KU LAW University of Kansas School of Law 2023 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear alumni and friends, As we reflect on the achievements of the past fiscal year, it is with great pride that we acknowledge your unwavering support and dedication to the success of KU Law. And it has been a successful year. KU Law is now ranked among the Top 20 Public Law Schools in the nation by U.S. News. Generosity from loyal alumni and friends like you enables us to extend vital scholarships based on both merit and financial need, which helps open up the possibility of a law degree to numerous students and helps ensure that debt loads remain manageable. Because of your gifts to our scholarship funds, KU Law students have some of the lowest average student debt loads in the nation. Lowering the cost of a legal education through scholarship support also led to KU Law being ranked the No. 4 Best Value Law School in the nation by National Jurist. That ranking was also bolstered by high bar passage rates, due in large part to our innovative bar exam preparation program, which provides a free post-graduation bar prep course to all students. Your commitment also empowers our students to navigate challenges and seize opportunities, whether through unpaid internships at public interest organizations, addressing community needs with free legal services or pursuing their passions with a greater focus on skill development. In this annual report for fiscal year 2023, which concluded on June 30, we present a comprehensive list of law school donors and highlights of the transformative impact of your gifts. You may have heard that KU has kicked off a historic capital campaign entitled ‘Ever Onward.’ We hope that with your help, we can be an integral part of the university reaching its largest ever goal of raising $2.5 billion. If you would like to learn more about the law school’s priorities for the campaign, visit kueveronward.org or contact me directly. I would love to hear from you. Thank you for being a vital part of the KU Law community and for contributing to the success of future generations of Jayhawk lawyers.

Stephen W. Mazza Dean and Professor of Law

Elevating student achievement

As a KU Law Ambassador and scholarship recipient, I can truly say that scholarships are one of KU’s most powerful recruitment opportunities. Mine is the reason I came back to KU. Now, it minimizes my financial burden, allowing me to engage in diverse interest areas, leadership opportunities, career options and extracurricular activities. I am so thankful to the donors who make this experience possible for me and my fellow classmates.” Karen Campbell | Lawrence, KS | JD candidate, 2025

My scholarship has radically changed the trajectory of my academic and professional career. The Jayhawk full-tuition scholarship enabled me to attend KU Law to pursue public interest work. I spend less time worrying about paying tuition and more time on my classes and student organizations.” Corrine Yoder-Mulkey| Eudora, KS | JD candidate, 2025

Supporting faculty excellence

I am honored to be named the Karelitz Chair in Evidence Law. The generosity reflected in this chair allows me to continue KU Law’s tradition of excellence in producing practice-ready lawyers who serve their clients with competence, compassion and commitment.” Kyle Velte | Professor of Law, Associate Dean for Faculty Leon Karelitz Chair in Evidence Law

I am honored and grateful to have the support of the Edwin W. Hecker Teaching Fellowship. This support is especially meaningful to me because, as a KU Law alumna, I know firsthand that Professor Hecker was an impactful teacher and committed mentor to his students.” Pamela Keller | Clinical Professor of Law Edwin W. Hecker Teaching Fellow

Broadening educational possibilities In 2023, KU Law provided more than $62,000 in funding for summer public interest stipends. Through the support of the Bradley Family, the Bremyer Fund, the Richard L. & Suzanne Sedgwick Bond Fund, the Donald and Esther Atha Giffin Public Interest Law Fund, and the Public Interest Law Student Fund, KU Law offers stipends to help students offset the expenses incurred when they take legal positions that provide 240+ hours of public interest work.

The public interest law stipend was crucial to my success this summer with the Nashville District Attorney’s Office. This stipend gave me the opportunity to move out of state, find affordable housing and focus on my work helping victims of crimes across Nashville. The courtroom experience I gained with the District Attorney’s Office was invaluable, and I will take those skills with me as I move forward with my career after graduation.” Tyler Schembri | Foster City, CA | JD candidate, 2024

I am incredibly thankful I was able to receive funds from the public interest law stipend. With the stipend, I was able to intern at the National Immigration Justice Center in Chicago. This experience allowed me to gain a profound understanding of the immigration system and offer assistance to immigrants navigating legal hurdles. I came to law school with the goal of becoming an immigration attorney and thanks to the stipend, I was able to take the first step in accomplishing that dream.” Yuvia Serna | Carol Stream, IL | JD candidate, 2025

I was blessed to receive a public interest law stipend to support my summer internship at the Jackson County (MO) Prosecutor’s Office. While at Jackson County, I learned from skilled and dedicated advocates and was able to use skills I gained during my first year at KU Law to work for the people of Kansas City. I am grateful for donors who support students pursuing public interest legal work. ” Josh Lollar| Lawrence, KS | JD candidate, 2025
