CARVING AVENUES MARKET ON THE AVE LOCATION : FITZGERALD, DETROIT DURATION : 16 WEEKS TEAM : JON-AN MCNEIL The Market on the Ave becomes a mixeduse building, with commercial on the bottom level and housing for single mother students. Situated between University of Detroit Mercy and the Fitzgerald neighborhood, the Market on the Ave acts as a destination and a connection between the campus and the Fitzgerald Greenway. Through the blending of indoor and outdoor space and the implementation of sustainable strategies, including daylighting, cross ventilation, and rainwater collection, a healthy environment is created for the residents and the visitors. The multiple community spaces allow for interaction and relationships within and around the building as well.

As a sustainability strategy and aestheic, the skin is the most important feature of the building. The vertical louvers can be manipulated to block glare and the weather along the exterior corridors of the building. In the summer, the windows can be open to provide ventilation and closed in the summer.

EMERGING RELATIONS ROMAN THEATRE
LOCATION : VOLTERRA, ITALY DURATION : 10 DAYS TEAM : JUSTYNA BUCZKOWSKA + MARIE ARRINGTON + MICHAEL ADENIYI The Roman Theatre is a site in Volterra that is often overlooked. The main problem is that the theatre is very visible to those walking by and the option to tour it does not create much of a different experience other than providing a slightly closer look. By creating a museum that provides information on the ruins and other sites while also allowing for visitors to interact with the ruins, the theater will gain more awarness and popularity for both tourists as well as locals.

CIRCULATING THE RUINS 21
CONNECTED GREENSPACE PROSPECT HILL MASTER PLAN LOCATION : PROSPECT HILL, CINCINNATI DURATION : 2 WEEKS TEAM : ERICA BUFFAM + KYLENE DUPUIS Liberty Street divides the neighborhoods of Prospect Hill and Pendleton. To promote business and pedestrian traffic to the highly residential area, we implemented three strategies: bridge the two communities, create greenspaces, and erect an urban streetfront with a cultural center as a center point. All the greenspaces are linked and circulate the area to encourage walkability. To bridge the gap in elevation, the pedestrian pass tunnel beneath liberty street and leads to stairs. The cultural center also contains a bridge that spans across the road.

The library contains a market and workshop to promote more commerce in the, almost strictly, residential area.

The library bridges across the span of the hill, with three access points. On the lowest level of the hill rests a greenhouse to tend to plants for sale on the bridge. On Liberty Street, one enters into the reading tower. Finally, on the top of the hill, residents of Prospect Hill enter on the level market. The market stall’s counters wrap around, drawing people inside to the special collections.

The floor of the special collections opens to the workshop beneath. The market connects to the workshop through floor 2.5, as a passage from consumer to producer, and vice versa. The children’s area lies underneath it all, with glass ceilings were the workshop lies, so that the production is visible. The reading tower is the main body of the adult section. The floor continuously spirals upwards. In the children’s area, the bookshelves are interactive, allowing kids to climb and sit on them. There are moments when the ceiling opens up and light filters into the space.

OVERLAYED FUNCTIONS NATIONAL THEATRE
LOCATION : DOWNTOWN, DETROIT DURATION : 16 WEEKS In the midst of a rising culinary capital, the National Theatre is adapted as a culinary school with a student-run restaurant while maintaining its former prestige. The openness of the space allows for relationships to be created between the different functions and areas. An open kitchen and the multiple balconies create the perfect platforms to see and be seen.

FLUID TRANSITIONS BEAUTY SCHOOL
LOCATION : OLD REDFORD, DETROIT DURATION : 3 WEEKS The beauty school is the result of a study on transformation and movement. It is not simply one action, but a flurry of activity that envelops the clients. By overlapping circles and outlining different forms, the spaces flow into each other to increase efficiency for the students. The layout creates a transitional experience for both the clients as well as the students.

UNDULATING WAVES DANCE HALL
LOCATION : PALMER PARK, DETROIT DURATION : 8 WEEKS Music drives the design of the dance hall. There is a fluidity in dance that drives the atmosphere and aesthetic of the building. The bowing wall panels represent the progression of a song or the steps of a song, while creating shadows that enhance the space. The drapes along the ceiling sway with the music creating the illusion that the dance hall is dancing along with the rest of the inhabitants. The frosted glass creates an inviting glow to the outside.

DESIGN 139
EVENT SIGNAGE + PUBLICATION Detroit Design 139 is an exhibition and competition that was held in September 2017. The exhibition was held again on April 30, 2018 for a week. My task involved creating signage for the event. In addition to the event, a publication featuring all the projects was designed. My task was to take the design boards from the exhibition and lay them out. I also created infographics using data from the original exhibition and a timeline of the events held and articles featuring Detroit Design 139.
