BANG! REIZEND KUNSTENFESTIVAL In de loop van 2015 valt het doek over KultuurKaffee. Onze huidige locatie wordt dan afgebroken om twee jaar later plaats te ruimen voor een nieuwe, moderne infrastructuur. In tussentijd kiest KultuurKaffee voor een nomadische werking in de stad.

BANG! is een nieuw initiatief, een reizend kunstenfestival dat twee keer per seizoen wordt georganiseerd. Steeds wisselende gastcuratoren stellen voor ons een multidisciplinair programma samen dat wordt gepresenteerd op diverse Brusselse locaties.

CURATED BY TEUN VERBRUGGEN Voor de eerste editie nodigen we drummer TEUN VERBRUGGEN uit als curator.

Verbruggen is actief binnen uiteenlopende groepen en projecten, waaronder: Jef Neve Trio, Flat Earth Society, Chaos of the Haunted Spire, Othin Spake, Too Noisy Fish, … De persoonlijke stijl van Verbruggen kenmerkt zich door een grote openheid naar diverse genres, de wil om muzikale grenzen te doorbreken, de zoektocht naar nieuwe klanken en de drang naar vrijheid en improvisatie. Als muzikant is Verbruggen vaak actief op het grensgebied met andere disciplines en gaat hij regelmatig samenwerkingen aan met dansers, performers en beeldend kunstenaars.

Verbruggen stelde voor BANG! een multidisciplinair programma samen waarbij experiment, cross-over, improvisatie, dialoog en kruisbestuiving centraal staan. Naast presentatie van bestaande producties is er ruimte voor unieke voorstellingen en creatie. Dit gebeurt in de vorm van improvisaties, door creatieopdrachten te geven en door kunstenaars te selecteren die onder de noemer ‘carte blanche’ een eigen avond hosten. Naast gevestigde waarden is er ook ruimte voor jong talent.

BANG! TRAVELING ART FESTIVAL In the course of 2015 the curtain will drop on KultuurKaffee. Our current location will be demolished to make way for a completely new concert venue and gallery. In anticipation of the new building KultuurKaffee chooses to operate as a nomadic cultural organisation in the city. For two years KultuurKaffee will be a guest at different cultural places and venues in Brussels.

BANG! embodies a new traveling art festival that will be organized twice per season. Each time a different guest curator will compile a multidisciplinary program for KultuurKaffee, which will be presented at various locations in Brussels.

CURATED BY TEUN VERBRUGGEN We choose TEUN VERBRUGGEN as the curator of the first BANG! edition. Verbruggen is active in various groups and projects including: Jef Neve Trio, Flat Earth Society, Chaos or the Haunted Spire, Othin Spake, Too Noisy Fish, ... The personal style of Verbruggen is characterized by an openness to various genres, the will to break musical boundaries, his search for new sounds and the urge for freedom and improvisation. As a musician, Verbruggen is active on the borderline between different art disciplines and regularly collaborates with dancers, performers and visual artists.

Next to the presentation of already existing productions, the emphasis lies on the presentation and creation of unique performances, works or installations. These will appear under the form of improvisation, by giving creative assignments to selected artists or by addressing artists to host an evening under the heading: ‘carte blanche’. In addition to the presentation of established names, there is also room for young, emerging talent.

LOCATIES

Kultuurkaffee brengt BANG! op verschillende Brusselse locaties. Centrale plek van het programma is W-O-L-K-E, een intermediaire en onafhankelijke plek voor creatie, presentatie, discussie en uitwisseling. Deze plek omvat werkplaatsen voor architecten, ontwerpers, designers en beeldend kunstenaars. Op de elfde verdieping van hetzelfde gebouw zijn studio’s en expositie/performance/ontmoetingsruimten gehuisvest. W-O-L-K-E biedt het perfecte kader voor het multidisciplinaire programma van Teun Verbruggen. Daarnaast is KultuurKaffee ook te gast bij de op een boogscheut van W-O-L-K-E gelegen KVS, alsook bij RECYCLART.

LOCATIONS

BANG! takes place at various locations in Brussels. The beating heart of Verbruggen’s program is W-O-L-K-E. W-O-L-K-E is an intermediary space and offers an independent place for making, showing and discussing all kinds of exchanges. The place includes workshops for architects, designer and visual artists. On the eleventh floor of the building studios and exhibition/performance/meeting spaces are housed.

W-O-L-K-E provides the perfect framework for the multidisciplinary program of Teun Verbruggen. Additionally KultuurKaffee is a guest at KVS located within a stone’s throw of W-O-L-K-E, as well as in RECYCLART.

DUO À L’ENCRE is een performance waarbij Vincent Glowinski (Bonom) (schilderijen, tekeningen, marionetten) en Teun Verbruggen (drums, objecten) samen een muzikaal en visueel verhaal vertellen.

DUO À L’ENCRE is a performance of Vincent Glowinski (Bonom) and Teun Verbruggen in which paintings, drawings, puppets, drums and many different objects tell an audiovisual story.

LILLY JOEL (JOZEF DUMOULIN & LYNN CASSIERS)

LILLY JOEL bestaat uit Jozef Dumoulin (keyboards) en Lynn Cassiers (stem). Hun muziek vormt een op zichzelf staande entiteit, steeds paraat voor een slinger in een hybride wereld vol klankavontuur.

LILLY JOEL started off as a condensed duo-version of Jozef Dumoulin’s band Lidlboj. But little by little the music started taking its own path, and evolved towards a fully independent nucleus, taking off in a hybrid world of sound-adventure.

BRZZVLL speelt geïmproviseerde dansmuziek met een jazz-funk-fusion sound. Voor hun recente plaat ‘Engines’ werkten ze samen met dichter, schrijver, muzikant Anthony Joseph (UK). ‘Engines’ verenigt moeiteloos funk, grooves, afrobeat, woestijnfolk, jazz en vocals.

BRZZVLL plays improvised dance music with a jazz-funk-fusion sound. For their recent album ‘Engines’, the band teamed up with poet - writer - musician Anthony Joseph (UK).

‘Engines’ effortlessly unites funk grooves, afrobeat, desert folk, jazz and vocals.

LINUS maakt eenvoudige en melancholische composities waarbij het samensmelten van de twee instrumenten – akoestische bariton gitaar (Ruben Machtelinckx) en tenorsax (Thomas Jillings) – centraal staat. De muziek van Linus klinkt traag, slepend, spaarzaam en intimistisch.

LINUS - a duo existing of two composers/ improvisers- guides the listener into a bubble.

The intense sound of the tenor saxophone (Thomas Jillings) and the acoustic baritone guitar (Ruben Machtelinckx) takes the audience on a journey of simplicity, purity and longing.

BOLHAERD

BOLHAERD verenigt vier talenten uit de jongste free jazz generatie: Niels Van Heertum (euphonium), Viktor Perdieus (tenor sax), Laurens Smet (bass) en Jakob Warmenbol (drums).

Dynamische schakeringen en het spel met klankkleuren zorgen voor een indrukwekkende live ervaring.

BOLHAERD unites four young talents of the youngest free jazz generation: Niels Van Heertum (euphonium), Viktor Perdieus (tenor sax), Laurens Smet (bass) and Jakob Warmenbol (drums). Their creation of several dynamic musical layers and different timbres initiate an impressive live experience.

ERIC THIELEMANS & PETER JACQUEMYN

ERIC THIELEMANS is een verwoed zoeker op drums en percussie en absorbeert invloeden uit de jazz, improvisatie en hedendaagse muziek. Hieruit groeide zijn eigen muzikale universum waar multidisciplinariteit evident een deel van uitmaakt.

PETER JACQUEMYN is beeldend kunstenaar, performer en muzikant. Als muzikant bespeelt hij contrabas en gebruikt hij zijn stem. Zijn persoonlijke stijl vindt zijn roots in jazz, hedendaagse, experimentele en traditionele muziek, ... alsook in diverse culturele tradities.

Afwisselend – solo en duo – gaan Thielemans en Jacquemyn via de vrije improvisatie een muzikale dialoog aan met elkaar.

ERIC THIELEMANS is an avid seeker on drums and percussion. He enjoyed a classical education and subsequently absorbed influences from jazz, improvisation and contemporary music. A multidisciplinary focus is the key to Thielemans’ own musical universe.

PETER JACQUEMYN is next to a visual artist also a performer and musician. As a musician, he plays double bass and uses his voice. His personal style has its roots in jazz, contemporary, experimental and traditional music, ... as well as in various cultural traditions.

Through free improvisation Thielemans and Jacquemyn will confront each other and create a musical dialogue.

Zich verdiepend in de mysterieuze wereld van het sjamanisme, oude aanroepingen en magie deelt O’SERPENTINE met ons de wijsheid van de slang. Door het verkennen van de magische verbeelding en door de mogelijkheden van geleide meditatie en helende praktijken creëert O’Serpentine een dialoog tussen geluid en woord. O’Serpentine is: ASASARA / Nikkie Van Lierop (vocals/loops/percussion), SATYR / Jeroen Olyslaegers (voice/writing/ ritual advisor), ASHTORETH / Peter Verwimp (guitars/loops/vocals).

Delving into a world of shamanism, ancient invocations and magical intention O’SERPENTINE searches for and shares with us the wisdom of the serpent. Together, they conjure up a new paradigm for magical imagination by exploring the possibilities of guided meditation and healing practices and by creating a ritual dialogue between sound and word. GIOVANNI DI DOMENICO (piano, Fender Rhodes) en MATTHIEU CALLEJA (drums) zijn beiden boegbeelden binnen de vrije improvisatiemuziek. Onder de naam KALIMI maken ze samen experimentele elektronische muziek.

DIKEMAN/GOVAERT/SERRIES TRIO

Na hun eerste muzikale kennismaking namen DIRK SERRIES (gitaar) en JOHN DIKEMAN (tenorsax) hun debuutplaat op. Het resultaat: improvisatie waarin de kruisbestuiving tussen freejazz, noise en avantgarde een homogeen traagbewegend organisme vormt. Uniek voor het concert tijdens BANG! wordt dit duo uitgebreid met ONNO GOVAERT (drums).

Soon after their first musical encounter DIRK SERRIES (guitar) and JOHN DIKEMAN (tenor sax) recorded their debut album as a duo. The result of this union: improvisation which forms the cross-fertilization between free jazz, noise and avant-garde, a homogeneous slow moving organism. Especially for their concert during BANG! the duo will be joined by Cactus Truck drummer ONNO GOVAERT.

CHARLOTTE VANDEN EYNDE & KRISTOF ROSEEUW

CHARLOTTE VANDEN EYNDE creëert eigenzinnige choreografieën en performances, waarin het lichaam centraal staat. Aanvankelijk draaide haar werk rond kwetsbaarheid, intimiteit en vrouwelijkheid; vervolgens spitste ze zich toe op het lichaam als materie om later terug te keren naar de pure dans.

Bassist KRISTOF ROSEEUW is op diverse fronten actief binnen de Belgische jazzscene.

Hij leidde onder meer het radioKUKAorkest, een uniek ensemble dat de grenzen aftast van hedendaagse jazz, klassiek en folk. Daarnaast is hij vaste bassist bij de prettig gestoorde big band FES (Flat Earth Society) en Too Noisy Fish.

Op vraag van curator Teun Verbruggen slaan Vanden Eynde en Roseeuw de handen in elkaar en brengen ze een éénmalige improvoorstelling.

CHARLOTTE VANDEN EYNDE creates highly personal choreographies and performances, focusing on the body with a strong sculptural and imaginative sensibility. Initially her work concentrated on vulnerability, intimacy and femininity. Later on she focused her work on the body itself and finally returned to dance in its purest form.

Bass player KRISTOF ROSEEUW is active on various fronts in the Belgian jazz scene. He was, among others, the bandleader of radioKUKAorkest, a unique ensemble that pushes the boundaries of contemporary jazz, classical music and folk. He is also the bass player of the wacky big band FES (Flat Earth Society) and Too Noisy Fish.

In het kader van BANG! creëert kunstenares NADJMA RAHAMATALI het artistieke project ‘Desoriented’. De voorstelling brengt verschillende artistieke expressievormen samen, waaronder bodypainting, dans, visuele kunsten en muziek. De performance evoceert de zoektocht naar zelfkennis die zowel positieve als negatieve aspecten omvat en initieert ons bij het universele collectieve bewustzijn.

For the BANG! festival artist NADJMA RAHAMATALI creates a new artistic project named ‘Desoriented’. Different forms of artistic expression, including body painting, dance, visual arts and music are brought together in one show. The performance evokes the quest for self-knowledge that can include both positive and negative aspects, and initiates us to the universal collective consciousness.

KEENROH

KEENROH won in 2014 de prijs voor beloftevolle bands op Gent Jazz. Het duo - Thijs Troch (piano) en Jan Daelman (fluit) -brengt een soort instant composing die getuigt van een imposante durf en variatie. Belangrijke muzikale uitgangspunten zijn hun veelzijdige waaier aan klanken en intense dialogen. Deze benadering integreren ze in een elektrisch-akoestische setting.

Last summer KEENROH won the prize for Young Jazz Talent at Ghent Jazz festival. This duo - Thijs Troch (piano) en Jan Daelman (flute) - brings instant composing that incorporates impressive musical courage and a lot of variation. Important musical principles of this duo are the large spectrum of sounds and the use of intense dialogues.

Keenroh integrates this approach into an electric-acoustic setting.

SIMPLE

Componist/producer PIERRE VERVLOESEM (X-Legged Sally, A Group, Flat Earth Society) is terug met een nieuw kwartet. De muziek van SIMPLE - Pierre Vervloesem (bas), Bruno Vansina (altsaxofoon), Joris Caluwaert (piano & Rhodes) en Didier Fontaine (drums) - omvat uiteenlopende elementen, gaande van Franse filmmuziek en New-Yorkse new-wave, miserabele prog-rock tot de meest verlichte moderne jazz.

Composer / producer PIERRE VERVLOESEM (X-Legged Sally, A Group, Flat Earth Society) returns with a new quartet. The music of SIMPLE - Pierre Vervloesem (bass), Bruno Vansina (alto saxophone), Joris Caluwaert (piano & Rhodes) and Didier Fontaine (drums) - is a naive, almost grotesque version of jazz. It includes very diverse elements ranging from French film, the new wave of New York, and miserable progrock to the most enlightened modern jazz.

DEnnis TYFUS DENNIS TYFUS is voortdurend op verschillende fronten actief: muziek, tekenen, magazines, posters, lp-covers, radioprogramma’s, ... Zijn diverse creatieve uitspattingen brengt hij samen onder het label ‘Ultra Eczema’. In het kader van BANG! krijgt hij een ‘Carte Blanche’ van curator Teun Verbruggen. Tyfus stelt voor de gelegenheid een unieke ‘Ultra Eczema-avond’ samen.

DENNIS TYFUS is constantly busy with numerous activities that are vital for him: music, drawing, magazines, posters, LP covers, radio programs, ... He reunites his oeuvre under the Ultra Eczema label. Within the context of the BANG! festival Dennis Tyfus gets a ‘Carte Blanche’ of curator Teun Verbruggen. For this special occasion Tyfus will present a unique ‘Ultra Eczema-night’

FREDERIK LEROUX & NATHAN WOUTERS

FREDERIK LEROUX speelt zowel geïmproviseerde als gecomponeerde muziek voor banjo en ‘tape delay’. Hoewel steeds een gevoel van wereldvreemdheid om de hoek loert, wordt een scala van emoties behandeld: introspectie, eenzaamheid, stilte, …

Bassist NATHAN WOUTERS studeerde achtereenvolgens jazz bij Piet Verbist en Nicolas Thys aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Antwerpen en aan de Universiteit van Gothenburg met de vermaarde Anders Jormin als docent. Beide opleidingen voltooide hij met grootste onderscheiding. Intussen deelde hij met diverse muzikanten binnen- en buitenlandse club- en festivalpodia.

FREDERIK LEROUX plays both improvised and composed music for banjo and ‘tape delay’.

The banjo is deliberately approached from an intuitive angle. The lack of formal knowledge about the instrument works liberating. Although a sense of alienation still lurks around the corner, a range of emotions is cited: introspection, solitude, silence,...

Bassist NATHAN WOUTERS studied jazz with Piet Verbist and Nicolas Thys at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp and then continued his studies at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) with renowned Anders Jormin as his teacher. He graduated magna cum laude.

Today Wouters is part of the up and coming young jazz scene and has shared the stage with several renowned musicians.

UNFOLD

Aan het einde van de jaren 1960 theoretiseerden wetenschappers over de mogelijkheid om geluid te herwinnen uit oude artefacten. Hoewel de ‘archeoakoestiek’ in de daarop volgende jaren nooit vaste voet aan de grond kreeg, blijft het een aantrekkelijke gedachte om via objecten geluiden uit vroegere tijden te horen. Met ‘The Stratisonographic Experiment’ poogt UNFOLD – voor toekomstige archeologen - het concert dat deze avond plaatsvindt vast te leggen in de vorm van een vaas en dit door middel van 3D printing. Als een stuk geschiedenis wordt deze vaas een akoestische tijdscapsule van 13 maart 2015.

In the late 1960’s scientists theorized about the possibilities to recover sounds from ancient artefacts. Although ’archaeoacoustics’ never gained traction in subsequent years, it is an appealing thought that one could be able to hear the sound of passed times through objects. With ‘The Stratisonographic Experiment’ UNFOLD tries, for future archeologists, to embed the performance of this evening onto a vase, by using 3D-printing. During the performance, one single vase will be created and on that vase, the sounds of the performance will be embedded. As a piece of history, this vase will become an acoustic time capsule of March 13, 2015.

JOZEF DUMOULIN nodigt in het kader van zijn ‘Carte Blanche’ BENOÎT DELBECQ uit.

Beiden staan bekend voor hun open en vernieuwende kijk op muziek en piano. Ze spelen elk ook een pioniersrol om die ideeën om te zetten tot spannende klank, zowel binnen als buiten het jazz-idioom. Al improviserend wisselen ze nieuwe en oude recepten uit, steeds wakker voor het moment.

JOZEF DUMOULIN invites for his ‘Carte Blanche’ BENOÎT DELBECQ. Both musicians are known for their open and innovative approach to music and piano. They each play a pioneering role in turning ideas into exciting sound, both inside and outside of the jazz idiom.

Through improvising they exchange new and old recipes, always awake for that moment to come…

MAURO

MAURO PAWLOWSKI begon zijn muzikale carrière als frontman van Evil Superstars. Tegenwoordig speelt hij o.m. bij dEUS. In 2008 ging hij op tournee met Ramsey Nasr in een programma waarin literatuur, muziek en theater gecombineerd werd en hij publiceerde een dichtbundel onder zijn volledige naam: Mauro Antonio Pawlowski. In het kader van ‘BANG!’ kreeg Mauro een ‘Carte Blanche’ van gastcurator Teun Verbruggen. Benieuwd welke fijne gasten hij meebrengt!

MAURO PAWLOWSKI began his musical career as frontman of Evil Superstars. Nowadays he plays in dEUS next to several other own projects. In 2008 Pawlowski went on tour with Ramsey Nasr with a program in which literature, music and theatre were combined. Mauro also published a collection of poems under his full name: Mauro Antonio Pawlowski. As part of BANG! he got a ‘Carte Blanche’ from guest curator Teun Verbruggen. We are very curious what fine guests Pawlowski will bring!

CLOSING NIGHT BANG! CONCERT – 21:30 @ RECYCLART

LUR

LUR (Zweden) steeg op uit de donkerste hoeken van elektronische junkyards - gevuld met vergeten speelgoed en bizarre uitvindingen - om ongehoorzaamheid en feest te brengen.

Waanzinnige livelooping, verwoestende beats, interactieve visuals, acrobatiek en vreemde instrumenten worden vermengd in een uniek cluboptreden. Sinds 2007 betoverde Lur het Europese publiek in tal van clubs en festivals zoals Fusion festival (DE), Kater Holzig (DE) en Arvikafestivalen (SE).

From the darkest corners of electronic junkyards, filled with forgotten toys and bizarre inventions, LUR has risen to bring disobedience and dancing. Lur is a unique club concept filled with livelooping madness, devastating beats, interactive visuals, acrobatics and strange instruments.

Since 2007, Lur have bewitched audiences at clubs and festivals across Europe such as Fusion festival (DE), Kater Holzig (DE) and Arvikafestivalen (SE).

INTERNAL SUN is het audiovisuele live project van het Antwerpse duo ANDREW CLAES en VJ Natché. Claes katapulteert live-looping, glitching en slicing naar de next level. INTERNAL SUN is the audiovisual live project of ANDREW ‘Chi’ CLAES & Vj Natché (visuals). Live they create a personal, largely improvised take on the Warp back catalogue and its pioneering sound of hi-tech jazz, the cinematic live acts of Nosaj Thing or Amon Tobin, and the Flying Lotus brand of esoteric instrumental hiphop which created more possibilities for live electronic music performances.

JORIS VAN DE MOORTEL Joris Van de Moortel is schilder, beeldhouwer, performer en muzikant. Hij maakt gebruik van de architectuur en de context van een specifieke plaats om er zijn veelzijdige werken op te stellen. Hij laat bewust sporen van zijn creatieve proces na. Wat Joris Van de Moortel vernielt met zijn performances, dat bouwt hij weer op met zijn installaties, volgens zijn heel eigen proces van omkering, gekenmerkt door improvisatie en instabiliteit. Pas als hij daarmee klaar is, heeft het werk zijn sculpturale dimensie verkregen. Voor de installatie die Van de Moortel creëert voor W-O-L-K-E, vertrekt hij van dezelfde principes. De bestaande ruimte wordt omgebouwd tot een ‘speaker kabinet’ waarbinnen de concerten en performances plaats vinden.

Joris Van de Moortel is a painter, sculptor, performer and musician. He uses the architecture and context of a specific place in order to set up his multifaceted work. Van de Moortel deliberately leaves traces of his creative process behind. What Joris destroys with his performances, he wil build up again in his installations according to his very own process of reversal, characterized by improvisation and instability. Only when he is finished, the work obtains its sculptural dimension. For the installation in W-O-L-K-E, Van de Moortel uses these same principles. DEAR PIGS Dear Pigs is de creatieve studio van het kunstenaarsduo Jan Laute en Sarah Michielsen.

De roots van Dear Pigs liggen bij architectuur en fotografie, maar de studio verkent een brede waaier aan disciplines zoals grafisch design, illustratie, stedelijke interventies en geluidskunst. Gesitueerd in Brussel, hanteert Dear Pigs de ambiguïteit van de stad als een belangrijke bron van inspiratie. Voor W-O-L-K-E creëert Dear Pigs ‘Les bijoux de la Castafiore’. Deze installatie wil de zakelijke kantoorruimte, die W-O-L-K-E is, transformeren. De installatie schept de juiste context die aansluit bij de concerten, voorstellingen en performances die er plaats vinden. Bewegende licht- en schaduwvlekken scheppen een dynamisch beeld in de ruimte en projecties nodigen het publiek subtiel uit om de ruimte op een andere manier te ervaren.

PETER JACQUEMYN PETER JACQUEMYN is muzikant en beeldend kunstenaar. Als muzikant experimenteert hij met contrabas en stem. Als beeldend kunstenaar legt hij zich toe op beeldhouwen, tekenen en performen. De twee werelden, muziek en beeldende kunsten, worden op een gelijkwaardig niveau gecombineerd. Muziek is meer dan begeleiding, het visuele is meer dan decor. Tijdens het 6-weken durende BANG! programma werkt Peter Jacquemyn aan een grote wand- en plafondschildering in W-O-L-K-E. EĂŠnmalige passanten aanschouwen het werk als een tussenstadium van een work in progress. Regelmatige bezoekers van het programma worden getuige van de geleidelijke evolutie van het werk.

PETER JACQUEMYN is next to a visual artist also a performer and musician. As a musician, he plays double bass and uses his voice. As an artist, he concentrates on sculpting, drawing and performing. The two worlds - music and visual arts- are combined on an equal level. Music is more than just guidance and the visual is more than just a decor. During the six-week program of BANG! Peter Jacquemyn will work on a large wall and ceiling painting in W-O-L-K-E. Once-only visitors see the work as an intermediate stage of a work in progress. ETEN & DRINKEN Elke woensdag tussen 12u30 en 14u00 is er de W-O-L-K-E lunch. Ook op de avonden van de voorstellingen in W-O-L-K-E kan er vanaf 18u00 aangeschoven worden aan het buffet.

Alle gerechten zijn bereid met verse vegetarisch – biologische ingrediënten. Het drankaanbod bestaat onder meer uit lokaal gebrouwen Brusselse speciale bieren.
