The power of education is tremendous.

If you are reading this Course Catalog, I want to congratulate you on taking the first step toward an incredible future. Just like you, I am embarking on a new journey as interim dean of KSU’s College of Continuing and Professional Education. I’ve been an Owl since 2006, serving in the Coles College of Business, Distance Learning, and President’s Emerging Global Scholars program. As I continue to learn about professional education and all of the opportunities it provides, it is important to highlight how one person revolutionized programs for adult learners in Georgia. Barbara Calhoun’s contributions to professional education – not only at KSU but worldwide – is unmatched. For more than two decades, Barbara’s leadership propelled our programs to be recognized by state, national and international organizations. Thousands of students across the state came to CCPE for empowerment, reinvention and success. Barbara’s influence also spans to China, Korea and Poland. She has connected with educators in all three countries about lifelong learning and certificate programs. You can learn more about Dean Calhoun on Page 4. Kenneth Danter is another person who is focused on making a major impact. He chose two of our classes – Cisco and Ethical Hacker – to complement his aviation electronics experience in the Navy. After completing our courses, Kenneth passed industry-level certification exams and secured a new job. And he’s set his eyes on another goal – learn more on Page 38. How will you leave your mark? More importantly – how can education be the catalyst? Save the date: August 2 is our Open House. Take this very important step toward what could be a limitless path of achievement and excellence. See you soon.

Knowing the traditional four-year degree was not something he wanted to pursue, Danter found the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) credential was a perfect fit. The certification seamlessly merged his experience in the military with a successful career in computer networking. “I am used to getting certificates in the Navy,” Danter said. “I came across CCPE and realized that the college offered VA benefits for industryrecognized certifications. I took that [opportunity].” The course helped to broaden his skill set, gain the ability to manage and optimize network systems, and pass the CCNA certification exam. Shortly after, Danter accepted a position as a network engineer. “I had zero experience in networking,” he said. “The only experience I had was classroom time, lab time and my certificate. As soon as you get that certificate, doors just open for you.” Danter’s progression in the technology sector continued to evolve as he pursued the CCNA Cyber Ops certification through the Cisco Networking Academy. Hacker [certificate].” He enrolled the next day and was able to mark his next career milestone when he earned the Certified Ethical Hacker designation. “The test was certainly not easy, but the class prepares you for it pretty well,” Danter said. “This course teaches proficiency, practical use and safety.” He said that 2-week bootcamps don’t provide a comprehensive overview of assessing ethical and legal requirements of security assessment, analyzing different phases of hacking, recommending strategies for evaluating the security of various systems, and implementing the appropriate level of security controls like our course does. As a security operations analyst at SecureWorks – a subsidiary of Dell Technologies – Danter now works alongside a team of professionals who provide information security services. He said the team is the “frontline for many companies around the world.” “It is all about protecting people,” he continued. “It is unfortunate when you hear stories of people getting hacked, losing money, sensitive data and becoming victims. The hacker only has to be right one time, and the defense has to be right all the time.” Since starting his new role, Danter found there is a lack of awareness among the public about Certified Ethical Hackers. As a security professional, he is now advocating for the field. “People are afraid of what they don’t understand,” Danter said. “Unethical hacking will happen without you knowing. [Ethical Hackers] cannot do anything without written permission. [The CEH] is an industry standard for a reason.” Danter’s long-term vision for the future is to start his own security consulting company. In the meantime, he continues to seek opportunities for growth and development – including pursuing another certification. “Technology moves fast and often,” Danter said. “It’s about gaining knowledge and staying ahead of the curve.”

Portrait Drawing and Painting - Beginning Professional artist and instructor Ernest Varner says, “If you can sign your name and I can read it, you can learn to draw and paint portraits and figures. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s have some fun!” Mr. Varner has studied with many of today’s portrait masters and uses his experience to enhance each student’s quest for personal expression. For beginning through intermediate skill levels, this class is designed to take the mystery out of painting portraits and figures. Whether you prefer classical realism or impressionism, you will concentrate on capturing a likeness in fresh vibrant flesh tones in oils or pastels while working from photos or live subjects. Particular attention will be given to understanding light and shadow, and how to model light and shadow using expressive drawing, value, color, edges, and brushwork techniques to create the illusion of form. Instructor demonstration and presentations, lectures, and critiques are intended to enhance self-expression so you can take your skills to the next level.
