Theperception,formation,andrepresentationofarchitecturalspaces happenintheshadows,throughlayersoflightanddark.Lightand shadowssculptarchitecturalenvironments.Thisseminarlooksintothis phenomenonexploringtheopportunitiesforshadesofdarknessto impactarchitecturalexperienceandspatialperception.Wewill incorporateexamplesfromarchitecturalrepresentation,storytelling, anddiscussionsaroundtheperceptionofspaceandatmospheres.The coursecontainslectures,videos,readingandwritingassignmentswith in-classdiscussions,aswellassitevisitobservationsinStockholm museums.Hands-onexplorationisencouragedtocomplementthe theoreticalcontent.

Duringthecourseyouwilldeepenyourunderstandingandknowhowofbasic designstrategiestoenhanceyourArchitecturethroughmoreknowledge aboutsustainability.Wewillprovideyouwithanintroductiontoarchitectural technologyandtherecentinternationalandlocalenvironmentalagendas throughaseriesofkeynotionseminars:LocalSetting,Globalimpact,Climate comfort,SpatialstructureandMaterialuseofenvelopes.Investigative seminarsandimplementationreviewseminarsareintertwinedinawaywhich structuresyourworkingprocess.Wewillstudyaselectionofpioneering, prototypicalanddogmaticprojectsmainlyintheNorth,allofwhichillustrate anddemonstratetheconceptofthinkingeco-tectonic.Itwillbepresented bothasasmallIRLexhibitionandasadocumentationinadigitalformat

Whatisoftendefinedasthepostmodernturninarchitecturecoincides withtheintroductionofthecomputerdrawing.Inthe1980-s architecturaldrawingturnedfromanoccupationwithshadowandline tooneofpixelandcolor.Ononelevelthecomputerandthenew renderedimageweretofundamentallytransformthearchitectural professionfromoneofbuilding-makingtoimage-making.Onanother level,itstartedanewunprecedentedobsessionwithhand-drawingas thearchitect’sprimarytoolofexpressionandself-promotion.

Thisseminarcoursepresentsabeginnersguidetowalking—thatslow, yetreliableformofbipedalmotionthathasservedourspecieswell.It maynotbethefastestwayofgettingfromAtoB,butforthoseinno rush,itoffersanexceptionalviewofthespacesin-between.This coursewillexplorethehistory,theory,andpracticeofwalkingasa methodofartisticresearch,throughaseriesoflectures,talksand seminars.Paralleltothis,wewillundertakeseveralexploratorywalksin andaroundStockholm—throughknownandunchartedterritories, urbanvillagesandruralhinterlands,manicuredgardensandextractive landscapes. Studentsareencouragedtomixcollaborationswithindividualworkinthe formatofanessay,reportage,orafilm.
Thearchitecturalcompositionisanacttoorganizeanddefineborders thatarticulatespatialrelations.Ininteractionwithnaturalconditionsthe spatialexperienceisanarticulationbetweentimeandmotionwhichcan betracedasconsciousandunconsciousactions.Theroleofthearchitect istoorganizeandarticulatetheseconditionswhilecomposingthespatial setting.Thecombinationofmassandvoidexperiencedbyourown physiologicalandpsychologicalstategivedifferentspatialphenomena thatdefineanysite.Thisseminarserieswillfocusonhowtosortoutand orderdifferentspatialcharacterstomakethempartofalanguagewhich cangeneratenewspatialcompositions.Thepurposeistoapproach usefulcompositionalstrategiesinthecreationofarchitecturalwork.

Concreteisacompositematerial,anditspropertiesdependon thetypeandproportioningoftheconstituentingredients.Atits mostbasicitconsistsofthreeessentialingredients:cement, water,andaggregate.However,itsmaterialityandfunctionaland structuralperformancecanbegreatlyvariedthroughtheaddition ofadditivesanddifferentproductiontechniques.Itisessentiallya “programmable”stone.Thecourseexploresthegreatdiversityof thisubiquitousmaterialthroughrecipesandtechniquesof concretecasting.Thisisprimarilyapracticalcourse,soexpectto getyourhandsdirty.
