You helped us rise. KU lawyers solve problems, lead with integrity and serve their communities. The heights they reach in Green Hall and beyond are inextricably linked to your gifts and the resources they provide. Thanks to your generosity, KU Law students worry less about financial burdens and more about honing their advocacy or negotiation skills. They pursue unpaid internships at public interest organizations and respond to urgent community needs by providing free legal services. They learn from outstanding teachers and scholars whose research and innovation are bolstered by private giving. And so much more. I’m pleased to share this annual report for KU Law covering fiscal year 2018, which ended on June 30. You showed what Jayhawks can accomplish in one day. The law school participated in KU’s first day of giving on Feb. 20, titled One Day. One KU. In just 24 hours, 78 donors helped us raise nearly $23,000 to fund student scholarships, bar prep expenses and a facelift for Green Hall. Your support helped us power wash the building exterior, restoring it to its original 1978 luster. It also allowed us to cover bar exam prep costs for future Jayhawk lawyers, and attract the best and brightest students by providing an affordable, accessible legal education through scholarships. As an institution, the University of Kansas raised more than $730,000 and recorded a record number of gifts in a single day: 1,898.

You helped us meet community needs. More than 55 donors chipped in to Help Mobilize KU’s Legal Aid Clinic, raising $5,000 during a January 2018 crowdfunding campaign. “We are so grateful to everyone who donated and shared our campaign with friends and family,” said Clinic Director Melanie DeRousse. “We couldn’t have done it without you. We are now positioned to pivot quickly to offer legal help when our community needs it most.” Legal problems have no regard for deadlines or convenience, and KU Law’s Legal Aid Clinic is ready to mobilize. It can assemble its army of student volunteers at a moment’s notice. The Legal Aid Clinic Mobilization Fund is for urgent or responsive legal projects to benefit the community. The fund will cover expenses to allow the Clinic to gear up, get the word out and respond swiftly to meet emergent community needs.
A CULTURE OF SERVICE Thirty-six KU Law students provided more than 3,370 hours of free legal services to the public during the 2017-2018 academic year — an average of 94 hours per student.
Your gifts added up. The law school honored recipients of the James Woods Green Medallion at a dinner on April 7 in Lawrence. The medallion, named for the law school’s first dean, recognizes those whose cumulative contributions to KU Law exceed $25,000.
