The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offers an impressive selection of educational and social opportunities for adults age 50 and older. With a purpose to promote lifelong learning and continued intellectual and personal growth for retirementage individuals, OLLI has become the place for fun,

interactive learning in a safe and encouraging environment. Our curriculum draws from the interests, talents and experiences of older adult learners. Academic courses are college level (without the homework, term papers and tests), and cover everything from personal computers to fitness for life and visual arts. Social activities include various gatherings for dinner, laughter and entertainment. Every student that enrolls in our courses or programs becomes one of our OLLI members and will begin to receive our quarterly Newsletter. Our members become part of our unique OLLI family where learning is a continuous part of our culture. Our members are proud to be a part of OLLI, and many of them have developed close friendships and experienced memorable learning opportunities. Come join us and see what OLLI can do for you!

PAT’S PORTAL The community at OLLI continues to grow. Whether you are an active OLLI member or someone who is looking to participate, you will find adventure and excitement as you look through each page of course and trip listings. If our abundance of options makes it difficult for you to make your decision, then, do not hesitate to contact me. I will help you sort out your ideas, plan your goals, and get setup with everything OLLI. Join OLLI’s Travel Group for getaways to the destinations of your dreams. This past May, OLLI took a trip to the historic lands of Ireland. It was an amazing trip for everyone who traveled. We visited the Cliffs of Moher, Kylemore Abbey, and Giant’s Causeway, which was my personal favorite stop of the tour. We had the pleasure to see the columns made from 40,000 year old, cooled lava. The columns were massive, stretching from the sea to the foot of the cliffs. Other highlights of the trip were Belfast, the Titanic Experience, and everyone’s favorite…the Hillsborough Castle where the Royal Family of Northern Ireland live. Our travelers enjoyed the guided tour of the Castle as they walked through elegant interiors and viewed luxurious, regal rooms. We also visited other infamous castles in Dublin and Kilkenny. The group spent its leisure time traversing the Ring of Kerry and destinations like, the Kissing Stone at Blarney Castle and the House of Waterford Crystal. Every

day was magical as we walked the medieval, cobblestone streets packed with Old World charm and visited the historic ports of the country-side alongside their fishing towns. Near the end of the trip, we took a private boat to Garinish Island in Bantry Bay, where the beauty of Ireland can be seen for miles. Many OLLI students described their experience as a fulfillment of something on their bucket list. For others, the gorgeous, green, rolling hills and the picturesque thatched cottages were something they will never forget. We will cover line drawing, placement and proportion of objects, perspective, appropriate shading of colors and other basics. By the end of the course, students should be able to understand and replicate various essential drawing skills into a simple image suitable for display.

Additionally, students will be granted the opportunity to personalize their study based on their own interests. With one-on-one guidance, students will individually incorporate their personal style into their crafts.

While some drawing experience is preferred, it is not a requirement. During this course, the instructor will cover a comprehensive procedure for drawing a portrait. Students will study the features and structures that make up the human face, the importance of proportion, and learn how to effectively and accurately illustrate these skills on paper.

This painting method can be used to create a wide variety of styles, forms, and details. In this course, students will be introduced to gouache painting methods and techniques. Students will also study some of the history behind this ancient form of art.

In addition to practicing flower painting techniques, students will explore the incorporation of: complimentary objects, containers, and backgrounds. In this 5 hour workshop you will design your own cards, recycle your old paintings, cut and paint your cards to fit your envelopes. In time, you may even be able to address a few. There will be a small fee payable to instructor on the day of class.

Paint Your Holiday Card $69 | Instructor(s): Kathy Rennell Forbes 11/06/2019 - 11/06/2019 1 Session(s) Wed 10AM - 3PM In this workshop, participants will create a personalized holiday card in watercolor. Working from holiday photos or other items, participants will paint one of several still-life setups. The instructor will provide guidance and a list of local printing companies to replicate your holiday masterpiece. Prior drawing and watercolor experience is required. Learn to quickly capture the moments and memories of your travel by keeping a sketch diary of your trip. We will cover the basics of travel sketching with pen and watercolors for complete beginners and those with some sketching experience. We will discuss equipment needed and how to build a sketching kit. We will cover basic watercolor and sketching techniques while capturing the essence of your subject. We will spend at least one class outside on location to practice our skills in the real world.

Fighting Sail: America in the War of 1812 $99 | Instructor(s): Tom Metcalf 07/08/2019 - 08/12/2019 6 Session(s) Mon 6:30PM - 8:30PM When the War of 1812 began, the U.S. had a 17-ship blue water navy to face the 600plus ships of the British. In this course we will examine the events leading up to the war, the construction and deployment of the six “super” frigates, the officer corps of the fledgling Navy, and the various sea battles and action, including those on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. We will use firsthand narratives and cover a potpourri of nautical facts and trivia.

Sherman — officers with different personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. In this course, students will learn about the military use of aeronautics, submersibles, the telegraph (a 19th-century version of texting) and the role of the railroads in moving men and materials. Optional Textbook: “Trial by Fire: Science, Technology, and the Civil War.” Author: Charles Ross.

With their sleek lines and billowing sails, these ships raced to deliver cargoes in record time. This course details the birth, glory years, and decline of the Clipper. We examine the design in detail, Matthew Fontaine Maury’s work mapping the oceans, the men and women of the Clipper trade, and Clippers that made notable voyages, including the Great Tea Race of 1866.

Reflections on Elections $69 | Instructor(s): Quentin Thomas 08/21/2019 - 09/25/2019 6 Session(s) Wed 11AM - 12:30PM Set prior to 1990, this class will look at the founders’ debates and ideas that led to Article II of the Constitution. Discussion will also address the personalities and challenges that met by past Presidents, including their impact on the nation, the world, and their legacies.

Discover legendary women, the great Native American civilizations and cultures, the real American cowboy, how the West was populated, and crime and outlaws.

Civil War in the Western Theatre $119 | Instructor(s): Michael Shaffer 10/21/2019 - 12/9/19 8 Session(s) Mon 6PM-8PM In this course, students will explore the military action at many battle locations. Learn about the commanding officers involved in the areas, which, most historians agree, decided the outcome of the war. There will be an optional textbook available for purchase.
