YOU CAN DO IT!

C

Can you believe we are only a few

weeks away from ushering in 2016? For me, a new year always brings in notions of reflecting on new beginnings, inspirations and opportunities. The ability for reinvention and rejuvenation is so inspiring. Just ask Vikki Hughes. Her inner voice spurred her career transformation from retail management to language education. After taking our Spanish courses, she was encouraged to pursue a Teaching English as a Second Language certificate. Today, Vikki has been able to connect with hundreds of people in the community who desire to learn English through her work with the English as a Second Language program at the Catholic Church of the Transfiguration in Marietta. Read more about her exciting journey on Page 20. Speaking of rejuvenation, our TESOL program now has a new exciting format – including the addition of an externship! Like many of our programs, we aim to provide beneficial pathways for you through apprenticeships, site tours, guest speakers and other chances for hands-on learning and exposure to industry professionals. Now, it’s your turn for personal empowerment, reinvention and success. Mark your calendars for January 7 for our brand-new Open House. Take this step, and we’ll be with you the rest of way. So many of our graduates have been able to launch businesses, gain promotions and impact others. Soon, you’ll be among the ranks of successful students who can truly say,

“I Did It!” Sincerely,

BE YOUR OWN

BOSS Several courses pave the way for aspiring entrepreneurs Do you dream of owning your own business?

Being your own boss? Setting your own schedule? Did you know we have several professional training programs that will set you on the path to do just that? The economy and job market are shifting with more people starting their own businesses or working as an independent contractor or freelancer. Inc.com stated that 63% of people in their 20s either own their own business or want to someday, and of those who were not already entrepreneurs, 55% hope to be in the future. Today, a new form of entrepreneur is emerging. Our Culinary Apprenticeship program provides essential training for individuals who desire to work in restaurants or catering companies. Several students aspire to become executive chefs or business owners. Two of our recent graduates are prefect examples of this. Edgard Sanchez is a 22-year military veteran. He used his remaining VA Education Benefits to enroll in our culinary program. The skills he learned proved instrumental in his efforts of launching his own food truck business which has garnered a significant amount of local and national media exposure. His truck’s French name of “C’est Tout Bon 2 Eat” means “It’s All Good To Eat.” Its eye-catching exterior was crowned Mobile-Cuisine.com’s 2015 Best Food Truck Graphic Design of the Year. Sanchez’s Cajun menu is a tribute to New Orleans, where he spent most of his childhood. Another culinary graduate, Margaret Karidza, successfully reinvented herself. After spending 15 years in corporate sales, she followed her true passion of cooking. “When I’m cooking, I don’t feel like I’m working,” she said. Karidza has opened her own restaurant called Spot 364 in Mableton. The establishment mixes her favorite tastes from Africa and America that features several signature burgers and sandwiches.

#Success: Derek Brott implemented the skills and knowledge he learned in our Social Media Marketing program and started his own business. “I knew taking this class would be a great way to learn how to promote my services and market myself,” he said. Brott says one of the most challenging things people face is how to market and brand themselves. His social media marketing business aims to assist clients in website design, social media consulting and blogging. After qualifying for military benefits through MyCAA (for spouses of active duty and activated National Guard and Reserve Service members), Pat Davis enrolled in our Meeting & Event Management program. The education and experience she received in the course led her to join the Georgia chapter of MPI (Meeting Professional International) and start her own conference and meeting business called Realized Events.

Our Professional Development in Gerontology certificate program fields a very diverse group of students. Individuals from all walks of life enroll in the course for a variety of reasons. Many are seeking to start or build their current business designed to work with older adults. Chris Foster said the class gave him the opportunity to expand his knowledge and keep his competitive edge in the Atlanta market. “I own and operate one of the largest non-medical home care agencies in Atlanta,” he said. “This course helped me understand my clients and how my caregivers will interact with them on a daily basis and has allowed me to communicate better with my staff, clients and their families.”

Are you an aspiring entrepreneur? What’s your next move?

A JOURNEY OF REINVENTION TESOL graduate relishes life-changing opportunities

R

Reinvention comes in many forms.

After serving a previous life in retail management, Vikki Hughes’ inner voice kept telling her, “Now is the time to learn Spanish.” It was something she’d always thought about, but work and family were higher priorities that consumed most of her time and energy. Already familiar with the College from previously taking a computer course, Hughes enrolled in her first Spanish class through OLLI which offers courses designed for seasoned adults 50 and over. On her first day of class, she immediately knew she made the right decision. Thrilled with her learning progress, partly due to outstanding teaching, Hughes matriculated through Spanish I, II, and III. “Nancy DeLisle-Brown was one of my favorite teachers,” Hughes said. “She made the class an experience which helped me immensely with language retention/acquisition. It wasn’t just book work.” DeLisle-Brown said, “Vikki is very enthusiastic and an encourager to everyone. She is very oriented to people’s interests and will do anything within her power to help others achieve their goals.” As her language quest progressed, she thought about her own place of worship and how she could help the Spanish speaking members. When Hughes contacted Yolanda Berrios, coordinator of Hispanic Ministries, at The Catholic Church of the Transfiguration in Marietta, she was asked to teach English. “I laughed and said I would try,” Hughes said. “At the time it seemed like a complete reversal of my objective. However, I found out I enjoyed teaching. The students were learning English and it provided me Spanish speaking exposure.”

I remember one day driving to KSU thinking my life is changing drastically… Vikki Hughes, TESOL graduate

20

Reflecting on her Spanish class experiences, Hughes remembered how the teachers orchestrated and implemented their lessons. She realized she needed to equip herself in this manner in order to maximize classroom instruction time and increase student language absorption. That’s when her inner voice started speaking again. “I registered for TESOL classes this time and encountered a program with substance,” Hughes said. “The format exemplified the latest in TESOL education with a well-rounded curriculum. Maura Nicholson, a seasoned and gifted teacher, produced engaging and thought provoking lessons that evoked student-centered

learning. Fortified with knowledge, resources and empirical exposure, I was ready to move forward.” “Vikki was an outstanding student in both our TESOL program and Spanish courses,” said Lyn Cohen, CCPE’s Languages program manager. “After finishing the TESOL program in 2013, she reached out to me in an effort to locate prospective teachers in the community. We assisted her with recruitment for instructors using the job board for TESOL grads.” This led to a partnership between Transfiguration (TFIG) and CCPE creating reciprocal benefits for both. TESOL graduates volunteer teach in TFIG ESL classrooms gaining valuable hands-on experience while the students receive knowledgeable and professional instruction. For the past three years under Hughes’ guidance, the ESL program at Transfiguration has flourished. Semester enrollments are up to 50-75 students with six to eight teachers and assistants. Additionally, Beginner and Intermediate Spanish classes have been added to the church’s language program. She says the biggest reward and motivation is seeing the students’ progress. “Vikki’s an excellent ambassador for CCPE,” Nicholson said. “She opened her school to student observations and even hired graduates of the TESOL program. She’s a perfect example of someone who took advantage of what the College of Continuing and Professional Education has to offer and ran with it.” As Hughes’ journey continues, she is now focused on building more community awareness by supporting similar programs for social justice and economic value. She is also planning on returning to CCPE to enroll in a grant-writing course. Additionally, she is exploring job opportunities for teaching online courses as well as making travel plans to Latin America to teach English and for Spanish culture immersion. “I remember one day driving to KSU thinking my life is changing drastically from a retail business owner of 20 years into an educator. Is this really happening? At that very moment I looked to the side of the road and on the marquee of a tiny church read, ‘Even Moses was a basket case.’ I laughed and cried at the same time.” In the meantime, Hughes will continue developing the TFIG ESL program, along with her teaching skills and résumé, while listening for her inner voice to say, “Vamos!”

HACK ATTACK ARE YOU AT RISK?

Problems defined, solutions refined with information security program

W

What do Home Depot, Target, the Federal Government, Sony, eBay, Apple, UPS and health insurer Anthem have in common? They are all victims of hackers. The New York Times article titled “House Passes Cybersecurity Bill After Companies Fall Victim to Data Breaches” mentioned an expansive measure that would push companies to share access to their computer networks and records with federal investigators. The House bill would provide legal liability protections for companies that share cyberthreat information with each other or with the government. According to cnet.com, companies are spending billions of dollars to protect from determined hack attacks. In 2014, companies spent an estimated $71.1 billion on cybersecurity, up nearly eight percent from

the year before. Recognizing cybercrime as an evergrowing problem, the FBI established a new division called the “Cyber Division” at FBI Headquarters to set priorities, establish protocols and identify qualified personnel to handle investigations. To assist in being a part of the solution, our Information Systems Security Professional (ISSP) certificate program (page 31) is designed to create superhero cybercrime fighters. The 78-hour program will teach you to secure information systems while becoming thoroughly familiar with the domains of the CISSP® Common Body of Knowledge (CISSP CBK®). Additionally, the course will teach you the essentials of Information Systems Security while helping prepare you for the CISSP® exam – one of the most highly regarded information systems security certifications available.

NATHANIEL GRAY, ISSP graduate

Recent ISSP grad Nathaniel Gray, who previously worked in IT as a storage specialist, reflected on his decision to take the course. “This is an open field, and I’m in the process of reinventing myself,” he said. “I can use the knowledge and information I learned from this course to go into a lot of different areas.”

Microsoft Office Certificate

Our Microsoft Office Certificate gives you the skills to efficiently and professionally manage your workload. Have the confidence of knowing the best application, or combination of applications, to successfully organize and complete your task. It can make all the difference in how you feel about your job. Attend both levels of the following applications to receive our Microsoft Office Certificate.
