Kim Leine made his debut in 2007 with a riotous semiautobiographical novel about incest and drugs in Greenland in the 1990s. It was widely agreed that Kalak (Kalak) was a fascinating work by an extraordinary talent. It was such a heavyweight debut – so poignant and personal – that more than one reviewer wondered whether Leine would have anything left to offer. But didn’t he just! Leine is now known as a writer who is not afraid to confront big emotions and launch into storytelling on a grand scale.

In Leine’s latest work, he grapples once more with a historical narrative and split personalities. Afgrunden (The Abyss) introduces the Danish twins Kaj and Ib, who volunteer to fight in the Finnish Civil War in 1918 – an experience that marks them for life. We follow them through the interwar period, culminating in their time in the resistance movement, in a tour de force that asks the big existential question: When we gaze into the abyss, what do we see? War and death? Normality and peace? Leine had originally envisaged a short, 100-page novel about the brothers, in which he would condense the big picture into a very small format. But before he knew it he had written more than 600 pages of closely typed text about the Finnish Civil War in 1918, about two similar yet very different brothers, about living in the shadow of war even in peacetime, about the human capacity to adapt to the most extreme of circumstances, about the truths and intensity only experienced in war and about how that experience makes it almost impossible to cope with peace and normality.

KIM LEINE was born in Norway in 1961, came to Denmark aged 17 and worked as a nurse in Greenland for 15 years. He returned to Denmark in 2004 and made his literary debut in 2007 with his semi-autobiographical novel Kalak (Kalak), a stark portrayal of the life of a Dane in modern Greenland. Since then, his activity has been non-stop – and so has his success. The historical novel Valdemarsdag (Waldemar’s Day), set in the period before World War II in Copenhagen, was published in 2008. Tunu (Tunu), another Greenland story, followed in 2009. In 2012, Profeterne i Evighedsfjorden (The Prophets of Eternal Fjord) confirmed Leine’s place as one of Denmark’s great storytellers. The novel, which portrays a local community in West Greenland in the 1700s, is the first part of an announced trilogy. It amassed a multitude of awards, including the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 2013, the adjudicating committee describing it as ‘a gripping epic about suppression and rebellion, an anti-colonial, wildly sprawling work that fantasises over man as body and mind’.

WITHOUT LOVE YOU CAN’T COMMUNICATE CULTURE

It always begins with spontaneous excitement and ends – usually – in publication. Forty years ago, Bogusława Socha ska wanted to try something no one had done before. She began by dropping her plan to study English, enrolled at the then brandnew Nordic faculty in Poznan and started studying Danish. Last year, the Danish Arts Foundation presented her with the Danish Translation Award.

Polish children all know and love Hans Christian Andersen, but Bogusława Socha ska nurses no romantic memories of a childhood spent devouring fairy tales and dreaming of learning Danish. In fact, she didn’t seriously begin to read Danish literature until she was at university. First it was women’s literature, which made quite an impact; it was a completely unknown field for her, one that didn’t exist in Poland at the time. ‘I dreamed of standing on the barricades, clutching the flag and inciting a revolution in the Polish literary world by translating Vita Andersen and Susanne Brøgger. But I didn’t. My plan to write a PhD on Danish women’s literature also ran into a wall of incomprehension at the University. Then I had kids and immersed myself in Danish children’s literature. It became my second love, and still is.’

Bogusława Socha ska says that she’s always been lucky to have jobs that let her keep up with Denmark and Danish culture – as lecturer in Danish literature at Mickiewicz University in Poznan, as cultural attaché at the Polish Embassy in Copenhagen, as Director of the Danish Cultural Institute in Warsaw and, last but by no means least, as a translator of Danish literature. ‘As a young lecturer at the University, I was the best possible ambassador for Denmark – a total fan and totally uncritical. The only thing I criticised strongly was the sympathetic attitudes of the Danish elite towards Communism, the Soviet Union and the GDR. We were, of course, pretty much all anti-Communist in Poland at the time. Now that I think I know Denmark better, the unreserved enthusiasm has evolved into a mature love that accepts and forgives drawbacks and flaws. But it

definitely is a form of love. Without love you can’t communicate culture.’

HER ENTHUSIASM SERVES AS HER COMPASS

It was love that first made her translate Danish literature into Polish, and she has now been doing so faithfully for the last three decades. Writers such as Suzanne Brøgger, Peter Høeg, Janina Katz, Knud Romer, Astrid Saalbach, Stig Dalager and Hans Christian Andersen have all been dressed up in Polish clothes by Bogusława Socha ska. She usually decides for herself what she wants to work on, her enthusiasm serving as her compass. She selects a work, translates it and then contacts a publisher. While most of her translations have appeared in print, it hasn’t always been easy. In Poland – like Germany – foreign literature is hugely popular,

the polar opposite of countries like the UK and the US, where only about 2 % of books are translations. About half of the fiction published in Poland was originally written in another language. ‘It isn’t difficult to get poems published in magazines, as long as the quality is okay,’ says Bogusława Socha ska. ‘But getting a collection by a foreign poet whose name is unknown in Poland published…? That’s a miracle. They do happen though.’ One of them happened recently. Bogusława Socha ska is about

to translate the whole of Yahya Hassan’s spectacular, self-titled debut poem collection. She put his collection forward for the European Poet of Freedom Award, which is presented in Gdansk every two years. Yahya Hassan is now one of the official nominees, which means the collection will be published. ‘Although the big wave of crime novels at the moment tends to overshadow a lot of other stuff – and it’s debatable whether it’s actually beneficial for Danish literature in general – it’s definitely a positive thing in a country like Poland, where crime fiction has served as a

trailblazer for other forms of Danish literature,’ Bogusława Socha ska explains. ‘I hope it will also pave the way for poetry eventually. So many amazing Danish poets are virtually unknown in Poland.’ She cites the legendary Inger Christensen as a prime example: ‘I’m deeply fascinated by Inger Christensen. BOGUSŁAWA SOCHA SKA, born 1955, taught Danish literature at Mickiewicz University in Poznan, and has been cultural attaché at the Polish Embassy in Copenhagen and Director of the Danish Cultural Institute in Warsaw. Danish authors she has translated into Polish over the last three decades include Suzanne Brøgger, Peter Høeg, Janina Katz, Knud Romer, Piet Hein, Ole Lund Kirkegaard and Kim Fupz Aakeson, and she has translated a whole series of works by Hans Christian Andersen. In 2007, she was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award in Odense for her translation of the collection Eventyr og historier (The Complete Fairy Tales and Stories) – the first direct Danish-to-Polish translation. It was also proclaimed Book of the Year in Poland by Magazyn Literacki Ksiazki. In December 2014, the Danish Arts Foundation presented her with the Danish Translation Award. Her selection and translation of Hans Christian Andersen’s Dagbøger (The Diaries of Hans Christian Andersen) was published at the same time. In February 2015, it too was named Book of the Year in her home country.

Awarding six out of six ‘hearts’ to Kirsten Hammann’s previous novel, Se på mig (Look at Me), Politiken’s reviewer concluded that although it might seem like an easy book it is actually fiendishly difficult, and felt convinced that Hemingway would have liked Hammann’s playfully light depiction of love, gender and art. The great man would probably also enjoy her rather odd new thriller, Alene hjemme (Home Alone), in which a seemingly idyllic relationship comes under threat from a cocktail of factors including jealousy, stepchildren, a desperate hankering after love and – most of all – the upstairs neighbour, who is just a touch too attractive.

From her very first publication it was clear that Hammann had a unique and distinct voice, and she went on to prove this repeatedly over the next two decades. You never know what will spring from her chameleon-like

pen next, although her books usually revolve around the analysis and dissection of the complex nature of modern women. Her latest offering, Alene hjemme (Home Alone) is no exception.

And that he spent a bit more time at home. Philip isn’t the only problem; there’s also the small matter of the beautiful and slightly bonkers upstairs neighbour, Frederikke. And then, one day, Sara’s food starts to taste strange. She begins falling asleep all the time and seeing things. And suspects somebody is trying to steal her happiness.

KIRSTEN HAMMANN, born 1965, attended the Danish Academy of Creative Writing from 1989 to 1991. She made her debut in 1992 with the critically acclaimed poetry collection, Mellem tænderne (Between the Teeth). Her subsequent novels include Fra smørhullet (The Diary of Cozy Corner) (2004) and Se på mig (Look at Me) (2011), a study of a study of how emotions such as guilt and loneliness afflict well-intentioned types and unhappy middle-class women in a modern welfare state.

POCKET-SIZED PEARLS OF WISDOM ‘Public interest in education and research isn’t new,’ says Carsten Fenger-Grøndahl, publishing director at Aarhus University Press (AUP) and one of the people behind Tænkepauser (Pause for Thought). ‘But modern publishers need to face facts. The book discusses how philosophers have observed, described, praised, criticised and analysed the many different forms of government in Europe throughout history. Thyssen leads the reader through the philosophical ideas behind nation-building and the

state’s role and purpose, all the way from ancient Greece to the modern welfare state. For Thyssen, philosophers are effectively politicians in the realm of words. A MODERN MEETING WITH JESUS

Brinkmann’s book may be researchbased, but it is also an affectionate parody of and commentary on the self-development craze that has catapulted many a seeker into a world of spirituality, self-realisation and therapy. In the past – at least, in our culture – Christianity was often the end point for such existential quests. This was the case for journalist Charlotte Rørth (born 1962), albeit against her will. In her personal, existential story of faith and taboo, Jeg mødte Jesus: Bekendelser fra en ufrvilligt troende (I Met Jesus: Confessions of an involuntary believer), Rørth tells of a remarkable event. Although she was neither religious nor spiritual, the Son of God appeared and spoke to her in a church in Spain. The experience sent a mental and

physical shockwave through her world. She couldn’t possibly go on as before and was forced to reconsider her modern, rational life. The book follows Charlotte Rørth’s journey as she explores literary and contemporary accounts of Jesus as a historical figure, and meets priests, spiritual guides and researchers into epilepsy and psychiatry, seeking clarity and understanding of her encounter. A review in Weekendavisen said: ‘First and foremost, it’s an admirably courageous book. [...] Years of angst and fear shine through clearly, but underneath it bubbles a joy that is neither exclusive nor overbearing, just credible, and can’t help but make an impression and provide food for thought.’

Debutant Prize A very special detective

The Booksellers Prize Queen of Crime in dazzling form ‘It is quite simply a a great crime novel,’ was the explanation when Denmark’s uncrowned Queen of Crime, Sara Blædel, was awarded the Booksellers prize, the Golden Laurel, joining the likes of AnneCathrine Riebnitzsky (2013), Kim Leine (2012) and Helle Helle (2011). STARK DEBUT NOVEL EXPLORES SEXUAL IDENTITY AND YOUTH CULTURE IN GREENLAND Niviaq Korneliussen explodes onto the literary scene with HOMO Sapienne, a novel focusing on youth culture in the capital of Greenland, Nuuk, and the problems around sexuality, violence, alcohol and child abuse faced by young people there – as well as their own national identity.

The phrase ‘Greenlandic literature’ perhaps conjures up lyrical evocations of the vast island’s stunning Arctic vistas. But not when it’s written by Niviaq Korneliussen. witness to the conflicting emotions many young Greenlanders harbour about their homeland and their parents – the violence, the booze and the intolerance. HOMO Sapienne clashes with the official narrative of a young nation with proud traditions. It is a fictional call to arms and an indictment, encapsulating something crucially important about the exposed and extreme position – geographically, socially and sexually – in which young people in Greenland find themselves.

INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAMME Support may be provided to foreign publishers, heads of festivals and the like who want to acquire an insight into contemporary Danish literature and visit Danish publishers, festivals ect., to strengthen networks and dialogue between the Danish and international literary partners. There is no application deadline, and applications will be processed as quickly as practicable.

Support is provided to foreign publishing houses that publish works translated from Danish. Support is provided for works of fiction, general works of non-fiction, comics/graphic novels, and children’s literature translated by professional translators. There are three annual application deadlines.

The fund is open to nordic publishers wishing to publish a work translated from Danish to a nordic language. Support for translations into Danish must be sought from within the country in which the respective work was originally published. The funds for Nordic translations are distributed on behalf of Nordic Culture Point’s Culture and Art Programme under the Nordic Council of Ministers. There are three annual application deadlines.

Support may be provided to defray travel and hotel expenses in connection with a Danish author’s / illustrator’s participation in literary festivals, readings and publication events abroad, if there is a formal invitation. Support may be provided to foreign authors travelling to Denmark on the same basis. In addition, foreign translators of Danish literature may apply for support to defray travel expenses in connection with shorter stays in Denmark. Professional translators may apply for travel grants in connection with specific translation projects as well as for supplemental linguistic and cultural training. There is no application deadline, and applications will be processed as quickly as practicable.

Subsidies for literary events and marketing Danish literature abroad. Applications for subsidies are accepted from foreign publishers, diplomatic representations abroad, cultural institutions and others who wish to promote and increase knowledge about Danish literature outside Denmark. There are three annual application deadlines.

GENERAL FUND Grants to foreign publishers publishing Danish literature abroad. In a pilot project, the Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Literary Project Funding has earmarked special funds to cover the cost of printing and production for foreign publishers wishing to publish Danish illustrated children’s books in translation. Publishers can apply for a set grant of 1,000 euros. There are two annual application deadlines.
