Sometimes life can feel like a circus
, and we struggle to juggle everything that comes our way. Work, family, sleep, dinner, bills, traffic – I’m exhausted just thinking about it! I’m sure many of you can relate to this. Even those with the most composed demeanor on the outside face challenges privately. So, what barriers can we remove to ease our imbalances, be more productive, and (most importantly) accomplish goals to enhance our lives? Take a cue from Katrina Rowan. As a wife and mother of two, she found herself asking, “What next?” Armed with a degree in public relations, Katrina found success in the sales industry. However, she left the workforce to focus on her family. As her two sons got older, she yearned for a career where she could help others. “What’s next?” was the question she asked herself. The answer came in the form of our Online Paralegal Certificate program. Katrina said the online option allowed her flexibility and convenience while still providing her with tools to be competitive in the job market. Read more about Katrina on page 48. The financial industry
is rapidly changing. As a result, new opportunities arise. Major impacts on the finance industry from new technology, big data, regulations, and cyber-security issues, along with tough new competition from Internet payment processors Google, Amazon, Apple, PayPal, and Square are causing a transformation in traditional finance. According to Robert Half, the world’s first and largest accounting and finance staffing firm, investment banks are recruiting for a rise of big data analytics. Financial services businesses, including the investment banks, generate and store
more data than any other business in any other sector – broadly because it is such a transaction-heavy industry, often driven by models and algorithms. Investment banks are now looking at how they can use big data to do what they do better, faster and more efficiently. Senior executives at the banks want to enhance how they use data to raise profitability, map out markets and company-wide exposures, and ultimately win more deals. Half says finance credentials that have always been preferred are in-demand for 2016. Finance professionals with credentials including CPA (certified public accountant), MBA (masters of business administration), CFA (certified financial advisor), CIA (certified internal auditor), or CGMA (chartered global management accountant) will have an advantage. In response to the market’s growing needs, we have launched two new financial certificate programs – Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis Professional (next class Oct. 11) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP) (projected start April 2017). Additionally, our Bookkeeper Professional certificate course provides a solid base of knowledge and is offered twice a year.
“The traditional finance foundation in accounting doesn’t cut it in today’s competitive global talent market,” said Jennifer Henderson, program manager. “Candidates need tech skills and experience in areas including cloud-based software, data analytics and advanced modeling techniques and SQL, along with business intelligence. Those with advanced Excel skills, risk and compliance expertise, and strong communication and collaboration skills will be in high demand.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment of business and financial operations occupations is projected to grow eight percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations, adding about 632,400 new jobs. A stronger regulatory environment is driving the demand for more accountants and auditors who prepare and examine financial documents. The median annual wage for business and financial occupations was $65,710 in May 2015. Hot jobs in finance include accounting manager, business analyst, compliance officer, financial analyst, information technology auditor,
internal auditor, payroll processor, senior accountant, and staff accountant. What’s your next move? If you’re interested in learning more you have plenty of options. The Culinary Apprenticeship program, now in its seventh year, is getting ready to welcome a new batch of up-and-coming chefs this fall. The intensive nine-month program is designed for aspiring culinary professionals who desire something more than the traditional, classroom-based culinary education. You will work hands-on in the kitchens of accomplished professional chefs who will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the hospitality industry. “The program launched in 2008 with three students. Today, our program has multiple, prestigious apprenticeship locations where students can practice the skills they learn,” said Pam Moss, culinary arts program manager. “We have had many success stories from our program. Students have launched their own restaurants and businesses. The growth we have seen in our program and our graduates is simply amazing.” Complementary to the Culinary Apprenticeship program, the Baking and Pastry Apprenticeship is a unique combination of classroom and real-life experience that will prepare you to enter into the world of professional baking. In this program, you will develop an understanding of the ingredients and techniques used to create artisan breads, specialty cakes, pastries, cookies, pies, and other desserts. Specialty Cakes and Artisan Bread Making courses. Specialty Cakes is a unique course in the art and science of cake decorating. The course provides aspiring cake artists looking to create a cake for a birthday party, anniversary, graduation, or other special occasion the hands-on training and experience they need to decorate like a pro. If you desire the ability to bake fresh, tasty and healthy bread in your own kitchen, our Artisan Bread Making course provides you with the complete baking process including proper kneading techniques, proofing and shaping. In this course, you will use the skills you learn each week to create savory and sweet artisan breads like multi-grain, focaccia, baguettes, pretzels, cinnamon rolls and more. “The beauty of these two tracks is that they can be taken by the seasoned professional who wants to learn more about their craft or the aspiring baker who is just starting off,” said Moss. “The program is for anyone who is looking for a culinary adventure.” This year our college is also introducing a brand-new class, Cooking Fundamentals. This class, also led by professional chefs, will teach every home cook the basic skills and techniques needed to create delicious dishes with a gourmet touch. Cooking Fundamentals will be offered for six consecutive Saturdays, beginning on Oct. 8. “We are thrilled to offer our students the opportunity to explore their interests,” said Moss. “Cooking fundamentals is for individuals who want a basic understanding to good food. The class is designed to be interactive and provide students with skills they can build upon,” she added.

MULTILINGUAL WORKERS IN

TRANSLATOR/ INTERPRETERS
W
• Is the 5th fastest-growing occupation in the U.S. • Employment is projected to grow 46% through 2022 • Median wage $43,590 (as of May 2014) • Entry level positions can earn between $30,000 to $50,000 • The global market for language services is worth $38 billion, a 6.5% increase from 2014 • Language services are crucial in healthcare as diverse patients seek care for increasingly complex treatments Bureau of Labor Statistics
TESOL/ESL
• Greater demand for ESOL teachers is expected due to a growing number of individuals looking to learn or improve their English skills – especially in areas of the U.S. with high immigrant populations (Bureau of Labor Statistics). • ESOL teachers earn a median salary of $41,806, according to PayScale.com.
Whether companies are
conducting business overseas or trying to earn a larger market share at home, employers are increasingly seeking bilingual workers. Employees who are bilingual in English and Spanish are particularly in high demand. Latinos are now the nation’s largest minority group, accounting for half of the population growth since 2001 (U.S. Census Bureau). To locate and secure valuable bilingual workers, employers are willing to pay top dollar. On average, bilingual pay differentials range between five and 20 percent per hour more than the position’s base rate (Salary.com). A recent study found that demand for bilingual employees is expected to rise over the next 10 years, with 70 percent of employers predicting Spanish-speaking skills will be highly sought after among job candidates (Bureau of Labor Statistics). While having a bilingual speaker on staff can be helpful to any business, there are certain business sectors where it is especially beneficial, including education, customer service, legal and healthcare. To better teach students who speak English as a second language, it is important that teachers and other educators, like counselors, are bilingual. Medical practices should have a bilingual speaker on staff to communicate medical information clearly and accurately to patients. Recruiter Korn Ferry cites nearly nine out of 10 headhunters in Europe, Latin America, and Asia say being bilingual is critical for success in today’s business environment. In recognition of this, we have expanded our course offerings that are tailored to benefit the bilingual population. We recently revamped our Medical Interpreter (pg. 29) certificate program and have launched a new Legal Interpreter (pg. 29) certificate program. Interpretation is the unrehearsed

It involves listening to something spoken in a source language and providing an oral or signed equivalent into the target language. “Being an interpreter is a challenging and rewarding experience,” said Lyn Cohen, program manager. “If you desire to enter this thriving career path, these programs will help prepare you for it.” Additionally, the College offers a newly revised TESOL (page 24) certificate program. The enhanced platform is designed to provide a more well-rounded educational experience along with placing individuals in a better position for future opportunities. Cohen said. “Our quality training program focuses on the essential foundations to becoming a teacher of TESOL and TEFL. Hundreds of invaluable resources are provided within the course materials, which now includes an externship for live practice in the ESL classroom.” New hybrid Spanish courses have been added to help speakers gain the fluency they will need to be successful in a bilingual career path. The new Heritage Spanish (page 30) course is designed to assist native Spanish speakers develop their vocabulary and improve their grammar skills. “This course can accommodate students from a wide range of backgrounds,” said Carmen Carvajal, instructor. “Research has shown that being bilingual improves cognitive skills not even related to language. It also helps provide a better understanding and tolerance of different cultures.” What’s your starting point? If you desire to know more, we have you covered.

The path of discovery often
takes many unexpected turns. For Katrina Rowan, her ah-ha moment came from talking to someone who was previously unknown to her. After graduating with a public relations degree, Rowan thrived in multiple sales positions. However, after getting married and having her second child, she decided to step aside from the work world to become a full-time mother. Seven years later, as her two boys have grown older, she began asking herself, “What’s next?” “I wanted to find a career that allowed me to help people,” Rowan said. “A friend of mine suggested that I reach out to her friend – a paralegal in Dallas.” After that conversation, Rowan was intrigued to learn more and began researching the industry and job market outlook. “I was looking for

Katrina Rowan, Online Paralegal Certificate graduate job stability and growth projections,” she said. “I started seeing a trend of law offices replacing junior attorneys with paralegals in an effort to save money for their clients.” Her journey eventually led to our Online Paralegal Certificate program. “I received a KSU

Continuing Education catalog and immediately went to the website and watched the paralegal video,” Rowan said. “I liked that I could obtain a certificate in a short amount of time – as opposed to a fouryear degree. I didn’t know if I could commit to the classroom due to my husband’s work schedule and having two boys at home. The online option worked best for me.” Rowan cites the self-paced, six-month, userfriendly online platform as some of the reasons she chose that route. She also valued the course’s career developmental focus. “The program far exceeded my expectations,” she said. “I especially appreciated the initial focus on building your résumé, looking for a job and the different kinds of jobs to look for.” Rowan was also excited about the amount of writing samples produced throughout the course as those can also be used as work samples when applying for jobs. “It seems like most of the jobs in Atlanta are looking for experience,” Rowan said. “That’s why it’s so important to get your foot in the door and get that experience.” When asked what advice she would give to prospective students considering the program, Rowan suggested talking to others who have already gone through it, diligently researching the paralegal field, and preparing yourself to do a lot of reading. She also strongly encouraged joining prominent local associations such as the Cobb County Legal Professional Association – which she became a member of in 2016. “In this field you really are helping people,” Rowan said, “I’m looking forward to growing my career in paralegal.”

The Labyrinth A Walking Meditation
The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point and then back out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Trained and Certified Labyrinth Facilitator. $49, 3 Hrs Instructor(s): Chris Beam 11/09/2016 1 Session(s) Wed 1:00PM - 4:00PM Course# 172SHRC1202A

Spirits of The Great American West
This class is a very unique look at American History westward from the Mississippi River to California. Major historical events are chronologically tied together with personal accounts, legends and myths. Little known, and rarely addressed events and characters, are woven together in a classroom lecture & group discussion environment using source documents and hard copy maps. Some historical questions are addressed, but are left as “histories mysteries” since there are no complete explanations that resolve them. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one. Students find that Quentin Thomas, a recognized historian, author and cowboy poet, is an entertaining, informative and enlightening instructor.

OLLI COURSES // FOR STUDENTS 50+ Bridge in the 21st Century - Part IIIDefense
The third in a series of courses for beginning and advancing players offered by the American Contract Bridge League and KSU. In this course we look at techniques for defeating contracts that declarer would make if we do not defend carefully. We start by looking at the guidelines for handling specific situations on defense: opening leads, third-hand play, second-hand play and signals. We move on to look at how the defenders establish winners and take their sure tricks. Then we see how the defenders can interfere with declarer’s plan to make the contract. Finally, we take a look at how the defenders formulate their plan and put it into action. This course does not require completion of the first two courses in the series, but it is recommended that the student consider taking those classes prior to taking this class. $99, 16 Hrs Instructor(s): Chris Kohlmiller, Margaret Peabody 10/11/2016 - 12/06/2016 (Omit: 11/22/2016) 8 Session(s) Tue 1:00PM - 3:00PM Course# 172SHRC1058A
