I’m so excited about our 2013/14 Signature Series! This season, five amazing pianists join us: KWS favourites Jon Kimura Parker and Anton Kuerti return to play concertos by Brahms and Beethoven, and David Greilsammer, Haochen Zhang and Benjamin Grosvenor debut with us playing colourful works by Mozart, Rachmaninoff and Saint-Saëns. Our orchestra will play classics by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Debussy and Stravinsky, as well as the musical delights and surprises that you’ve come to expect from us. Legendary pianist Anton Kuerti returns to play Beethoven’s sparkling and elegant Piano Concerto No. 1 in this festive opening to the Signature Series. We round out the program with the lush strings of Vaughan Williams’ gorgeous Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, a brand new work by young Canadian composer Scott Good and Beethoven’s vivacious Symphony No. 4.

Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 contains some of his most famous melodies, and sets the standard for orchestral drama. On the first half of the program, we celebrate the 100th birthday of Benjamin Britten by inviting one of the world’s most exciting young tenors, Nicholas Phan, to perform Britten’s haunting Serenade with our own Principal Horn, Martin Limoges.

Paris Festival: The Salon

Some of the greatest Parisian art and ideas came to life in the intimate spaces of the Salon. For our second concert in the festival, we play two of the most elegant French orchestral works: Fauré’s enchanting Masques et bergamasques and Bizet’s charming Symphony in C. Young Canadian cellist Cameron Crozman takes a break from his studies at the Paris Conservatoire to join us for a performance of SaintSaëns’ Cello Concerto, and KWS harpist Lori Gemmel plays Debussy’s hypnotic Danses sacrée et profane. It’s our own special Salon Concert!

Join us for an unconventional evening of mindful movement, engaged listening and embodied enjoyment. This collaboration between mindfulness educator Meaghan Johnson, oboist Brian Seaton and the KWS will be meditative, powerful and profound.
