The Roots

The majority (34,2%) of the Italian CSOs in Kenya started operating in the country two decades ago. However, a few organisations were operating in the country since the early 60ies, and an increasing number of registrations took place in the 80ies and 90ies. 12 organisations (31,6% of the respondent) started their programmes in after 2010.

100% of the organisations participating in the multi-sectoral survey have strong roots in Italy since they are all registered with relevant authorities and registries regulating charities in Italy. 68,4% of them are further registered in Kenya and therefore allowed to directly implement programmes. 31,6% of the CSOs operate through bilateral cooperation channels.

DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION, HUMANITARIAN AID AND THE NEXUS

The majority (57,9%) of the Italian CSOs in Kenya have their programmatic focus on development initiatives. 5,3% have their exclusive focus on humanitarian aid and emergencies, while 36,8% either operate within the humanitarian development nexus, or have the capacity to scale-up humanitarian and emergency programming on needs basis.

Diversity In Expertise

In most of the cases, Italian CSOs in Kenya are implementing programmes in more than one sector. Overall, the available expertise from the Italian CSOs cover a broad range of sectors, with Health and Nutrition, Food Security, Livelihoods, Protection and Inclusion, Environment and Climate Change, Water Sanitation and Hygiene and Education being the prevalent ones.

Comprehensive Presence

The programmatic presence of the Italian CSOs in Kenya covers all the 47 counties of Kenya, thus suggesting a broad level of implementation of the commitment to development cooperation and humanitarian aid within Italian CSOs and the Kenyan population.

Funding Volumes

60,5% of the Italian CSOs in Kenya managed a funding volume up to 1.5 million Euro during the last 5 years. 39,5% of the Italian CSOs managed a funding volume ranging within 1.5 million Euro and above 5 million Euro. The infographic suggests the existence of both “small” and “big” organisations both addressing needs.

Source Of Funding

Private funds (donations) and funding from different channels set by the Italian government and the EU are the backbone of the funding stream for the majority of the Italian CSOs in Kenya. A minority of Italian CSOs is able to mobilise funding from faith based networks, UN agencies and other governments outside of the EU.

Participants To The Programmes

The diversity of the programmes within Italian CSOs in Kenya is further highlighted by the number of individuals engaged by each organisation for the past 5 years. 13,2% of the organisations were able to engage within 100 to 1000 participants; 34,2% were able to engage up to 10.000 individuals; 36,8% were able to engage within 10.000 to 250.000 individuals. 15,8% of the organisation were able target above 250.000 individuals.

Staff

18,4% of the Italian CSOs in Kenya are entirely staffed by national staff. 44,7% of the Italian CSOs are 90% staffed by national staff, confirming that the sector is increasingly investing in localisation of staff at all levels.

Coike Methodology For Data Collection

The contents of NIA MOJA 2.0 are informed by the members of COIKE through the answers they provided to the on-line multi-sectoral survey. The on-line multi-sectoral survey is a process for data collection promoted by COIKE on an annual basis. Since 2021, the survey looks at gathering and circulating a core set of information on the Italian CSOs in Kenya, with the overall aim of promoting coordination, partnerships, set of information includes the updated contact list and the “Who does What, Where? (3Ws), namely “which CSO is working in a given sector, and in which part of Kenya''. On a needs basis, the “Who does What, Where?” set of information is further completed by additional contents from the CSOs, such as information on their funding streams and their general feelings about the future of their programmes. All data is based on the past 5 years experience of the CSOs.
