LOCATION : BAGLEY, DETROIT DURATION : 16 WEEKS TEAM :
TATYANA MOURAD
To connect residents to each other and the larger community, the housing complex incorporates transportation, social spaces, and nature. This senior housing complex seeks to create a sense of purpose and belonging for residents. Within the facility, there are community spaces, large and small, for social interaction among residents and to add variety and wayfinding to their new homes.

CARVING AVENUES MARKET ON THE AVE
LOCATION : FITZGERALD, DETROIT DURATION : 16 WEEKS TEAM :
JON-AN MCNEIL
The Market on the Ave becomes a mixed-use building, with commercial on the bottom level and housing for single mother students. Situated between the University of Detroit Mercy and the Fitzgerald neighborhood, the Market on the Ave acts as a destination and a connection between the campus and the Fitzgerald Greenway. Through the blending of indoor and outdoor space and the implementation of sustainable strategies, including daylighting, cross ventilation, and rainwater collection, a healthy environment is created for the residents and the visitors. The multiple community spaces allow for interaction and relationships within and around the building as well. 16

Acting as a sustainability strategy and aestheic, the skin is the most important feature of the building. The vertical louvers along the exterior corridors can be manipulated to block glare and the weather. In the summer, the windows can be opened to provide ventilation and closed in the winter.

LOCATION : DOWNTOWN, DETROIT DURATION : 16 WEEKS In the midst of a rising culinary capital, the historic National Theatre is adapted as a culinary school with a student-run restaurant while maintaining its former prestige. The openness of the space allows for relationships to be created between the different functions and areas. An open kitchen and the multiple balconies create the perfect platforms to see and be seen.

DETROIT COLLABORATIVE DESIGN CENTER SEPT - DEC 2019
Working in a community development firm I was able to understand the process of working with the neighborhood and the sensitivity needed when addressing particular issues. I worked on multiple tasks that included gathering context, data mapping, and attending and preparing materials for community meetings.
32
PROJECT :
BRIGHTMOOR PLAYSCAPE RENDERING
From an existing photomerged perspective, I configured the playscape, users and potential vegetation.

I assembled collages from photos of the streetscapes within the neighborhood. I also overlayed sketches to suggest what the neighborhood could look like. For community meetings, I prepared boards and took notes.

MAY - AUG 2019 Working in an architecture firm, I delved heavily into the conceptual and schematic design process and touched on construction documents. The ability to attend client and consultation meetings helped me to understand how to balance the needs of multiple entities. Many of my tasks included preparing diagrams and presentations for clients. The internship also included a separate research project for me and the other intern to work on every Friday.

Working in a real estate firm, I gained insight on all of the data and information needed to make a case for potential projects and for leasing to tenants. Having been my first internship, I learned a lot about time management and working with a project team. A majority of my work involved graphic design, preparing diagrams, and some schematic design.

present moment. Similar to the celebratory historic preservation approach showcased in the Adaptive Reuse projects, Detroit’s future design legacy will be established with these New Construction projects displayed within the exhibit. These exciting New Construction projects represent Detroit’s future as a leader in worldclass design excellence – that is already under construction today.

In addition to the event, a publication featuring all the projects was designed. My task was to help design project spreads from boards in the exhibition. I also created infographics using data from the original exhibition and a timeline of the events held and articles featuring Detroit Design 139. None of the pictures, renderings, or words are my own.

KIYONE TUAZON BIO
I am a graduating Master’s of Architecture student at the University of Detroit Mercy. I attended UDM because, having grown up in Troy, I wanted to be closer to the city. The past five years, I’ve begun to discover Detroit and develop a love for cities. To me, architecture is meant to be a collaboration between physical design, people, and environment. Architecture is not just the vision we create, but a means of support for the community that coexists with the surrounding context. Throughout my education and experience within the field of architecture, I’ve become particularly interested in historic preservation, adaptive reuse, community development, and sustainability. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling to experience different cultures, reading whenever I can find the time, and anything involving food. 48

STUDY ABROAD VOLTERRA, ITALY
In the summer of my third year, I was grateful to be given the opportunity to study abroad in Volterra, Italy. Being completely emersed in a foreign place really opened my eyes to other cultures and experiences. Practically every weekend was spent in a different city and country as I made the most out of my trip to Europe. Since study abroad, I’ve really grown as a person, becoming more independent and confident in myself. Today, I’m waiting for the chance to return or explore some other continents as well. In the meantime, I’m making my way around the United States.
