You will be going on a tour through various art movements of the world. Starting from the Arts and Crafts Movement and the PreRaphaelite Brotherhood of the 1800s until Constructivism. The exhibit covers painting, films, sculpture and other art mediums of the time. Here is some information on the artists you would encounter throughout your journey. You will notice how hairstyles and facial hair of the artists of the time have been given emphasis. For an enthusiast like yourself, it would be very easy to relate the works to the artist. William Hunt (1827-1910)
One of the founders of the Pre- Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB), William Holman Hunt is famous for his attention to detail. Most of his works are influenced by the writings of John Ruskin. Famous paintings include ‘The Flight of Madeleine and Porphyro during the Drunkenness attending the Revelry’ and ‘The Lady of Shalott’.

William Morris (1834-1896)
William Morris was an artist, writer, and textile designer and was a major figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement that started in Britain. He founded the Kelmscott press that published limited edition books. His famous works are (poem)‘The Earthly Paradise’ and (painting) ‘La belle Iseult’.

Dante Rossetti (1828-1882)
Rossetti was the co-founder of the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood. Their approach was to have very complex compositions and intense colours. His works, particularly had a high amount of sensuality in them. His famous works include ‘Proserpine’ and ‘The Girlhood of Mary Virgin’.

Man Ray (1890-1976)
Man Ray was an illustrator by profession but was also an experimental photographer. He came up with the photography technique of Solarization by inversing Blacks and Whites. He also took photograms of daily objects and termed them ‘Rayographs’. According to him, they were pure forms of Dadaism.

Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939)
Mucha was a Czechoslovakian decorative artist who often showed beautiful blonde women and lush flowers in his paintings. His style came to be called as Art Nouveau. His famous works are ‘Dance’ and poster for a play called ‘Gismonda’.

Louis Le Prince (1841-1890)
The “Father of Cinematography” filmed the first moving picture. He shot scenes on Eastman’s paper film. But he disappeared mysteriously before he could have a public demonstration of his invention and Thomas Edison took credit for his efforts. His initial films were ‘Roundhay Garden Scene’ and ‘Leeds Bridge Traffic Scene’.

John Ruskin (1819-1900)
John Ruskin was a writer, an art critic, a social thinker and a philanthropist. He influenced most happenings of the Arts and Crafts Movement and the Pre- Raphaelite Brotherhood. People from diverse fields felt Ruskin’s influence in their work.

Emile Cohl (1857-1938)
Emile Cohl is called the “Father of animated cartoon”. He was a French caricaturist who discovered the puppet theatre and political caricature. He also made the first hand drawn stop motion animation film called ‘Fantasmagorie’. His other famous work is ‘The Neo-Impressionistic Painter’.

Salvador Dali (1904-1989)
Salvador Dali was famous for experimenting with Cubism and with Dadaism. He didnt have a lot of exposure to cubist art as there were no Cubists around him at the time. He had a flamboyant moustache which became the icon of his identity. His famous works include ‘The Persistence of Memory’ and his Cubist self portrait.

Alexander Rodchenko (1891-1956)
He was among the founders of Constructivism. Rodchenko was a sculptor, photographer, graphic designer and a painter. His work was very mych influenced on Cubism and Russian Futurism. His propoganda posters are great examples of Constructivist art.

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944)
He was a Dutch painter who contributed in neoplasticism. He developed a style with a white background and a grid of black lines. The paintings only have the three primary colours and blacks in them. He kept making minor changes to the paintings and added to his style. One suck ork is ‘Composition with Yellow, Blue, and Red’.

Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930)
Vladimir Mayakovsky was a Russian actor and a poet and he was the representative for Russian Futurism. Working for the Russian State Telegraph Agency, Mayakovsky created satirical posters. Famous works are ‘Agitprop’ and ‘A Cloud in Trousers’.
