and executing the four modules.

Module 1 Discovery

The foundational module exposes students to design principles, usability, the Web development process and file basics. You will learn how to scope a project, design applying usability-based ideas and create assets for your sites, including logos and other content. Additionally, an introduction to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator will provide the essential knowledge that students will need to begin to produce website designs.

Module 2 Design

You will begin implementing the design principles learned in Module 1 to Web page layout. Multiple design ideas and complete website designs will be accomplished through the practices that we have learned. Designing for multiple screens and further design theory will be discussed concerning how we produce elements as designers specifically for the web. We will continue to improve our design skills, generate working design comps through group and individual projects, and introduce Dreamweaver into our workflow.

Module 3 Development

Though HTML and CSS provide the foundation for much of the Web, modern websites interactively engage visitors. In this module, you will use JavaScript to pro-

vide such interactivity. You will learn vanilla JavaScript and use libraries like JQuery and MooTools. You will also learn to use PHP to build additional functionality into your websites.

Module 4 Deployment

Design can capture a visitor’s attention, but successful Web designers must also be adept with industry tools and practices such as search engine optimization (SEO) and Web analytics to drive traffic to their sites. Students will learn CMS basics, how to use version control for their code and gain confidence in committing changes to public repositories. Textbooks are required at the first class meeting and are available at the KSU Center bookstore. A BlueHost account will be required for the second half of class. Internet access is also required.

The Labyrinth A Walking Meditation

The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point and then back out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Trained and Certified Labyrinth Facilitator. Extended labyrinth walk, meditation and journal writing time from 3-5PM. $49, 3 Hrs Instructor(s): Chris Beam 02/08/17 1 Session(s) Wed 1PM - 4PM Course# 173SHRC1202A
