I heard a lot of good things about the medical programs at KSU and also had some mutual friends that recently completed some courses. I started out as an undergraduate at KSU aspiring to enter the nursing program. My focus and schedule shifted and I ended up choosing the path provided by continuing education. The instructors all had different backgrounds which was great along with the real-world experience the programs provided. It gave me the experience to work in a hospital and become a nurse.

This certificate program is one of only three accredited training courses in the country currently offering the new Pedorthic curriculum. Uniquely partnered with the Foot Solutions Academy of Pedorthic Science, the class provides a review of human anatomy including muscles, nerves, bones and skin with a focus on the feet. Theory and actual practice of orthotics, therapeutic shoes, modifications and custom design are included as well as CAD/CAM technology. Students perfect their skills in practice labs within a working state of the art orthotics laboratory. A successful Pedorthist specializes in comprehensive patient foot care using therapeutic footwear and supportive orthotic devices (arch supports), and designs and creates therapeutic shoes, foot orthoses, custom shoes, ankle-foot orthotics, and fillers for partial foot amputations. “The program was very beneficial in providing the classroom knowledge necessary for the Pedorthic practice,” said Terry Reed, 2014 graduate. “No stone was left unturned from anatomy, to orthotics, to Medicare guidelines, and everything in between. The lab time was very informative, giving hands-on exposure to a wide variety of equipment and various methodologies for working with peoples’ feet.”

A lull in her professional life

was one of the best things that happened to Mattie Logan, Meeting & Event Management graduate. After completing this professional certificate program, her career has been energized – and she’s just getting started. After majoring and working in the fashion design and merchandizing industry, Logan transitioned to jewelry design followed by game entertainment for professional baseball. However, she said, “I felt like I needed a change.” She decided to pursue the Meeting & Event Management professional certificate at KSU after realizing she was often the coordinator for friend and family functions. She said, “I have always had an interest in planning. No matter what the circumstance may be, people are always planning meetings or events which gave me hope for a constantly growing industry.” Access to industry professionals was a major benefit of the certificate program. She said, “Each week the class focused on a different topic, giving you a crash course on all aspects of the planning process. One week we had the VP of Operations from one of the top catering companies in the Atlanta area speak to our class about all things food and beverage-related. We had top associates from AV and Transportation companies speak as well.”

I owe my career in planning to this program. It gives you the tools to build a career and support to help you grow and succeed. Mattie Logan

Meeting & Event Management graduate

Logan said her instructors, also industry professionals, would spend time after class to help with questions or referrals. She said, “In no other class have I felt like my personal success was the main goal from my instructors and program directors like I did in this course. I had a great experience.” Pam Moss, Meeting & Event Management program manager, said the combination of expert instruction and an interactive learning environment are what truly make students in this program successful. She said, “Our program gives our graduates a competitive advantage in the marketplace. With Atlanta’s ranking as a top city in this industry, this course will continue to develop future leaders in this career field.” After earning her certificate, Logan was hired by Incentive Solutions, Inc. She is an associate account manager for a full-service meeting and event planning company with an emphasis on incentive group travel. Germany, Costa Rica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic are some of the countries she’s traveled to for programs she’s assisted in planning and operating. Her duties include writing proposals, creating websites, developing budgets and performing site inspections – all of which she was prepared for through the KSU program. She said, “I use every aspect of the topics and focuses of the class in my daily life at (Incentive Solutions, Inc.). When booking transfers, I refer back to my days studying transportation. When I put together proposals for possible business or costings for existing clients, I use my knowledge from the course to help guide me through tasks.” Logan credits the knowledge and tools she gained in the Meeting & Event Management program for her professional achievement: “I owe my career in planning to this program. It gives you the tools to build a career and support to help you grow and succeed.”

This intensive nine-month course will teach you integral design principles and industry tools that will put you at the forefront of technology. This is achieved by mastering and executing the following four modules:

Module 1 Discovery

This foundational module will expose students to design principles, usability, the Web development process, and file basics. Additionally, an introduction to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator will provide the essential knowledge needed to begin producing website designs.

Module 2 Design

Students will also learn vanilla JavaScript and libraries like JQuery and MooTools, as well as PHP for building functionality into websites.

Module 4 Deployment

Design captures a visitor’s attention, but successful Web designers must also be adept with industry tools and practices such as search engine optimization (SEO) and Web analytics to drive traffic to their sites. The Labyrinth A Walking Meditation

The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point, and then back

out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Labyrinth Facilitator. Extended labyrinth walk, meditation and journal writing time from 3:00 – 5:00PM. $49, 2 Hours A. Some historical questions are addressed, but are left as “histories mysteries” since there are no complete explanations that resolve them. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one. Students find that Quentin, who is a recognized historian, author, and cowboy poet entertaining, informative, and enlightening. $99, 12 Hours Q. M. I would not be where I am in the legal field today without the funding I received through the WIA program. Tammie Gruhn, Paralegal Instructor

WIA FUNDING Helps Students Launch New Careers

S

Students are taking advantage of WIA

funding to further their educational goals in an effort to secure future success. WIA (Workforce Investment Act) is one of several financial aid options offered to students by the College of Continuing and Professional Education. It is a federal grant that covers training expenses for individuals who have been laid off from employment, or whose household income is at or below the federal poverty level. This funding is designed to benefit job seekers, laid off workers, older youth, incumbent workers, new entrants to the workforce, veterans, persons with disabilities, and employers. After a layoff, Tammie Gruhn picked up a WIA pamphlet at Kennesaw’s Department of Labor office. She had always been interested in the legal field and decided it was time to make a career change. Gruhn went on to graduate from our Paralegal certificate program and is now one of its instructors.

“I would not be where I am in the legal field today without the funding I received through the WIA program,” she said. “I found the application process very easy and the staff was encouraging.” The College offers 30 WIA-approved classroom and online professional certificate programs that provide relevant training in growing industries such as healthcare, technology and management. Additionally, seven bundled programs are offered. For more information or to apply for a WIA grant, contact the One-Stop Workforce Center for the county in which you reside, or the county where you worked when you were laid off from employment. Cobb County’s office information can be found at cobbworks.org. Since the application process takes several weeks, we recommend you don’t delay in getting started. Once approval is awarded, contact our Registration office for a Letter of Acceptance by emailing CEFinancialAid@kennesaw.edu or calling 470-578-6765.
