STORIES
It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives – choice, not chance, determines your destiny.” ~ Aristotle We make choices every day of varying degrees of importance. Some of these are in our control: Getting up or pressing the snooze button? Slowing down at a yellow light or speeding up? Choosing a salad over French fries? However, some things are out of our control, and one moment can change everything. Just ask Jermile Richards, whose life changed in an instant. What started as a regular day turned into a life-or-death situation in a matter of seconds. Although he could not control his circumstance, Jermile made the decision to not let a traumatic experience overwhelm his personal goals. He chose our Health Coach certificate program because he was motivated to improve his personal health. Today, he’s paying it forward through proactive health education for children. Read more about his incredible story on page 16. Where do you see yourself in the next hour, day and year – and how will you get there? More importantly, what motivates you? Some people set goals, and others achieve them. Just ask Jermile and many of our other graduates who can proudly say, “I Did It!” When it comes to your future, what types of decisions are you ready to make for your own personal achievement? If you desire to increase your knowledge and advance your career, what actions are you taking to make it happen? Say yes to your success! The choice is yours.

Occupational Trends
Services for the Elderly and Disabled is the third-fastest growing job industry in Georgia with a growth of 56% since 2008 (AJC).
Industry Trends
• There are only 127 certified geriatricians in Georgia, against a need for 442 based on the elderly population. • Georgia is projected to have 1.9 million residents over 65 by 2030, up from 1 million in 2014. • The problem is nationwide. It’s estimated that 30,000 geriatricians will be needed by 2030 to care for 21 million elderly. There were just over 7,000 in 2014. • Older adults account for one-quarter of all doctor’s office visits, one-third of all hospital stays, and more than one-third of emergency medical responses. Four in five need care for chronic conditions like heart disease, hypertension and arthritis. Source: AJC
Currently, 1 in 8 individuals in the U.S. is over age 65. The elderly population will more than double between 2000 and 2030. By 2030, 1 in every 4 individuals will be over age 65. SSSF (Steuben Senior Services Fund, Inc.)
Between 2010 and 2050, the United States is projected to experience rapid growth in its older population. In 2050, the number of Americans aged 65 and older is projected to be 88.5 million, more than double its reported population of 40.2 million in 2010. U.S. Census Bureau
GERONTOLOGISTS IN DIRE NEED PROGRAM PROVIDES ANSWER TO AGING POPULATION

Did you know in 1916 the
average life expectancy in America was 49.6 years for males and 54.3 years for females? Today, just 100 years later, those numbers have greatly increased to 76.4 and 81.2, respectively (CDC). As a result, by 2030, roughly 31 million Americans will be older than 75, the largest such population in American history (U.S. Census Bureau projections). As quoted in the recent New York Times feature titled “As Population Ages, Where Are the Geriatricians?” (bit.ly/NYTgerontology), Terry Fulmer, president of the John A. Hartford Foundation, which funds programs to improve the care of older adults, said, “One of the greatest stories of the 20th century was that we doubled the life expectancy of adults. Now we need to make sure we have all the supports in place to assure not just a long life but a high quality of that long life.” By 2050, its projected there will be 88.5 million Americans aged 65 and older – more than double that of 2010 (U.S. Census Bureau). The booming elderly population has led to several career opportunities. According to the AJC, services for the elderly and disabled is Georgia’s 3rd-fastest growing job industry with a growth of 56% since 2008. Our Professional Development in Gerontology certificate program is a direct response to these trends and needs. The course examines the revolution occurring in the U.S. and the world as the average age continues to rise. Students in the Gerontology program will gain increased knowledge, skills and confidence in the aging field, become prepared for emerging roles and new challenges in the aging arena, meet leaders and other professionals in the field and increase their organization’s level of professionalism. “I wanted to be more educated about the aging process and be able to give back to the community,” said Zola Thurmond, program graduate. “The program was extraordinary. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. It

changed my life because I know about the process of aging, what to expect, and how to help others.” The nine-month class runs from Sept. through May. One, full-day class (9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) meets on the second Tuesday of each month, providing flexibility for working individuals to attend. Dr. Lois Ricci enters her sixth year of instructing the course. She has worked in the field of aging for more than 35 years in both the hospital and academic settings as a geriatric nurse practitioner/educator and consultant. “Dr. Ricci is a true gem,” said Chris Foster, program graduate. “Her vast experience and resources in gerontology were conveyed in a very practical and easy to understand manner.” The class is comprised of interdisciplinary teaching, supportive learning and exposure to leaders in aging applicable to the students’ workplace. It draws from a diverse group of students including those that are dentists, doctors, lawyers, paralegals, nursing students, caregivers and career changers. Registration costs $699 with full and partial scholarship opportunities available. Since its 2007 inception, the program has graduated more than 200 students. Of those, 134 students have been awarded scholarships totaling $73,225 allowing them to take part in the class. “This course helped me to take care of my parents,” said Fran Crute, program graduate. “Both of them have dementia, diabetes, and high blood pressure. I really learned a lot and am thankful for this class.” Is gerontology for you? There are many reasons why our students register for this program. Perhaps you work in the healthcare industry and want to relate better to the older generation. Or, maybe you want to learn successful techniques to properly care for your parents or grandparents. No matter what your situation is, we’d like to invite you to find out more at our upcoming Open House on July 28. The next class is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 13. Jermile Richards,
Health Coach graduate
J
Jermile Richards had his future
mapped out. Then life happened. At six-foot-three, 320 pounds, he played football in high school, junior college and with a semi-professional league. Once his playing days were over, he returned home to Cartersville to begin coaching at the middle-school level. It was during this time that Richards’ life would drastically change. The then-25-year-old Richards was preparing for work and began feeling dizzy. Alone at the time, Richards was on the phone with his mother when he fainted. She called 9-1-1. “My mom beat the paramedics to my house,” Richards recalled. “If I hadn’t been on the phone with her, it could’ve been a lot worse.” Richards was life-flighted to Emory Hospital and admitted to ICU in a comatose state. He suffered a hemorrhagic stroke due to bleeding into the brain from abnormal brain vessels. Doctors alerted his family to say their goodbyes and prepare for his funeral. Amazingly, after three weeks, Richards emerged from his coma. “I am a miracle,” he said. “I got a second chance.” Upon completing a series of tests, Richards was diagnosed with Moyamoya disease – a rare, progressive cerebrovascular disorder caused by blocked arteries at the base of the brain. Doctors immediately ordered two surgeries to restore blood flow to Richards’ brain by opening narrowed blood vessels and bypassing blocked arteries. With two long visible scar lines running vertical on each side of his head, Richards explained they had to reroute his main arteries from behind his eyes sockets to allow better blood flow. The long road back to recovery continued with a six-month rehabilitation stint at Atlanta’s renowned Shepherd Center. There, Richards was tasked with re-learning how to walk, talk, eat and run. His experience sparked a life-changing discovery of a new passion – health and fitness. “I saw the changes in other people’s lives, and I wanted to be a part of it,” Richards said. He proudly shares the day he resumed a normal life. “July 7, 2010. I’ll never forget that day,” he said.
16 JULY - SEPTEMBER 2016 // 470-578-6765 // ccpe.kennesaw.edu
Richards returned to work and landed a coaching position on Kennesaw Mountain High School’s football staff. However, without a bachelor’s degree, he was searching for other educational or training opportunities to pursue his new passion of health and fitness. “My wife is a KSU graduate and receives the school’s mailings,” Richards said. “She knows how much health is important to me and alerted me of the Health Coach certificate program.” The program taught Richards how to transform the way people live by expanding his expertise in exercise science, fitness and behavior modification. Additionally, he received hands-on training in implementing weight and stress management plans, incorporating physical activity to improve overall health and improving nutrition and eating habits. “This class was a great opportunity for me,” Richards said. “The program was very affordable when compared to other colleges. The time frame was great, and the instructors were very knowledgeable.” Since graduating from the program, Richards has taken charge of his own health and fitness. By adding more exercise and an improved diet, he’s seen his weight drop from 320 to 245 pounds. He now takes advantage of every opportunity to talk to people about making healthy choices. Richards especially has a heart for kids – specifically for the subject of childhood obesity. He cites the fact that more than one-third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese in the U.S. “America is one of the most obese nations due to all the food ads we see and cheap prices of fast food,” he said. “It’s food anywhere you look.” Up next for Richards is to continue his coaching at KMHS but with a newfound mission of instilling health and fitness knowledge into his players. He also plans on taking the American Council on Exercise Health Coach Certification exam to boost his credentials and create future opportunities to educate others on healthy living. Excited about his future, Richards, now 31, reflected on his past six years by saying, “I’m thankful I had that stroke because I probably wouldn’t be here today. It was definitely a wakeup call.”

program is led by two instructors with more than 50 years of experience in the field. You will master skills such as project integration, procurement, cost, communications and human resource management, among many others. This 12-week program will provide you with preparation for the PMP and CAPM exams. We caught up with Susan Williams and Jazmane Jenkins who recently passed their PMP Certification Test after finishing the Project Management program. Both ambitious to get their future careers started, they reminisced on their experience with us. They chose us for our convenience and flexibility with their busy schedules. Once finding CCPE, Jenkins didn’t look at any other programs. He found that it gave him a good base for the rest of his career and provided him with excellent real-life examples. Williams was won over by the positive impression she was given: “I was impressed with the caliber of the students and the Atlanta businesses represented.” Both added that the class size and having two professors enhanced the experience and made it an environment in which they could both thrive. At first it almost seemed impossible to Williams that they would cover all of the material in the class, but she said her instructors (Pete Schestopol and Francine Warner) were great. They helped the class

to grasp the concepts, which translated to doing well on their PMP Certification test, a comprehensive exam allowing students to further their career and excel in their future projects. Both graduates agreed that they felt very prepared for the PMP exam – like they were in the right mindset when it came to the test. Now that they are PMP Certified, these graduates realize the opportunities available to them. Williams said, “I am looking for a position in which I can use the skills I learned and take advantage of the certification.” Jenkins also wants to take advantage of all the skills he learned and apply it to his future. Although he already works in the field, he plans on slightly altering his career path to fully utilize his certification. “Passing the test gave me more opportunities in almost every industry and company. I plan on putting myself in better positions and opportunities now that I have this certification,” he said. They wanted to give advice to prospective Project Management students. With projections of a 22% job increase through 2020, along with potential six-figure salaries (Bureau of Labor Statistics), this intensive nine-month course will instill you with the integral design principles and industry tools to put you at the forefront of technology. This is achieved by mastering and executing the four modules.
Module 1 Discovery
I DID I T!
The foundational module exposes students to design principles, usability, the Web development process and file basics. You will learn how to scope a project, design applying usability-based ideas and create assets for your sites, including logos and other content. You will begin implementing the design principles learned in Module 1 to Web page layout. Multiple design ideas and complete website designs will be accom-
plished through the practices that we have learned. Designing for multiple screens and further design theory will be discussed concerning how we produce elements as designers specifically for the web. We will continue to improve our design skills, generate working design comps through group and individual projects, and introduce Dreamweaver into our workflow.
Module 3 Development Though HTML and CSS provide the foundation for much of the Web, modern websites interactively engage visitors. In this module, you will use JavaScript to provide such interactivity. You will learn vanilla JavaScript and use libraries like JQuery and MooTools. You will also learn to use PHP to build additional functionality into your websites.

ATLANTA
AN EMERGING TECH MARKET KSU/SPSU Consolidation Brings New Programs
A
Atlanta has become one of
the hottest emerging tech hubs in the U.S. The Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) stated employers posted 14.7% more openings for technology professionals in Georgia in 2014 resulting in an average daily volume of 3,430 opportunities. Additionally, the city has been named the 6th fastest growing market for tech talent – according to CBRE’s Scoring Tech Talent report. With the lowest overall cost of living and doing business, Atlanta’s tech attraction momentum is expected to continue upward. Recognizing this trend, we strive to offer relevant programs designed to provide essential training to those seeking employment in the field. One of the many benefits of the KSU/SPSU consolidation is the expansion of our technology offerings. One of our newest certificate programs – Cisco – provides a solid networking foundation and is comprised of two courses: CCENT: Introduction to Networks and Essentials of Routing & Switching and CCNA: Scaling and Connecting Networks. For individuals with little to no prior networking experience, we recommend enrolling in our online introduction and intermediate networking courses. Cisco certifications were ranked in the Top 15-Paying IT Certifications in 2014-15 (Global Knowledge) and the employment of network administrators in the computer systems design industry is projected to grow 35% through 2022 (Bureau of Labor Statistics). According to TrainACE, the average salary for individuals with a CCNA certification is $87,790. The natural progression upon completion of our Cisco program is training to become a cyber-
crime fighter in our Information Systems Security Professional certificate program. This is not a technical course by design. It is a higher level management class that brings together all the entry level programs into a holistic approach to security. Intelligence officials say cybersecurity trumps terrorism as the No. 1 threat to the U.S. This course is ideal for those who work, or aspire to work in positions such as Security Consultant, IT Director/Manager, Security Systems Engineer, Chief Information Security Officer and Network Architect. Yahoo ranked Information Security Analyst as the No. 1 career field with a bright outlook that pays more than $70K a year, while the Department of Labor states information security’s median annual salary as $88,590 with a growth rate of 37% through 2022. In addition to the two new Cisco courses, we’ve also added two AutoCAD certificate programs. AutoCAD is the most widely used computeraided design software for producing architectural, engineering and construction drawings. In AutoCAD Essentials, you will learn basic concepts which are required for any professional to produce precise and accurate drawings. As a bonus, you’ll have the opportunity to complete a hands-on project that can be used as a foundation for your professional portfolio. AutoCAD Intermediate will allow you to take your knowledge even further as you work with more advanced tools and layouts. What’s holding you back? Come see us or visit our website to discover a new world of opportunities designed to help you change careers, start a new career or advance in your current field. You can do it!
