Amsterdam Academy of Architecture
‘‘This Academy is not a school but a home’, a foreign guest speaker remarked. A small yet telling nuance that typifies the atmosphere in the school. We want to provide a place where students of various nationalities and cultural backgrounds can learn and study, from lecturers and from each other.’ Madeleine Maaskant, director Amsterdam Academy of Architecture

The Academy of Architecture Amsterdam an international laboratory
We stand for an open and inquiring attitude, for experimentation, and we encourage students to adopt their own position. We consider the city of Amsterdam to be the laboratory for the design assignments of our students and lecturers. The Academy maintains close contacts with the professional community in the region, with public services, commissioning parties and developers. Our study programmes also occupy a prominent position internationally. The Academy has strong ties with related degree programmes abroad. Students from all corners of the world study at the Academy, international guest lecturers and speakers regularly visit, and students often participate in foreign excursions and projects.
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture
The Academy of Architecture is the only educational institute in the Netherlands that offers the Master’s programmes Architecture, Urbanism and Landscape Architecture in an interdisciplinary manner. This combination lends the Academy a unique position within the Netherlands and abroad.
Studying and working simultaneously Studying and working go hand in hand during the degree programme. That combination means that the students and lecturers are directly involved in the practice of design and research. You will already form an active part of a broad network of colleagues during your study. Those who graduate from the Academy often remain involved in the degree programme. The student becomes an employer and, on the basis of that position, a lecturer or mentor for a new generation of students. 5
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture
Unique in the Netherlands: three Master’s programmes in an interdisciplinary manner Architecture, urbanism and landscape architecture are independent disciplines within the Academy, which are partially offered in combination. In this way, students are prepared for the current, integrated professional practice that simultaneously demands specialisation and breadth from students. The Academy of Architecture is the only educational institute in the Netherlands that offers the Master’s programmes in an interdisciplinary manner. This combination lends the Academy a unique position within the Netherlands and abroad.
Study in an international community A study trip abroad, studying at another degree programme for a semester or setting up a project with a group of foreign students; that’s all possible at the Academy. We maintain an active network of European degree programmes, through which students and lecturers are exchanged on a small scale. The Academy is a member of the European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE) and is a partner of the European Masters in Landscape Architecture 6
Inspiring environment in the centre of Amsterdam
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture
(EMiLA), through which you can obtain the ‘European Master in Landscape Architecture’. The Academy has been working together with other educational institutions within the Erasmus programme, on the basis of which international workshops are organised. In addition, there are many foreign projects and partnerships with different design programmes in Europe. In the summer months, we organise the socalled Summer School: various international excursions which you can participate in.
The Academy of Architecture is located on the Waterlooplein in Amsterdam in a 17th-century building complex refurbished by Claus en Kaan Architecten. The Academy occupies a unique place in the cultural life of Amsterdam and plays an active role in the professional discourse. Lectures, workshops, events and exhibitions are organised in cooperation with other organisations. Lecture series - open to students - based on topical themes take place throughout the year.
Direct acces to the register of architects After obtaining the Master’s title (Master of Science), you are entitled to start an independent professional practice and granted immediate admission to the register of architects, urbanists and landscape architects.

We integrate practice-oriented research in the education The world is changing continuously and increasingly quickly. Social, practical and technical developments place new demands on a designer. That is why the Academy integrates practice-oriented research into the education. The professors organise masterclasses, projects, excursions, exhibitions and lectures within their research programme. Research themes in recent years include: Tabula Scripta about the redesignation of and new possibilities for existing buildings in the city, and High-Density Energy Landscapes, focused on the development of sustainable energy landscapes. And the Future Urban Regions (FUR) research group, a collaborative project of the six Academies of Architecture, focused on improving the city and the urban environment.
Part of the Amsterdam University of the Arts In order to arrive at new insights and innovations, you must be able and dare to look beyond the borders of your own field. The Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) offers students a broad orientation in terms of arts and culture, and for that reason attaches great importance to the fact that students are able to gain knowledge of developments within the other arts disciplines. Within the range of programmes offered at the AHK, we provide room for collaboration with other degree programmes and international exchanges.
Admission We expect that students who enrol at the Academy have acquired the necessary technical knowledge during the Bachelor’s phase. A selection procedure may form part of the admissions procedure. Students who do not meet the admission requirements may be eligible for the preparatory course in Architecture or Urbanism and Landscape Architecture, so that they may be admitted after completion of the course. Up-to-date information about admission 8
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture
requirements can be found at www.academyofarchitecture.nl. In addition, the Academy offers a minor in Architecture and a minor in Urbanism and Landscape Architecture, through which students from relevant preparatory courses can already become acquainted with the education during the Bachelor’s phase. The Academy organises four introductory workshops during the academic year: two for Architecture and two for Urbanism and Landscape Architecture. By following the workshops, you can explore the field of study and become acquainted with the education. Visit www.academyofarchitecture.nl for more information about the degree programmes, open days, lectures and exhibitions. You can also learn more about the graduates who present their work on the Graduates page.
Artists in Residence In collaboration with the various faculties of the Amsterdam University of the Arts, an Artist in Residence (AIR) is invited every year who ‘disrupts’ the education in a positive sense. In recent years, surprising and much talked about projects and lecture series have been realised under the guidance of, among other people, visual artists Jeroen Kooijmans and Jeanne van Heeswijk, architect Rianne Makkink, cultural sociologist and future thinker Michiel Schwarz and photographer Jeroen Musch. Artist and architect Sarah van Sonsbeeck is the Artist in Residence for the 2017-2018 academic year.

‘This study deals with the foundation and core of the profession of architect: designing. In addition, we ensure that you are informed about current developments and capable of reacting to them. The standard of the projects is surprisingly high – the students give me goose bumps with their graduation work each year.’ Jan-Richard Kikkert, head of the Master in Architecture
13
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture
Master in Architecture The Master in Architecture focuses on the future role of the architect as central figure in the design process. You will develop a personal architectural signature style at the Academy of Architecture. The curriculum is focused on architectural thought and design. A lot of attention is paid to knowledge of the oeuvre, craftsmanship and determining your own position within the profession. As a result of the guest lecturers from the professional practice, the small-scale education and the independent work, you will be able adopt your own position.
14
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture Sweder Spanjer, Master in Architecture
As an architect, you design more than a ‘practical solution’. With a great degree of spatial insight, you conceive buildings that function properly and appeal to the imagination. When you design a building, you find yourself in an area of tension between preconditions – the location, requested functions, wishes of the users – technical knowledge and your artistic interpretation. You are both an engineer and a conceptual thinker. It is this combination that makes architectural design so exciting. Due to societal, social and technical developments, the way in which buildings function is changing, as well as their organisation and appearance. The extent to which you, as architect, are able to respond to this, and thus construct contemporary buildings, determines the value of the profession. These issues play an important role during the degree programme and the
continuous dialogue surrounding these issues with lecturers and fellow students will help you to find your own direction within the field. Architecture research group Under the title Tabula Scripta, or: the ‘written slate’ – the opposite of Tabula Rasa (blank slate) – Floris Alkemade has developed a research programme, together with research fellows Jarrik Ouburg and Michiel van Iersel, which researches how architects relate to existing places and design practices, from historical city centres to post-war suburbs and rural areas, in the Netherlands and abroad. Parallel to the study, a series of guest lectures, workshops and excursions are organised, and the above-mentioned trio are working on compiling an international knowledge network and a publication that will be presented at the end of 2018. 15

‘My aim at the time was not to become a landscape architect – I deliberately wanted to study at the Academy. It is demanding and intensive, but above all a valuable experience that shapes the rest of your life.’ Hannah Schubert, alumna Master in Landscape Architecture, honourable mention Archiprix Netherlands 2016

Master in Urbanism Urbanism has developed into a field with various roles in spatial planning. The profession has a strong public objective. There are many areas of overlap with disciplines like economics, social sciences, traffic engineering, environmental sciences and with other spatial design disciplines.
18
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture Iris Wijn, Master in Urbanism
Urbanism takes place on various scale levels, from street to region. As an urbanist, you create spatial conditions for building assignments or the layout of the public domain. You will also make designs that are intended to be a form of spatial investigation such as visions on the densification or preservation of the city. This will bring you into the professional field of spatial planning and lend the work a strategic component. Urban design is the main focus of the Master in Urbanism. The focus in the study programme is, therefore, on becoming acquainted with the broad range of design assignments, acquiring design tools and, in particular, the further development of design
skills and learning to adopt positions within the professional discourse. Urbanism research group Eric Frijters has led the Urbanism research group, entitled Future Urban Regions (FUR). The research group is a cooperation project of the Academies of Architecture in Amsterdam, Arnhem, Groningen, Maastricht, Rotterdam and Tilburg. The aim is to develop forms of cooperation between educational institutes and local and regional governments, which together conduct design-based research for ‘healthy urbanisation’.

‘I hope that landscape architects design the living environment with an eye for everything that lives, because aesthetics and natural abundance lead to a higher quality of life. Nature-inclusive design is not a dream, but a challenge for our profession.’ Maike van Stiphout, head of the Master in Landscape Architecture

Master in Landscape Architecture Landscape Architecture is a creative discipline. You are able to sketch new visual manifestations, which are the result of a change of function. Moreover, you are explicitly aware of the influence of the time factor on the quality of the environment. You know how you can let time to do its work by establishing the right basic conditions, so that a sustainable and vibrant living environment is created for humans, plants and animals. 22
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture Brigitta van Weeren, Master in Landscape Architecture
You always work on changing an existing context. This requires a broad interest in landscape, soil structure and water systems, as well as cultural history, nature and ever-changing society. The professional practice includes assignments that differ considerably in terms of size and scale. You are trained to design finished products, such as parks, public spaces and gardens, but also learn to use design as a research method for area developments and urban transformations. With the Master in Landscape Architecture, you will acquire the knowledge and skills to come up with beautiful, sustainable design solutions. During design studios with colleagues, urbanists and architects, you will be
prepared for complex assignment situations and develop a personal design approach. Landscape Architecture research group Landscape architect Sven Stremke has been appointed professor of Landscape Architecture as of 1 September 2017. With his research group High-Density Energy Landscapes, he will succeed Han Wiskerke, who conducted research into Foodscapes for four years. Stremke, together with fellow researcher Dirk Oudes, will focus on the development of sustainable energy landscapes, with special attention for the role of design and the designer in energy transition: the generation, transport and storage of renewable energy. 23

‘I experienced my time studying at the Academy as positive, fantastic, social, brimming with energy and ambition. It was also difficult, of course, but that is not the prevailing memory. The Academy retrained me from a building engineer to a designer within a short space of time.’ Ard Hoksbergen, alumnus Master in Architecture joint winner Archiprix 2012

Study programme
The three Master’s degree programmes have the same structure. Projects, exercises and lectures are supplemented with morphology classes and students work actively on their own portfolio.
30
Internal curriculum Design projects form the basis of the study, with a varied and intensive range of design assignments and interpretations. In the case of exercises, the training of design skills is the main focus. In addition, there are exercises aimed at text analysis and writing. During morphology classes, students translate ideas into creations. In the Winter School, students work competitively within interdisciplinary teams on an assignment. Supplementary to this programme, there is the opportunity
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture to follow courses on self-management and presentation skills. Within the elective programme, students participate in the 1¡Lectures series, workshops that are offered by an Artist in Residence or professor, as well as excursions and study trips within the Netherlands and abroad. External curriculum During the four-year Master’s programme at the Academy, you are required to complete a minimum number of professional practice hours (4 x 840 hours) at a workplace relevant
to the degree programme. That can be an architectural firm, but it is also possible to work at other employers, such as an architecture centre, a research bureau or it is also possible to work abroad temporarily. By the end of the study, the professional experience must lead to a student possessing the knowledge, insight and skills that are specified in the learning outcomes for the disciplines architecture, urbanism and garden and landscape architecture set by the Architects Registration Bureau (Bureau Architectenregister). 31

Course Building Technique 15 EC Graduates in the possession of Bachelor’s degree in architectural design or interior architecture can follow the Building Technique course. This course is intended to bring technical knowledge to the required standard so that students with a different entry level in structural and technical fields can begin the Master in Architecture at the Academy of Architecture. The course partly coincides with the minor in Architecture.
32
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture Theory and design education Through this course programme, you will learn to substantiate design technically and practically. The calculation and visual representation of the forces between the structural elements is important. The relationship between load-bearing structures and design is the recurrent theme in the teaching material. The course is concluded with a design exercise in which integrated design with technical knowledge and skills is the main focus. Architecture and the architectural practice are the basis of this course. In addition, a series of lectures is organised in which various speakers talk about their field of expertise and their fascination for a particular element of architecture. The course is passed when you have successfully completed all examinations about the theory components and design elements. After the successful completion of the course admission is granted to the selection procedure for the Master in Architecture at the Academy of Architecture. Course dates The course is offered two times per year: from September to January and from February to July. The course has two fixed
lesson evenings per week. In addition, there are activities on Friday and also occasionally on Wednesday. For current dates, please see the website www.academyofarchitecture.nl. Registration People who are interested can register via the online registration form on the website www.academyofarchitecture.nl. Admission To be admitted to the Building Technique course the applicant needs to have a Bachelor’s degree in architectural design or interior architecture. Applicants are expected to possess qualifications in maths, physics and English at general secondary education or pre-university education level (havo/vwo) or equivalent. A selection procedure is part of the admission procedure. Selection is based on a motivation letter, CV and portfolio. Practical information The course fees are ₏ 950,- excluding costs for study material, excursions, literature and lunches during the workshops. As soon as international students register, the language of instruction for the course will be English. If that is not the case, the course will be offered in Dutch. 33
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture
Minor Architecture 30 EC During the minor in Architecture, entitled ‘Studio Amsterdam’, you will learn to seek out the unknown, work on the basis of your intuition and discover happy accidents. The local environment, the city of Amsterdam, the water and the many talented architects and artists in the city are the point of departure for this. 34
During the minor in Architecture, you will work a lot with scale models, photography and your own hands. By working with an open mind based on the properties of familiar materials like cardboard, wood or brick, you will arrive at designs that you would never have thought up beforehand. You will investigate the possibilities of materials and spaces by creating and building yourself. That does not mean that things like the location, the construction and the details are not important, but architecture becomes so much more interesting if you do not devise exactly what has to happen beforehand. Architecture is more than building; a building also tells a story. By discussing and presenting your work, you will learn to reflect on your work and to continue honing it further. Architects make use of various means of
communication: drawings, scale models, computer animations, photos and texts. Which way works best to convey your plan convincingly? In this regard, we can learn a lot from the world of advertising. You will learn to communicate your plan in an unambiguous and clear message.
Amsterdam Academy of Architecture
The minor in Architecture works on the basis of pleasure and curiosity through turning the customary steps in a design process, such as the analysis of the schedule of requirements, ‘upside down’. It is inspiring to learn from the work of others and to look at other fields of study within the arts. The way in which you can work on the basis of an image, a particular material and the inspiration of the city will be examined. Research, analysis, conceptualisation, production and presentation will come together in a design process that may appear to be chaotic, but turns out to be an attractive way of making architecture. We will walk through the city, visit architects and artists, invite people to talk about their fascinations and we will learn about the striking places and buildings in the city. The minor partly coincides with the Building Technique course.
Course dates The minor will commence in September and will be concluded with a final presentation in January. The lessons will take place on one evening per week and 3 to 4 days in the daytime. Please see www.academyofarchitecture.nl for the current course dates. Registration The registration for the minor in Architecture is arranged through the Dutch organisation Kies Op Maat. In order to register, your current degree programme should be affiliated with Kies Op Maat and prepared to enter into a learning agreement.
