350 million copies The Best Selling Author 350 million copies sold by Stephen King In 1973, Stephen King was working as an English teacher in Hampden, Maine, and selling short stories on the side to make ends meet. Later that year, he accepted a $2,500 advance for his first novel. By decade’s end, he had written several other horror novels that remain among his most popular works: Salem’s Lot, The Shining, The Dead Zone and The Stand. He hasn’t slowed down since, publishing almost 50 novels and over 200 short stories, including several works under the pen name Richard Bachman. As of 2013, total sales for King’s books were estimated to be between 300 and 350 million copies.

Rated the longest novel ever by the Guinness Book of World Records, there’s no doubt that Proust’s masterpiece could quite easily double up as a mightily effective doorstop, with 13 volumes clocking up nearly1.3 million words. Its theme of involuntary memory is repeated though the course of following the narrator’s life, from childhood to adulthood. Published between 1913 and 1927, it had a profound influence on many works that were to follow in the 20th Century; it’s considered the definitive modern novel by many leading scholars.

The Holy Bible The King James Bible Although it is impossible to obtain exact figures, there is little doubt that the Bible is the world’s best-selling and most widely distributed book. A survey by the Bible Society concluded that around 2.5 billion copies were printed between 1815 and 1975, but more recent estimates put the number at more than 5 billion. By the end of 1995, combined global sales of Today’s English Version (Good News) New Testament and the Bible (copyright for which is held by the Bible Societies) exceeded 17.75 million copies, and the whole Bible had been translated into 349 languages; 2123 languages have at least one book of the Bible in that language. Given all the hype surrounding E.L. James’s “Fifty Shades Of Grey,” you might think that’s the most popular book in the world. But you’d be wrong. The most read book in the world is the Bible. Writer James Chapman created a list of the most read books in the world based on the number of copies each book sold over the last 50 years. He found that the Bible far out sold any other book, with a whopping 3.9 billion copies sold over the last 50 years. Quotations from the Works of Mao Tse-tung came in second with 820 million copies sold, and Harry Potter came in third with 400 million copies sold.

American Weekly News Magazine Time magazine published a long time Time (styled within the magazine as TIME) is an American weekly news magazine published in New York City. It was founded in 1923 and for decades was dominated by Henry Luce, who built a highly profitable stable of magazines. A European edition (Time Europe, formerly known as Time Atlantic) is published in London and also covers the Middle East, Africa and, since 2003, Latin America. An Asian edition (Time Asia) is based in Hong Kong. The South Pacific edition, which covers Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, is based in Sydney, Australia. In December 2008, Time discontinued publishing a Canadian advertiser edition. Time has the world’s largest circulation for a weekly news magazine, and has a readership of 25 million, 20 million of which are based in the United States. As of 2012, it had a circulation of 3.3 million making it the eleventh most circulated magazine in the United States reception room circuit, and the second most circulated weekly behind People. As of 2014, its circulation was 3,286,467. Richard Stengel was the managing editor from May 2006 to October 2013, when he joined the U.S. State Department. The Average Reading Time Residents of India spend the most time reading According to new information from the NOP World Culture Score Index 2015, residents of India and of Thailand spend the most time reading per week of the countries measured, while the US trails behind at number 22. According to the NOP World Culture Score Index, residents of India spend an average of 10.42 hours a week reading. Thailand came in at number two with residents reading an average of 9.24 hours every week and China was third with 8 hours. The Philippines followed with an average of 7.36 and Egypt was fifth with an average of 7.30 hours. The average time an American spends reading is 5.42 hours.

160 million dollars The Most Popular Fantasy Novel Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling J.K. Rowling earned £3 million ($5.3 million) a week in the last year; six times more than the second highest-paid author in the world, it has been disclosed.

The 43-year-old author, who was a single mother on benefits a decade ago, now has a fortune of more than £560 million and growing. Rowling, who has sold over 375 million books, is at the center of a multi-billion pound film and marketing industry. The mother-ofthree has also managed to give birth to two children while creating the magical world of Howarts. Forbes magazine this week crowned her the world’s best-paid author, noting that her £160 million income was more than the next nine best selling writers put together. The report’s author Lacey Rose, said: “While the publishing industry has struggled to come up with a “Happily Ever After” storyline in recent years, there’s still plenty of money to be made in the business of books. “It was wizardry that transformed J.K. Rowling from a destitute single mother on welfare into a bestselling billionaire. “The adventures of the teen magician and his Hogwarts classmates took the publishing world by storm in 1998, when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone became a bona fide hit. “Over on the big screen, her Potter franchise has already generated £2.1 billion at the worldwide box office--and she still has three more flicks to come.” And it is set to continue as the final installment in the film series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II is not due out until 201. Rowling shares creative control over the movies and negotiated an undisclosed cut of the profits. She also receives a cut from toy merchandising machine, with Mattel earning an estimated £100 million plus million worth of Potter paraphernalia. Video games by Electronic Arts generate even more. And images of the boy wizard and his

friends at Hogwarts appear on items from sticking plasters, to sweets. And an amusement park is being built “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” in the Islands of Adventure area of Universal’s Orlando Park. Rowling, who has homes in Edinburgh, Perthshire and London, has said of her good fortune: “I know I am the luckiest woman in the world. I am immensely privileged.” The writer said she treated both criticism of her books as formulaic, and praise from fellow writers like Stephen King, equally. “Ultimately if the books deserve to survive and they don’t deserve, they won’t. “History will judge and that is what ultimately matters. “It really helps you put everything else in perspective.” She is now devoting much of her energy and fortune to charity - having founded the Children’s High Level Group and is patron of MS Scotland. Earlier this year she revealed she is writing another book for children, writing it in cafes, where she began the Harry Potter series. “I will continue writing for children because that’s what I enjoy.

The Most Expensive Comic Book Action Comics Issue #01 Super-rich! An original copy of the Action Comics #1 that initially cost 10 cents and introduced Earth to Superman became the world’s most expensive comic book Sunday when it raked in $3.2 million on eBay. When Darren Adams decided to put his incredibly rare, nearly pristine copy of the debut issue of the Man of Steel up for auction on eBay, he generously started the bid at 99 cents. Less than two hours later, the price had risen faster than a speeding bullet, past $1.5 million. When the auction ended Sunday night, the owner of Pristine Comics in Federal Way, Wash., discovered that his holy grail of comics had scored him $3,207,852. Adams’ 1938 issue was labeled as having “perfect white pages” and given a condition rating of 9.0 by the comic grading service Certified Guaranty Company (CGC). No other copies of Action Comics #1 have been graded higher and only one other has ever received a 9.0, according to its eBay description. There are only around 50-100 original copies believed to still be in existence. The multimillion-dollar issue topped another Action Comics #1, previously owned by actor and avid Superman fan Nicolas Cage, which sold in 2011 for $2.16 million. Adams will be taking a page out of the Metropolis Marvel’s playbook and plans to donate 1 percent of his proceeds to the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, which is dedicated to helping the treatment and research of spinal-cord injuries and paralysis. Christopher Reeve famous played Superman in the 1970s and ’80s.

Amazon Kindle devices enable users to browse, buy, download and read e-books, newspapers, magazines and other digital media via wireless networking to the Kindle Store. The hardware platform, developed by Amazon subsidiary Lab126, began as a single device and now comprises a range of devices, including e-readers with E Ink electronic paper displays, and Android-based tablets with color LCD screens. All Kindle devices integrate with the Kindle Store to get content and as of February 2016, the store has over 4.3 million e-books available in the US.

World’s Largest Library The Library of Congress
The Library of Congress, located in Washington, D.C., is the world’s largest library, with nearly 110 million items in almost every language and format stored on 532 miles of bookshelves. Its collections constitute the world’s most comprehensive record of human creativity and knowledge. Founded in 1800 to serve the reference needs of Congress, the library has grown from an original collection of 6,487 books to a current accumulation of more than 16 million books and more than 120 million other items and collections, from ancient Chinese wood-block prints to compact discs. The Library of Congress was created by Act of April 24, 1800 (2 Stat. 56), which provided for the removal of the seat of government to the new capital city of Washington, D.C. (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania had formerly served as the nation’s capital), and for $5,000 “for the purchase of such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress and for putting up a suitable apartment for containing them therein.” The library was housed in the new capitol until August 1814, when British troops invaded Washington, D.C., and burned the capitol building, destroying nearly three thousand volumes of the small congressional library. The first major book collection acquired by Congress was the personal library of former president Thomas Jefferson, purchased in 1815 at a cost of $23,950. In 1851 a second fire destroyed two-thirds of the library’s accumulated holdings of 35,000 volumes, including a substantial portion of the Jefferson library. Congress voted a massive appropriation to replace the lost books, and by the end of the Civil War, the collections of the library had grown to 82,000 volumes. The librarian of Congress is appointed by the president with the advice and consent of the Senate. In 1864 President Abraham Lincoln appointed as librarian Ainsworth Rand Spofford, who opened the library to the public and greatly expanded its collections. Spofford successfully advocated a change in the copyright law so that the library would receive two free

copies of every book, map, chart, musical composition, engraving, print, and photograph submitted for copyright. Under subsequent legislation (2 U.S.C.A. §§ 131–168d) the library’s acquisitions included free copies of the Congressional Record and of all U.S. statutes, which Spofford parlayed into document exchanges with all foreign nations that had diplomatic relations with the United States. Soon the Capitol’s library rooms, attics, and hallways were filled with the library’s growing collections, necessitating construction of the library’s first permanent building, the Thomas Jefferson Building, which opened in 1897. The john Adams Building was added by Congress in 1939, and the James madison Memorial Building in 1980. These three buildings provide nearly 65 acres of floor space. Supported mainly by appropriations from Congress, the library also uses income derived from funds received from foundations and other private sources and administered by the Library of Congress Trust Fund Board, as well as monetary gifts presented for direct application (2 U.S.C.A. §§ 154– 163). Many of the greatest items in the library have come directly from individual U.S. citizens or were purchased with money donated by them. Gifts that have enriched the cultural heritage of the nation include the private papers of President Lincoln from his son Robert Todd Lincoln; rare Stradivarius violins used for public performances; the Lessing J. Rosenwald collection of illustrated books and incunabula (early works of art or industry); Joseph Pennell’s contribution of Whistler drawings and letters; and hundreds of thousands of letters and documents from musicians, artists, scientists, writers, and public figures.
