Our story...

As brothers growing up in Vermont we spent much of our free time exploring the woods, hiking, canoeing, camping, and skiing; usually with the many family dogs we had over the years. Our adventures with our dogs are part of our best memories. In fact, Kitter’s Plott Hound, Zelda, spurred the creation of Kurgo. On car trips, Zelda often tried to nudge her way into the front seat. On one trip, a short stop threw her to the floor where she ended up tangled in the car pedals. This inspired Kurgo’s first product, the Backseat Barrier™. Now she’d be safe in the backseat, and we’d be safe in the front. We designed the Backseat Barrier – like all Kurgo products – because we saw a need. That’s why we craft products that are long on usefulness and quality, and short on frivolity. In this Gear Guide, we hope our story and products inspire you to hit the road with your dog and explore the outdoors. Travel Safety Tips It’s no secret that we love to travel with our dogs and getting out with your dog is a great way to be active and have fun, but it’s important be safe when you do. Whether it’s just driving around town or headed out on a road trip, we’ve put together some helpful safety tips to make sure you get there safe. Always have a collar, leash and ID tag. Sometimes in strange or busy environments, dogs can be easily frightened and run off making them difficult to find. Making sure that your dog is properly restrained with a leash and collar makes this situation a non-event. If your dog does get away, having an up-to-date ID tag makes it easy for your dog to be identified and returned. Keep the front seats a human-only zone. Distracted driving causes accidents and nearly 30% of drivers admit to being distracted by their dog while driving. Keeping your dog in the back seat keeps you distraction-free when traveling.

Restrain or secure? There are plenty of ways to keep your dog safe in the backseat. The main choice you need to make is do you want to simply restrain your dog from roaming around the car or do you want to secure them completely with a crash-tested car safety harness? Accidents happen. Be prepared. You never know when an emergency will happen. Having a first aid kit available will keep you prepared should something come up. It’s a good idea to have your vet’s name and number in the first aid kit as well. Make your dog comfortable. Make sure you pack the essentials for your dog especially on a long trip, which include: • Water and food bowls • Enough food for the amount of time you will be away • Plenty of water to keep him hydrated • Treats for good behavior • A familiar or favorite toy • A travel bed to keep him comfortable

Kurgo Foundation Animal Disaster RelIEf

Dogs are amazing. They are our confidants, our best friends and our motivators. They are capable of aiding the disabled and providing comfort to those in need. Most of us would do anything for them in return. But during times of disaster, natural or man-made, dogs along with other animals can easily find themselves injured and displaced. As we have seen through events such as the Oklahoma tornados and devastating West Coast fires, amidst the chaos many aid organizations come together to help those animals affected; we believe there is still more that can be done. The Kurgo Foundation was formed to support non-profits assisting animals in the wake of disaster. Serving as a central information and coordination resource, we identify non-profits in need during a specific disaster and collect the funds and items needed most.

Kurgo donates 2% of profits from all Kurgo product sales.

Sizing - How to measure a dog for the right fit Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, so to ensure that your dog’s gear fits properly, we recommend getting your dog’s measurements. 1 3

There are three measurements you need when fitting your dog: 1. Upper Neck (for collars and bandanas). Wrap a tape measure around the upper part of your dog’s neck. 2. Lower Neck (for coats and harnesses). Wrap a tape measure around the thickest part of your dog’s neck. It should be a bit lower than where their collar usually sits. 3. Chest. Wrap a tape measure around the thickest part of your dog’s torso. This is usually right behind the dog’s front legs.

If your dog’s measurements fall in between two sizes, it’s better to size up to ensure that they are comfortable.
