There is something special about Gotland. An island full of contrasts that invites you to experience awe-inspiring nature where each area is different from the next. From the wild and windswept north, through Visby’s cultural heritage and pulse to blooming meadows and open landscapes in the south. The people of Gotland can be just as fascinating as the island itself. And what’s better than getting to know a place through the people who know it best. Let them guide you through attractions, exciting culinary experiences and their favourite places. Let them help you experience different days in Gotland...

Close to the coast

Gotland is the island of sun, and year after year, it tops the list of sunny places in Sweden. The island offers close to 800 kilometres of unbroken horizon where fine sand beaches meet small hidden swimming alcoves, limestone quarries shimmering with turquoise water and beautiful pebble beaches. Find your favourite beach and lounge the day away or get your adrenaline pumping with some high-speed kite surfing. Scale cliffs, explore caves or gallop along the water's edge on a deserted beach.

VIEW. KrĂśnet restaurant in Visby centre.

A teeming cultural heritage Few cities have such a unique combination of old and new as Visby. Surrounded by the well-preserved 13th century city wall, this former Hanseatic city offers a cultural heritage, beautiful cloister ruins and inviting cobblestone alleys. But also world-class culinary experiences, after-beach parties, night clubs that boast the sea as their backdrop and concerts and gigs in mighty stone vaults. Visby is teeming, and it’s up to you if you want to take a break or party, in the past or the present.

11

Eventful

Tofta is one of Sweden's most beautiful beaches. During the summer, this 3 km long sandy beach is amazingly popular. Here you’ll find great swimming holes, lively beaches, exciting activities, a variety of restaurants and accommodations and the Beach Club. Just 14 minutes south of Visby.

SURFLOGIET

In Gotland's very own surf centre in Tofta, you can try your hand at a number of water sports. Such as the latest trend from Hawaii, stand up paddle boarding, where you glide along the water on board and paddle. The kids can try out surf sports at Kids Summer Surf. If you are an adrenaline seeker, Surflogiet’s instructors work every day to give kite surfing lessons on Gotland's unique coast. As the sun nears the horizon, you will find people from all over the village gathering to enjoy a glass of wine and a bite to eat along the Baltic’s sparkling waves. Here, you have the best seat in the house for enjoying the beautiful sunset at the café's outdoor seating in the sand.

12

TOFTA BEACH CLUB

In Tofta, you will find Gotland’s largest After Beach party. Its special mix of age groups and beach environment makes for an exuberant day in a magical Gotland environment. On sunny days, you can listen to live music and dance barefoot in the sand. Here you can enjoy the pool, eat a nice meal and meet new people. The sea may be wonderful, but nothing beats an ice cream and cold drink in a comfortable sun recliner by the solar and electrically heated pool. And you won’t want to miss all the summer’s themed events and performances.

STRANDBAREN

Charge your batteries on sunny days at popular Tofta Strand. Situated perfectly just 10 metres from the water's edge is one of Sweden’s best beach bars. Here, you will find good food, cold drinks, a relaxed atmosphere and unbeatable sunsets. And should you desire, you can rent this beautiful venue for a celebration of your own. A place you just don’t want to miss!

Peter Jihde:

“My favourite sport” Challenge your friends to a game of Peter Jihde’s favourite sport, paddle tennis, on one of the three newly built outdoor courts in Tofta – actually, the only courts in Gotland. – Gotland is the island with everything, and now that they have finally built paddle courts in Tofta, the island is complete for me, Peter explains and then continues, – It’s the best sport in the world. It is my conviction that anyone in the world, regardless of experience in ball sports, can play paddle tennis. It’s simple and fun. Paddle tennis is much like beach tennis, but on a court.

It’s played at a good speed, the ball is soft and the rackets are easy to handle. It's also a very social sport since you are in close proximity to your partner and your opponents. Wonderfully situated close to the sea and to Tofta Beach Club, the three new paddle tennis courts have great potential. – So I know a lot of people are going to be happy. It gives them yet another reason to visit the world's best island. I'm definitely going to play a gig there this summer, Peter Jihde concludes.

Surfing Life of

Classe Johansson and his family chose Gotland over Stockholm. Not an obvious choice, but a simple one. Here, they've found their place in the world, their existence, and never for a second regretted the move. The nature, sea and agreeable tempo make life on the island peaceful and fulfilling. More time for family and interests. And more time for surfing!

Classe Johansson and family Classe, age 51, runs SjälsÜ Bageri, a bakery, with his partner Fredrik Ekman and Fredrik's wife Sofia Anna, age 46, night nurse at Visby Hospital Greta, age 12 and Hedda, age 9 The family lives in Brissund, approx. 10 km north of Visby, with their dog Freddie and their horses Kopar and Frecka

14

#gotlanddifferentdays

The Johansson family moved to Gotland seven years ago. Dad Classe, mum Anna and daughters Greta (age 12) and Hedda (age 9). And since moving, there are three new additions to the family: two horses and a dog. Their house in Brissund, right on the sea, is their own little piece of paradise and they couldn’t dream of a better place to live. When asked to describe what he appreciates most about Gotland, Classe thinks long and hard. And in spite of his contemplation, he answers, – Everything! But then he continues, – Being close to nature and the sea. A slower tem po. As a family, we can live the kind of life that we wouldn’t be able to in a city. Gotland allows us more time for family and our interests. We have horses and a dog, and it’s not in the least bit inconvenient. Everyone in the family agrees that spring and autumn are the best seasons. They often have the beaches to themselves and can take walks, ride their horses and let the dog roam free. Still, they unan imously agree that there’s something special about summer in Gotland, such as all the visitors that come to enjoy the island. In Classe’s opinion, the mix of people is fantastic. – Summertime Gotlanders, partying kids, families with young children, foreign tourists, busloads of senior citizens – all enjoying what the island has to offer, each with their own favourites! Neither Classe nor Anna had any direct con nection to the island, yet the decision to move to Gotland was an easy one. After two stints of living in Costa Rica, both had difficulty adjusting to life in the big city upon moving back. They longed for another lifestyle. Quieter. Simpler.

DAUGHTER GRETA hits the waves on Tofta strand.

CLASSE JOHANSSON and his daughter Hedda.

“Islands isolate you a bit. Fortunately.” – When we explored the alternatives in Sweden, Gotland ended up being the obvious choice. In our eyes, the island has everything we were looking for: freedom, enchanting nature and a more pleasant tempo. And once we made the decision, we felt even better knowing we could offer our children this kind of upbringing. If you happen to love surfing and would prefer not to move abroad, Gotland is a great alternative. Classe is an inveterate surfer whose favourite time of year is autumn. The storms at this time of year provide fantastic waves and he spends much of his time on his board. He used to travel the globe to find the best surfing, but since they moved to Gotland he’s had plenty of good surfing and finds himself travelling less often.

– Gotland gives the sensation of eternal vacation and freedom, he says. His daughters, Hedda and Greta, have practi cally grown up with surfboards under their feet, and during the summer months they often squeeze into their wet suits and tackle the waves. But their equestrian interests have also grown strong, not least for Greta who rides and spends time in the stables every day of the year. Anna once again mentions how simple life is here. The family mostly moves between their home, the stables, the beach and work, and the children have been able to enjoy freedom from an early age. – It feels safe to live on an island, she says. It iso lates us a bit from the rest of the world. Fortunately... " 16

The family's best Gotland tips:

#1

SJÄLSÖ BAGERI

Since Classe runs the bakery, it's only natural that we spend a lot of time there. Bread is baked in the wood fired stone oven, delicious sandwiches with various fillings are served at breakfast and lunch and wonderfully moist buns can be enjoyed at coffee time. The view of Själsö Harbour is an added bonus! Själsö Bageri is located about10 km north of Visby, along road 149.

HORSE RIDING ON FÅRÖ

#2

On Fårös Islandshästars ponies, you can experience amazing rides and unrivalled natural experiences. It's magical to enjoy the beautiful lighting and the sunset on horseback! More info at www.faroislandshastar.se

#3

FORNSALEN

Here, you’ll find something for everyone. We like to take visitors here, especially on rainy days. You can go on a Gotland history learning adventure through a number of exhibits. Fornsalen - Gotlands museum is located on Strandgatan in Visby.

BRISSUND

#4

We think Brissund Beach, with its fishing hamlets, is a magical place! Here, we often ride horses, preferably in the evening when the sun has begun to set. Or take a long walk with the dog. Brissund is located about 15 km north of Visby.

#5

PAVILJONGSPLAN

Every day at 8.30 a.m., playful dogs and their owners gather at Paviljongsplan to play freely. These play dates were worth their weight in gold when Freddie was a puppy, but now he’s totally uninterested in other dogs! Paviljongsplan in located right next to the Botanical Garden in Visby city center.

THE ISLAND'S MARKETS

In autumn we love to travel around to the island's many markets. One of our favourites is the Gotland harvest festival in Roma, where there is a lot to look at and a bunch of activities we can all try. So much fun! More info about the markets is published on www.gotland.net.

@lisastrannesten

Gotland from another

perspective

Lisa Strannesten was invited to Gotland by her current partner Mats after just a few months of dating. That was 15 years ago. When it was time to move back to Sweden after a few years abroad, the choice was a simple one. The closeness to the sea, calm atmosphere and beautiful surroundings on the island make the quality of life hard to beat, and one they can’t find anywhere else. For Lisa, Gotland is a very special love story of its own. – I think that almost everyone remem bers the first time they got off the boat or plane and got to experience this fantastic island for the first time, she says. Now, Lisa has both a company and a family here on Gotland. And even if the honeymoon is over, it is nonetheless an honour to call this beautiful and special island her home. How many people can say that they get to walk through cosy cobble stone alleys lined with prodigious roses each and every day on their way to work? Or drive on white limestone roads through barren landscapes passing by lamb pastures. Not to mention the fields of poppies and viper's bugloss in the roadside ditches...

Summer is hands-down Lisa’s favour ite time of year. Though she’s clear that she has a constant love for the island, regardless of season, she absolutely blos soms in the summer. And it would take a lot to get her to leave. – During the summer, we rarely leave the island, she chuckles. Though when peak season is over and autumn starts to descend, we are quick to book at trip to prolong summer and gather inspiration for the next season! Lisa works as a freelance stylist with customers such as Chanel, Marie Claire, Louis Vuitton and Estee Lauder. She is most recently known for her fashion and make-up book Transformation, in which she has done all the styling. She is also the Creative Director for her partner 19

Mats and his restaurants Italienaren, Vinäger and Josbaren, where she is re sponsible for all interior decorating and social media. So it’s not all that strange that Lisa puts her camera to good use. Mostly, to capture the moment and memories. But she also says she does it to show the best sides of Gotland so that more and more people can discover the island from her perspective. She does this primarily through her popular blog/web magazine A Magazine About, which she runs together with Gotlandian Jonathan Ingman, and her inspirational Instagram account which is chock full of delightful Gotland scenery. She has selected a few of her favourites to share with you, the read er, so you can discover Lisa’s Gotland!

VINÄGER AND ITALIENAREN It would be strange if I didn’t include these two on my list of Visby favourites since this is where you find me almost daily, especially in the summer. Vinäger was the first place I visited and fell head over heels in love with when I came to Visby 15 years ago. Today we are fortunate enough to own this beautiful oasis. When we were given the opportunity a couple of years ago to open yet another restaurant, it was only natural that we would put Italian cuisine on the menu in this old alley from the Middle Ages. At Italienaren, we combine Italian favourites with Gotland’s staples in a stunning environment!

“I could write an entire book about all the great places in Gotland, but let me present a few of my favourites."

THE BOTANICAL GARDEN Walking through this beautiful place, in the middle of Visby, and seeing how the seasons change through the plants is a luxury in everyday life that I really appreciate. The path along the beach runs past it, so you can walk along the sea on the way back. And adjacent to that is Visby’s most charming café, Gula Huset. Here, you can sit in the small lounge and drink coffee from delicate, flowery china cups as the owner bakes buns in the little kitchen, while running out to top up the guests’ coffee cups and chat a bit.

AKANTUS This is where I shop for interior decorating items and children's toys. It’s nearly impossible to go into Akantus and come out empty-handed. They have a good mix of local design, antiques and the latest trends you just saw on Instagram. I think they’re really good at hand-picking their assortment and finding things that you yearn to own. Straight across the street is also a real gem, namely "Ett rum för resande". Nice lunches and snacks are served here. I love sitting outside in the small square and watching people crossing the street.

20

BUNGENÄS When you walk through the sheep gate to Bungenäs limestone quarry, it’s like entering a different world. Here, there are no cars allowed, but you can walk or borrow a bike to get around the old military grounds. The Själsö Arkitekter transformed the old bunkers and barracks into residences, the soldiers’ mess hall into a restaurant and the beautiful aged limestone barn with its big brick ovens into a restaurant and art gallery. On our way to Bungenäs, we usually stop at Prima Gård. Here we take a coffee in the garden, say hi to the rooster in the hen run, buy organic delicacies, beautiful porcelain and handicrafts made on the farm.

LIMESTONE QUARRIES

HABLINGO CREPERIE

On Gotland, there are a number of old limestone quarries that have filled with water. Some of them have the turquoise water of a pool. As I don’t like swimming in cold water and think that the sea is a bit too cold early in the season, the limestone quarries with their somewhat warmer temperatures are the perfect place. It’s an exciting challenge to find “your very own” quarry to which you can bring a picnic lunch and sunbathe the day away without running into anyone else. If you’re not up for hunting around the island, there’s always the Blue Lagoon, which is the most renowned quarry on the island and one of the best places to swim, especially if you have children.

On rainy summer days, I go to Djupvik for lunch and then on to Hablingo Creperie to enjoy a dessert crepe (the one with apples, cinnamon and a scoop of ice cream!) It's super cosy to sit in one of the old cow boxes with lit candles while the rain patters outside. Before leaving, I always buy one of Åsa Lindström’s pretty mugs from the shop next door. Just five minutes away is Verdus Veranda – a beautiful and very special garden and furnishings shop. Here, I buy planting pots and porcelain and dream of one day having such a beautiful garden myself.

SURFLOGIET Last summer, three different parties on Tofta Strand put their resources together and started Surflogiet - a place that Gotland has certainly been lacking in the past. You can take surfing lessons, rent surf boards, skate and enjoy a meal, with lots of vegan and vegetarian alternatives. Some evenings, they have live music. It's magical to sit there and watch the sun set over the water! In addition, almost all the materials they use can be thrown in the compost. That's cool in itself!

HOTEL STELOR

DJUPVIK RESORT

When I need a break from Visby during our most hectic weeks, I flee to Västergarn and hang out at Hotel Stelor with Mysan and Linus. I have two young children, and it's perfect to be able to let them run around on the big lawn where they can play and watch the sheep and horses in the field while I enjoy a cup of coffee in one of the outdoor recliners. It’s also a good place to have a nice lunch or dinner with friends. Some of Sweden’s best artists have concerts in the barn - these concerts are usually the pinnacle of summer.

Until we became owners of Vinäger, I would work many summers at Djupvik. I loved working there and now I happily spend my days off in the delightful, special environment created by Jörgen and Maria on the old dance floor. I usually go there for a late lunch and enjoy the tranquillity that is to be had out there. If I want to go all out, I’ll stay a night at the hotel and take a long walk or bike ride along the lovely, barren Eksta coast. A tip - go there in the autumn. It’s magical when the leaves change colour.

The organic operations with farm tavern, shop and cultivation are a mere seven kilometres from Visby. An oasis combining the tranquillity of the countryside with the closeness to the town. This is what makes Lilla Bjers a real Gotland gem.

An organic oasis 2017 marked the 20-year anniversary of Lilla Bjers (the little mountain in Gotlandish) under the leader ship of Margareta and Göran Hoas. Operations have always been organic, but in 2001, the farm was offi cially KRAV certified. In 2012, the farm tavern was opened, a sort of starting point for the Hoas family. Today, over 200 different crops are grown on the farm. Some of them come back year after year, such as strawberries, potatoes and asparagus, while others they plant for fun or to experiment. – We cheat a bit with our lemons, but last year we had a crop of about 15 lemons. Our record is 100, says Göran and laughs. The soil contributes to the quality of everything that grows on the farm. – All our vegetables have a light, fresh and deli cious flavour. We can take some of the credit, but it's really the soil that does it, says Göran while Marga reta adds. – They also get to grow at their own speed, with out being forced by us. 24

THE HOAS FAMILY Margareta Hoas, age 53, partner Lilla Bjers Göran Hoas, age 60, partner Lilla Bjers Elin Hoas, age 20, daughter, vegetable grower Einar Hoas, age 18, son, student who works at the farm on breaks Agnes Hoas, age 15, daughter, student who works at the farm on breaks

THE FARM is around 38 acres, of which, 12 acres of vegetables, surrounded by 125 acres of forest.

“Our operations have always been organic” In a lot of ways, Lilla Bjers is a year round carou sel, with cultivation and the little farm shop that's open throughout the year. In the summer, exciting dishes made from basic ingredients are served, and when December rolls around, lunch and dinner take on the tastes and scents of Christmas as Christmas trees are sold on the farm. What’s the thought behind your restaurant’s menu selections and flavours? – The menu varies throughout the year depending on which vegetables are best at the time, Margareta explains. Generally, they serve three or five course meals in the evenings. During the day, they serve a lunch based on the day's harvest. Their concept is to only serve food that is 100% organic and grown on the premises – a sort of unpretentious fine dining. Guests are welcome to take a stroll through the grounds where the crops are grown, to then sit in the restaurant and enjoy the harvest. – It's a great challenge for our chefs to adhere to our concept, says Margareta. 25

– But it also gives them great pleasure, Göran adds. Our chefs have a lot of tricks up their sleeves, such as the dessert foam they invented from potato peels, which tastes like vanilla ice cream. Most importantly, what is presented on your plate is “real food”. Wines from organically certified vineyards in France and Italy are paired and served with the food. Lilla Bjers enjoys continuous development. Last year, the concept Green Table, inspired by Chef ’s Table, was introduced. Guests are seated at a table in the greenhouse. – Our concept includes Margareta or me greeting our guests with a drink and guiding them around as we introduce who we are and what we do. Then they are served a three-course meal that they eat among growing vegetables, Göran explains. This year-round gem, biking distance from Visby, is surrounded by greenery and a beautiful farm envi ronment. Here, you are invited by the Hoas family and their staff to an organic culinary experience in Gotland’s fairytale nature. "

The winds of change are blowing at Coop. Centrally and locally – but perhaps most at Coop Gotland. And they are positive winds. Meet madcaps Wahlgren and Stålhammar, who see the stores as meeting places, where growing locally and organically, and vinyl records are a matter of course.

“WELCOME TO THE BEST STORES IN THE WORLD!”* an -Joh * ) According to Carl

an

d

SHOP IN YOUR OWN STORE I manage to discover in our interview, which can best be described as a meeting with Chip and Dale, that Coop Gotland has nine stores on the island, from Slite in the north to Hemse in the south, Klinte hamn in the west and Ljugarn in the east. Both talk non-stop on the heels of each other and the energy in the room is almost tangible. Their will is strong, and they have many ideas, that much I can see. Both Carl-Johan Stålhammar and Markus Wahlgren are new faces at Coop. In part to Coop as a whole, but on the island and to Coop Forum, where they and their staff strive to make the delica tessen and their vinyl record corner the best on the island. They only sell “good” music – just like their food. They want to communicate that Coop is a step above the rest and that the idea of the cooperative is a timely one. – We're starting to get used to Uber, Airbnb and other examples of today’s sharing economy. Many believe it's a new concept – but this has existed at Coop for 150 years, says Carl-Johan Stålhammar, CEO of Coop Gotland. – The idea behind a sharing economy is that you co-own the store you shop in, thereby buying from yourself. It's an unbeatable concept, Markus Wahl gren adds. The ”coopärcoolt” (Coop is cool) hashtag has seriously begun to circulate on Gotland. So what’s so cool about Coop? – Coop Gotland is really good at purchasing organic, locally grown produce and KRAV-certified products. Actually, we’re among the best in Swe den. To that winning recipe, we add vinyl records, pleasant co-workers and crazy antics. This can only be viewed as a good sign, answers Carl-Johan and continues, barely drawing breath,

– Because Coop prioritizes being team players, it's very important to bring Gotland's producers into the limelight. It feels right. And it's the same thing with our sharing economy foundation. All profits are reinvested in our members or in the stores. Our staff at Coop tend to be young and highly engaged. They care about organics and locally grown produce. Organics, producing locally and quality permeate all our operations. And it’s also important for me, super market manager, to show how impor tant our customers are,” says Markus. – We even have a Vegan Corner now, where we sell solely vegan food, Carl-Johan adds. The catchphrase of Coop Forum's delicatessen is fantastic variety, treatment and experience. – If you're a regular customer to the delicatessen, you can have a song written for you by Martin Kris tensson (record company head of Coop Records), which he'll play on his banjo or guitar, depending on his mood, Carl-Johan tells. He stresses that grocery shopping should be an experience. Are cooperatives and locally grown produce of even more importance when you live on an island? – Yes, there’s definitely pride in it, in Carl-Johan's opinion. In addition, it's important that Coop cover all of Gotland, that everyone feels included. The key values Coop works under are to be best in organics and locally grown produce. And vinyl records. – At Coop, it’s Gotland’s producers who dictate how we sell our products. That's what makes us stand out from the competition, Markus stresses. – Still, it's our customers that are our focus. If every visit to Coop results in a smile and an experi ence, we've come a long way, says Carl-Johan. – They come in as customers and leave as friends, Markus adds. "

sea-side flora or take a load off at a café. Ljugarn’s harbour and the old nearby fishing village Vitvär are also worth a visit. If you’re more of the active type, you’ll find cycling and running opportunities on winding roads, or why not play a round on Ljugarn Golf Club’s nine hole course or tennis on one of the area's newly renovated outdoor courts. There are also lots of possibilities along the coast to kite surf or windsurf. " 28

THIS BEAUTIFUL STONE HOUSE anno 1910 in Alskog was bought by Elsa Billgren and her family in 2017.

Road trip with

Elsa Billgren The unlimited excursions, the lovely nature, the weather, the people and the great food... This list of what the Billgren/de Wolfe family love the most about Gotland goes on and on. Their longing to spend more time on the island led them to buy their own house, perfect for summer vacations or spring and autumn visits.

Elsa Billgren is a program anchor, blogger and vintage entrepreneur. She has also been residing in Gotland part-time for the past year. Since the family has not moved permanently, but is mostly here in the summer, they can easily be categorised as “summer Gotlanders”. But Elsa is very particular about the house being a “summer, spring and autumn house”, so that must mean they are “summer, spring and autumn residents”, no? – For the last five years, life has felt incomplete if I haven’t been in Gotland for one to five weeks in the summer, Elsa tells us. – When our longing to spend more time here got to be too much last spring, we bought our very own Gotland house in beautiful Alskog. – Now we can relax and recharge in our own place. We can putter around and pour all our love into the house. And it’s not just any house either, but perhaps the most beautiful stone house from 1910 I ever laid eyes on. Elsa tells of how they longed to be close to nature but to not be too secluded. Both she and her hus band Pontus love people and since many of their

close friends have houses nearby, the house in Alskog was perfect. – In Gotland, there's always something fun to do with people. Not least, the excursions. Wherever you go, there are fantastic places to discover. Elsa continues, – We live pretty close to När, so we go there often. We park the car and meet the wind head on on the barren and oh so beautiful beaches. Other days, we are happy to go to Bungenäs and bike around or to go down to Sudret and have a cup of coffee at Körs bärsgården. But most often times, we go where the flea market signs point, she says with a laugh. It is no secret that Elsa is something of a vintage expert. But she is also passionate about locally grown, organic produce. – And I really love the sustainability mindset and the feeling that nothing comes to, or leaves, the island unnecessarily, she explains, and continues, – Here in Gotland, there is a lot of history, much of which has been allowed to live on. Which makes the selection at flea markets absolutely fantastic. You can make some really good deals, and most things are old. Just the way I want it, Elsa concludes. " 34

IN ELSA'S OPINION the history of Gotland contributes to the fabulous flea market selection. Here, bargains are being made at Fint & Fult.

Just outside Visby is the cat shelter 9 Liv, which is also a flea market. Good chance of finding bargains!

FINT & FULT

A wonderful barn in Hemse filled to the rafters with quality vintage and inspiration. This is where I find those luxurious old countryside details that make a room special. Lions has flea markets every year in Gotland. Check out svenskaloppisar.se to see when and where.

STATIONSHUSET

A motley flea market in Havdhem with loads of things, not for those who shy away from rooting around for bargains!

Don’t miss this vintage gem, also selling contemporary goods, in Fårösund when you’re in the north!

Other favourites THE LIMESTONE QUARRIES IN KYLLAJ

A given stop if you're exploring up north! Our favourite swimming hole, though it's not very child-friendly...

KÖRSBÄRSGÅRDEN

An excursion down to Sudret for lunch or coffee at Körsbärsgården is a must each summer! Cosy and child-friendly. A tip if you are travelling with a companion – order a soup and a buffet, and share. That way, you get a bit of everything!

LILLA BJERS

Lilla Bjers is not only cosy, but they serve delicious, KRAV certified food. Everything at Lilla Bjers is good, but their chocolate pastries are unbeatable! I asked them for the recipe, and got it!

Advice from the expert:

FIND FLEA MARKET BARGAINS

Make sure you're the first one at the market when they open! Visit all the big flea markets and dare to root around in the ones that feel a bit “eh”. You can often find good things in the mess. They often just need a clean-up!

BEST FLEA MARKET TRICK

Keep track of the scheduled flea markets, such as the ones Lions arranges. Gather your bargains and leave them with a trusted person. Then you give the salesperson a price you're willing to pay for it all and hope for the best!

Name Sanna Lennartsdotter Dackmo Age 30 Family Single. Mum Pia and Dad Lennart, brother Pontus and dog Rolex Occupation Runs the family company Wisby Ur & Guld, Jewellery designer, DJ, Board member of Företagarna Gotland, etc. Residence Apartment on Adelsgatan in the centre of Visby, with a view over rooftops and the sea

@bylennartsdotter

SANNA’S APARTMENT on Adelsgatan has a view of rooftops in central Visby.

Sanna Lennartsdotter Dackmo went all in for a career in New York only to find that it was in Visby she belonged. After many successful years abroad, it was the contrasts that made the difference. On the island, she finds time, tranquillity and closeness to the sea – an unbeatable combination that allowed Sanna to create her own dream situation, in the middle of little old Visby! Her love of Gotland was always there. Nonetheless, Sanna decided to go abroad directly after graduation to gain experience and fulfil her dream of working in fashion and design. After stints in Austria and Spain, it was time for New York, where she got her degree and worked side-by-side with jewellery queen Efva Attling and eventually even with renowned Swedish clothing designer Johan Lindeberg. In retrospect, she sees that her years abroad were a lot about finding herself. When Sanna returned home to Gotland at the age of 28, she was close to depleted of all energy. – Then, I was in great need of more time, just as now, she explains. Here in Visby, there is no daily 39

commute, no waiting. Things can happen at once, if you want. Or the opposite; you’ve gained so much time that you can take time to do nothing. I have more time for family, friends, and not least, myself and my well-being, Sanna continues. – I usually say a bit jokingly that I tried to leave this island, but that I always end up coming back. She now works as a jewellery designer and runs the family business Wisby Ur & Guld and e-commerce site WUGO.se. She also does a lot on the side, from board work to DJing. – I travelled half the world, but ended up finding everything on the island! You have every possibility to create things, it’s a haven for creative people.

>>

Gotland is full of motivated small business owners, all of whom are happy to share their knowledge and experiences. It’s very unique, she states, and continues. – It also helps just about anyone who wants to live and make a living on Gotland, you can do your own thing. Sanna mentions how she created her own dream situation in Visby, both private and career-wise. – It’s so luxurious to wake up with the sea outside your window, she explains. And to be able to go to really nice restaurants that are open year round. In little Visby, in little ol’ Gotland. Most days, she barely goes outside the Visby City Wall, she reveals with a laugh. – I live and work on Adelsgatan, and in my time off I hang out with friends, most of whom also live in the city. Visby has it all; world-class food, a quick tempo in the summer, tranquillity in the off-season, historical buildings, the City Wall, close proximity to the sea, beautiful nature and a very particular lighting. "

H10 MARKET. An oasis on Hästgatan in central Visby with shopping, bar and café. The outdoor part of the restaurant is open long into the autumn.

“I travelled half the world, but ended up finding everything on the island.”

SURFERS. You can often find Sanna here, DJing. She and her compatriot Jonna make up the DJ duo Cheeky Chicks.

Sanna’s tips for visitors to Visby:

H10

A mini mall with modern and classic shopping, featuring international and Gotland designers. Bar & café, perfect for breakfast, meetings and lunch. Also has great vegan alternatives! Hästgatan 10, in the middle of the city.

SURFERS
Definitely my favourite restaurant in town (and I’m not alone). I’m here so often, it’s almost like a second living room. Perfect place for dinner or to hang out! Södra kyrkogatan in Visby.

ADELSGATAN

LINDGÅRDEN Another one of my favourites. The herring dish is a must, and take the opportunity to ask the operations manager/sommelier Frida for advice on what to drink! On a warm summers eve, the outdoor seating in the courtyard is one of the best places in Visby. Strandgatan in Visby.

STRAND PROMENADEN
Strandpromenaden is fabulous year round! Goes from the harbour all the way to Snäck. Here, you can walk as the sun sets, or during an autumn storm, when the wind threatens to tip you over. So cool! You’ll also find Sweden’s nicest outdoor gym along the way.

41

Difficult not to list Adelsgatan as one of my favou rites since I live and work here. But it really is a fantastic place, with beautiful buildings, cosy shops and a cool history! Start your day with coffee at Brödboden, genuine and cosy and always freshly baked goods.

GKF

I support local producers as much as I can. At GKF, many of Gotland’s craftsmen are represented and you will find everything from glass and porcelain to wool and clothing Don't miss two of my favourites: Jennie Olofsson, who runs the glass studio Big Pink, and designer Elena Berg Österdahl. Nice shop on Wallers plats.

The small town that has it all Medieval narrow streets. Excellent shopping. Wonderful restaurants. A vibrant night life. All year round. Welcome to Scandinavia’s favourite destination!*

*Average score at Trivago

Visby Centrum is a collaboration of companies in central Visby. Our network has the purpose to develop, advertise and arrange activities in the town centre. We have the best job in the world. We love our little city. 42

Shopping and crafts Gotland is an amazing place for crafts and shopping. The range of products is unique and often reflects the island in its design. On the following pages, we present a selection of these products. Welcome to stroll around Visby, or to discover all the shops, studios and shopping centres in the countryside. The goldsmith Annika Gustavsson is one of the islands many skilful craftsmen who you will find in a cultural heritage building on S:t Hansgatan in the middle of Visby centre, where she has been design ing, creating and displaying her jewellery for the last three years. You are met by an aromatic scent and soft ligh ting, and her display cases and paned glass wall to Annika’s forge have a Feng Shui feel. Her inspiration comes largely from Gotland’s nature, in which she grew up, as well as from Copen hagen's leisurely and trend-conscious environments, where she studied to be a goldsmith and her career got started. – I play my way with materials from nature. It's the barrenness and strong winds of our environment that appeal to me. I’m happy to make rough-hewn jewellery, not the highly polished type that’s more common in Sweden. 43

The jewellery Annika makes is usually about con trasts and high-quality. She does a lot of work with brushed gold, silver and oxidized silver. – It's such an attractive contrast to a shiny gem stone. I think it's the contrasts that enhances each of them and makes them dynamic. Earlier in life Annika worked in the world of fi nance, but after 12 years she decided to change direc tions and start in the exciting and creative occupation of being a goldsmith. – I much prefer the fun and pleasurable route through life than the strategic route. She has an eye for unique details, and as such, contributes to Gotland’s beautiful handiwork with her own inspiration and joy in the creative process. She only uses recovered gold in her collections and her engagement and wedding rings in order not to use too much of nature's resources. As with much else, there’s always extra thought behind what she does. "

GLASSTUDION BIG PINK In a limestone barn located on the east side of Gotland, you’ll find the Big Pink glass studio. After studying in Småland, the US and Denmark, Jennie Olofsson put into action her dream of having a shop, workshop and platform in Norrlanda, and has been at it for two years. Everyone is welcome to her glass works, a meeting place for creativity and the manufacturing of handmade glass. Here, Jennie demonstrates the contrast in her craft, from the living, hot material to the completed crystal-clear and fragile glass. Jennie gets her inspiration from Gotland’s special nature, things such as the dwarf pine of the Eksta coast, which has inspired one of her collections. Big Pink's glasses can be found in New York as well as in some of Stockholm’s best restaurants. +46 (0)70-914 35 45 | glasstudionbigpink.se

The sheep skins of Gotland are said to be the best in the world. At Ödins Garveri in Visby, they have been working with this fabulous material since the 1800s.

skin

With a passion for

When you walk into the post-and-plank house at Almedalen that Ödins Garveri is located in, it's like walking into a shop that breathes genuine craft. Between the mid 1800s and 1974, these premises were the local tannery. A couple hundred years of crafting here has resulted in the pleasant scent of leather permeating the walls. Today, Ödins Garveri is run by Eva Bjersander, who is particular about continuing the genuine crafting tradition associated with Ödins Garveri. With her colleagues Tina and Maria, she purchases raw skins from the local farmers, sews clothing and furnishings and manages the shop. On the shelves you will find home-made vests, hats, mittens and pil lows from lambskin. If you’re interested in lamb and sheepskins themselves, you will find them, carefully selected by Eva herself. – We buy skins directly from the farmers on the island. In addition to skins and products made from them, they sell other products that complement the skin products, such as the self-designed blankets made at Klippan yllefabrik, leather bags and wool slippers. What are we getting when we buy your products? – Small-scale production of high-quality prod ucts. We also provide face-to-face service: mostly, we sew, but we also stand behind the counter so our customers can meet the people who have made their products. Much of our goods are ready-made, but should you need to customize the size, or would pre fer to have a different colour, you can place an order. We sew and tailor to our customers’ needs. "

Genuine

Gotland design

Guteform values the future and sustainable consumption. Their products are high quality and made with great craftsmanship. Their choice of material and techniques is another important aspect for creating sustainable products with an exclusive feel. There is a unique culture and history embedded in wood and stone – which are the oldest and most workable materials for art and handicrafts. Guteform continues the tradition from 1980. With the same feel for shape and the same responsibility. Everything they make must originate in Gotland – robust and close to nature. – We make outdoor furniture for gardens and public spaces as well as special designs. Guteform represents Gotland design and origins. For the past 20 years, all our production was done on Gotland. Now parts of our assortment are made abroad, where we utilize our 20 years of knowledge and experience, says Jan Ahlby, owner of Guteform.

Jan wants to change how high-class products are viewed and points out the importance of the whole chain, from the person who makes the product to the person who uses it. – Both salaries and quality benefit from it. Re sponsibility and an old-fashioned spirit of a job well done are the pillars we stand on. It’s not uncommon that our customers still have their furniture after 20 years, he continues. And that garden furniture from Guteform lives on for so many years is beneficial for the environment. – We know nothing of the future, but we current ly see a great increase in the number of customers who appreciate our furniture, Jan concludes. Humility stops us from reviewing ourselves. So instead, we'd like to use the words of the White Guide’s last three reviews of us: White Guide 2015/2016 "... a perfectly relaxed hang out bar, outside and inside, and a thoroughly French menu that makes room for a surprising amount of love and quality. Indoors, the romantic turn-of-the-century dining hall and the wonderfully professional serving staff make what is possibly the best environment in Visby.”

Treat yourself with some gotlandic bread, fresh from our Visby bakery.

White Guide 2016/2017 “In this context, the expression “watering hole” is justified. Bolaget serves as Visby’s central spot for quenching your thirst and lightening your mood. Here, VIPs meet the gazelles of the city wall. Hunters, wild dogs and the occasional pig make a pilgrimage to the sun-drenched outdoor café. French cuisine is cherished and the eternally cheerful serving staff deliver just the right attitude for a place where everyone ends up sooner or later.

White Guide 2017/2018 “Life feels just a bit more fair after a dinner at Bolaget. You just have to love a restaurant that so whole-heartedly and lovingly embraces the French kitchen. Charming, and a bit blunt, just like one of the better countryside restaurants in France...”

It’s all fun and wisby strand games at WS! The year-round establishment Wisby Strand is centrally located by the harbour with a view of the Baltic Sea and is a stone's throw from the best beach club in Europe, Kallis. Here, you have unparalleled opportunities for meetings year round. The venue offers a large range of food and experiences for public events and meetings.

Through the years, Wisby Strand has developed into a hub for Gotland tourism, year round. The big glass windows face the constantly shifting Baltic Sea, only 50 metres away. Here, the water glimmers in orange hues as the sun sets and there is a unique tranquillity by the sea, near Almedalen and the alleyways that lead to the heart of Visby. The World Heritage city is filled with history, shopping and inspiring year-round restaurants. _ Our guests are enormously inspired by this environment, which I'm proud as a Gotlander to offer. Arranging meetings in Gotland is rather special, says Johan Lindvall, newly appointed CEO of Wisby Strand.

– I can’t see that any other conference centre in Sweden can offer what we offer our guests. Johan Lindvall is of the opinion that Gotland has a lot of potential but he would love to see the season for conferences made longer. – We have a magnificent product year round with an entirely different price range during the off-season than Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Many companies and organisations have found that participants are better unified here and that they can focus better on the task at hand than they can in the big cities where distances are greater and there are more distractions. In addition, the change of scenery and the continental feel of the island are appreciated,

and the island feels much further removed than a 35-minute flight or three-hour boat trip. – We want those who will be meeting here for a great experience to feel that our level of ambi tion is very high and that we allow ourselves to be influenced by the international scene when we set our standards for our customer experience, Johan emphasizes. He continues, – A key to our success is that we closely and pos itively cooperate with the increasingly professional actors on Gotland. Furthermore, Wisby Strand’s mentality is charac terised by vigour, ingenuity and dedication. There is a will to collaborate to create experiences on the

island, and therefore, Wisby Strand has helped develop a number of theme weeks – for example, Almedalen Week (first week in July), Wisby Strand festival (second week in July) and Stockholmsveckan (third week in July). Therefore, we recommend that you visit this place, which is full of possibilities, when you visit Gotland. You will encounter high-class environ ments, service and a number of experiences, year round. – We have niched ourselves at Wisby Strand by creating events and culinary and musical experiences. You are more than welcome to visit us any time of year, Johan Lindvall says with a smile. "

Cultural events take place in Gotland year round and you will find something for everyone. Welcome to the island that offers culture, history and fantastic scenery.

Culture – year round What does culture mean to you? For an entire year, there will be plenty of theme weeks on the island, from vernissages and music to theatre and dance. Here, you can experience a show in the lit up ruins on a summer night or a cosy gallery on a grey autumn day. Gotland is for visiting year round and through the centuries, its beautiful surround ings have inspired creators. Regardless of season, the special lighting and beautiful nature make Gotland's cultural scene even more grand. Here, we present a few great examples. For more events, visit: kulturenso.se "

The bright side of the Middle Ages

Medieval Week is the largest medieval festival in the Nordics, which welcomes time travellers from all over the globe. If you haven’t yet been, you’re in for a real adventure that you won't find anywhere else.

A FESTIVAL ATMOSPHERE

The program, with over 500 major and minor events, is created by hundreds of performers, lecturers, actors and craftsmen. Everything from a free fire show for several thousand people to a course in blacksmithing for just a few. There are so many things to see and do! Don’t miss the great concerts that gild the medieval church ruins.

One week in August, the World Heritage town's streets and squares are filled with 40,000 friends, knights, jesters, musicians, merchants and common summer tourists. It's easy to get caught up in the welcoming atmosphere. Come along to the bustling market area, watch a jousting tournament or choose from 500 cultural activities in and outside the town. Enjoy eight days full of fun, joy and solidarity.

JOUSTING TOURNAMENTS CAMPING The jousting tournaments are Medieval Week's most spectacular and popular events. Starting in the beginning of July, the contest between the country's best knights can be seen all summer, in Visby and in the Gotland countryside. Thrilling shows for the whole family that are guaranteed to make you want to come back for more and will give you memories for life.

When it comes to accommodations, the island stands at the ready with hotels, hostels, cabins and campsites, depending on your preferences and comfort level. Don’t wait to book a tent site at the Medieval Week's own camp-site a few minutes’ walk from the market area. You can choose between sites for modern tents or sites for authentic Medieval tents.

Gotska Sandรถn

Gotska Sandรถn is said to be the Baltic's most solitary place. Which could be why it's still unknown to many Swedes. But those who have found their way here tend to come back time and again, some, even to work without pay. Expansive sandy beaches that allure you to magical evening dips in the sunset are just one reason...

69

ABOUT GOTSKA SANDÖN

Gotska Sandön is a national park and was opened in 1909. The solitary little island is managed by the Gotland County Administrative Board, who have passed down the upkeep of the meadows to Gotska Sandön’s Local Heritage Society. They are aided by volunteer members who rake, make and haul hay and help build and renovate. The volunteers are not paid, but instead are given free travel, accommoda tions and meals during their visit. Kerstin Lundberg and her husband Johnny have made the hay hauling trip five years in a row. The team of workers on a trip like this consists of 8-10 people who are all responsible for getting the job done properly in a week. – Some years it's been really dry so it only took a couple of days, but other years it's meant very long and intense days to get it all done in time, Kerstin tells us. The reward for her is the experience in nature

Gotska Sandön is located in the Baltic Sea, 38 km north of Fårö. The island is a 3.5 hour boat ride from Nynäshamn and about 2.5 hours from Fårösund. The trip is trafficked by m/s Gotska Sandön, which is specially adapted for docking on the island with its several kilometre long beaches and lack of harbour. For more information about travel and accommodation: www.sandoresor.se A small part of the island was under national park protection from 1909, but in 1963, the national park was expanded to include the entire island minus the small churchyard in the south west. The highest point is 42 metres above sea level and is located on the Höga åsen sand dune. Most of the island is covered in forest, primarily pine trees. There are no shops or stores so visitors must bring their own food.

combined with the lovely togetherness of the group, and she tells us that some people become life-long friends. The hay hauling team in particular has some common traditions, such as a daily coffee break at 10 under the oak tree of the old farm, herring lunches, and not least, many swimming breaks. A morning dip before breakfast is considered a must, just as an evening dip after a hard day of work. – And at least one more dip during the day, she laughs. When you have long stretches of sandy beaches on every side, like Gotska Sandön, it's not hard to understand that you would want to swim. And often! Kerstin's favourite place is the beach that goes by the name Franska bukten. It’s a ways off from Fyrbyn and Lägerplatsen, but is well worth the walk. – And it makes your swim all that much better, Kerstin concludes. "

There are a lot of beautiful beaches, but this one is something special. Maybe because it’s further away than the others, making it a bit more desolate. But if you ask me, it's well worth the walk!

KAPELLET Each evening at 9, there are traditional evening prayers in the chapel, followed by a candle ceremony. Here, everyone brings a lit candle from their pew, gathers in a ring outside and sings together. It's very moving and is appreciated by young and old alike. There’s neither TV nor radio on the island, so attendance tends to be good!

Adventures in a unique environment

GOTLAND’S UNIQUE NATURE and special lighting are often a topic of discussion. For Morgan Sjöström, CEO of Gotland Active Store, they are exactly what make all activities on the island so fabulous. Morgan moved to Gotland in 2010 and has long been doing adrenaline-inducing sports such as mountain biking and climbing and he's tried most things. He knows what you should pack for a hike, what advantages water sports have on the island and where the best climbs and bike paths are. 75

SÖDRA HÄLLARNA offers dramatic coastal roads only 2 kilometers outside Visby city center.

Morgan Sjöström has always had a relationship to different kinds of sports and activities. After testing life in the great outdoors, it has become a major interest. For several years he's been hiking in the mountains, skied, ridden bicycles, and studied to be a mountain guide, only to wind up in Gotland. The primary allure of Gotland for the active person is the closeness to all kinds of nature and the possibility of year-round activity. – The things that people like to do during the summer can be done here all year. It’s just a matter of adapting your gear and in some cases, chang ing the length of your tours. I’ve taken groups of mountain bikers out in the beginning of December and climbed with a group of friends in November. Actually, it’s only really swimming that doesn’t tend to go over well, says Morgan. In Morgan’s opinion, the old saying that going to Gotland is like going abroad still applies. – The nature, with all the limestone, is so special, and there are so many nature reserves. Visby is what Visby is, and it's this combination that makes the island so unique. Though each season has its charm, autumn is Morgan’s favourite; when the hustle bustle of the island quiets down and the sun still warms you. For those who like water sports, there are great opportu nities during the colourful time of year because the winds pick up and the waves get larger; excitement paired with beauty.

morgan's Top three:

Wave surfing: Fårö lighthouse, Ekeviken, Gnisvärd Kite surfing: Kovik, Vivesholm, Gnisvärd Climbing: Klintklinten, Torsburgen, Högklint Biking: Hallshuk to Visby, 55km first-class trails. Asunden to Kyllaj, a perfect route for beginners, Katthammarsvvik to Sysne fishing village – Gotland’s most beautiful stretch of coast! Hiking: There aren’t many official hiking trails on the island. But a general tip is to follow the coast and the sea. And there are a lot of nature reserves to hike in.

Northern Gotland Barren and undisturbed nature Dramatic, rocky coasts Lamb farms and leather shops Stately rauks. Water-filled limestone quarries Southern Gotland Gentler nature with crop lands The fine Gotland ponies Lots of historical sites Leafy, lush nature An abundance of Gotland ceramics and other handicrafts

Morgan Sjöström, age 36, owns and runs Gotland Active Store. Has a partner and two children and lives in the outskirts of Visby.

– Regardless of the wind direction, you can always find good surfing on Gotland, and it’s not all that far to get to the other side of the island, Morgan explains. – Everyone who's been here finds it just as awe some as they'd heard it to be. Gotland is good at meeting visitor expectations. Morgan thinks that the nature is what really makes activities on the island so spectacular. The particular lighting and nature, which can shift dramatically in short distances, make it possible for everyone to find a favourite spot. Given the choice, he prefers to visit Asunden and Hideviken. – They are two of my favourite places, with good biking and hiking through exciting areas. A general tip is to take it easy and not try to do the whole island in one go. – Don’t strive to do everything. Instead, choose the type of nature or place you like best. Another tip is to stay along the coast. The small, winding, gravel roads along the sea really bring out the best of what Gotland has to offer. – Everything from those who drive their caravans on the small, lovely roads to those who bike, ride horses or hike. The coastal roads are a great resource, Morgan accentuates. For bike tours, it's best to choose the smallest roads in order to avoid the worst traffic. – For mountain biking, you have to have a bit of an explorer in you and a sense of direction so as not to get lost. It’s a good idea to follow the coastline. 77

For those who want to go out hiking, the advice changes with the season. – During the summer, it can get really hot when hiking, but then you need less packing. The risk of bad weather is not as great. On the other hand, spring and autumn are best for hiking. Find out what stores, restaurants and accommodations are open along your planned route – or pack enough food and gear to make it on your own, says Mor gan, and continues. – If you'd rather go on a guided hike, come for Gotland Hiking Week – a week of hiking that is organised every year. Lastly, Morgan emphasises the importance of being outdoors. – Hiking is an easy thing to try. Search for fossils or go to the Lummelundagrottan cave, have a swim in a limestone quarry or learn to surf. Bike along the coast in the sunset or stay out past dark and listen to the crickets. Make a fire and bake flat bread on a hot flagstone, or build a wind shelter from a tarp and stay overnight, says Morgan with a smile. There really is something special about Gotland. The barren nature in the north with rauks, waterfilled limestone quarries and exciting rocky terrain in contrast to the softer contours in the south with its fantastic history, fishing villages and glittering coastlines! A taste of Oskarshamn

Many think there is something magical about the sea, archipelago, genuine Småland nature and closeness to Blåkulla. But there’s more to experience in Oskarshamn – such as chocolate creams and pastries signed by the World Confectioner of the Year.

P

astry chef Anders Oskarsson’s run of competition successes has turned Nilssons Konditori into a tourist attraction: Sweden’s Bakery of the Year, Sweden’s Pastry Chef of the Year and, the most recent, Sweden’s Pastry Chefs’ Pastry Chef and the International Union of Bakers and Confectioners’ World Confectioner of the Year. So, those who want to try something out of the ordinary will of course head for Oskarshamn.

Another advantage is its strategic location by Småland’s coast. With Oskarshamn as a basis, experiences such as Astrid Lindgren’s World, the Kingdom of Crystal, Kalmar Castle and Öland’s beaches are just an hour away. And the ferry to Gotland departs a couple of stone throws from the centre. For those who like excitement, the legendary National Park Blå Jungfrun is clearly an enchanting destination.
