As brothers growing up in Vermont, we spent much of our free time playing in the woods, building forts, hiking, canoeing, camping, and skiing; usually with the many family dogs we had over the years. Our adventures with our pups were part of our best memories. In fact, Kitter’s beloved Plott Hound, Zelda, really spurred the creation of Kurgo. Zelda had a mind of her own and often tried to nudge her way into the front seat on car trips. On one trip, a short stop threw her to the floor where she ended up wrapped around the car pedals. This inspired Kurgo’s first product, the Backseat Barrier™. Now she was safe in the backseat, and we were safe in the front. We designed the Backseat Barrier – like all Kurgo products – because we saw a need. Our parents had a small apparel manufacturing and retail business and they taught us the value of good design and an insistence on quality. That’s why we craft products that are long on usefulness and quality, and short on frivolity. So when you see a dog wearing a coat with a Kurgo logo on it, you can rest assured it’s cold outside. Today, people see dogs as part of the family and are increasingly bringing their pup along wherever they go, whether it’s a week-long vacation or just a trip to the store. There’s a real role for gear that makes the trip safer and more enjoyable. In this Kurgo Gear Guide, we hope to inspire you with our own experiences and the products we designed to make them easier and more fun. Our dogs continue to be a central part of our lives as our families and our business grows. Zelda is gone now, but she still lives on as the model for our logo. We have new family dogs – Baxter, Garp and Rocket – that inspire us every day. And, at its heart, that’s what Kurgo is all about: Innovating great products that help people and their dogs explore the world together.

Kurgo is founded by two brothers working out of a broom closet at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Kurgo showed initial Tire Tote® at SEMA and applied for patents.

They have been dynamically or sled tested using the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety (FMVSS) 213 standards used for child restraint systems. Each product will individually indicate up to which weight the product has been tested.

Helping Animals After Disaster Dogs are amazing. They are our confidants, our best friends and our motivators. They are capable of aiding the disabled and providing comfort to those in need. Most of us would do anything for them in return. But during times of disaster, natural or man-made, dogs along with other animals can easily find themselves injured and displaced. As we have seen through events such as the Oklahoma tornados and devastating West Coast fires, amidst the chaos many aid organizations come together to help those animals affected; we believe there is still more that can be done. The Kurgo Foundation was formed to support non-profits assisting animals in the wake of disaster. Serving as a central information and coordination resource, we identify non-profits in need during a specific disaster and collect the funds and items needed most. Through our extensive network of animal-lovers, we coordinate donations and provide much needed public information on how to help, ensuring the most resources get to the right organizations as quickly as possible.
