University of Kansas School of Law 2020 ANNUAL REPORT

TRANSFORMING TOGETHER

You helped us adapt. KU lawyers are trained to accept uncertainty. They examine issues from different perspectives, then craft balanced solutions. This year, that training has been vital to navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, KU Law has been able to carefully steward contributions and build a “rainy-day fund.” In March, it started raining. Our alumni and friends have helped us weather the storm. Your contributions allowed KU Law to increase scholarship funding, provide additional public interest stipends, launch new summer legal experiences, and create an emergency fund to benefit students. Those efforts would not have been possible without your support. I’m pleased to share this annual report for KU Law covering fiscal year 2020, which ended on June 30. It includes a complete list of law school donors and a few highlights of what their gifts make possible. It also details the changes KU Law has been able to make in response to the pandemic. Thank you for your continued support, which allows us to adapt to new challenges.

Stephen W. Mazza Dean and Professor of Law

You helped students reach their goals.

Scholarships have ensured that I do not have to worry about financial security. They have enabled me to focus on my professional development and participate in a variety of extracurricular activities. I am grateful to the donors for helping me obtain a diverse education at KU.” Peter Qiu | Hutchinson, Kansas | JD candidate, 2021

For many of us, pursuing a legal degree includes incurring massive debt. Law school simply would not have been possible for me without scholarships. I am grateful because they gave me the freedom to focus on a public interest career and participate in extracurricular experiences, such as Moot Court, at KU.” Austyn Caisse | Santa Cruz, California | JD candidate, 2021

I am incredibly grateful for the donors who made my scholarships possible. My scholarship allowed me to spend time building my leadership, researching and writing skills through invaluable extracurricular activities, like the Kansas Law Review.” Sarah Buchanan | Wichita, Kansas | JD candidate, 2021

You supported faculty teaching and research.

William R. Scott was a scholar who taught over 2,000 students during 32+ years on the KU faculty. For an alumnus to acknowledge his life’s work with this lasting gift is both incredibly generous and a testament to the tradition of excellence in both scholarship and teaching that we value so much at KU Law.” Uma Outka | Professor of Law, Associate Dean for Faculty William R. Scott Law Professor

KU Law is committed to quality hands-on learning that provides students with the skills necessary to be effective lawyers in an evolving legal landscape. I am grateful that the Connell Teaching Award supports our efforts to be effective teachers and mentors to our students.” Jean Phillips | Clinical Professor of Law Connell Teaching Professor of Law

The Centennial Teaching Professorship reflects KU Law’s deep commitment to teaching, which has never been more vital to our students than it has been this year. Every member of the faculty has gone above and beyond to reinvent our classes to the meet the challenges presented by the pandemic. I’m proud to be part of a faculty that cares so much about our teaching mission.” Laura Hines | Professor of Law Centennial Teaching Professor

You made KU Law’s perserverance possible. KU Law has focused its response to the coronavirus pandemic on supporting students. Those efforts have included suspending the school’s GPA requirement to maintain scholarships, resulting in an estimated $250,000 increase in scholarship allocations. Initially lifted in response to a change to the school’s grading policy this spring, the requirement will not be imposed until the end of spring 2021. The Career Services Office developed several programs designed to meet urgent legal needs, while also providing practical training for law students. They included a pop-up Advance Care Planning Clinic that prepared legal documents for essential workers in health care settings; numerous research assistant positions for faculty projects; and the new KU Law Legal Corps.

SUMMER STIPEND PROGRAM Through the support of the Bradley Family, the Bremyer Fund, the Richard L. & Suzanne Sedgwick Bond Fund, and the Public Interest Law Student Fund, KU Law offers stipends to help students offset the expenses incurred when they take legal positions that provide 240+ hours of work. In 2020, the school tripled the funding available from the program, increasing the number of students who were able to work with public interest organizations. More than 40 students took summer positions with government agencies, nonprofits and other organizations. Placements included the Kansas Court of Appeals, Kansas Supreme Court, Midwest Innocence Project, Legal Aid of Nebraska, Farmworker Legal Services, Legal Services of Eastern Missouri and the Office of the Colorado State Public Defender.

Katie Tepezano JD candidate, 2022 El Paso, Texas I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the financial assistance I received through the public interest law stipend. It allowed me to pursue an internship at a nonprofit immigration organization where I learned from experienced attorneys and helped indigent immigrants.”

Misbah Karamali JD candidate, 2021 Overland Park, Kansas I am beyond grateful for the summer stipend program. It allowed me and other students to pursue opportunities and experiences without having to worry about the financial burden of taking a public interest internship over the summer. I would not have been able to do my out-of-state internship without it and would not have gained the invaluable experience I did throughout my internship.”

Hunter Lindquist JD candidate, 2021 Brookville, Kansas Through the public interest law stipend, I was able to spend my summer in Denver representing low-income juveniles facing criminal charges. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, both personally and professionally, and I will remain forever grateful to have had the opportunity.”

You showed what Jayhawks can accomplish in one day. The law school was a part of KU’s third annual day of giving on Feb. 20, titled One Day. One KU. In 24 hours, 75 donors helped us raise $39,975 to support KU Law students. Since the giving day launched in 2018, donors have given more than $107,000 to support KU Law. As an institution, the University of Kansas raised more than $1.7 million during this year’s event for programs and initiatives across all campuses. Your contributions helped us provide scholarship opportunities for law students, making a legal education more attainable and less financially burdensome. You also supported initiatives including the Free Bar Prep Program and the new KU Law Student Emergency Fund.

The medallion, named for the law school’s first dean, recognizes those whose cumulative contributions to KU Law exceed $25,000. All 2020 honorees are listed below. While KU Law was not able to host its usual recognition ceremony for this year’s recipients, the law school remains grateful for their continued support.
