The College of Continuing & Professional Education is accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and is accredited to issue the IACET CEU.

Here at CCPE, I like to think

of us as a “jobs creation engine.” We have nearly 40 professional certificate programs designed for industries such as healthcare, technology and management, which you can explore in this catalog. Our team is constantly reviewing ways to evolve our current certificate courses to keep them relevant – thus giving you a competitive advantage for your professional goals. But what’s next? How are job industries changing the requirements of their employees? What new career fields are emerging? Also, what skill sets are in demand and how do we supply the educational tools to help you succeed? Our program development team will answer these questions in the form of new certificate offerings. On the table: CompTIA, Health IT, and Agile. We look forward to seeing you in our classes, crossing the stage at graduation, and telling us about your new position! Chelsea Cowan definitely understands the value of professional education for career enhancement. She graduated from the Construction Project Management certificate program and uses her skills for the Georgia Department of Defense. Although she had on-thejob experience, Cowan desired a focused educational approach to her career. She said our certificate program provided her more of a comprehensive knowledge of the construction industry. Learn more about her on Page 34. We want to help you reach your full potential – it is our main purpose. You are encouraged to contact us at ccpe@kennesaw.edu to share your career accomplishments as well as ideas for new programs. You matter to us, and we are looking forward to your feedback.

HUMAN RESOURCE CERTIFICATE

Graduates Share Their Stories Employers count on Human Resource professionals to adapt to changes in business. The HR profession operates at the core of this global economy, ensuring the alignment of organizational strategy with a high-performing workforce.

Companies have no greater asset than their people, and the management of functions related to human resources is absolutely critical in today’s business success. Recent graduates shared their incredible insight into our Human Resource Management course.

Chynita Hopps learned about the HR classes from the SHRM website. She chose to register for this course because it worked best for her schedule and was the only class available on Saturday in the testing window that she needed. Before taking this course, Hopps received an MBA and Master’s degree in Human Resources Management. She has previously worked as an HR representative, senior representative, HR consultant, HR team lead, HR generalist, and has eight years of experience in the field. Hopps passed the HR certification test one month after completing the CCPE course. She said, “I felt accomplished!” Gisela Garcia-Soto searched and found that KSU’s instructors had a good reputation when it came to teaching the Human Resources course. Fellow colleagues of hers, who had successfully passed the exam, also recommended the course. She took the 13-week class at the Alpharetta location. Garcia-Soto felt her instructor, Xavier Cugnon, made the class interesting and enjoyable. “He engaged with us and that helped tremendously,” she said. Garcia-Soto was nervous when she sat down to take the SHRM certification test. However, she said, “Once the proctor signed and placed [my] seal on the sheet, I was so relieved and thankful.” Malcolm Smith, Human Resources director, said, “The class was terrific. It was a really great experience.” Smith’s instructor was a VP of

HR in the metro Atlanta area. He had a lot of great stories to tell from his own career and his own life in HR that everyone was able to relate to and relate the material back to the course. Smith was also able to bond with his peers in the class and is still in contact with several of them today. “I felt like getting the certification was something that would help me demonstrate my skills and knowledge,” he said. “As I continued through my job search, I think that having this certification helped me distinguish myself as a qualified candidate for this kind of job.” When Carla Newkirk was researching where to get her certification, she found helpful information on the SHRM website which led her to CCPE. “After actually going through and speaking with different people, this was the actual best course to take as far as the rate of success for the certification goes,” she said. Newkirk said the atmosphere of the class was great and there was a lot of interaction between her, her peers, and her instructor. “The professor, had a great attitude and a great atmosphere, so that just made it even better to come to each and every time,” she said. She also felt that being in a classroom setting helped her to stay motivated. “This opportunity has been really great for me. I’m actually getting [these] credentials,” Newkirk said. “SHRM was one of the best things that I’ve accomplished this year.”

AMBITION

AMPLIFIED

Construction Project Management Graduate Cements Her Success With Professional Education

Hard hats, bulldozers, and blueprints are nothing new

to Chelsea Cowan, deputy director of contracting for the Georgia Department of Defense. Although she had plenty of in-the-field training in her career, Cowan also desired professional education to continue advancing in the industry. The Construction Project Management certificate was her solution.

34

OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2018 // 470-578-6765 // ccpe.kennesaw.edu

Cowan’s original career path was Hospitality Administration/Management in which she earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of West Florida. She said, “[It] was a brand-new program when I declared my major. The Gulf Coast is booming with tourism, so I thought I would be able to excel in that field.” However, Cowan found herself wanting a change of pace after graduation. She moved to Texas and worked as an administrative assistant for the City of Austin at Austin Energy. “After I had been there a little while, I was moved to a few different departments that needed extra help until I landed in contracting. I loved it and became a full-time contract compliance associate,” she said. Her success in this role was her inspiration to pursue a master’s degree in Public Administration at her alma mater. Her next move was to Georgia – the Clay National Guard Center for the Department of Defense in Smyrna hired her. Cowan said, “I started as a contract

compliance specialist where I managed and negotiated construction contracts for the National Guard. Within four years, I was promoted to Deputy Director of Contracting.” After being on the job for a few years, Cowan began researching area schools. She wanted a program that would help further her career while also working full time. She said, “KSU provided exactly what I needed. It was the perfect choice.” Hand-on projects, engaging class sessions, and instructors with longtime professional experience are a few of Cowan’s many highlights of this course. She describes the certificate program as informative – not overwhelming. “The course taught me a lot about software programs, how to read drawings/specs, and estimating. The in-class conversations were extremely helpful because my classmates and I were able to use real-life experiences to compare and discuss solutions,” Cowan said. “It was nice to have different experience levels guiding us, and everyone in

the class had different backgrounds in the field,” she continues. “Most of the classwork was interactive, and I worked with my other classmates on assignments and programs such as Bluebeam and AutoCAD.” This focused educational approach to her career field has provided a comprehensive knowledge of construction and boosted Cowan’s confidence in making decisions on the job. “I am able to understand the ‘how’ and ‘why’ when discussing projects with my contractors,” she said. “Being able to understand the complete construction process, start to finish, allows me to be successful in contractual construction choices and negotiations.” Cowan plans to continue building upon her success by earning her Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification. She said, “I think it is important to be constantly learning and growing as an employee and to keep up with current software and trends.”

OLLI TRAVEL

TRAVEL IS GOOD FOR US ALL! Unforgettable small-group travel experiences are waiting with the OLLI travel group. Travel is one of those things that naturally gives rise to questions and concerns. For those interested, we have answered the most frequently asked questions. What is the OLLI Travel Group? A newly formed group of individuals who have come together to plan trips for OLLI students and others that are 50 and older. The majority of these students are looking for others to travel with and seeking to find a group that is interested in taking short day trips together as well as domestic and international travel. Will this be an educational travel opportunity? All of the trips will focus on cultural, historical and scenic locations. When it is possible, a course may be offered prior to the trip where individuals, who choose to, may learn about the area, culture, language and sights. What if I am traveling alone? Most of our travel group is planning to travel alone. Through this OLLI group, you will meet others to share accommodations. It is typically more affordable and it is always more fun. Do I have to be over 50 years of age? OLLI is designed for individuals that are 50 years and older. The planned travel will be designed for individuals of this age.
