The Baltic Seaside Resort Ostseebad Kühlungsborn is located on the coast of the Bay of Mecklenburg Vorpommern about halfway between the Hanseatic towns Rostock and Wismar. The communities of Brunshaupten, Arendsee and Fulgen merged in 1938 and Kühlungsborn was built. Since 1996, Ostseebad Kühlungsborn may wear the name „Baltic Seaside Resort“. Kühlungsborn consists of two city centers: Kühlungsborn West (formerly Arendsee) and Kühlungsborn East (formerly Brunshaupten). The 133-hectare forest is located in the middle.

Some people regard Kühlungsborn as a home from home; others as an insider's tip – and for locals it simply IS their home. Kühlungsborn's inhabitants are proud of “their” Baltic resort. And with good reason. No other location on the German Baltic coast welcomes as many visitors or hosts as many overnight stays as this small town nestled between the Kühlung ridge and the sea. Is it down to nature, to 2
the town's diversity and atmosphere, or to the people and their character? Or is it simply a combination of all of these? We don't know. And that's not a bad thing either. If you want a view of the sea or a sky full of stars, if you love trying new things or prefer what's familiar: Kühlungsborn is varied, special, and always different. But above all: real. >>

All of this is Kühlungsborn
An average of 280 days of sunshine per year
Nature as far as the eye can see
If the current German travel statistics are true, German holidaymakers like nothing better than to “relax”, “do something for myself and my health”, “spend time with the family”, “enjoy some sun” and “actively experience nature”. Well, not that we rely totally on statistics, but we all like to confirm popular clichés. Especially when the conditions are right. Boasting more than 280 days of sunshine per year, Kühlungsborn is on the sunny side of life. And the green jewel by the sea also offers ideal conditions all year round for visitors wanting to do themselves and their health some good. Surrounded by nature. With a forest in its centre. To the north a six-kilometre

beach; to the south the Kühlung hills: a ridge that keeps rain from passing over the town. On top of this a marina and a promenade, where the comings and goings of the boats and yachts can be watched. All part of the town's recipe for success, guaranteeing a healthy climate and special ambiance. À propos ambiance: this is best appreciated by taking a stroll along the four-kilometre long beach promenade. Here too, there is green as far as the eye can see. A narrow strip of trees provides the promenade and its unobstructed sea views with a soothing shield from the hubbub of the boulevard, where hotels, restaurants and elegant boutiques in renovated Baltic spa villas are closely strung together. Small alcoves. Playful turrets. Façades that tell story after story. Tradition encountering the modern era. Just as you, on the inside, encounter warmth and hospitality. What would Kühlungsborn be without the people who shape it every day? Who do things that nobody does elsewhere, or the same things but differently. People who know everything in Kühlungsborn, and probably each grain of sand. Characters who are like a Baltic wave in force eight winds: big, loud and powerful but welcoming. It's the movers and shakers, who manage their hotels and holiday apartments

with vision and ambition, breathe new life into restaurants and produce a range of leisure activities, who have scarcity value. Sometimes individual, sometimes special, often different yet ordinary too. This could be a description of Kühlungsborn – and the resort's culinary diversity is no exception in this respect. Whether you opt for Matjesbrötchen (herring fillets and onion in a bread roll), curried
sausage and champagne, traditional fried potatoes in the oldest bar in town, or a 12-course menu in a gourmet restaurant, you'll find creativity and oodles of regional flavour at every turn. And always served up with lashings of warmth and hospitality 365 days a year. For contrary to popular assumption, Kühlungsborn is open all year round and is actually at its best during the winter season. This is when the Baltic sea is showcased in all its beauty and breathes fresh air behind shop fronts and into businesses. Breathe deeply and do something good for your body and soul. Easily said and just as easily done. For you're in good hands right from the start at any of the resort's many wellness and health specialists. If you want to rely on Mother Nature entirely, then you can golf, hike, cycle, sail or jog yourself fit and healthy. And the bracing sea air will give you an added boost.
“Kühlungsborn is at its best during the winter season. The Baltic sea is showcased in all its beauty.”
Try it for yourself! But you won't be able to cram all that into a single holiday. So you'll have to keep on coming back again. But then you'll want to do that anyway … and you have to start sometime. (mhu) In good hands: let yourself be pampered by our specialists 5

Kühlungsborn marina reaches for the stars Particularly on clear nights, looking out over the sea. But as of 2014, the stars are also for its facilities and services, as there are now four out of a possible five stars twinkling above the entrance to the Harbourmaster’s House. Kühlungsborn’s marina has been inspected and assessed by the IMCI and fulfils all the criteria for a four-star certification. To achieve this, various investments and improvements had to be made to bring safety levels and services in line with international standards. As a result, the sea-facing side of the harbour entrance was given an illuminated nameplate, the mooring pier was equipped with additional rescue ladders, and a large number of new show cases were set up with their contents likewise adapted to international standards. What’s cooking in Kühlungsborn?
A chill wind delivers tasty treats The days are shorter and the air fresher. And with this comes more appetite. For when all's said and done, eating keeps body and soul together. Our well laden tables won't fail to disappoint, as Kühlungsborn's chefs have specialised in regional cuisine for years and perform at their best during the cold winter months. Why? “Because as a cook, you have the whole year's harvest behind you, together with fresh fish from the Baltic, mushrooms and wild field produce, game and water fowl, winter vegetables, pickled, dried and storable products, and are faced with a period, in which our guests show increased interest to culinary matters”, explained professional chef Tillmann Hahn. So visitors can look forward to a rich variety of menus packed with delicious local treats, and plenty of entertainment value guaranteed.
DID YOU KNOW? That there are over 100 restaurants (without hotel restaurant) in Kühlungsborn.

What’s cooking in Kühlungsborn?
Gourmet days by the Baltic sea “What’s cooking in Kühlungsborn?” This new slogan marks the transformation of the Baltic resort into a gourmet’s paradise this November. The participants in Kühlungsborn’s food festival have once again cooked up a host of treats for visitors, with culinary workshops, tasting sessions and a menu created from scratch from a fixed list of ingredients.
Whilst the stormy Baltic waves beat against the shore outside, various themed evening events will take guests on a culinary journey.
up a storm, and enjoy a 12-course buffet to boot. Visitors will have to cut short their weekend strolls along the beach at
The 4-course gourmet menu was already a big hit in previous years and this year, the fixed ingredients list brings an added twist. Each cookery team must incorporate the items specified into their menus. Whether the ingredients end up in the sauce or the dessert is a matter for their own creativity! And of course the popular Kitchen Party, featuring a communal cooking and tasting session, is another firm fixture. Amateur chefs can peer over the professionals’ shoulders (and into their pots) as they cook
Kühlungsborn in November, as it would be too much of a shame to miss out on the workshops and tasting sessions.
Look the chefs over the shoulder and be surprised.

Biker´s Dream Junior All 12 – 17 year olds can go biking on the Kühlung ridge as part of an active biking tour. It’s a great way to let off steam and have a totally ‘parent-free’ day. The tour begins at the DRAHTESEL bicycle hire depot at Dünenstraße 5, always accompanied by an experienced biking guide, of course. The destination of the tour is the Kühlung: a ridge that is 4 to 5 kilometres wide and over 100 m high in places. It’s the perfect spot for kids to let rip and have some fun. There’s no stopping for muddy holes and puddles. Once everybody’s worked off all their energy, the tour moves on to the Nasse Ecke restaurant and boarding house in Wittenbeck for some refreshments, where Joschi and Petra are waiting to serve up a meal. After refuelling and having a brief rest, it’s onwards to the coastal cliffs. And if the weather is favourable, there is the opportunity for a brief dip in the sea before the group returns to Kühlungsborn. dizzling heights Step on the gas & free fall Cycling and surfing are the perfect sports for a holiday on the Baltic coast. But have you ever done that 10 metres up in the air? If you’re up for the challenge, why not head down to the high ropes adventure course at Kletterwald Kühlungsborn and take to the trees on a (well secured) bike? If this doesn’t provide enough of a kick, then you can always tackle the Tarzan Jump, the Base Jump from a height of ten metres or Germany’s longest forest zip wire, measuring a cool 103 metres. The forest adventure park offers a total of seven different courses, with specially trained instructors on hand to ensure safety. In addition, climbers are always doubly secured via a robust safety harness with spring hooks and ropes. So all you need to do is put on comfortable clothes and sturdy footwear and head on down for some treetop fun! (eti) contact information:

The Offroad Park also offers guided enduro and quad tours for visitors who would prefer to explore the local area. The tours cost €99.00 per person and last two hours. This summer, there is a professional children’s entertainment team for all children once again, ensuring that the kids have plenty of fun. Child-oriented entertainment programmes are offered at alternating venues from Sunday to Friday. The morning sessions are aimed at all children between the ages of 4 and 7, and the afternoon sessions are for
kids aged 8 and above. So the younger children might have a pirate day or bear hunt to look forward to, for example, whereas the afternoon’s entertainment for older children could include a QR code rally or a beach competition. Boredom? No such thing here.

Sports beaches Sun, sand, sports and fresh sea air. This is what all our sports beaches in Kühlungsborn have in common. The beach volleyball association and the Ostseefitness studio are again offering an exciting sports programme, as the resort’s fine, sandy sports beaches are once more transformed into unique fitness studios during the summer months. In Kühlungsborn’s western district, the emphasis is very much on strength training, with benches and weights provided to test your strength and a variable programme to help you quickly offset any holiday weight gain. The Active Fun beach is located between the pier and the marina, in Kühlungsborn’s eastern district, and as the name suggests, this is where the fun and action takes place. The beach has four beach volleyball courts and a multi-purpose area, where a variety of beach volleyball-type sports can be played and alternating tournaments staged. Team spirit is required. The tournaments are staged in the different disciplines. The eclectic programme spans beach volleyball, beach soccer and beach handball. There’s even something for the resort’s smaller guests, with special activities such as soccer school or children’s Olympics offering additional fun. The games and sporting activities are led by qualified trainers, who professionally assist all participants. Both beaches can also be used for individually organised games or training sessions, and are available to guests and locals alike free of charge at all times. (eti)

Winter ramble by the baltic sea Peace, wide expanses and the feeling that you have the whole beach to yourself. All part of the joys of a winter holiday on the Baltic coast. But have you ever thought of an active holiday by the seaside at this time of year?
18
There are countless ways of exploring Kühlungsborn and its surroundings by foot and discovering undreamed-of vistas – for example by taking a guided winter walk. Local hiking guides Birgit Grote and Günter Lützow conduct nature ram-
bles in and around Kühlungsborn several times a week. Once you’ve wrapped up in a warm coat, scarf and hat you’re ready to set off on one of the many tours, which offer plenty of opportunities to take some stunning nature photos. >>
And have you ever seen Kühlungsborn when the sea covers the sand and goes right up to the dunes? This and many other natural spectacles can only be seen in winter on the Baltic coast. You can take more than 25 different routes to visit a host of interesting places and sights in and around Kühlungsborn. The routes vary in length and duration,
meaning that all preferences and fitness levels are catered for. There are hikes, for example, to Heiligendamm, Wittenbeck via the E9 E-Path towards Rerik, to the Dietrichshagener Berg peak, to the lighthouse at Bastorf, up onto the Kühlung ridge or to the Kohnstein in Wichmannsdorf wood. And wherever you go, you’ll be breathing
in plenty of healthy, oxygen-rich air. Baltic spa trio – a special concept from “Upstalsboom Hotelresidenz”
22
“Our guests want to experience the Baltic sea, the sand between their toes, the salt on their lips”, commented Anja Raschke. Anja is a sports scientist and spa manager at the four-star Upstalsboom Hotelresidenz & SPA hotel, and has a clear idea of what her guests find important. The hotel has a brand-new thalasso concept: a Baltic spa trio of wellness, nutrition and fitness. “We want to give our guests a piece of the sea to take home with them”, she explained. In the 1,300 m² Baltic spa, visitors can be massaged with amber, enjoy vegan meals in the restaurant, and breathe in the salty sea air during a yoga or pilates session on the beach. “After an amber massage,” Anja added “our guests even receive a small piece of amber to take back home with them”. Other natural products beside amber (or ‘gold of the Baltic sea’ as it is known) also play a part, so you can pamper yourself with a range of seaweed, mussel extract, salt and sea salt
treatments too. At the Four Seasons hotel, you can take a break from everyday life and let your senses roam free as you enjoy a Hawaiian temple massage accompanied by the sounds of the South Seas, or a Turkish bath with foam lather. Sauna enthusiasts won’t want to miss out on the popular Sauna Night, which takes place every Friday and includes a glass of sparkling wine for each guest. “We offer five different sauna baths, a full-body peel and a face pack”, said the hotel’s spa manager Sabrina Meier. On top of this fruit, alcohol-free punch, water and small nibbles are provided. The Sauna Nights also have special themes, for example ‘Winter Magic’ or ‘Caribbean Night’. “We are the only venue to offer this in Kühlungsborn. The atmosphere here is fantastic”, she enthused. The hotel also offers a range of wellness packages to match the various seasons. The “Golden Autumn” package, for example, includes a Chardonnay peel and

poultice in a swing chair and a relaxing full-body aromatic oil massage with sea buckthorn oil to fortify your immune system. This is followed by an invigorating and regenerating vitamin facial treatment. The “Winter Moon” package on the other hand contains such sensual delights as a chocolate cream bath, and a coffee peel to stimulate your metabo lism. There is also a massage with hot, aromatic chocolate.
“Our guests want to experience the Baltic sea, the sand between their toes, the salt on their lips.“ “The special thing that we offer, is that we work with substances that are produced naturally by the body. For example sugar, Hyaluron, salts and oxygen”, remarked Steffi Jankowski, spa manager at the Am Weststrand apartment complex. Cupping therapy is new to the wellness oasis. “This ancient therapeutic technique helps relieve tension, back ache, a hardening of the muscles, and also mobilises blood flow”, explained the state-certified beautician and body sugaring trainer. Sugar has been used for massages and hair removal for thousands of years. As part of an Arabian sugar massage, you can enjoy the aroma of middle eastern coffee on your skin. The caffeine has an energising, mood-lifting effect. Watersports take main billing at the Am Weststrand complex.
“We have 17 watersports groups, who work off energy and keep themselves fit doing aqua gymnastics or aqua-cycling”, stated Steffi Jankowski. “Some of our most popular treatments in the winter are the Rasul bath – a Turkish steam bath – heat treatments and bathing therapies”, said Marcel Nowak, physiotherapist at the Travel Charme Ostseehotel. In the hotel’s private suite, couples can enjoy a pampering session completely undisturbed. Relax in a romantic, rose-blossom bath together with a glass of Prosecco or champagne and exotic fruit, before indulging in a soothing full-body massage. “Our romantic treatments for couples are a big hit”, commented Marcel Nowak. The Travel Charme Ostseehotel is also the only hotel in Kühlungsborn with a heated outdoor pool.
Enjoy treatments such as “Golden Autumn” and “Winter Moon” in the Four Seasons Hotel
“We work with honey a lot”, commented Stefanie Schöchert, beautician and massage therapist at the four-star Ringhotel Strandblick hotel. Apparently, natural cosmetics are particularly gentle on the skin. Just like Rügener Heilkreide: a healing chalk from the island of Rügen which is used as a purifying and cleansing compress. Hay body wraps followed by a back massage are also very popular. “It is beautifully fragrant, stimulates blood flow and prepares the skin perfectly for the massage”. Do you like the idea of a pampering session with precious stones? Then you should book yourself in with Yvonne Puskeiler at the Villa Astoria, which offers aromatic massages featuring precious stones such as crystallized quartz and rose quartz. The soothing massage is designed to bring mind, body and spirit into harmony and to activate your powers of self healing. A Tao-Zi herbal pouch massage nurtures your skin and is bliss for the senses. The herbal pouches are individually filled with herbs and spices and heated in almond oil. Let this Asian massage transport you to another world as you enjoy the warmth and fragrance on your skin. THAT PURE SUMMER FEELING: REVIEW OF SEA&SAND 2014
That pure summer feeling: Review of Sea&Sand 2014 interview with blank&jones
28
They are two of the best-known DJs and have sold three million records worldwide: blank&jones. The duo – Piet Blank (43) and Jasper Jones (46) – are very picky about the venues they play in. And although they have scaled down their appear ances somewhat, they continue to play at the Sea&Sand festival in Kühlungsborn in the summer. The pair have just brought out their latest CD: “Relax 8”. And they have a few more surprises in store for this year. We asked the duo from Cologne why they enjoyed playing at the Sea&Sand festival so much and how they had managed to have such a long, joint career in the music industry.
THAT PURE SUMMER FEELING: REVIEW OF SEA&SAND 2014
THIS YEAR WAS YOUR SECOND TIME AT THE SEA&SAND FESTIVAL. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THE EVENT SO MUCH? Piet Blank: We’re extremely picky about where we DJ. In fact, we’ve hugely reduced the number of gigs we play in the last few years. We were simply won over by the concept – so we said to ourselves that we’d come down to Kühlungsborn and check it out. And we had a whale of a time last year! It might sound a bit strange, but we found it great from a ‘people’ point of view too. Which for us is at least as important as the location. We were really bowled over by the friendly atmosphere, and the beauty of the beach. Everything was just perfect. The sound was fantastic, the location, the whole shebang. And then that first year – on the very same night – we said to ourselves that if you did the festival again and asked us back, we’d definitely say yes. WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU STILL HAVE PLANNED FOR 2014? Jasper Jones: We brought out Edition 8 of our Relax series at the end of August and want to get started on some new “So80s” projects in the autumn. We also have one of two other surprises up our sleeves for this year.
very much to do with the public and the people who are putting on the party. There are clubs or discotheques like “Guvernment” in Toronto, which have an atmosphere that you won’t find any where else in the world. You can have a beautiful club but the party somehow falls flat – and vice versa you can be in a total dive, where someone has set up a fantastic system and gone to a lot of trouble, and you can have the party of your life. It really varies. WHERE DOES THE NAME BLANK&JONES COME FROM? Jasper Jones: That’s a very long story (the duo both laugh). In Piet’s case it was very simple as that’s his actual name: Piet Blank. When we were first starting to make music, British and American producers were more ‘happening’, and so to give the whole thing a bit more credibility and an international flavour I decided to pick an English pseudonym. We combined the two surnames to make blank&jones. And when we were once in America and I was using my real name of René Runge, we saw that blank&jones was a good decision.
WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A GOOD PIECE OF MUSIC? Jasper Jones: That’s actually quite simple, but always a matter of taste, of course. For us, it simply has to be touching, it has to move us in some way. It can trigger totally different emotions for us, we’re not committed to specific genres. It could be jazz, classical music, dance – really anything except for pop. But we don’t want to denigrate pop. We’re very relaxed about and it’s basically just a matter of taste. YOU LIVE IN COLOGNE, ALTHOUGH YOU’RE CONSTANTLY TRAVELLING ALL OVER THE WORLD. WHY COLOGNE IN PARTICULAR? Piet Blank: Cologne is our home. We did once go to America for quite some time. And although we flirted a bit with the idea of living in California, we consciously opted for Cologne. Cologne is not an oversized city. You know your local baker, but you can also travel around anonymously if you want. That’s very important to us. It’s our retreat, and we try to have as little contact with the media as possible, even in Cologne, because that means that we can move freely here. >>
YOU DO A LOT OF TRAVELLING. WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO RELAX AND TAKE A BREAK? Piet Blank: We’re totally open-minded about that. We each have own favourite destinations, of course. I normally like to go to France in summer, to the Atlantic coast. Jasper loves pottering around the Greek islands. But we would never say: just that and nothing else. The Baltic coast is a place that remains pretty much undiscovered for us, simply because of its distance. But the beach here is really great. WHERE DO YOU MOST LIKE TO PLAY AND WHY? Piet Blank: That’s really hard to say. It’s not just down to the location, but also

„Music … it simply has to be touching, it has to move us in some way.“
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT BEHIND YOUR DECKS OR IN THE RECORDING STUDIO? Jasper Jones: We’re actually quite boring in private. We enjoy the peace and quiet, and doing quite normal things with friends. We always used to be on the road at weekends and couldn’t really socialise, as most parties are at the weekend. So now it’s something quite special for us to be able to have a good time at the weekend with our friends, like normal people. And to do normal, everyday things with our families. And also, simply to sleep a lot. Piet Blank: The thing is, we have the huge luxury – for which we are grateful every single day – of being able to experience so much in our professional lives. We have the opportunity to see the whole world, and to see it in a way that you could probably never manage as a tourist. Because of this, we try to keep ourselves really grounded in our spare time.
DID YOU KNOW?
That Sea&Sand is a music event which was born as a school project in 2012. In 2013, committed entrepreneurs have joined forces with strong partners to implement Sea&Sand as a professional event.
30
WHAT ARE YOU PROUD OF, PROFESSIONALLY? Piet Blank: Receiving a gold disc is really special. And one time, we had our own truck at the Love Parade. Those were just things that were simply a lot of fun for us. It would be a dream if we could continue to live from the music that we make.
creative together for such a long period. Making music together is a pretty intimate process. We keep on pushing each other. And that’s the secret of our success, I think. The fact that we know each other very well, we know each other’s quirks and preferences, and we’re still good friends. That’s not something that you can take for granted. (ado)
WHERE DO YOU KNOW EACH OTHER FROM? Jasper Jones: We got to know each other in classic fashion, when DJ-ing. Piet was doing the Partyservice show on 1LIVE (radio station) at that time and I think that was the first show to be broadcast live from a club. He needed guest DJs, and invited me onto the show. Then we shot our mouths off and said: hey, why don’t we do a remix? And it just went from there, basically. Things just turned out that way, we didn’t have any master plan. But the fact that we’ve worked together for such a long time is fairly extraordinary. YOU’RE IN THE STUDIO TOGETHER AND DO JOINT GIGS. DON’T YOU SOMETIMES GET ON EACH OTHER’S NERVES? Piet Blank: Sure; we almost spend more time together than we do with our wives. But it’s just a question of knowing when to give the other person some space, and in that respect, I think we’re like an old married couple. Otherwise we never would have been able to be
