Take a moment to think about
what you wanted to do with your life. Now, think about your current situation. Are your past thoughts about your present life in sync? What does it all mean for your future? I didn’t know that someday I’d be the dean of KSU’s Continuing Education. There were many factors along the way – such as people I met and education and training I received – that set me on a path to where I am today. Alejandra Menacho spent time in the trade show industry but wanted to advance her career. Project management was at the top of her list. Her brother and niece had ties to KSU, so she naturally explored options at the university. That’s where we came in. Our Project Management certificate program was key in Alejandra’s goal. She successfully completed our 3-month course and earned her Project Management Professional certification six weeks later. These three letters – PMP – behind her name have global recognition and respect. Her employer understood the importance of this credential and lent financial support. Now, Alejandra is training for the project manager position and has her eyes set on another career-boosting trio – MBA. Read more on page 34. As you continue to focus on your future, think about your own network and the possibilities that exist for you. Does your employer offer educational vouchers? Have you explored CobbWorks and Georgia Department of Labor’s career resources? Are you a KSU alum who is eligible for continuing education discounts? With 50+ professional certificate programs, take advantage of the many opportunities to make the connection to your future goals. Alejandra did it, and so can you. Turn the page, keep reading, and let’s get started.

Check the computer for tasks that need to be completed. Since this is the best time to get prepared for the day, I may check empty rooms to make sure we are stocked for the day. Carts need to constantly be stocked with gauze, needles, wound cleaner, clean towels, gowns, etc. Quickly check my emails and check my work requirement courses. WellStar requires that courses be completed so employees are always refreshed on policy/procedure.

LIFE In The ER
As an Emergency Room Technician, Breanna Schnitger’s 12-hour shift consists of the unexpected. But she wouldn’t have it any other way. Her career journey began in 2014 after attending an information session about our Phlebotomy course from which she graduated in 2015. She said, “I have now been with WellStar for over two years since obtaining my National Phlebotomy Certification.” Breanna began her career with WellStar Cobb and was also asked to train and assist others in the microbiology lab. She took her skills to WellStar Paulding, a new state-of-art facility in Hiram where she works 12-hour shifts on Saturdays and Sundays. This schedule allows her to be home during the week with her family which includes four small children.
12 OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2017 // 470-578-6765 // ccpe.kennesaw.edu
A second call comes in: There is a patient experiencing severe chest pain. I run down the hall to locate an EKG machine and then to the patient’s room. I find the room is filled with staff, and I start to enter patient information while each co-worker does their specific jobs. I attach all of the leads, print the patient’s EKG, and hand off directly to the doctor.
It is not only direct patient care – much of this job is working on WellStar software and making sure that many of the tasks I complete are documented. This is critical for the patient, myself and doctors/nurses taking care of the patient.
After drawing the blood for this patient, I am responsible for labeling and sending it to the lab for analysis. It is not only important to draw the blood properly since tests can be contaminated, but labs must be labeled with correct times.
First call of the day comes in on my work phone: There is a patient who needs blood cultures to be drawn.

6:30PM
1 more hour and my 12-hour shift is complete.
Phone rings and it’s back out on the floor to find that there are many patients that have been admitted and I start taking them onto the floors dependent upon admission (Med/Surgery, Telemetry, ICU, CDU...)
I check the computer for tasks and see that there is a visual acuity that needs to be done in a patient’s room and there are patients in the behavioral health department that need vitals updated.
I am told by my manager we have a patient who is coming in by ambulance who is unresponsive.
Phone rings - it is a RN who is having problems getting blood from a patient. The RN tells me what labs she is needing and I collect the labs, send the labs, and check off the task in the computer.
7:00PM
6:20PM
On my way past the monitors, I realize that a patient’s oxygen level is 86%. I rush into the room to see the patient in distress and alert the RN. I retrieve a nasal cannula and start the patient on 2 liters of oxygen.
6:00PM
5:15PM
My phone rings as I am walking out of the room, and I am needed to apply a leg splint. The patient is in severe pain and it is my responsibility to calm the patient while also doing my job. The splint is applied and after giving crutch lessons, I am on my way to the next patient.
6:05PM
Patients are filling the waiting area, so I get to work taking patients back one by one accessing vitals. This is crucial in knowing if the patient is critical or not.
5:00PM
LUNCH TIME!!!
3:30PM
1:30PM
I am asked by a doctor in passing to run a repeat EKG on my original chest pain patient.
Phone rings and it is a co-worker needing a lunch break and asking for relief in the Triage department, so I head his way.
3:00PM
12:31PM
Another call comes in -- there is a patient who is currently having seizures and they need assistance in the room.
I sign in to my computer to see that my task list is growing and the priority is EKGs since these are time sensitive.
Third call comes in and it seems as though the day has begun! There is a patient who needs bloodwork done and also a flu test in a room on the other side of the ER.
many opportunities. Not to mention how much more prepared I will be when entering a nursing program – my goal – in 3-4 years.” For the time being, the hospital will continue to keep Breanna on her toes. She said, “This area of the [Emergency Department] is never boring. Patients come in to Triage in pain and needing help. There is never a dull moment or lack of tears, blood and constant alert. My goal is that I provide a positive experience in a sometimes tense environment. I am inspired each time I work to do better for myself and for others.”

Breanna said the unpredictability of the triage section of the Emergency Department makes the time pass quickly. She also continues to utilize the skills learned in our program. “Since this hospital is smaller, they do not offer a Phlebotomy team as do the larger hospitals such as Kennestone and Cobb,” Breanna said. “My current position is in the ER as a technician where I use my phlebotomy skills on a daily basis and also other skills such as EKGs, splint application and accessing vitals.” Her decision to pursue her Phlebotomy certificate has motivated her to continue her education. She said, “I am glad that I chose to get my certification and believe that it has allowed me

Coordination domination took Mattie Logan Terakami around the world with her Meeting & Event Management certificate in tow. She was featured on the cover of our magazine in 2015 and shared her experience in our program and subsequent success in the hospitality industry. As an associate account manager for a full-service meeting and event planning company – with an emphasis on incentive group travel – Mattie was able to take her talents to Germany, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and a host of other countries. “I owe my career in planning to this program,” she said. “It gives you the tools to build a career and support to help you grow and succeed.” Today, Mattie is the e-commerce manager for fab’rik (www.fabrikstyle.com), a clothing boutique company with more than 40 locations nationwide. Her Meeting & Event Management certificate and previous position are both instrumental in her new role. “Whether you get certified to plan meetings, weddings, conferences, or even travel programs, it is all about the experience,” Mattie explains. “As an event planner, you create the scene, tone, and environment of your guests. As an e-commerce manager, I create the same level of service and environment for online shoppers, to keep them coming back time and again. Our world is turning into a place where experience living is at the helm and because of this, the hospitality and service industry will always be thriving!” Education was the key for Mattie’s career progression, and she lauds the opportunities a professional certificate can provide.
20 OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2017 // 470-578-6765 // ccpe.kennesaw.edu
“The greatest thing I have done for my career is go back to school. I had a dream, passion, and sought what I needed to in order to achieve it,” she said. “This opportunity opens so many doors! The subjects studied during my course, and real-life tests at my previous job I got through successful course completion, got me to where I am today and can get you to the next level in your professional career.” Mattie said the hospitality industry is a great fit for her due to the opportunities she has had to interact with others and make their day. Receiving positive feedback – whether it’s from an event she’s hosted or a fab’rik customer – is Mattie’s motivation. She also thrives on the creativity and ever-changing environments. “[It] ultimately keeps me coming back for more! Having a service-oriented mindset is something I’ve strived for as long as I can remember,” she said. “I may not know what I want to do for the rest of my life. Project Management Grad Enhances Professional Trajectory
After working in the trade show
industry for six years, Alejandra Menacho was ready to take the next step. As a detailer for the Kennesaw marketing company Derse, Menacho desired to advance her career by learning to become a project manager. Already familiar with KSU due to her proximity and seeing several of her family members attend the university, she registered for CCPE’s Project Management certificate program after receiving financial support from her employer. The fact that the program was conveniently located and offered evening classes were several reasons Menacho enrolled. And the commitment from Derse to reimburse her half of the costs was just icing on the cake. “I wanted to learn more about managing projects, costs and leadership,” Menacho said. “I knew this [class] was going to be something that would help me in my career.” With the ultimate goal of earning her PMP (Project Management Professional) credential, Menacho said the class did a great job preparing her for the certification exam. The PMP is the most widely-recognized and respected credential in the profession awarded by the PMI (Project Management Institute). Project integration and control, time and cost management, and communication and quality management are among the skill sets taught in the project management course. The three-month program is instructed by Pete Schestopol and Francine Warner, who have 50+ years of combined experience in national and international project

management. Additionally, it’s a registered PMI Education Provider, giving students like Menacho a top of the line experience. “I liked it being a three-month program,” she said. “It gives you time to truly understand all the information instead of being given to you in five days like most boot camps do.” Menacho cited time management, understanding more project concepts and how to handle a variety of projects as the most vital sources of information she learned in the course. She said that 80 percent of the exam preparation was provided by the class and the remaining 20 was done on her own after the class ended. “I would’ve never been able to do this by myself,” she said. “It’s important because I knew this would help me move forward in my career.” After the class concluded she continued to study the course materials and also took several practice exams. Entering the exam, Menacho felt prepared and confident due to the advice of her instructors who suggested taking it as soon as possible. Six weeks after completing the program, she passed her PMP exam. Menacho now implements the knowledge gained from the program in her workplace. As a result, she was recently alerted by her supervisor that she has been selected to begin training for her coveted project manager position. She hopes to be fully trained within six months. However, education never stops for Menacho who said her next goal is to obtain her MBA. “When you finish this class, you become very motivated,” she said.
I knew this would be something that would help me in my career. Alejandra Menacho, Project Management Graduate

The Labyrinth - A Walking Meditation
The labyrinth, known to be at least 4,000 years old, has been used by many cultures, countries, and faiths around the world. It is a walking meditation on a spiral path leading to a central point, and then back out again. Like the spiral found in nature, such as the conch shell, the pine cone, or the rose blossom, the labyrinth is also a curving line around a central point, symbolizing movement, growth, change, and providing a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. Walking a labyrinth is a metaphor for life - the path shifts in unexpected ways, sometimes away from your goal, but ultimately leading to the center. It is a powerful meditation tool, helping to quiet the mind and allowing time for personal reflection. Learn about the labyrinth,

Classic Film Noir
Night and the city; hard boiled detectives and sinister femme fatales; damaged heroes and innocent ingenues. These are some of the ingredients that make up one of the most original genres in American film history. From the early 1940s to the late 1950s these mostly low budget black and white films captured the cynicism and disillusionment of post World War II America, while at the same time introducing some of the most skilled directors and most iconic actors of the 20th century (Humphrey Bogart, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Barbara Stanwyck, and Ava Gardner). This 7-week course will analyze some of the most well known films of this period, beginning with “Double Indemnity” and including such classics as “The Big Sleep,” “The Killers,” and “Out of the Past.” So grab your old trenchcoat and join us for a visit to the dark side of the big city streets.

Spirits of The Great American West
This class is a very unique look at American History westward from the Mississippi River to California. Major historical events are chronologically tied together with personal accounts, legends and myths. Little known and rarely addressed events and characters are woven together in a classroom lecture & group discussion environment using source documents and hard copy maps. Some historical questions are addressed, but are left as “histories mysteries” since there are no complete explanations
that resolve them. Facts are woven together with legends and common sense to make history come alive as you have never experienced it. This class is frequently repeated by students who find each session equally as informative as the preceding one. Students find that Quentin Thomas, a recognized historian, author and cowboy poet, is an entertaining, informative and enlightening instructor. $99, 12 Hrs Instructor(s): Quentin Thomas 09/27/17 - 11/15/17 8 Session(s) Wed 10:30AM - 12PM Course# 181SHIS2565A
Faces of “America’s Greatest Generations” Since 1776
The “American Experience,” sometimes called the “American Dream” rises from the ashes of war again and again since the founding of the American Nation in the late 18th century. In the 19th century the term “Manifest Destiny” exploded to the forefront of the explanations and justifications for frontier “pioneers” to patriotically fill in all the land between both oceans no matter the personal sacrifice. The 20th century, pockmarked with a new form of poverty and massive systems failure, resonates to this day with the hopes and achievements of successfully

While many closely track contemporary elections, we seldom reflect on elections of the past. Pre-1990. This class will look at the founders debates and ideas that led to Article II of the constitution, “The Executive,” or the office of the president. OLLI COURSES // FOR STUDENTS 50+ FITNESS The Labyrinth - A Walking Meditation
Learn about the labyrinth, walk a large canvas labyrinth, and center yourself in quietness and reflection in this class hosted by a Veriditas Trained and Certified Labyrinth Facilitator. Extended labyrinth walk, meditation and journal writing time from 3-4 p.m. $49, 3 Hrs Instructor(s): Chris Beam 11/01/17 1 Session(s) Wed 1PM - 4PM Course# 182SHRC1202A

You’re in this class because you want to be there, and you’re going to give 110%.
{2}
But … you might be older than your teacher. #AdultLearnerLife
{7}
After you get that certificate, you’re hanging it in a prominent place. You already have the spot picked out. E-ve-r-y-b-o-d-y is going to know. As they should.
{3}
Knowing the location of Wi-Fi hotspots is key.
{8}
Your final project is something you can actually use in your career. And it’s going to look nice in your portfolio.
{4}
Procrastination comes as a result of a sick kid – not because of a night out socializing with your friends.
{9}
You update your LinkedIn profile with your new credential and add your instructor as a connection.
{5}
You sometimes do homework alongside your kids and find yourself a little jealous of how easy theirs is. (A baking soda volcano? Why can’t that be 10% of your grade?)
