Tweets, shares, likes and hashtags – it’s a part of our daily lives. Technology is a driving force for individuals and businesses, and social media is a major part of how we interact with each other. A little more than a decade ago, you would contact customer service by calling a 1-800 number, writing a letter or sending an email. Today, a simple tweet or posting on a company’s Facebook wall is how millions of consumers interact with businesses. Derek Brott knows all about this, and he’s building his career based on the knowledge gained from his Social Media Marketing course with us. He earned a degree in marketing in 2012, and our social media course has allowed him to be more competitive in the marketing industry. Although he works full-time in media production, Derek is also building his brand through entreprenuership with his social media business. As far as his future, he said, “I’m excited about the direction in which I’m headed.” That is truly the definition of #winning. Do you want to connect with us? You can find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. We also have a blog where we highlight our students, instructors, events and more. In our Basic Office Technology class, you will experience real-world training of multiple devices such as apps, computers, smartphones and digital cameras. Additionally, you will become savvy with Microsoft Office 2013 products, security safety, ethics and privacy. “This is a hardware and software class designed to get individuals returning to the workplace up to speed on office technology,” Doug Vanderbilt, class instructor, said. “It’s not a technology class – we’re not taking computers apart – but students will become comfortable with using technology in the workplace.” One of our Meeting & Event Management instructors, Jeff Whitney, says the course is great for anyone who has an interest in the meetings/events industry, seeking a career change, or currently works within the industry and wants to broaden their knowledge, understanding and expertise. “I owe my career in planning to this program,” said Mattie Logan, program graduate. “It gives you the tools to build a career and support to help you grow and succeed.” Our Project Management program gives you the opportunity to master skills that are crucial in multiple industries with a qualification most employers seek in job candidates. Earning this certificate will enhance your expertise and expand your career options. “The material and pace of the course is amazing, updated and suitable for people with all levels of project management experience,” Jose Lantigua, program graduate, said. “For the past 14 years, I have been a mission planner for the Army, a job closely related to project management,” said Darrell Vaughan, 2014 graduate who used VA Education Benefits. “The project management program has validated my military experiences and helped me apply them to the civilian sector.” One of our newest management programs is Lean Six Sigma. It is comprised of two courses – Yellow Belt and Green Belt. Lean Six Sigma is a proven, projectdriven strategy to improve quality, increase customer satisfaction and deliver bottom-line results. Instructed by Dr. Bill Bailey, the program is ideal for anyone involved in process improvement, managers, engineers and other improvement team members. Lean Six Sigma began within the manufacturing industry, but is applicable to all organizations small and large. The Yellow Belt is ideally for team members rather than leaders. Relevant training from seasoned professionals could be the key to the job you desire. Are you ready to take the first step to a fulfilling career?

• There are only 127 certified geriatricians in Georgia, against a need for 442 based on the elderly population. • Georgia is projected to have 1.9 million residents over 65 by 2030, up from 1 million in 2014. • The problem is nationwide. It’s estimated that 30,000 geriatricians will be needed by 2030 to care for 21 million elderly. There were just over 7,000 in 2014. • Older adults account for one-quarter of all doctor’s office visits, onethird of all hospital stays, and more than one-third of emergency medical responses. Four in five need care for chronic conditions like heart disease, hypertension and arthritis.

Since graduation, I have started a company called iLoveKare LLC, a lifelong community resource center. We bridge the gap between aging adults, caretakers and the community.

healthcare field? Need assistance getting started? We’re here to help. The healthcare industry continues to flourish, offering some of the market’s most stable and rewarding careers. We offer 12 classroom-based professional certificate courses and more than 25 online-based programs. “Our healthcare programs provide a tremendous avenue to enhance one’s knowledge and expertise in the field,” said Andrea Cochran, program director. “These courses have helped students start a new career, change careers or advance in their current position. Many of them also serve as preparation for specific certification exams.” As one of the fastest growing employment fields, healthcare was recently cited by the AJC as one of Georgia’s hottest jobs – growing by 17% since 2009. In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics named healthcare as the largest industry showing the highest amount of growth of any other field – projected to add 3 million more jobs by 2016. The Medical Billing & Coding Specialist Program recently announced a new partnership with the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC). The new relationship will benefit our Medical Billing and Coding Specialist students looking to enter the rapidly growing healthcare field. This makes us the only school in the metro Atlanta area to offer this partnership. Offering nursing CNEs is another example of how we help our students remain at the top of their

profession. Registered nurses must complete 30 continuing education hours in order to renew licenses expiring on or after Jan. 31, 2016. We provide the solution with 15 online certificate courses approved for the required continuing education hours. The Healthcare program instructors are full-time experts in their respective fields and bring real-world, practical experience to share with the students. They represent hospitals such as WellStar, Northside, Piedmont, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as well as pharmacies at Publix, CVS and WellStar. Impressively, our graduates boast a 94% national certification exam pass rate, surpassing the national average of 73% and the Georgia mark of 64%. “This class provided all the skills I needed to know, that I wouldn’t have known before, about working in a medical office,” said Christina Wolford, 2014 Medical Office Assistant graduate. “Overall, I really enjoyed the program. It equips you for future jobs.” “I’d always heard a lot of good things about the medical programs at KSU,” said Melissa Amavisca, 2014 Certified Nursing Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician and EKG Technician Graduate. “The programs gave me the real-world experience needed to work in a hospital and become a nurse.” Reveal the path that’s right for you. More information on these opportunities can be found in this magazine or on our website. We look forward to journeying with you toward success.

CULINARY GRAD’S FOOD TRUCK BIZ

HITS THE

ROAD E

Edgard Sanchez, 2014 Culinary Apprenticeship certificate graduate, has established himself as an emerging culinary star. His meteoric rise in the food truck world has mirrored Atlanta’s booming food truck market. He recently auditioned his business, C’est Tout Bon 2 Eat, for the Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race and his vehicle was awarded MobileCuisine.com’s 2015 Best Food Truck Graphic Design of the Year. Additionally, Sanchez has been featured in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Marietta Daily Journal, Cobb Life Magazine and Yahoo! Finance. Sanchez says the skills he learned in the program have been invaluable. “My passion for cooking ignited as I was trained by a great instructor and several Sous Chefs at Park 75 at The Four Seasons, Atlanta,” he said. The 22-year military veteran used VA Education Benefits to pay for his enrollment. “Hoping for the best for my daughters, I transferred my GI Bill benefits over to them so they could attend college,” he said. “However, once I learned about KSU’s culinary program, I consolidated all my remaining benefits and managed to attend.” The French business name of “C’est Tout Bon 2 Eat” means “It’s All Good To Eat.” Sanchez’s Cajun menu is a tribute to New Orleans, where he spent most of his childhood. “With Latin roots and a taste of what New Orleans had to offer, my mother would prepare some of the best meals I can remember,” he said. As the youngest of six kids, he was always interested in helping his mom in the kitchen. After graduating, Sanchez teamed up with his friend Milton Mouzon. Sanchez loved cooking, Mouzon loved eating at food trucks, and they both loved making money. It was a match made in heaven. They developed

a business partnership allowing Sanchez to follow his dream. With limited finances, he was able to find the “deal of a lifetime” by winning an auction on eBay for a food truck. After driving to Virginia to pick up the truck, his new entrepreneurial adventure began. Officially launching his business last November, Sanchez is now going full speed ahead. He can routinely be found at various locations throughout Atlanta four to five days a week. One prominent place his truck has been seen is at SkyView Atlanta. His simple menu screams New Orleans – beignets, bayou burgers, pimento grilled cheese sandwiches, crawfish egg rolls and his best seller, the fried shrimp po-boy. Sanchez says he loves seeing the satisfaction of people’s faces after they bite into something he just created. “With a little help, I can continue this dream and provide a gourmet experience for foodies in the Atlanta area and travelers alike,” he said. The skills and talents Sanchez honed in our program led him down an inspiring path of becoming an entrepreneur who has started his own food truck business. Edgard Sanchez did it. What will you do?

“Every class is hands-on,” said Wichuda Jimbhasut, 2014 graduate. “It’s a good opportunity to get into the kitchen with professional chefs. Two Mystery Basket nights, a Catered Affair and a Chef’s Table event all add to the well-rounded experience. Over 12 weeks you will be introduced to the theory and concepts necessary to create a successful landscape design. View and critique other plans to learn what works and why. Learn about material options for hardscapes like walkways, ponds, arbors and more. Students will put learning into practice with three drawing assignments during the course, evaluating design found in other gardens, and a site visit to a commercial plant nursery to aid in learning identification and

Derek Brott lives by the mantra, “Learn through experiences, educate yourself through opportunities.” At just 26, he has personified his goals through his actions and career progression. The recent Social Media Marketing graduate has always had marketing in his blood. As a student at East Paulding High School, Brott was a member of several marketing clubs that participated in state and regional competitions. In 2012, he earned a bachelor’s degree from KSU in business administration with a concentration in marketing. “I’m very passionate about marketing – especially creative and visual media,” Brott said. “I knew taking this class would be a great way to learn how to promote my services and market myself.” As an undergraduate, Brott enrolled in several marketing classes led by Tyra Burton – who also serves as instructor for CCPE’s Social Media Marketing certificate program. “She is extremely engaging and very invested in her students,” he said. “She wants to see you do well.” “What people don’t understand about social media is that it’s not going away,” Burton said. “It’s also something that regardless of your target market, more than likely they are on social media. So whether it’s somebody’s grandpa or grandson, they are on social media and there is a platform that caters to them.” After attending Burton’s free information session at one of CCPE’s Career Training Expos, the aspiring

entrepreneur knew the program would be beneficial to his burgeoning business. “The hardest thing for most people is marketing and branding themselves,” he said. A full-time technical director, Brott has shifted his focus the past two years on what he describes as his “side hustle.” He is mainly referring to his recently launched social media marketing business – which includes website design, social media consulting and blogging. He also uses his learned skills to promote his DJing endeavors. Brott is most active on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram and also uses Google+ and Pinterest. Additionally, he is learning new live-streaming apps Meerkat and Twitter’s Periscope. The training he received in class has proved invaluable. As a social media consultant, he advises, “You don’t have to be on every social media site. You will drown. I tell people, find the one platform you have the most interaction with and solely focus on that. Once you have that automated, then branch out.” When asked about the future of social media, Brott sees it continually expanding. He notes the emergence of wearable tech, specifically with the Apple Watch and Fitbit fitness bracelets. Brott perks up when mentioning how real-time live Q&A sessions are transforming webinars with the use of platforms like Periscope. However, perhaps the biggest trend in social media is how it’s affected the size of companies. “Large corporations are becoming smaller through social media as they interact with their fans/customers,” he explained. “They humanize experiences which relates to customers. The ability to niche down your target market is huge in social media.” Another takeaway from Brott’s class experience was learning how to effectively use social media research to build and grow his business. “I’m excited about the direction I’m headed. The tools I’ve gained from this class have been relevant and applicable.”

ERNEST VARNER Professional Artist, Art Instructor

Ernest Varner has been teaching portrait drawing and painting courses for the College of Continuing and Professional Education at KSU for nearly 20 years and said art is his first love. He said, “I believe I was born an artist, and that is what I was going to do. But there was a war going on, and I decided to join the military.” Ernest spent more than 20 years in the Army but also had the opportunity to study art during his service. He said standing in front of the statue of David was a significant moment for him. “All of that stuff influences a person’s art,” Ernest said. “[It] influenced my art because I was able to be exposed to the originals.” Being able to teach has been rewarding. Ernest said, “One of my passions is teaching people who are a little intimidated by it because I learned in such a way were if you could sign your name, and you apply yourself, and a little patience, I can teach you to do portraits.” He also said he enjoys creating images that express how he sees the world. “I like to teach my students to become familiar with the term ‘in the zone.’ [This] is when your body is relaxed, the mind is not chattered, and the only thing that is left is the spirit that is able to explore and create.”

Fusterlandia, a compilation of mosaic creations was created by Jose Fuster. He is described as Cuba’s version of Howard Finster from Georgia. Additionally, they enjoyed a guided tour of his studio where they purchased original pieces. The group of artists also visited a senior center where they completed quick watercolor sketches of its residents. The Museum of Fine Art was also part of their experience. They were able to admire the collections of Cuban artists; specifically the largest collection of paintings by Cuban artist Wifredo Lam. Atlanta’s High Museum of Art exhibited his paintings in May.
