THE RAILROAD

THE VOLLAND STORE

FARMERS & RANCHERS

THE POPULATION

For the first 75 years of Volland’s life, the Rock Island Railway played a big role in the growth and subsistence of the Flint Hills town. An Artery that fed the town of Volland, Kansas eventually severed as technology and time advanced.

In the late 1800s, Bill and Otto Kratzer established a store near the Rock Island Railroad Depot on the edge of Volland. Providing Volland with merchandise and Post services, the store quickly established itself as an essential piece of the town.

Cattle raising and farming has been the lifeline for many Kansas towns, and Volland was no exception. This enterprise was facilitated by the railroad, bringing cattle and other goods to and from the town. However, as the railway faded, so did the farmers livelihood.

Located near Alma, Volland was born with a population of 26 residents in 1910. After the Volland store was established, the population raised to roughly 400. Though the population fell drastically after the store closed, a spirit of revitalization runs through the town today.

With the increasing possibility of the Kratzer family selling the store for the bricks; Otto Kratzer’s granddaughter began to look for someone who would buy the Store and restore it. With the promise that the building wouldn’t be torn down, an agreement was reached, and the property passed to new owners, the Reece’s.

In June 2015, The Volland Store reopened its doors and returned to its rightful place in the community. With events hosted and organized all through the year, the Store quickly became a center piece of the community again.

The Reece’s continue to bring life back to the Volland community through the Volland store and are now expanding the blueprints of Volland. With the help of El Dorado and the Design+Make Studio; the Reece’s vision for the community has begun to grow, and the potential for the next steps in the project are beginning to take shape in the surrounding houses and landscape.

ROAD NETWORK Old K-10 was the major thoroughfare to and from Volland. As it sits today, the road is scarcely used but still brings community members, artists, and visitors to Volland.

RAILROAD Once the lifeline of the town, the railroad is still active, reminding the town of its importance through its distinct horn that echoes through Volland.

THE HOUSES Though they sit empty today, the houses are an integral piece of Volland’s fabric and history. They posses great potential in rejuvenating the town.

TUNING INTO VOLLAND

LIGHT EXPERIMENT GOAL

Use lighting to help artists and locals to see Volland in a controlled environment. By using a search light and attracting nearby populations, we will draw users to the site. Upon arrival, we selectively highlight important attributes of Volland at night by using a series of controlled spot lights. We intend to carefully document the entire process, to further inspire future artists as to what Volland has to offer.

T H E R E J U V E N AT I O N GOALS

The Burning is a symbolic gesture marking a new chapter in Volland’s history, much like the prairie burns seen throughout Kansas. These revelations through fire are emblematic of rejuvenation and new beginnings. Fire has brought people together for centuries, it is an event where stories are told and relationships are established. This event provides a great opportunity to integrate with Volland and the chance to become a part of its community. Volland carries a rich history, one that has seen the effects of time. Through the process of cleansing the Volland landscape, we set the grounds for the re-invigoration that the town deserves.

A SIGNAL GOAL

The signal represents Volland’s identity as historical place and evolving art community. Its location will activate Volland’s presence, draw people into the heart of the community, and establish one cohesive entry.

BRINGING LIFE BACK.

PHASE 1 - VOLLAND STORE

TODAY

The renovation of The Volland Store saved as much of the Kratzer brothers’ original structure as possible, and the Store is reclaiming its role as a center of community life where news and ideas are exchanged, and a place where descendants of homesteaders and visitors from Anywhere, USA, stage meetings, reunions, workshops and weddings, art exhibits, musical performances, and equestrian events. Facilities

REQUIREMENTS

ACOUSTICS

-Noise is unwanted sound that interferes with the function of a given space. Noise is subjective because what is disturbing and unacceptable to one room application, may be acceptable to another. -A major source of noise in Volland is the rail road. -Each artist is unique in either enjoying the bustle of sounds or the silence of solitude.

THERMAL COMFORT

- Kansas has a wide range in temperature. This wide range can make it difficult for residences to maintain a comfortable temperature from the cool winters to the hot and humid summers. - An HVAC system is necessary to combat the intense temperature fluctuation. - In the more moderate seasons of fall and spring, natural ventilation would be a great asset and provide a natural means to control comfort in the houses.

Design Make 2017

GOOD LIGHTING:

- Light from the northern faรงade is more suitable for artists. - North light is less direct and reduces glare while artists are working with his or her medium. - Natural light is also more comfortable than harsh artificial light.
